CRIMINAL MINDS: TIME OUT FOR SOME THOUGHTS.

Over the next few days I will be posting some wonderful pictures of the writers and cast of Criminal Minds. I wanted to stop for a moment to answer some of the questions many of you have been asking in the comments you have been leaving in previous posts. Yes, it was thrilling to meet the writers, hairdressers, producers and the rest of the production crew. One of my favorite memories of the trip will be a rather lenghty conversation I had with one of the brilliant writers. More about that later. You meet some very interesting people while you are in a studio. Kay Majerus takes care of the hair of three of our stars and she is one of the funniest people I met. I talked with her on and off my whole first day. She asked how we all liked this and that and was amazed at what details we all notice. I enjoyed talking with her so much I never got around to taking a picture of her but I am trying very hard to get one to post. Many of you asked about the plane. As stated in previous Criminal Minds articles the plane is of course a set. Sorry but I forgot to ask if they had changed the layout. I am pictured above sitting at the round table.

I also wanted to talk about something a bit more important. There are sites on the internet that post extensive spoilers and/or script pages. I am here to tell you from personal experience that a script changes almost moment to moment. Scenes are rewritten or reworked almost minute to minute. There is a long table outside of Craft Services that has nothing but shooting, script and scene changes on it. All day long the colors of some of the sheets change as they are updated and the scene changes happen minute by minute as they shoot. We all like a script tease now and again but please do not take them as gospel. Also, beware of ever buying a script on EBAY. You are probably not buying what you think you are. I asked for a script from my favorite episode "No Way Out" and was given a final copy. I was also given the first draft script of "Honor Among Thieves". It was fascinating reading and the writer, Aaron Zelman, did an outstanding job writing the script but it will change dozens of times before it makes it on the air. My point is as blunt as it can be...beware of what spoilers you read and don't buy a worthless script. Don't set yourself up to be disappointed. Now back to lunch with Matthew. :)

I remember how excited we all were when Garcia sat with the unit for the first time at the round table. I am equally as excited to see you sitting there. How wonderful!

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for your thoughts, Jill =)

Years ago I bought a script off of ebay and it turned out to be a copy and I was out big bucks. It was such a rip off.

The hairdresser sounds like a cool lady.

Yay! you sat at THE table. (was that Mandy's chair???)

c'mon and stop teasing us with the lunch already.

Sometimes letting our imaginations run a little wild with the "spoilers" is the best way to amuse ourselves while we wait impatiently for the next episode! (that's just my opinion) but I think it's fun to "profile" previews and spoilers.

What you're saying is very true. I looked at the script for JONES last night, while watching it and the two were wildly different. Some scenes I would have liked to have stayed in were cut, but it was still an amazing product. That said, the sides that are released on the net are very early- sometimes even writer's drafts. They're good for getting a general feel of the ep, but they're typically night and day from the end.

Hey, CriminalMindsFan here, I guess now you are officially one of the "Knights of the Round Table" as the Fisher King described them. And thanks for the advising about the scripts and spoilers. We sometimes take them and run with them.

Oh speaking of Spoilers, I agree with you Jill. I'm starting to learn not to believe in them a lot, because I'm such a spoiler junkie, when it comes to my favorite shows, that when the actual episode airs, it's completely different! AND I'm so disappointed. So, I'll try my best and avoid them. ;)

More goodies to look forward to! Are we getting near the'best is yet to come'?

Know what you mean about ebay, on another site, someone asked whether a script of an unaired episode (not CM) was genuine. Concensus was not to touch it. Definately a case of 'caveat emptor' (buyer beware)

I'm curious -- do they have an opinion of something like Script City, where you can get scripts of old shows and movies?

Good advice about the scripts, especially stuff on ebay.

Can't wait to read about your convo with the writer; that should be very interesting. I think it would be cool to get to talk to the writers; I'd have soooo many questions! *lol*

And how cool was it to sit at the round table???

Not Jill, but I can answer the question about Script City. I've bought a few scripts from them for educational reasons. They're quality for the most part, usually shooting draft teleplays. Sometimes if you get lucky, you'll get an earlier draft with notes in the margins.

The downside of Script City is that their selection for crime dramas is almost nonexistant. I can find every ep of BUFFY, but only two of CM.

They tend to have quite a few pilots.

