CRIMINAL MINDS: ANYONE HAVE AN OPINION?

The most ridiculous decision ever, CBS. If it's so obvious to all of us how this choice of yours is going to turn out, why haven't you big shots foreseen this happening?

Anonymous said...

This makes no sense at all. Forget the spinoff--the episode introducing it this season was awful anyway--and put the money toward keeping these talented and lovely ladies on the show.

Maite said...

We (all the fans around the world) want Aj Cook and Paget Brewster on Criminal Minds!!

Jolie said...

I think we can all see from Facebook, Twitter, CM message board, various blogs and fan sites that financial and/or creative reasons are not enough to justify the dropping of AJ and Paget's limit in screen time.
I'm sad, angry, confused and wish we could do more.
An extreme thought. The cast go on strike?
But I'm sure CBS will feel it once people stop watching because our favorite characters are gone

Anonymous said...

This is bull! Why would they do this. They've been together for a long time and to just cut them like that. It doesn't make sense in my book. Im very hurt and shocked. I can't believe it.

Anonymous said...

I'll never understand CBS's and the show's producer's decision to eliminate AJ Cook and downsize Paget Brewster's role. If this is cost-cutting, it's counterproductive. You'll lose more money when the ratings take a bigger hit than you expect! You'll lose more money when people stop buying the DVD's! If this is a creative decision, well here is an idea -- be creative with the amazing cast that you have! Write more for the ladies, not marginalize them!

I'm a female viewer in the desired key demographics for advertisers and I can gaurantee this; without AJ Cook and a full-time Paget Brewster I will no longer watch this show. I have already canceled my pre-order of Season 5 DVDs on Amazon and I have cancelled my DVR recordings for the show! No Cook; No Brewster; no viewer!

Please reconsider CBS and The Powers That Be!

Best way to "freshen up" a veteran show is to find new writers, not get rid of the actors. They can only give you what you write them. There is not a thing wrong with either actor and if you, I don't know, actually wrote them storylines that were compelling, that would go a long way to freshening up the show. Getting rid of AJ and lessening Paget's role is one sure fire way to lose this viewer completely. And if you bring in some new woman? That's just the biggest insult to the fans I've ever seen.

CrystalWitch said...

I don't understand the logic - let's remove one actress that the fans love, and reduce the screen time for another... then bring in a new female cast member... Clearly the PTBs feel the need to HAVE more than one female in the cast, or they wouldn't be bringing in someone new, so WHY bother. If they can afford a new character, they can afford to keep the original ones.

Anonymous said...

Criminal Minds is the only mainstream show I bother watching, mainly because of the representation of women. We have three strong and intelligent women who actually display a really great female dynamic and are an integral and respected part of the team. They aren't just eye candy (although all are attractive), they present a rounded image of what women are. I'm beyond disappointed by this decision.

I also like the men's characters - all are strong and powerful, but also sensitive and intelligent, which is a rare combination. They aren't sexist or pervs, they are genuinely good people. I'm afraid that without the strong female presence, Criminal Minds will turn into a boys club and therefore make it totally unrelatable for me.

I have really loved Criminal Minds over the years. It represents a side to crime that we don't really see. It's intelligent and understanding. This is the first time I'm actually doubting the validity of the series. CBS you are totally letting down the fans.

Get Three and a Half Men off TV. It is totally useless and extremely sexist. Keep Paget and AJ on Criminal Minds. They actually manage to contribute something positive to the television industry.

This will be long, so bare with me.

When Criminal Minds was first released in Sweden, I couldn't watch it because it collided with a TV-show my mum would always watch. So I only managed to watch an episode or two, whenever they weren't around.

However, now about a year or so ago, I bought the first three seasons, on a whim. I had no idea if I'd like it, but I felt like it was something I had to do.

In 9 days I watched 65 episodes (some on season 4 also) and I fell in love. My favorite show had been CSI for the past six or so years, and in just one instant another show came and stole my heart away.

The characters, the plots, the camera angles, the music, the dialogue; everything was pretty amazing and I couldn't get enough.

I was sad to see "Gideon" leave, but Joe Mantegna is doing the best job ever as "Rossi", and I really can't imagine the show without him. I wasn't as sad to see "Elle" leave, as I never really liked her character. However, Paget's portrayal of "Prentiss" has quickly become a backbone for the tv-show.

And "JJ" has always been there, as a character that's always stood out on her own way, and AJ's work on said character, is mindblowing.

