How can they even consider cutting AJ and reducing Paget’s appearances in episode! This is outrageous and Criminal Minds fans will NOT take it. We want AJ and Paget back. The show will NEVER EVER be the same without them and NO ONE can replace these lovely and talented actresses. By cutting these characters they are killing one of your their OWN top rated shows. We will not sit back and let you hurt out favourite actresses and ruin our favourite tv show. We WANT AJ AND PAGET BACK. Over 18000 people have already shown their support and most of them including me will NOT be watching the spinoff WE DONT WANT IT! So why dosntt CBS do something smart for a once and LISTEN to their FANS. Our love of the show MADE it a HIT tv show so listen to what we are saying we are all serious!!! WE WANT AJ AND PAGET BACK.

I can not find words to describe such sadness and injustice. We want our show complete, Paget and AJ`s characters are special to Criminal Minds as much as the talent of both, their charisma and the importance of each character. we Learned to love and admire each actor and character and they are doing this show to be the success that it is. Criminal Minds only exists today because of this wonderful group that must be maintained. Paget and AJ, we love you.

To the Crimanal`s mind family A.J. Cook, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Matthew Gray Gubler, Paget Brewster, Shemar Moore and Thomas Gibson

This is a horrible decision. Making CM an (almost) "all boys-club" will make it lose much of its appeal. I imploringly hope that you, CBS, will reconsider this cast change.

Mel said...

This is just plain wrong. They say it's budget cuts that have caused this, yet, there's a spin off, which costs lots of money. Also, if they didn't waste the money that they do on Charlie Sheen (who may not even be able to film the start of the next series of two and a half men because of his court dramas) then there'd be no problems.
Seems pretty sexist that it's targeting 2 FEMALE members of teh cast aswell. Why are they more expendable than their male counterparts?
CBS is messing with a good thing, and us fans wont stand for it AT ALL.
They seemingly like to cancel and mess with POPULAR WELL RATING SHOWS.

CBS, you fail at life. Epically fail that is.

Unknown said...

I realise different shows have different budgets but surely CBS is the one to allocate which show gets what budget. If they can afford to give Charlie Sheen millions & spend a lot of money on a spin-off with a star I assume is also extremely expensive in these difficult financial times, why hasn't CBS been able to allocate sufficient funds to maintain a stellar cast integral to the success of a consistently top show?

It seems to me this decision speaks volumes of the beliefs and attitudes of CBS rather than being an understandable business decision based on the current financial climate.
CBS seems to believe that they can save money by firing AJ Cook and reducing the number of episodes Paget Brewster appears in and still have a top show. They believe established strong female characters played by talented actresses are expendable. After all there are four male characters on the show that have not been fired or offered only part time employment.

When faced with the initial backlash from viewers/fans of Criminal Minds they rushed out a correction that this decision was not financial but was for “creative reasons” in order to “refresh a veteran drama”. I believe CBS were also trying to refute the other bone of contention that their decision was sexist by announcing they would be adding a new regular female cast member to Criminal Minds.
I do not believe CBS has successfully refuted either claim.

Replacing AJ Cook with another regular female cast member for “creative reasons”could be seen as reasonable in terms of CBS’ statement, regardless of whether you personally agree with the decision. However not when you also take into account what basically amounts to the demotion of Paget Brewster. How does having Paget Brewster in only some of the episodes “refresh” the show? How is that not a financial decision considering the only benefit (that I can see) is it would save them money? A new regular and a part time Paget Brewster still amounts to less money being spent and the impression that CBS believes female characters are less important than their male counter parts. That CBS sees the female characters are either expendable, interchangeable or only required some of the time. At least that is the impression I get.

I would also like to say what are the odds that this new regular female cast member will be younger and cheaper than AJ Cook? I hope I am wrong but if I’m not how exactly does CBS believe this statement refutes the claims that this decision is not financial and sexist?

Assuming Criminal Minds is profitable given the ratings success & DVD sales why should the cast and crew have to take pay cuts for their successful hard work if the execs haven't? Why should the cast of a successful show have to work for less when millions is being thrown at Charlie Sheen? Why isn't working hard & being successful not enough to justify their salaries and continued employment? Is it really necessary to make cuts on a show as successful as Criminal Minds? Or is it as simple as CBS believing they can make these cuts and the only consequence will be bigger profits for them on an already successful show

There are a few things I would love to know the facts and figures of. How does Criminal Minds compare to other CBS shows for ratings and revenue? Is Criminal Minds currently profitable? Is any of this affected by the amount of ad revenue each show can generate? Have the CBS execs taken a pay cut during these difficult financial times?

No AJ and less Paget? That sounds awful. I loves seeing strong, intelligent, professional women represented on TV. Cutting these talented actresses and amazing character is doing a great disservice to the audience. This is butchering the great balance and cast dynamic that is on CM. It's what keeps me watching. I can't say I'll have the same enthusiasm and respect for this show and CBS if this goes through.

I simply cannot imagine that the show is able to function without the female field agents. Specifically this show, which has established the importance of having women in the field, which has stressed time and again that there are things that male agents are unsuitable for.

Not that we should have to prove why women should be represented on TV. Why women should be allowed to have jobs. Why women should have equal rights. I thought we went through that 100 years ago or so. But the sad reality is that our half of humanity is still considered worth less than the other, and moments like this are painful reminders.

I loved Criminal Minds for being one show that looked like it had embraced gender equality, maybe not perfectly, but better than many other crime shows where women are love interests or victims, and as victims possess no agency or subject status. CM is so much better than this.

This is the show's unique appeal, and CBS is about to toss it out in a misguided attempt to save money? I don't want this show to die, be it through cancelation or through loss of identity brought on by executive meddling.

