CRIMINAL MINDS: "ASHES & DUST" ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

My teenage daughter finally got around to watching Criminal Minds "Ashes & Dust" last night and she loved it. It was funny though because she came into my den and started grilling me about why the scenes I had told her about were not in the episode. It did make me think. Our guest star Sean specifically came in that last night of shooting to shoot scenes that never even made it into the episode. Other scenes whose lines I now know by heart were edited to the point where I barely recognize them. Ashes turned out to be one the best episodes to date. Thinking about the finished product made me realize that the post production crew is genius. They take all that wonderful footage and make our finished product. So Bravo to all of them and if they should happen to be reading this and happen to have any of the cut footage just laying around I would love to have some of it for my blog! lol. :)

Could you consider sharing some of your favorite parts that were cut or changed to show us how it's done. ;-)

There was a scene in which Sean is on the phone in his room telling the caller that he understands and will be there. I am assuming that it was the setup to the meeting. There were alot of others. I will post more after work. :)

Thanks. :)

It is amazing to realize that even the actors likely have no idea what the final product is going to look like before it's made, because they shoot so many scenes that never make it to the show.

What they SHOULD do, is save MORE of those great scenes and put them in to the Second Season DVD set! There were only a few in the S. 1 DVD set, they could keep more and put them in for the Season 2 set.

I wonder how the actors feel if a scene they thought went really well and they felt showed their character and/or talents best ended up on the 'cutting room floor'? Thinking about it logically, they would understand it was best for the programme, but what about on emotional level?
There must be some really tough decisions to make to ensure timing is spot on and yet still have everything making sense.

I agree, Kim, that would be interesting.

It may show up on the future DVD's...I know some other shows do that, put the deleted parts on the dvd release. So a bit of bonus. *smile*

I am saving for the first season, so I can see all. I know there are those who hate 'repeats'...but it's giving me a chance to see the show. I am SO trying to keep my Wednesday nights free (giving up work for the team!)

Hope to get to join the chat too!

Whoops, I should read the comments before I make one, Kim and Jean said the same thing as I did about the second season DVD. Maybe the 'powers that be' will read it here and 'make it happen'.

Like Kim said, that's very true, sometimes the actors may have no clue as to what the finished episode is like. shows that there's even more hard work going on than just what we see on the screen! these actors are so talented and hardworking!

One would hope that some of the footage can be used for future episodes.

I guess you can compare it to creating a collage. You cut out a lot of pictures and some just fit better than others.

Thanks to the directors and editors!

I think one of the best parts of DVD's is the deleted scences. I love to watch scences that were cut out, and wonder why tjey did it, as they were great scences!

It's always very interesting to me to know that the finished product--a movie, a book, a TV show--has gone through so many revisions and changes.

It's got to be nearly impossible to keep things straight.

Great post, Jill! I agree that it was a WONDERFUL episode, and your enlightening comments about "post production". Thanks for sharing those good points with us.

I love your behind the scenes stuff. It is not censored like so much of the other is.

I bet everything they cut was also great. It must be a hard decision for them every week to make such hard decisions.

No surprise that they are good. Everyone associated with the show seems top quality. I am so looking forward to the next new episode.

It would be great if they would include a bunch of deleted scenes in the season two dvds.

I bet they cut more than they actually even show. How difficult in must be indeed to make these types of decisions. Lovely job.

We could have a great time with the extra footage. lol

I have watched it three times already. I really loved it.

So much hard work. I would kiss them all for doing it for us and two kisses for Shemar because he is the cutest.

I would love to know how they make the decision on what scenes to cut. I realize they film much more than they could possibly use but I would still like to know what does into making a decision like that.

I wonder how the actors feel when an entire scene they were in gets cut. I wonder if they even know about it.

Loved the episode and I have watched it over again several times.
