CRIMINAL MINDS: JOE MANTEGNA INTERVIEW

Criminal Minds: Joe Mantegna, David Rossi on Criminal Minds, has a wonderful interview in 'A.V. Club' this month. It is interesting to read why he decided to name his Criminal Minds character David Rossi. Here is a snippet and the link:

Criminal Minds (2007-present)—“David Rossi”
JM: It’s my third series, and I finally got one that seems to be successful, with some longevity to it. It’s a great group of people, great group of writers. Again, it’s based on real people. I spent some time at Quantico, went down to FBI headquarters in Washington, and met some of the real people and some of the guys who work with us as technical advisers. I have tremendous respect for what these people do. I think of being an actor as a blue-collar profession. In other words, you just get out there and do it. And very often, even in movies, you can spend a lot of time sitting in a trailer waiting for them to set up, you know, a special-effects shot. When I did Baby’s Day Out, it was a lot of fun, but with those kind of pictures, it’s almost the more money they spend on them, the more time you wait to do the work. It’s just the nature of the business. So the actual time you’re acting is miniscule compared to the time you’re getting ready to do the work. The big difference on series television is, there’s not a lot of hanging-out time. You’re pumping those pages out, you’re doing six, seven, eight pages a day. And I like that pace. It’s a little more what I’m used to, it’s a little more like the theater. I feel like “This is what I’m being paid to do, let’s do it.” I’m not being paid to sit around and chat, you know, have coffee, and then just say four words and come back tomorrow and do take two. So I kind of like that.
I look at Amber Tamblyn, who was so brilliant on Joan Of Arcadia, and I figure where she probably got her chops was working eight years on a soap opera, where she had to learn reams of dialogue every day and run through every kind of emotion at the drop of a hat. And it gave this girl such depth as an actress, you know, so that’s an example of that. If you can do series television well, and not walk your way through it, do it as high a level as you can, and if the writing is good, if the people running it know their shit—which in this case we do, Ed Bernero who runs the show, and everybody involved—it’s very rewarding. And I like it. I got a chance to name this character after a real person, a policeman named David Rossi who was the first guy to testify in the O.J. Simpson trial. I thought he got piled on by O.J. Simpson’s lawyers at the time. So I thought “Someday I’m gonna name a character after this guy.” He went up in his dress blue uniforms and testified for two days. And I thought “What integrity.” For two days, this guy just got beat up—and all he did was answer the phones—and it’s obvious the defense is just gonna beat this guy up and try to hang the LAPD over the fact that this fuckin’ idiot murdered his wife. To me it was a joke. And so because of it, I named him after this guy, and he found out through surreptitious methods, and we became great friends. ’Cause he was so flattered that I had done that.

CRIMINAL MINDS: BLOG POST BY KIRSTEN

Criminal Minds: Kirsten Vangsness has sent us her newest blog post. Criminal Minds goes on hiatus in a few days. I hope Kirsten and all her co-workers have a terrific hiatus. From Kirsten.........

March 5, 2009 I'm sitting at a desk in a police department in Buffalo. In Los Angeles. Really but it’s supposed to be Buffalo and I’ve never been there but it totally looks like it. I've been here since 4:30 in the morning. I am currently bleary eyed at best and have been fighting the urge to combat it with sugar. Sugar is my pal in small amounts and anything larger it's just mean.

Matthew is all about armpits today. I don't know why.

April 3, 2009 It’s a version of soon. I am a moody and fickle bird, I forget that about myself until I am. And I have been moody and fickle and hermit-y and when I’m like that it’s super hard to get me to share. And I like being moody and fickle and hermit-y there’s a special kind of power in it. To just be like- back off--I’m playing in this sandbox ALONE. I enjoy a good cave. I’m denning.

April 9, 2009 I am having a brief window of social-ness and I thought you’d want me to take advantage of it before the season end. We have only one more episode left. This year has flown by FAST. I have a whole SLEW of shiny, gorgeous, ridiculous pens!!!!! I love them each separately and uniquely and well. I try and find the right pen for every scene, usually I use the same one for the whole episode, I think Garcia uses a pen a day and circulates through them depending upon her mood, her outfit and the task at hand. The new ones that are in heavy rotation are the purple stegosaurus, the grey crazy face one with the beads and the puff of hair, the tiger with the moving appendages, the dolphin, the grey and pink with the skull on the top and the purple glittery heart. There might be more I have used and I certainly will use each one. I love them. Thank you. And it was a total pleasure to see Jill and meet the troops and chat everyone up, I remember I was sleepy and super caffeinated and was kind of a spaz and you all were fresh faced and sweet and gave me a bag of loot.

We are filming all this week at the Disney Ranch. That means me too! I’m out of the office! Ed Bernero wrote AND is directing this one and he always has Garcia doing and saying and being uber-rad. And Ed can direct and do all the smart guy stuff and still be all joke-y and fun. Today all seven of us were out there acting it up together, end of season four and we merry seven are still are in the adoration phase. I got Shemar colored make-up all over my cheeks because he couldn’t stop kissing on me. My job is fun. And I’m not in heels! I love heels but I was doing a lot of trudging through dirt today, in the rain SO for this I’m in these crazy comfortable super awesome looking biker boots. And a cape. Really. It’s a short cape. But still, a cape. It’s red. I think I’m the only girl on TV right now who gets to wear a cape.