Figure out a way to save costs without ruining the show's premise.

It makes no sense to get rid of AJ and reduce Paget. This will truely ruin the show for me and I won't continue to watch it. Nor will I watch the spin off, not that I planned to anyway. CBS=See BS.

When I read about this issue I thought it was a hoax. But soon, with the petitions and the reactions from the remaining cast members, I realized that in fact this is true. I find this completely shocking, and frankly, stupid. I mean, both AJ and Paget are wonderful actresses and the characters they portray are essential in the show. Both JJ and Emily have something that makes them relatable. Also, with JJ you can see that cases involving children affect her in a way that brings out her maternal instincts, making the show much more personal, and the character much more life-like. Furthermore, Paget's character Emily is also very likable by bringing a certain sense of humor to the team. Moreover, her character Emily is surely remember for the episode where she was being held hostage and was then beaten because she confessed that she is the FBI agent, thus protecting Reid. These characters are vital to the show. Without them Criminal Minds would not be the same. So I ask, why ruin such a good show? Why can't the cast stay the same? People have grown accustomed to it, and what's important - they like it this way! Getting rid of two 'main' characters will kill the show.

I think this is one of the stupidest things CBS has decided to do. It's bad enough that they have messed up just about every other good show won this station, but they have to add this one to the list? This is probable one of the worst decisions this station is ever going to make. Getting rid of two women on the show because it seems like it is mostly male dominated? If that isn't totally stereotypical and completely degrading to us women I don't know what is. CBS, did you even stop to think that us women would like to be represented as more than just the victims on this show? Are you trying to say that a woman would incapable of a career such as an FBI agent? Well, I think you're wrong. Maybe you should get your heads out of your asses and realize that. If his show lacks female characters, do you think it's going to appeal to anyone? I certainly don't. This is an epic fail on your part, way to screw up one of the last decent shows on your station.

Unknown said...

I have been reading about your decisions to not renew AJ Cook's contract and to cut Paget Brewster's screen time and I am very, very displeased with this decision (to say the least). I hope that you will reconsider your decision and not change the line up of this show. I have been a fan of Criminal Minds from the very beginning and the current cast is the BEST! I love all of the chemistry that they have on and off screen (I follow them all on twitter). The characters of JJ and Prentiss are awesome roll models for women. JJ proves that women can be mothers and wives while still be successful in the work place, especially one dominated by men. Prentiss is a very intelligent woman who proves that women don't have to fit into a certain mold and can join the boys out in the field to kick butt! Please do not break up the current cast. If your actions are due to financial reasons, I would rather you keep the current cast then try to create a spin off with Forrest Whitaker (who I'm sure will cost CBS a pretty penny & let's not get started on how much money you pay other CBS "stars" who run around in real life trying to kill their own wife). I was not impressed with the episode featuring the spin off team this past season and would much rather watch AJ and Brewster as they are much easier on the eyes than Mr. Whitaker. I hope that you will listen to the fans of this show, as we know what we want to see on the best crime show on tv! You can't just rip cast members from scripts because we are very attached to all of the cast members. Remember the tried and true saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Kezza said...

WTF is wrong with you?!?!?!? You are getting rid of one of the best characters on the show AND of course that's not enough for you. You have to reduce the screen time of another as well!!!! Are you SERIOUSLY cutting these amazing actresses and characters in order to pay for your precious little spin off?!?!?! I mean come ON!!!! Spin offs are almost always bad, especially those of great original shows. What makes you think that your new spin off is so good that it is worth taking away A.J and Paget?

I love this show and had done from the get go, but this puts my loyalties on the line. I'm not saying the guys aren't good on CM, they are, but why cut two women? While Joe mantegna is great, he was not really warmed too as much when he took over from Mandy so why not cut him? By cutting JJ and minimizing Emilys screen time, you're leaving the show with only ONE full time female cast member who already has limited screen time to begin with.
You are risking loosing a huge portion of your fan base based on a stupid decision that you WILL (not may) regret!!!

I sent in my thoughts via the comment/complaint form on CBS's website. Here is what I shared:

I am writing in support of Ms. AJ Cook and Ms. Paget Brewster. I am
under the impression that CBS and its staff have received numerous
complaints and comments in regards to CBS's recent decision to drop AJ
Cook from future episodes of Criminal Minds and CBS's negotiations
with Paget Brewster to reduce the number of episodes she will
participate in for the coming season. I would like to join the
rapidly growing legion of fans that is questioning CBS's
decision-making process concerning the senseless dismissal of key
female roles in a internationally respected procedual crime drama.
Criminal Minds has been able to collect and retain its viewership in
large part due to the chemistry and camaraderie among its cast
members. AJ and Paget are an intergral, essential part of the fabric
of the series. Through their portrayal of strong, assertive,
intelligent female professionals in a male-dominated profession, they
provide a bold female perspective that is all too lacking in
contemporary, male-centric television that tends to portray women as
passive objects of sexual attention. I hope CBS will take into
consideration the feedback they have received and seriously reconsider
the merit of their decisions.

My sincere thank you for your time in reading this. It seems all the voices combining will create a sound that cannot be ignored. Take care everyone.

Well, what can I say?...This decision is an absolute disgrace! As a huge fan of the show and ALL of the characters I think it's the most stupid thing CBS could have done! As many people have said, why try to fix something that isn't broken!