We're talking two actresses, making acting into a work of art - and they're doing it in a TV-show and not an Oscar's winning motion picture. How many actresses do you know, that can do this? Not many, I can assure you of that, because there aren't a large number of them out there.

To cut these two brilliang women from this show, is just killing the show faster than CSI did when they let Petersen go.

I've always had a special relationship with shows, books, movies and characters; because when I was a kid I had no friends. None, whatsoever. I was as lonely as one can be, and I had a crappy childhood. Characters have always been my friends, because as a child it made me happier to read and see myself running across fields in Narnia with Aslan by my side - than accept the fact that I had no one that really cared for me.

I'm 21 at this point, but this has all still stuck, and I still get attached to characters/shows/movies/books.

Criminal Minds is no exception.

On more than one occasion, I've cried my eyes out about the show. I've laughed with the characters, I've spent rainy days with them, I've spent rough nights with them when I can't sleep. I've cried with them, suffered with them, and felt joy with them.

And now because of MONEY, they're ripping two of the most charasmatic characters away?

I say this is bullshit, and this is what I must say:

If they go - I go.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Pia, from Sweden.

Why? I do not understand anything.
If you want to finish with "CM"; give it a worthy end but do not do stupid experiments.

JJ and Prentiss are necessary

Anonymous said...

If AJ and Paget aren't already legally committed to appearing in any of season 6 episodes & CBS do not reinstate them full time at full pay I hope they walk & let them figure out a way to carry on their cliffhanger/story lines without them. I won't be watching so I don't care just how crappy those episodes will be. CBS terrible decision on so many levels. I don't think CBS deserves hit shows to be honest.

Tonya said...

If they take AJ and Paget off the show, I think I will stop watching it just like I stopped watching CSI:. It will not be the same and the ratings will for sure plummit. Think about it CBS. Can you really afford to have ratings go down on ANY of your shows? hmmm...

Sarah said...

I can't believe they're letting go of two of the only three females on the show... other than the computer whiz, cos obviously every crime show needs a quarky female computer whiz, right? JJ I can do with out, her character does nothing for me. I would much rather Rossi have gone that Prentiss though. I think its bizarre that they would let go of anyone though, but much more bizarre that they would let go of two females at once. Doesn't make much sense.

PhattyChyk said...

I'm in shock, why is it always Criminal Minds taking all the cuts when it's the highest rated show on CBS. None of the other shows have gotten cuts or lost cast members its not right and the producers need to stop being whimps and suck ups and fight for our beloved cast and show!!!!

PhattyChyk said...

I Believe its Petition Time!!!!!!!

Oh i have an opinion all right!Waht hell it's cbs thinking? I know that the other actors on the show will hold everything together but i just love AJ character and i really gonna miss her and eventually Paget as well because it's gonna take long for those dudes cut her as well.

Mags said...

do you think maybe the decision makers are men and are short? Short man syndrome seems the likely reason. I wouldnt normally resort to making an issue personal, however this is such an idiotic decision and based on such sexist ideals, I realise we are not dealing with normal intelligent people. But then, why not scrap the lot, lets get rid of scripted drama totally and just go with the dribble of wannabes on reality TV. Its obvious from the press release from CBS that they think we, the viewing public are mindless idiots.

OK this is the second time they have messed with a fave of mine, the first time being CSI NY. To the point I stopped watching this season. Now this craziness from CBS from my(now) fave show.
Way to go for these 'brilliant' ideas of CBS. They suck.

That stupid boring spin off gets the go ahead, yet they do this?

Great way to bring in viewers!

Sorry I am so angry and yet again disappointed that they have messed with a show I enjoy.

Perhaps I shall now have NO Wednesday night lineup!

I don't know what kind of viewer demographics CBS has for CM, but virtually every person I know who is a fan is also a woman, precisely because of the strong female characters, and the way the team is presented as a cohesive group. Even my mother, who only watches medical dramas, is a huge fan.
CBS, are you trying to kill the show???