Joe and I both went to the Genesis Awards and he did a Fat Tony impersonation for me there and the whole dinner was vegan and they fed us chocolate mousse with raspberries for dessert and the wine was all organic so it’s impossible to get a hangover from it. Amazing. Oh! Did you know I did a Fat Tony/Simpson’s reference on our show? A few weeks ago- I said somebody was “too stabby” which is a call back to a thing Fat Tony (played by Joe) on the Simpson’s said. It’s a little thing but I found it to be thrilling and so did Joe.

Oh friends, it’s late and I have a drive back up to the mountains in the morning. I wish you all happy adventures and wishes granted. When inspiration strikes I will write you again, who knows what version of soon, but I will.

Love,

Kirsten

p.s. I almost forgot...for your viewing pleasure...the second one I took myself:=

CRIMINAL MINDS CHAT WITH MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER & RICK DUNKLE

Criminal Minds: The moderators of the Criminal Minds Fanatic blog and website are honored to announce that Matthew Gray Gubler and Rick Dunkle, pictured on the set of "Conflicted" with Andrew Wilder will be joining us in the Criminal Minds chat room on Friday, April 10th at 3 pm est to discuss "Conflicted". The password for the chat room will be changed prior to this chat so please email Laura or Debbie at cmfchat@gmail.com for the password.

CRIMINAL MINDS: WHO IS RICK DUNKLE?

Criminal Minds: Many Criminal Minds Fanatics had the pleasure of meeting Rick Dunkle, pictured on the set with Stacey Beneville the First AD on Conflicted and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight), last month in LA. Rick's first episode, "Conflicted," airs tomorrow! Rick will be a Staff Writer for Criminal Minds in season five and is also the script coordinator for Ed Bernero's "Washington Field" pilot. :)

Rick Dunkle studied broadcast journalism and theatre at the local school – Franklin College of Indiana – for three years before leaving his hometown of Franklin, Indiana, for Los Angeles where he earned his B.A. in Cinema & Television Production from Columbia College Hollywood in 2002. While studying at CCH, Rick studied television drama writing under then Third Watch executive producer Ed Bernero. After finishing his first degree, Rick started work on his MFA in Screenwriting at Loyola Marymount University and began interning at Paramount Pictures in the Domestic Television Research department. Rick’s internship led directly to a fulltime job as research analyst at Sony Pictures Television International where he studied viewing trends of audiences worldwide. Rick was promoted to lead ad/marketing copywriter for SPTI in January of 2005 and transitioned to working off-site when he accepted the position of Script Coordinator on Criminal Minds from former teacher now new boss Ed Bernero. Rick finished his MFA in 2007 and began work that Fall on a PhD in Media Psychology from Fielding Graduate University. Rick soon began teaching, returning to his alma mater to offer a course in Psychology as it relates to film at Columbia College Hollywood. Rick began teaching Entertainment & Cross Promotions at Emerson College’s Los Angeles Center in Fall 2008 and sold his first pitch to Criminal Minds in October. Rick has been the script coordinator on Criminal Minds for all four seasons and wrote episode 420 “Conflicted”, directed by Jason Alexander and starring Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone, Shallow Hal’s Susan Ward, and Nip/Tuck’s Roma Maffia.

From Rick: Personal Information for the Fanatics:

Though I’ve lived in LA for nearly 9 years now, I still (and always will) consider myself a Hoosier. I’ve lived in Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin and now, California.

I am a sci-fi/fantasy geek, favorite shows being Doctor Who (ever since the original series), Star Trek: TNG (When Wil Wheaton guest starred in “Paradise” I told Deb & Erica how much of a fan I was and they actually cast me as the dead guy in the teaser who gets killed by Wil and then hit by the semi, so now I can say Wesley Crusher killed me!), Farscape, Battlestar Galactica (Ron Moore’s version), and everything Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog)… I still get all fan boy when Nick Brendan is on set. It was actually a Buffy spec I wrote in Ed’s TV drama writing class that put me on his radar.

In high school and college I spent my time either writing (yearbooks, newspapers, magazines, student tv news channel, radio station), acting (plays and student films), directing (one-acts, student films), or flunking physics (because I was always writing, acting or directing!). I was that guy who was involved in everything and wanted my senior bio to be the longest… and it was, lol.

I worked all through high school and college, and have worked a variety of jobs from newspaper reporter at the local county paper to Dairy Queen drive-thru guy to graveyard shift at a 24-hour telephone banking call-in center. (My first job was as a paper boy!) At last tally, I’ve worked nearly 50 jobs!

I love to travel. I’ve been to 47 states and three continents… I want to hit every continent (including Antarctica) by the time I’m 40.

I always knew I wanted to be a writer. My parents knew it pretty early, too. I would write “films” for them and have my stuffed animals be the actors and recorded it on our old VHS video camera.

I’m a Scorpio.

CRIMINAL MINDS: TELL NINA TASSLER WHAT YOU THINK!

Criminal Minds: Please use this thread to post a message to CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler about the firing of the Criminal Minds writers and the recent media reports that CBS is cutting actors from popular television shows.

Let her know that we object to their "changing the winning formula" of Criminal Minds. "Why change a show that works?" "Why lay off writers and actors that make the show great?" "Don't change a winning formula." We won't tolerate any more changes with this show. We will stop watching. Period.

Here's your chance to speak your "Minds"............

I will print off and fax her office daily all the comments left.