One of the main strengths of the show is the interactions between the characters. If AJ were to leave and Paget to be in a limited number of episodes the dynamics would totally change, and in my opinion would impact negitively on the show as a whole. The remaining actors would also be under more pressure and would understandibly feel a lack of security in their own roles and this would have a huge effect. It is also evident that the other cast members are protective of AJ and Paget and so although I'm sure being the professional's that they are, their performances would still be as good, they would surely feel some resentment at losing two members of their team.....
As I said, this decision is a disgrace but it's not too late for it to be overturned...CBS has some groveling to do but surely that accompanied with some very red faces would be worth it to get the cast, crew and HUGE number of fans back onside...If they don't then they should get ready for the backlash because the petition and comments made to date will just be the tip of the iceberg!

I'm so sad!

The reason I don't watch the shows I don't watch is that they don't have ensembles as good as CM's. The women aren't there, or are eye-candy, or spend all their team-time shooting down the inexplicably central baby-man (NCIS, I'm looking at you). I've even bought things after seeing their commercials during CM. (This is seriously the only time my fandom of a show has made me more attentive to the commercials during breaks. I think it's that the stories make me sit still and process during the breaks instead of running out for a soda or picking up my book.)

JJ and Emily both fill important roles, both have their distinct strengths they bring the stories, and missing JJ will be bad enough--surely somebody will have to come in to choose the cases and liase with the locals? But having less Emily as well? NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Oh, CBS, please. AGH, there's so little I really like on TV, and nothing else any more that I actually try hard to be home to watch.

I really do hope these two wonderful ladies get to stay on the show. If they were to be cut, the whole energy of the team would inevitably change... and not in a good way.

CM would not be the same with out A.J. and Paget. They bring a lot of the funny to the show and a lot of the seriousness parts to it. The show might just FAIL without them in it.

Kara C said...

First, the reason for losing AJ Cook was said to be financial, but then I read another actress would replace her. Replace her? I don't think so. Clearly, one of the primary reasons this show works as well as it does is because of the TEAM. Sure, most people have their favorite member, although many of us would be hard pressed to pick just one. Messing with the make up of this team is absolutely messing with the show itself as well as its future success. CBS, PLEASE reconsider your decision to get rid of one vital character and reduce airtime of another. It can only hurt the show.

Shawn said...

One of the many beauties of this show has always been that its beauties are more than just pretty faces - they are smart competent and professional women - true role models. They rarely need saving, are compassionate and still manage to be definitively female while suiting up in kevlar.

This asinine decision by CBS to fire AJ and severely cut back Paget is a slap in the face to the fanbase. We want all 7- no one is less important, all are needed.

Please CBS, reconsider and keep this wonderful group - and your fanbase - together.

i don't see any reason as to why CBS would consider taking JJ (AJ Cook) off Criminal Minds and lessen Emily's (Paget Brewster) appearances to a few episodes?! Cost cutting?! Please. I have given this situation alot of thought. As a business woman I certainly understand profitability & keeping your shareholders happy. We desire to keep our product fresh & appealing to the customer, utilizing different ideas for a successful sale. That being said; we ARE buying your product! We love Criminal Minds. The hundreds of thousands who watch your show faithfully are just as invested in CM as the actors, writers, & crew. We have viewing parties, chat, blog, join FB groups,& even name our children after characters. The actors are meshed together both on & off screen, they are cohesive. This parlays beautifully on the screen. We see it. We get it.Getting rid of JJ will eliminate the strong admin who brings the team together, while struggling to keep role of mother & agent separate.Emily, who was suspect at the beginning has beautifully taken over the role of the caregiver, vacated when Mandy Patinkin left. Adding layers to Emily only makes you want to know her more. Do not dilute her strength. A new female lead is a waste of someone's talent. Use what you have, expand on storylines and probe characters. We've been thru alot w/the boys, how about the girls? AJ & Paget are central to the show. Unless this whole debacle can be stopped you are ruining a great product.I don't want to hear BS about numbers, last week CM lead their time slot & with a rerun. They are currently 12 in the top 20. Season to date CBS leads all networks in viewership. Do you think these numbers will stand if you eliminate key players? I don't.

When I found out that criminal minds was replacing AJ Cook and cutting down Paget's air time, I didn't believe it. In fact, I didn't believe it, as much as I couldn't believe it. And the reason I couldn't believe it was because I could not believe that Criminal Minds, my absolute favourite show -for 3 years now- would do something like this to its actors. What do you think will happen if JJ is actually gotten rid of, and Emily's airtime is cut down? No, really. I can tell you. People will stop watching the show, and Criminal Minds will lose its fans. We all love Hotch, Rossi, Garcia, Reid and Morgan, but JJ and Emily are just as much important cast members as the rest of them!!! Can you imagine what it would be like if Criminal Minds were to suddenly replace, say, Derek or Hotch, and cut down on Garcia's airtime?!?! It would not be a Criminal Minds. And that is what I think about this utterly stupid, retarded, useless idea. Because you know where this is getting you CBS/Criminal Minds

Nowhere.

No one wants a spin-off show. We want the real thing. The REAL Criminal Minds.
And that's the way it always will be.

This is a disgrace on so many levels. A shocking, shaming disgrace. CBS, if karma does indeed exist, you can probably expect this to come back on you a thousand-fold. What you are attempting to do is nothing short of despicable, ill-informed, and short-sighted. Do you really think that fans will accept this? If you decide to forge ahead, expect viewer numbers to decline dramatically. Is this your masterplan? Actually, maybe it is! Do you expect fans to grow tired after a few weeks and just accept what you're doing? No way. It's not in our nature. AJ and Paget are fine, worthy actresses, who can easily match any of the male cast in terms of ability and popularity. We will fight for them!

It is so incredibly important to this show to keep all it's characters in tact. These two females are the only two who are portrayed in "the field" and without them it will be as if the writers and producers feel that females will have no contribution there. We all love you A.J. and Paget!