It can not be, when I read it thought it was a joke. But what are you going? The series would not be the same without them, AJ this since the first season, there is no Criminal Minds without them. I sincerely would cease to see for this change, because besides me find it embarrassing that removed by female characters so well. When none of them can continue the series. You say you're going to get the same time that JJ Garcia on the show? they do not. Without them there is no criminal minds, period. Without them it does not follow. Because they are unique, and that put me fifty girls alike will not be the same. The series is great, economic problems? therefore resolved that by removing other things, like some special effect or something. But take away my heroes? they do not. Because you can save on other things, otherwise they fall a little ground, but it is this dismissal of AJ that if? no. Is that we can not be true. As can be so useless? if the first to win with how good the series is them. The desire they have to load a very good series for any nonsense. The desire to destroy the fans who follow the series. because nothing else will.

Honestly, this show keeps shooting themselves in the foot! Let's get rid of writers .... let's get rid of a popular female cast member...

CBS, you have a top 10 show...good grief.

Get rid of the spin off because I have no interest in it in the least. I will not be watching it.

Plus, with the lack of decent writing this season... and losing a cast member for the next season...I'm finished with the show.

CBS... have fun running a top 10 show into the ground. See ya.

I'm finished with this. I will no longer watch Criminal Minds nor any spin off.

uhmyeah said...

The show is discribed as
being "long-running" and there is a reason for that. We love it the way it is. I know they pride themselves on being story-driven but the facts remains that people connect with people. Using your cast solely to supply information to a story line or throw in a personal or funny bit occassionally does't prevent us from watching the show just FOR those personal details. The characters we identify with are not the unsubs. If you need a new character that person can be part-time. I'm not a big fan of soap operas (I only ever watched one-"Dark Shadows") but the fact remains that they have been the longest running shows on TV. On personal relationships alone really. We don't want a new relationship-we want to enjoy the one(s) we have more. The history we share with these two actors is important to us. The BAU is supposed to be an international organization; try exploring that; try developing a profile with a strong cultural component; try developing a profile with a mythology; try connecting a story to Garcia's volunteer work with suvivors or JJ's volunteer work with (I forget now- both were briefly mentioned in case-promotion dialog in single episodes). The bookshelves are lined with ways for the writers to think outside the box, none of which requires a different cast. It requires more personal details about the characters that we already care about. Be a bit more character-driven (really, we know there's more to these people than you're showing us)and think less like the last century men's club you're looking like right now. These days women can like/love other women- and we identify strongly with JJ and Emily. It will get ugly however if you try replacing our beautiful women with more PYT eye-candy disguised as an intelligent BAU agent... There are also other ways to make money off CM-where are your marketing people anyway? Publicity? One video game after 5 seasons? The DVDs are good:behind the scenes, actor (I find the term "actress" a bit patronising- so don't read anything into that) interviews, bloopers. Everybody getting on twitter was the best promotional move you've made in quite a while, CBS. And that wasn't even your idea. You're really looking like a production without a plan-flailing about looking for something to fix when it's not broken. Improve what you have. Develope the relationships the viewers have with the chatacters. I'm not talking intra-unit relationships-those are established and just need routine maintenance. I mean what makes each individual tick. What do they hide from the team? They have to be hiding something since we all have weaknesses and they are not allowed to appear weak in front of each other... So if you're concerned about being creative, we're not asking you not to be creative, we're asking you to be MORE creative than this [silliness].

jackie said...

I can't believe they are doing this. They have a good thing
going with this show, and the
only thing they are going to
achieve by cutting A.J. Cook, and
reducing appearances by Paget Brewster, is lose their viewing
audience. I for one stop watching
shows that get rid of characters/
actors/actresses that i like on
a show because they are the ones that make me watch. They are the
ones that pull me in week after week. Why get rid of A.J., if
your only going to replace her
with another new cast member?
That doesn't make sense to me.
Please CBS rethink what you are
doing, and keep A.J and Paget
on full time. You'll keep your
entire viewing audience if you
do.

They are punishing AJ, pure and simple. She had a baby and at the first opportunity, they are cutting her character. Girlfriend's got a law suit on her hands! And, WTF, didn't CBS just give Charlie Sheen like millions of dollars to stay with 2.5 Men? Dude's a walking disaster and they give him all this money and cut someone with integrity and decency all for a few dollars? It's sexism, pure and simple. MGG (Who I adore, thank you) can spend an entire season looking like a hobo reject form the sixties (so glad you cut the hair) and they don't do anything with his character. But, Heaven forbid AJ get pregnant and spend a little time getting her shape back (which, by the way, she looks hotter than she did pre-baby) - and they cut her. Sexist Pigs the whole lot of them. They have joined NBC on the Stupidity Wagon!