My advice is seriously not to waste your money. The script changes are ongoing up until the very last shot is filmed and the Director says cut. I saw this first hand. In speaking with a few of the writers I learned that the original script is rewritten throughout the casting, rehearsals and the shooting. I would point out that from time to time on the internet their are legitimate final scripts donated for auction to various charities. I know that Mandy donated a signed script for a school to auction. In my opinion if you feel the need to own one then buying one this way makes the most sense. You know it is legitimate and you also help a cause one of the actor's feels strongly about. To me that is a win-win! :)

I want to sit at the round table! But no matter, Jill's awesome accounting for each day is just as good! Thanks for advising us too. I'm looking forward to more pictures and stories!!!!!

I don't really like spoilers anyways unless I've already seen the episode then you can compare the two. But I like going into the show and being surprised at what happens!

Thanks for the heads up and wow you sat at the table of honor. CM's round table!

slashgirl - i bet you do have some questions for the writers!

Seriously, it would be so fascinating to sit with them and chat about the scripts and how the series is developing. I'd like to know how long term they are thinking when they drop in little hints of character development and backstory - if there are future episodes that will hark back to earlier ones etc.

I also want to know if anybody has the special job of researching the Reid "factoids" or if everybody has a go (cos that sounds like a fascinating job).

Elizabeth

Oh yes, that's an interesting question. How on earth do they find information for Reid to say? I'm amazed, there must be some DEEP research involved.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the writers do such an amazing job, it would be so interesting to talk to them.

My question would be - do they have to read lots of gruesome information about previous crimes and do they ask the actual FBI to help them out with information?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the spoilers thing is so true. I mean, look at the "on the next episode" and teasers for Revelations that were on after The Big Game, we know at least two scenes were deleted between the airing of one episode and the next, Garcia and Morgan, and Reid being dragged. I'm hoping they'll put them in when they do the Season Two DVD.

Ben, on the DVD they have interviews with some of the FBI guys that help on the show, and yes, they do give the cast and crew real cases to study. In fact, in one interview Paget said she had nightmares and revamped the security for her home after reading the stuff they gave her. I'd point you to the interview if I coud remember where I read it.

Now, Jill, more about lunch, please? (See, I was good, I talked about something else for a minute.)

Everything sounds great so far jill. Eating lunch with Matt....how cool is that!!!

Shemar is my favorite though, so please, please, pleae, don't hold back with your encounter with him....and I'm waiting in patient agony for you to post those pics of him. =)

Yay! You got to sit at the round table!

You really are wonderful, Jill to share all of this with us.

Thank you.

Jill,
What a great pic of you at the Round Table! You look just like you belong there. Your next holiday card, per chance?

I've never even thought about buying a script. I guess I don't feel as much of a need for tangible thingies from a show. Now when my DVR went down and didn't record Revelations, I was ready to "let the dogs out...."

I'm also curious about researching Reid's factoids. Sounds like fun.

I'd like to see a quote come from Dr. Suess. Maybe read by Hotch, who's a father.

Jill, I can't believe you got a chance to sit at the round table, and the pic of Matthew is really cute. He sounds like a really nice guy.

However......the Shemar Moore fans at my "All About Shemar" Yahoo group are anxiously awaiting to hear about your encounter with Sir Fineness. :0) We can't wait to see the pictures too! We want Shemar! We want Shemar! LOL!

Love seeing you at the Round Table. I wonder whose seat you are sitting in if they even have assigned seats.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the heads up on bogus stuff offered on the net.

Anonymous said...

I really hear what you are saying because I bought a West Wing script a few years back and it was totally bogus and a waste of my money. Your blog is great. Glad that I found it. I love the show.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you had a good time. Wonderful.

Anonymous said...

Did they give you the special cell phone by which you can call Garcia and have fun conversations? And get dirt on all of us? lol

The script never survives contact with production!

Thanks for the 411 and cool seeing you sit at the round table.

I know you aren't going to tell us what the new scipt says but I so wish you would. :(

The famous Round Table! How honored you must have felt to sit there!

Funny, I've never bought or looked up scripts online either, it just never was something that interested me. But that's really interesting to find out, thanks for sharing!

Anonymous said...

Good advice for all of us and you at the round table is so great. How did it feel to sit there?

About the plane: I didn't know that it is a set! That's so cool! :)

Sounds like you had a great time meeting everyone.

It's neat to know about the scripts. You never know what you're gonna get and the end result is what matters most. It's great that they gave you a couple of scripts too. Such momentos!

good advice. I can't believe you got to sit at the infamous round table. so. lucky.