I enjoyed watching Criminal Minds in part for their strong, competent, capable female characters. Even though the show often focused on the male characters’ stories and development, at least the female characters were there, kicking ass. By eliminating or cutting two of three female characters, but leaving the four male characters, CBS is sending a pretty clear message that women’s stories are less valuable and that female characters are more disposable.

Seriously, is there any reason other than sexism that can explain why aren’t they cutting one of the guys as well? The show has three men who are experienced profilers, leaders, alpha-males, &c. J.J.’s role is unique on the show.

I think if CBS needs to cut costs they should cut their famous guest unsubs.

If you break up the team/cast, you lose your viewers. Seriously, CBS. You think that's a good idea? Maybe if you can't find the money they people who sit behind a desk all day should be the ones who lose out!

Mary said...

wow talk about a kick in the gut. This makes no sense. CBS sucks. I wont be watching the spin off. And CM is now in question.

Calie said...

This is not okay; the fact that you are only considering cutting the women is downright misogynistic. If you go through with the decision to cut AJ and Paget, I will no longer be watching. The team as a whole is what makes this show worthwhile, but the women, Paget especially, are the reason I watch. They send a positive message to women and they are a wonderful asset to this show. There are so few positive female role models on television these days and it seems like there are fewer everyday, especially on CBS. If you do not wish to lose a large portion of your viewers, I strongly suggest rethinking this decision.

Michelle said...

Removing AJ & limiting Paget's screen time will severly damage the show. I will NOT be watching if AJ Cook is not a series regular. Why are CBS always cutting back on the females on TV shows? The males can also be fired or let go. Changing the CM cast at all will be disastrous.

Louise said...

I cannot believe they'll do that, I just cannot! HEY, we're here! Don't they think that our opinion matter? Hey, guys, fired JJ and Prentiss, and I won't watch CM anymore! Are the so sure the can afford the loss of hundreds, not to say thousands of fans? Think about it, CBS, just think about it.....

Amanda said...

I love CM just the way it is. I can not imagine what it would be like with out A.J. and Paget. If CBS continues with it's plan to illuminate one character and cut down the role of the other my loyalty to this show will sadly end. This will ruin a perfectly good show, and lose a lot of loyal fans.

What are you gonna do when there is a press conference? or a rape vicitim who needs to talk to a woman? they are the heart of the show!

LeahAnne said...

They cant take the CM girls out of this show. They make an impact on the show as much as the rest of the cast. Love this show and would have to see it fail because of a stupid decision.. CM rocks but without the ladies it will fail!!
KEEP THE LADIES of CM!!!

Kerri said...

I'm disgusted with this news about the characters of JJ and Prentiss. There are so few well-written female characters on TV these days. I only got into CM this season, after seeing reruns on ION TV, but I really fell in love with all of the characters. It's an insult to our intelligence to claim these moves are for "creative reasons." If CBS needs to save money, ditch the spinoff.

Sarah D said...

This is about visibility of strong, successful women working alongside their male peers without distinction. Not only is the reason offensive -given women are still paid less in the workforce- it smacks of sexism. Where any of the male characters viewed as expendable as AJ and Paget’s characters? It seems not. I am truly shocked that men are still seeking passivity and invisibility instead of rejoicing in the vitality and importance of women. You have not only insulted the thousands of women working in police enforcement roles, but the female viewers who tune into your show. I am ropable at this planned situation, and as a result, will channel my enjoyment in other shows that still have the courage and strength to celebrate their female characters and actresses. You should be ashamed, though given you have presented this to two of your female actresses, I sincerely doubt that you are, and that makes me all the more saddened. Shame on you, this really is reprehensible

REALLY CBS REALLY you are going to ruin a great show there is nothing wrong with this show you guys reamember the old saying "IF IT AIN'T BROKEN DON'T FIX IT" well this show is not broken it is far from it i think the show is lacking girl power and you want to take 2 of them off and bring 1 girl on do the math it don't equal up and really throwing the new girl into the mix will just screw everything up look how long it took for people to start liking aj's stand in with she was having her baby huh and these people are the show i dont see you working 12-16 hours a day to give us a great show we fans love the show as it is don't change it cause of a little thing called budget cuts if you liked the show as much as us you would find a way to keep everyone in tack and still keep the show running on a few less dollars

I really don't think I'll be able to watch the show with JJ and Prentiss gone. I love the entire cast on this show, and more than that, I love the way they all work together and interact with each other. I'm really disappointed in CBS for forcing Criminal Minds to follow in the footsteps of CSI: LV and House and Scrubs-- once great shows that took a serious nosedive in quality when the original lineup became scattered to the winds.

I'm not naive enough to think that casts never change, but doing it as fast as 1 a season can make it very awkward as writers struggle to introduce them properly. Case in point, when Elle and Gideon left, we got two new characters. While Prentiss was introduced, Rossi's was more stilted. There wasn't time to make it more smooth and still handle the other story arcs.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason those changes were successful is because the show was still relatively young at that point; people hadn't become quite as attached to the team members. Now is too late to make such a drastic change involving characters in the main cast.

Please leave Paget, AJ, and all of the other full time cast members ALONE. It's ridiculous that a top 10 network would risk their status as such by ruining one of the shows that contribute to their success.

Shellie said...

I cannot believe that they are going to cut out JJ (AJ) & Printece (Paget). JJ has been there since the beginning & things WILL NOT be the same without her & Printece has been there since season 2 taking over for Elle & I believe they did good in replacing Elle with Printece. The show is going to be completely different & honestly I don't know if I will be able to watch it with these 2 leaving. I mean the only girl left will be Garcia...and if they cut Garcia well then thats just as bad as them cutting one of the guys like Morgan, Reed, Hotch, or Rossi. And Garcia can't be the only girl left on the team. I think they should left it alone, keep the same cast who cares the cost because they are going to end up losing ALOT of viewers by making this choice...there will be tons of told ya so's if they cut the girls & their ratings plummit. So my input leave well enough alone..this is the "team" that I've grown to love over all the seasons & honestly don't see how it's going to work with 2 of them being gone!