CBS didn't ask me who my favorite actresses are in CM and they are AJ and Paget. This decision is going to ruin the show. Honestly. I don't think I'll watch CM, it won't be the same. IT'S A TEAM!!! You can see the spark among them. The show works because of the TEAM.

Aren't there enough male leads in prime time these days? We love our strong women! It took a lot of guts for these roles to be made, kept up and played, and we would like to keep them! What's next, revoking our right to vote?

Anonymous said...

I don't get it!!! AJ and Paget are two very talented, beautiful and outstanding actresses! The dynamic of the team and cast is what sets CM apart from other (crime) shows. Where is the logic in destroying such a wonderful show?

And if money is all what CBS cares about, then I hope they realize that firing AJ and decreasing Paget's screen time will ultimately backfire (the ratings will drop and thus CBS looses money).

Right now, I am more than pissed!

Keep AJ and Paget on the team! The fans love them!

CBS needs to rethink this. they should just cut the spin off. im not gonna watch it. it is about the originals. aj and paget are great. they need to stay or im not gonna watch it anymore. i will watch my dvds with them on it and not give CBS any views. they will lose many viewers. sucks for them!

i love Criminal Minds...i am very happy that i can watch it every day.i like all the team members..and i can't imagine a good show without them.

I just wanted to drop my comment/opinion in here as well, because hey - strength in numbers right?

I'm on board with everyone. Aj and Paget are talented actresses who play their characters every week with grace, strength and dynamism. They are an integral part of the team. And it is clear that the fans as well as their cast members and peers feel the same.

CBS should be more loyal to the shows that make them the number 1 network. Criminal Minds is weekly a top 25 show, averaging about 12-14 million viewers - and that's with barely any advertisement or support from their parent network.

A lucrative network with an expanse of income ranging from syndication, advertising, DVD sales et al I doubt is hurting so much that they need to cut the salaries of two female leads who haven't received a raise in 5 years and don't cost nearly as much as Charlie Sheen or their Big Bang Theory cast members.

Not cool, CBS, not cool.

Anonymous said...

I am shocked, upset, disappointed and extremely angry. That this would be even a consideration of CBS it just unbelieveable. Two of the most talented and beautiful actresses that they've got and on TV all together and they're doing this to them?! serisously?! and to say it is for creative reasons is BS. if they wanted to keep things fresh within the programme they would be consulting with the writers on new story lines, not taking out a character and reducing the other. If these two characters were to be reduced from the show it would not be the same and it would be a loss on CBS's behalf. The real reason for this stupidity is- as always- financial. If you need money CBS take it off the new crappy spin-off you are making, not one of your most profitable and succesful shows that you already have running awesomely. If these characters are to go i don't think i could continue watching the programme and i would most definatley not be watching another programme produced by CBS. it's a serious mistake and one they will regret.

AJ AND PAGET! WE LOVE AND SUPPORT YOU.

Anonymous said...

They are very important to the show, I don't understand how anyone would want to continue watching the show. And why are you only cutting the ladies, sexism much?

Anonymous said...

I'm sad that they would consider cutting Paget's role. She is such an awesome kick ass agent! With a great sense of humor and chemistry with almost everyone she works with on the show. It would be nuts to cut her time.

Aj is so good at what she does. She just seems to be the mother of the team.

I get that costs are high, but I hope you can figure out a way to keep these lovely ladies on our favorite show.

To remove these two actresses would be to decrease the impact the show has. Fans will start choosing (as have I) to stop watching the show all together. Why watch a show that is only a pale comparison to the one that I loved for the last five years? I'm ashamed of you, CBS, I really am.

I know this sounds weird, but with firing AJ and reducing the numbers of Paget's episodes, I feel personally insulted.

Why not the guys? (don't get me wrong, I'd fight for them to stay, too) Why is it again the FEMALE cast that's replaced?

I feel disappointed and slightly anxious about womens' roles not only on TV but also in other aspects of life?
How are our children supposed to develope common sense if they learn that women are relaceable?

Badly done CBS! Badly done!

Becky said...

This has made me so angry - JJ & Emily are my favourite characters!

A really bad decision by CBS!

Diana said...