I absolutely love the show and don't want ANYONE on the team to leave. I hope CBS reconsider their decision. It will be a HUGE mistake to drop AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewster's role.

Cutting two of the favorite and main characters of this show is horrible, and what makes it even worse is that they are both women. These two characters are strong female characters that women can relate to. Not only that these two actresses themselves are the reason why most people watch the show in the first place. If there are no female cast memebers how does CBS expect females to watch the show. Personally, AJ and Paget not only play two of my favorite characters they are also two of my favorite actresses. I have watched Paget in everything she's been in since Friends. I have watched everything AJ has been in since The Virgin Suicides to Higher Ground to Tru Calling and Final Destination 2 and now Criminal Minds. Please CBS rethink this awful descision before it kills the show.

Aly said...

As someone said before that something was missing when AJ was on maternity leave, I hated those episodes. The whole reason the BAU works so well is they, like the cast, have a connection and history that makes is all come together so well. Also when the episodes pre-Prentiss come on in reruns I don't watch because even though Prentiss replaced Elle, Elle to me never fit in with the team/cast like Paget/Prentiss does. This works becuase of all of them and the chemistry (friendly) that the cast has. In all the interviews we have seen you can tell the cast all have deep respect for each other, and it's showing in their support right now.

I watch this show becuase I get to see strong female women, who while JJ has a kid, she didn't give up her career for.

Anonymous said...

CBS I seriously hope you reconsider this crappy decision. Paget should be a full time cast member as should AJ Cook.
If CBS doesn't reconsider you will have lost a viewer!!!

Unknown said...

I think this is the worst idea. Both AJ Cook and Paget Brewster are essential to the cast of Criminal Minds. The one major thing that makes Criminal Minds what it is- is the group dynamic. They are a perfect cast and you cannot subtract anyone from it because it will just be a tragedy. Cut the other criminal minds spinoff if you NEED the money but do not cut the criminal minds cast. Please.

I can't believe it! What are they thinking? Kicking two (well, 1 1/2...) of my three favorite characters off the show is definitely NOT a smart choice. What's next? Hotch getting almost killed - again? Rossi retiring - again? Reid relapsing to get rid off him, too?...

I finally had the chance to catch up on Season 5, and this is the news that greets me when I come online to tell everyone how much I loved the last few eps of the season? I feel sick now...

I don't think anyone is going to understand why a spin-off is created while the main show and its cast get slapped in the face. Or rather stabbed in the back because this is how it feels to me.

Each character is what makes this show so great. By taking away any of them will just destroy the show. This is just too sad that CBS would make such a fatal decision that does not make any sense at all. Paget and AJ are fabulous and do not deserve this at! Just devastating...

So very disappointed. Just discovered this fantastic show & was ready to order Seasons 2-4 on DVD (cause I love Paget Brewster) when this sexist news broke. Now I'm definately not ordering or watching until she has a contract. I guarantee the men make a lot more then AJ & Paget-but no, cut an already small female presence. I hope Charlie Sheen ends up in jail and CBS has to eat his ridiculous contract.

The real FBI, just like the military and the police department, is no longer the Boys Club that it once was. At present time, Criminal Minds does a wonderful job of demonstrating this. Not only are one of their regular agents a female, but their computer tech genius (another area that used to be so male-driven) and their voice to the world are also female. Cutting these two actresses, in whole or in part, would be like a step backwards for Criminal Minds. Even if they replaced JJ's character with another woman, it would still send the message that the females are more expendable than the males. Yes, they might argue, Gideon left. But that was his choice.
I believe that these actresses have proven their true talent, their charm and their watchability time and again, and it would truly be a mistake to expell them from this obviously close-knit cast.

V said...

This is a huge mistake. The show doesn't need to be "refreshed". JJ and Emily are just as essential to the BAU team as the men. To treat their characters otherwise is appalling.

The team wasn't having it when Section Chief Erin Strauss tried to tear apart the BAU, and the fan's clearly aren't standing for it now. Leave our show alone.

Anonymous said...

If they are trying to save money, why are the kicking off 1 female completely and reducing another's role? Women get less money in all fields that they compete in with men. So by saving money you are going to do this to two females instead of men, when they earn more money then women? Sexism at its best...and to say all people are created equal. You'd think stuff like this wouldn't keep happening after we elected a African American to the White House but nope discrimination will never stop if things like this happen.

It works! Please, please, please, please, please don't change this! I think I would be too upset to watch the show anymore. It's pulling everything apart. I feel terrible. I don't understand this ridiculous decision. If this about money, then CBS is being "penny wise and pound foolish". Both Ms. Cook and Ms. Brewster have a huge fan base. CBS should check fanfiction.net and see that Emily Prentiss is the one that has if not the most story lines than one of the most. If this is because of the spin-off, CBS is being ridiculous. They are destroying their flagship series for a series that isn't even on the air. Sorry, Forrest Whittaker is a great actor but the pilot was terrible. A great actor cannot carry an entire show. Criminal Minds because it is an ensemble but that doesn't mean that one or two persons are expendable. Gestalt psychology postulates that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". That is true with Criminal Minds. Maybe I'll watch;maybe I won't but not with the same interest, passion and dedication. Shame on you CBS and please reconsider.

I have watched Criminal Minds from the very beginning, and I own the first four seasons. I have always watched for the quality of the cast & writing. AJ & Paget are essential to this cast. They bring a balance, a way to deal with the emotions that the often very dark subject matter brings up. The interaction & chemistry between the characters because of the the chemistry between the cast itself. You can't replace this!!!! Please reconsider such a STUPID decision!!!!!!

This last season of CM was disheartening with a bunch of hack writers who had no clue as to the characters they're writing for.

And now the ultimate misogynistic travesty: cutting AJ and limiting Paget. Emily, for me, makes every other character more likable. Rossi annoyed me to no end until his relationship with Prentiss was developed. And a huge theme in Season 4 was how important JJ was to the unit when she had to go on maternity leave. What changed in season 5?

For me, comes down to this: no AJ and Paget and this is one less viewer and fan.

CBS has had high ratings and I think its success has corrupted the network. They surely act like tyrants. CM has made them a ton of money, is a well respected show, has a broad audience, and is well liked around the world. This is thanks to a fantastic cast, great writing and directing work. CBS is certainly not hurting for money and the CM cast doesn't deserve this treatment. AJ & Paget have contributed greatly to the success of the show. Firing them or reducing their screen time is sheer madness. I think we can easily make due without the big name unsubs. It's not like there aren't any talented actors out who can play a villain. I'm sure they paid Jim Curry quite well and he's even coming back next season. I don't care that much about him.
I want to let you know that I am supporting my Paget/Emily sisters and have been emailing, posting, and calling. I am confident that we can fight this together!

Want to save money? Fire one of the overpriced CBS execs or lower those ridiculously high salaries. Not like CBS execs aren't replaceable! Get a grip CBS, without us the viewing audience you are NOTHING! First TG, now AJ & Paget? Stop screwing with us!

It will be hard to watch although I love the rest of the cast. CBS is lame. They cancelled the only other show I watched on their channel and now this. What a bunch of greedy losers. If they want budget cuts cancel the spinoff. Forest Whitaker is a fine actor but that pilot didn't do much for me in terms of getting me excited about a spinoff. Creative reasons my ass. JJ is not my favourite character on Criminal Minds but I think she is crucial to the team and the show.

JJ is instrumental in which cases the BAU take on. She expertly handles the press & local law enforcement agencies. She takes care of the families of victims with compassion & professionalism. Just as Garcia is the essential tech & info hub of the team, JJ is the equally essential communications & people hub of the team.
JJ is supportive of every team member. She is Garcia's friend & confidante, Reid's big sister & she makes Hotch smile. She holds a unique & essential place in the team. A team which is a family. The show has proven that in so many ways. With their fight against Strauss who has repeatedly tried to break them up, working together so seamlessly, playing & joking together, with their love & support they've shown each other when one of them was down literally and figuratively. Probably the most poignant scene that captures this is at Haley's funeral when the rest of the team are called away.
They have a bond & a history together. You can not just slot in another character to 'fill the shoes' of JJ. It won't work. You will lose something precious, rare & irreplaceable.
There is so much more scope for JJ's character. We have only seen glimpses of her unique role within the team so far, she is also a fully fledged FBI agent which could be explored more. We have had tantalising snippets of her past that have not been anywhere near fully explored. Not to mention that she seems to be the only member of the team (with the possible exception of Garcia with Kevin) to have a successful long term committed romantic relationships & is a young working mother. That is an incredibly important aspect to the character of JJ. I can't understand why the network who took such a wonderful step to follow the natural journey AJ Cook had during her pregnancy through JJ now considers her expendable. Such a disappointment CBS please rectify your mistake before it's too late.

Even after two and a half days, I still cannot get over the shock that your company is going to axe AJ Cook and demote Paget Brewster to a lower episode count on Crimial Minds. Apart from people amazing actresses and each bringing something to the show that no one else could, the both portray a strong female image for female fans.

I am training in Criminal Profiling, and it is the model set by both AJ and Paget's characters that have forced me forward with my desicion

I have no doubt in my mind that if both actresses are not reinstated to full contracts, I will not be returning to Criminal Minds, or anything endorsed and advertised by CBS.

I would advise you to think about you choice before it is too later. We will not be silenced. Bring AJ and Paget back full time.

Do not make the mistake of dissecting the best ensemble cast on television. All of the actors bring something special and different to the show. Although I love the rest of the cast- I will not watch a whittled-down version. Please rethink your strategy to save money. If your loyal viewers decide, like me, to stop watching CM and definitely won't be watching any spin-offs, the money will you save by firing/reducing these ladies won't be worth it.

I simply feel like I got stabbed in the back...First Cold Case & Ghost Whisperer and now THIS...One of the most steadily successful show on TV and CBS wants to mess it up. Hope the spin off doesnt get pick up.

The best show here in Tunisia is Criminal Minds, and i don't understand the reason of this stupid and idiot decision. You don't make anything because CM's fans exist, you must stop!Don't scream our favorite show!

This is the best show CBS has ever produced, and why you might say?? Because it has the best cast of any prime time drama series! They all fit together and work off of each others strengths. I was sad when Gideon was written out, but devastated now. CBS has us wrapped up in these characters! If they cut anyone from this cast, it will be like cutting their own throats. Why oh why do they have to mess with the BEST?? We do not need a spin off of Criminal Minds, nothing will or can compare to the original! Signed: Kim Mills, Indiana

Both A.J. and Paget are amazing. We need them both on CM. It would not be the same. My question is why make changes when changes do not need to be made? All for some spin-off? Seriously?

Anonymous said...

Yea criminal minds is done if they cut these two characters. I'm not gonna watch it if this happens

Anonymous said...

Ridiculous decision. The show won't even be worth watching

Dr. Jason Moon Ph.D. said...