I read about this decision last night, and I'm still baffled this morning. I assume this is because CBS overpaid Charlie Sheen, (deadbeat and criminal), so they're trying to save money elsewhere. But I have to say this smacks of sexism, and seems illogical. Criminal Minds is one of the few shows CBS has that has been improving in ratings as seasons go on - I'm a testament to that fact because this past season of original episodes was the first one I'd watched on CBS, I got hooked on the show through A&E reruns last summer. And it was the core cast that's kept me hooked. I've grown to care about JJ and Emily and the rest of the leads, so if they decide to get rid of two of the leads I care about, I don't see any reason why I should stick around as a fan.

Scullycat said...

My advice: Forget the spinoff and keep the BAU team intact. Each and every character has a valuable part to play in the story!

Anonymous said...

As I struggled to choose between watching the very dramatic Criminal Minds last year or the mindless fun ABC airs at the same time. I chose CM because of the cast. Now that the cast has changed, what I watch will change too.

My love to the rest of the cast, but the total lack of respect shown to women by the treatment of the female cast is too much and I cannot in good conscience support that.

Unknown said...

It infuriates me that CBS is removing two strong women from TV, yes there are other shows with strong females on CBS, but right or wrong or neutral those shows do not have the draw that CM has. Not only are they removing two strong female characters, thus putting them out of work, (smart move in this economy), there is talk that they (CBS) will be bringing in a female character later in the season. CBS LEAVE IT ALONE!!

Anonymous said...

How about this: fire the current writers who have lost you your ratings, hire the ones you fired last season and keep the cast that everyone loves!

And don't condescend to the fans by calling it a "creative" decision. That's a pile of horse manure.

BIG Mistake! YOu are going to lose tons of viewers, including me!

Delphine W. said...

Clearly they need money for the spin off... only they should've thought about that earlier: would the fans prefer a spin off over two of the main characters of their favourite show? The answer is: HELL NO!
Criminal Minds is very popular over here (in France), but the French are not too keen on spin offs (NCIS Los Angeles is not that popular...). I don't think the fans will react really well.

Kelsey said...

I have very mixed feelings on this.

On one hand, if they had to do this to anyone, I'm kind of glad it's these two (sorry girls! I cringe just typing that). I have other on the show who are my absolute faves and I'm glad this didn't happen to them.

On the other hand, though, WHAT THE HELL? Everyone on the team is vital to the team, imo. This is quite possibly the only show I watch (present or past) that I don't view at least one of the characters as "dispensible". I love everyone, and to get rid of anyone is absolutely ridiculous! Especially if it's to pay for a spin off that may not even do well.

nako said...

This is one of the worst decisions CBS has made. Cutting two of the actors at all just to save money - undoubtedly for their new spinoff - is an idiotic idea, but to make them both female is just plain sexist. I've stuck with CM throughout the changes it's gone through over the years, and it's one of my favorite shows on television, but I don't honestly know if I'll WANT to watch if they cut AJ entirely and make Paget's role next to nonexistent.

Hello Criminal Minds,

You're the Best Crime Drama I have ever watched, and the most well written and smartest scripts ever written in television history in my opinion, When Mandy and Lola Left, I was very sad, And I always thought CM would bring Lola and Mandy Back to join with the other BAU members , It would be sooo good to see everyone on the team, 9 members instead of 7, However I'm so shock that you want to cut out A.J and Paget for creative Reasons... I love these girls so much, Without them, (or any of the cast members for instant) CM wouldn't be what it is, today !
Prentiss has to be my favorite female character of the show and I look up to Paget's character so much , Infact I look up to all of them.
There are some other shows from CBS which i think its not worth the watch, SERIOUSLY,
Criminal Minds is the best damn show ever ! Don't let the ratings drop furthur , Let them Stay on the show , Sil Vous Plait ?

Lots of Love from Singapore,

The show has been on a long time and has done well creating layers in characters - making us care about them. They are NOT disposable: easily replaced like paper plates. If the goal is making money - getting rid of people with no regard to the audience: why bother? It makes me feel (as a viewer) that investing myself into the show/characters isn't wise because total disregard is shown for that investment. I want AJ to stay and for Prentiss to be in every episode.

Anonymous said...

I still can't believe that they are even considering to cut AJ and reduce Paget's part!
Why rip apart a perfect team!?! I don't understand!
They are such amazing actresses, and the show would be totally wrong without them!!

And whats with the spin off show?
I would rather keep Paget and AJ and get rid of that!!

Stupid,stupid,stupid!!!!

DO NOT GET RID OF THE GIRLS!!!!!!

Sign the petition guys!