You are making a mistake, A J Cook is a vital and classic part to Criminal Minds. If she is cut from the show, then I will cut Criminal Minds from my tv schedule.

Alex Walker said...

The character of JJ brings a certain compassion to the show--an FBI agent who still has her ability to empathize with the families of the victims during the search. There is not another character currently on the show who has the ability to do this so eliminating JJ would leave a hole that cannot be filled without changing the basic nature of another on the team, something that would not make sense.

Emily brings a hard shell with sensibility and semi-hidden heart to the show, someone who can roll with the boys while still being all woman. There are also back-stories left to be told for this character.

I'm not sure how someone came up with the idea to eliminate the female roles in the field leaving only a lonely woman behind a computer screen, unless they are planning on hiring women at lesser pay in order to keep four men at their current pay and that, my friends, has overtones of misogyny in the making.

I am so dissappointed ... and i'm officially going to stop watching this sexist show .... i was hoping that they would change it up and give one of these charachters some ass kicking scenes .. I love how they are getting rid of a regular reducing another one ... and getting some new bxch to get used to ... BULL!! ..

Anonymous said...

okay, this is not funny anymore CBS. First of all no one really wants to see the spin off its gonna fail like most spinoffs do. Removing the chars JJ and EP will not only ruin the chemestry of the cast but the show as well. Strong feamale chars that are not sex objects are exceedilgly rare and you are pissing off a lot of female viewers with this action. I would advice you to do whatever you can to make sure that those chars stay on the show or you WILL lose a lot of your fan base

Av8rwinn said...

A protest should be organized outside CBS for this. I am in shock. They should get better writers to refresh the show, not change the actors.

Anonymous said...

BULL I'm done watching this once wonderfull now demeaning to females show .... they're getting rid of the girls who are on the field and without a doubt keeping the one thats on her ass all day ... I'm sorry what year is it again?? what century are we in? Another reason to love NCIS ... Ziva kick major ass even if she's fight a guy 3 times her size .. and abby has proven to kick ass also ... and so have most of the female characters that have been on NCIS .. Take a hint cm idiots!!

Anonymous said...

Please keep AJ and Paget, they helped make your show a success

Anonymous said...

Why would you think people will watch the spin-off if you piss off the current fan base??
The only reason NCIS LA did so well was because they NCIS fans watched NCIS LA afterwards and kept watching. It is a different show completely with different characters.

All I have to say is CM, you need to be CREATIVE. Your writing and story need to be CREATIVE. NOT and I repeat NOT the great actors you have on board. Your "creative" reason should be new writers and storyline.

What the heck is CBS thinking? Paget and AJ's characters help make this my fav. show. Without them I wont watch anymore.

Thomas Gibson, Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, Aj Cook, Paget Brewster, Kirsten Vangsness.. keep it that way CBS!. You've already taken out Gideon (Mandy Patinkin) and Elle (Lola Glaudini).. please don't take out JJ and Emily..thousands of fans out there would be very grateful! don't turn CM into boys club. i don't think i could watch CM without these 2 wonderful characters.. cost cutting?! you can do that to other shows but not Criminal Minds..really.. and if you're really going to add up a new member of the team... where's the cost cutting in that..? like, come on.. please please.... keep the original BAU team.. thanks much=)

this will be sad.. i love Prentice's character and JJ's..
CM won't be the same without them

I'm appalled at this decision to axe AJ and reduce Paget's role in this very popular show. If the show was floundering one could understand making changes but for a successful show with popular characters, there is no excuse to change the format. JJ and Prentiss are very popular for all kinds of reasons but are wonderful role models for women of all ages. CBS need to rethink what they are doing, especially if the rumour about bringing another female into the show is true....why do this when they already have 2 fabulous women, it just doesn't make sense. It's funny how they can find the money for a spin-off (that doesn't seem at all popular with viewers) but don't have the money to keep these 2 women onboard. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I am still in shock! Come on CBS change your Mind! Look at the petition we have over 23000 sigs!!

Anonymous said...

Listen to your fans CBS!!! WE WANT AJ AND PAGET BACK!

Anonymous said...

CBS change your mind! no one is happy about this decision. Why do you want to mess with such loyal and dedicated fans! Bad move CBS Bad move.

Anonymous said...

AJ and Paget are the heart of the show! Criminal minds will neve be the sam without them!!

emily_2002 said...

If they really need to save money, couldn't they make the creative decision to have Rossi go on vacation for half a season, have Hotch spend more time with Jack, and have JJ spend a bit more time with her kids? There's more ways to save than to just cut a beloved character - why not make more characters part-time? That's one of the beauties of an ensemble cast.

Anonymous said...

There must be some other option to save money other then CUTTING AJ and Paget... how about CUTIING THE SPINOFF.. no one wants it.. we just want AJ and Paget!

Anonymous said...

How is the show going to function with only ONE female! Save AJ and Paget and Save the show!

liz j said...

its not fair your taking the best two girls off....you should just leave them on there....why should they be only on a few episodes???them and there team mates are what make the show???

Anonymous said...

I signed the petition. I can't believe this decision. CSI suffered with all the actor changes and I don't think this show will survive the changes purposed. If that is your objective it will come to fruition by the end of this season if you persist on this course. I love these characters and will be very disappointed if they leave the show. Please do not do this and bring these characters back in their normal roles.

Gina K said...

I think firing and demoting AJ and Paget is ridiculous - It won't be the same show and I'm not sure I'm interested in watching anymore if they do this.

I guess they don't realize it's the entire cast of characters and their relationships that really make the show good.