Sad...AJ's character is fabulous and adds so much to the show. Not that the remaining cast members can't hold their own...but her character can't be replaced. I don't think the spin off show will make it either. Kirsten is nothing without her supporting cast. And what can I say about lessening Paget's role...I think she is a very underrated actress...she has been amazing and to see less of her will be a huge upset to the balance of characters. I guess we are already seeing the last legs of the show. I give it another season or 2 and it's done.

CBS has guaranteed I will not watch the spin-off if they don't bring back both Cook and Brewster full time back to the show. Not only have they sabatoged the future of the new show but they have put the original in jeopardy- the odds of me watching CM without the female characters is very slim and as much as I love the show and love the guys this is an outrage! Don't fix it if it's not broke- they are destroying the dynamic of the show by pulling apart the cast. The CBS executives should be ashamed of their money grubbing selves!

McKenzie Warren said...

I found out about this and I was absolutely livid! Is CBS trying to lose viewers with this decision? Paget and AJ are important to the show, bringing heart and strength that is always needed. I look up to them as examples of women who can have careers in a male-dominated field, be exceptional at it, and still have a normal life and even a family at the same time. This is the ultimate betrayal from CBS and I will refuse to support the spinoff because of what they've done to AJ and Paget. I will be protesting about this as much as I possibly can because without these two women, the show will suffer and I DO NOT want that.

Shame on you CBS.

Claire said...

These characters help me, as a lady, feel unafraid to be a professional in a male-dominated environment, and hopeful that television writers are gaining a respect for female characters as whole people.

I am angry that people want to take that away.

If CBS is doing this to cut costs, why don't they pay Charlie Sheen less money. That's were the $$ is going.

This is the worst move possible for this show. This cast is MAGIC. It's PERFECT. Don't ruin a great thing! It's so rare to have a cast with this chemistry that works this well and they're going to throw it out the window.

Horrible move. I'm so disappointed. Way to ruin my favorite show CBS.

If the show weren't in the top ten ratings I would understand needing to make creative changes but it is so it is obviously $$$$$

AJ and Paget are worth whatever $$ they ask for. They are an essential part of Criminal Minds.

For the love of God...clearly, I don't have access to the numbers or the show's budget, but I have to wonder if this decision was even focus-grouped. These two wonderful actresses and their respective characters are an enormous reason the show is as successful as it is. This Canadian connection will seriously re-consider her already limited viewing options if they disappear. How 'bout redirecting some of the budget dedicated to propping up some of the network's less successful shows and keeping this exceptional cast doing what they do best?

Anonymous said...

I always believed that Criminal Minds lived off the great cast and the actors' chemistry with each other. In a field of work where great teamwork is such a crucial factor, everybody on the show contributed to making the viewers believe it and give it a feeling of "realness". I can't believe that CBS is about to cut two of the most important contributors to this success.

Another thing I've always believed is that Criminal Minds is refreshing and different from a lot of the misogynist stuff you see on TV these days. I always admired Criminal Minds for their strong female characters and the fact that women were not always portrayed as the victim or objectified. I am deeply disappointed that CBS is going to destroy this.

I really hope CBS will rethink their decision. I'm not sure whether I'll continue bother watching.

Anonymous said...

I think this is the worst decision CBS has ever made. They have already cancelled some amazing shows, but letting AJ go and reducing the episodes Paget is in is the worst idea anyone at CBS could have in my humble opinion. Not only does this show entertain millions, it also shows women in a strong role. AJ and Paget have done a great job, and they do not deserve this after all of their hard work. I pray that there is a solution that will make all of the Criminal Minds fans happy.

Bethan said...

This had better be some kind of weird joke/publicity stunt.
If they get rid of AJ and Paget, then they're cutting an essential part of criminal minds.
I won't watch if these two talented actress leave the show.

Here's an idea CBS, if you're trying to save money, why not scrap the stupid, unnecesscary spin-off?

Tanzania said...

If they wanted to strengthen the female leads on this show - and lord knows they need to do that - then they could have put the creative energy into doing just that with the very capable actresses they ALREADY HAVE/HAD.

I'm incredibly pissed by this decision.

Kerry said...

I can't believe they're trying to do this, what on earth made them think this was a good idea????

I've signed the petition and I'd love to do more, but I have to admit if they start dismanteling the team I'm not sure I could watch anymore.

AJ, Paget your both amazing and the show wouldn't be the same without you.