NO NO NO, CBS IS MAKING BOATLOADS OF CASH FROM CRIMINAL MINDS, IT IS ALREADY IN SYNDICATION HERE IN NY FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS ON 2 CHANNELS SEVERAL NITES/WEEK. I DON'T BUY THAT BULL THAT THIS IS ABOUT SALARIES, AJ & PAGET ARE GREAT ACTRESSES WHO ROUNDED OUT THE MALE CHARACTERS, AS HOTCH SAID "THEY ARE A WELL WORKING TEAM" AND TOLD HIS BOSS TO BACK OFF, MAYBE CBS IDIOTS SHOULD LISTEN TO THE WORDS THEY WROTE

Anonymous said...

I have an opinion. This is BS.

Last night I watched a CM rerun. Each time Emily or AJ spoke, I tried to imagine it coming out of one of the guys. Look you a*** at CBS, it DOESN'T work! The fans don't need telling but you seem to! Keep our ladies. Forget about a new one, and forget about the spin-off. I'm sure FW can find work elsewhere. This is a travesty and a sick joke. Sort it out!

Becky said...

Leave Emily alone! Next to Hotch, she is my fave! CM rocks leave it alone!

Jennifer said...

I'm still shock as well. I only started watching Criminal Minds after Paget Brewster became a regular.

I love JJ and Emily. This sucks! Other shows more than 7 regulars such as CSI NY!!!

I will stop watching.

Unknown said...

This is ridiculous. I still cannot believe that this is the answer CBS has for budgeting issues. I get that this is a difficult time in our economy, but JJ and Emily are integral parts of the team. The chemistry won't be the same without them!

I have watched Criminal Minds religiously since it first aired, and it has consistently been one of my favorite shows on TV. By following through with this, CBS will be altering something that doesn't need to be changed AT ALL.

If this is being done for the spin off, then they should know that they are making a huge mistake!!

Seeing as A.J will no longer be on the cast, and Paget will only be occurring in a limited sense, I no longer see the point in watching Criminal Minds. I am extremely disappointed with this decision.

Bad decision

Is CBS purposely trying to kill this show? Criminal Minds is one of my favorites, but the last season didn't do much for me. Getting rid of AJ and Paget might be the final nail in the coffin. I don't know if I'm going to continue watching it.

Alan said...

DON'T GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amanda said...

I am assuming that with the decision to drop AJ and limit Paget, that CBS no longer wants to be the most watched network. I guess it is just to stressful. I know that if they go through with this, CM will be the only show I watch on CBS. That will free up all my nights. So more free time for me.

Anonymous said...

Dear CBS "executives",
just thought you should know that if you don't FIX THIS, then I will no longer be watching your network. enough said.

Meredith said...

I'll probably watch CM since I love Hotch but it won't be the same without Prentiss in every show and no JJ... What makes this show work is the cast love for each other. Why does CBS insist on screwing that up??? I will not watch anything else on CBS though.

Maria Davis said...

Paget Brewster is the main reason I watch the show. Her portrayal of strength gives me the inspiration to keep fighting despite terrible situations. I won't watch the show without her character and JJ. How is that they can get a new actress while cutting another one when they say it's for "budget"... RIDICULOUS!!!

Penny said...

I LOVE Paget Brewster! She has always been so excited to be on Criminal Minds and has given back more than 100%. This is a wonderful group of cast, best ever in my opinion. Quit messing with a winning formula! Save our CURRENT women and forget the spin off to save your precious money.

Anne said...

CBS, you are incredibly sexist and I cannot believe that you think you can get away with this! Consider your station boycotted!

Barb said...

hey everyone, I hear that NBC has a really good lineup for the Fall... and the shows even have strong, female characters playing a major role. Imagine that. Ciao CBS.

Michelle said...

The biggest mistake in marketing is thinking that you know what your customer wants but not really knowing... Good work CBS, for a great showing of this concept in action. You have absolutely NO CLUE what we fans want! And this after the same thing last year! Go back to school and leave our show alone. Prentiss and JJ stay.

Justine said...

I'm really happy to see that people share my strong reaction to CBS' appalling decision. I don't buy for a second that this has anything to do with creativity. It has everything to do with money. It's pathetic to see Charlie Sheen paid 2 mil per episode but they can't afford to keep the Criminal Minds cast intact? Many many fans have given them great ideas where to get their budget cuts from. There's no need for this sexist decision.

If Emily Prentiss is not on for the full season next season, I will not be watching. If Jennifer Jareau is taken permanently off air I will not be watching.

Prentiss is a wonderful character and role model, like no other on screen right now. It baffles me that you would want to cut down her part. Same thing with JJ. I can't imagine this show without them. There won't be a show without them.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe CBS thinks they can get away with this. Paget and AJ are the only reason I watch Criminal Minds. I don't watch it to see Reid word vomit, I watch to see these two kick ass role models show the guys how it is done.

Anonymous said...

I love this show but instead of having a spin off show maybe they should keep AJ and Paget! If these two do not become FULL time cast members I will NOT continue to watch CM

Anonymous said...

i rather have the entire original cast together than have some spin-off that will not last

Shadowed Storm said...

I'm staring at my computer in shock right now... I turn my back for a second and now one of the few shows that I make a actual effort to watch is being more or less gutted- I have always loved that Criminal Minds isn't afraid to have strong women as lead characters. I will be sorely disappointed in the show if this changes.

Alex said...

That can´t be true.
Also in Germany (my home country) CM has many fans. I think they are also confused about the decision to cut the CM cast. The show would not be the same. CM needs Paget and AJ. Both are dearly loved. All actors have their own part but the most important thing is that the characters built an unit. And when the team lost one of its members than the CM doesn´t work. It has to give other ways to save money!

Andrea said...

If the girls are gone, so am I. And I'll boycott the spin-off, nobody wants to see anyway, too...

Shame on you CBS!