KatGrace said...

I'm actually outraged that CBS think it's okay to get rid of AJ and reduce Paget's part. It's disgusting. I love criminal minds way too much.

The show will never be the same without them. I have all the seasons on DVD and watch it on tv whenever possible, but with AJ gone and Paget barely there, as much as I love the rest of the cast, I don't think I'll be able to watch it anymore.

I hope CBS realise what a stupid mistake they are making and correct it before it's too late.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the majority of these comments, let go of that HORRIBLE spin off. I love Forest Whitaker, but to say that episode was the worst of the season (sorry original CM) would be an understatement. AJ Cook and Paget Brewster are part of one of the most fantastic ensemble casts on television. What I don't understand is how they can justify getting rid of one of their female characters, chopping down another and then ADDING a whole new character? Bullshit...if they had any sense whatsoever, they would reverse their decision and work out some kind of deal with AJ and Paget. I feel this could be their jump the shark moment, which is horribly sad to say the least.

Anonymous said...

CBS messed with CSI's ensemble chemistry & no offense to Larry Fishburn, he's a great actor but they have not brought his strengths to the show and the ratings/viewership suffered.CM has NOT utilized the great Joe Mantegna's talents or charisma to enhance their show either.
Criminal Minds has a large female following because AJ, Paget & Kirsten show women as strong, independant, vital and something other than victims or targets of degradation. The ensemble cast work together like a well oiled machine.Their interpersonal relationships are key to each and every storyline. The reason TV shows come into your home each week is to have you emotionally invest in these characters and follow their storylines.
Wake up CBS..'IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FREAKING FIX IT".
We love AJ and Paget and DON'T want anyone else. Our Crimal Minds does not need new blood, refreshing or revamping. LEAVE IT ALONE!

Just one more example of removing positive female role models for young people. Telling the world that the women are disposable assets, the world will carry on by the might of men! Hockey bucks! Women add balance and reality to the show. I would ask, "what are they thinking?" but then that would make an assumption that they have a brain. These cuts show that there is no brain.

Idiocy, sheer idiocy. Once again, the Barney Business men in their conference rooms have shown how out of touch they are with their audience. Women watch CM for WAY more than the eye candy, for God's sake! We identify with Emily and JJ, they are us, you know?

Do the suits even KNOW what their show is about? It's not the crime of the week and the pretty boys - it's about 7 people working together on the tough stuff - as equals, respecting each other.

Hell, let them cut the money that goes to guest stars - there are tons of terrific non-stars that would be amazing in roles on this show. Don't freakin' cut our ladies!

I always loved watching CBS; they've got so many great shows, but, to think they could do something like this, it just makes me sick. It shocks me truly that they would fire one person and cut another person's hours just to "shake things up creatively"; they wanna shake things up creatively on the show? ADD people to the cast, don't SUBTRACT them.

Point blank: without AJ and Paget's roles as full as they were when they first came on, I can't see "Criminal Minds" lasting too much longer. Bad move, CBS...very bad move.

I'm shocked, disgusted and hurt. Emily and JJ are two of my favourite characters on this show, and to cut two strong, intelligent female leads to finance a spin-off (even if the launch episode was good and I was looking forward to it) is deplorable. AJ Cook and Paget Brewster seem like wonderful, integal parts of the cast and it's a shame to see them discarded for the sake of getting a big name star for a new project.

Bad move, CBS, and it's going to do you no favours in the ratings for either shows.

Well, thanks for giving me 5 years of a great drama cast & crew, where male and female characters were completely equal and not fawning over each other with lust in the typical fake TV reality.

It's a shame.

Sadly I would bet this decision is so they can pay Forrest Whitaker (sp?) his requested fee. I have no doubt this had to do with the spin off, which SUCKED in my opinion. I wasn't planning to watch the spin off in the first place, and now I'm really not. If it were truly "creative" the decision would have been made before the end of the 5th season, not a month before the spin-off is to start shooting. Money. That is the reason.

Infuriating.

Don't let them leave! Also, SCREW THE SPIN OFF SERIES!

CBS and anyone from Criminal Minds involved with cutting out AJ and diminishing Paget's role on this show are heartless idiots. AJ is the reason me and my family watch this show. Paget coming on board in the second season sealed the deal for us to continue watching this show for so long. The entire cast with these two amazing actors keeps us returning every week. No AJ Cook and her character JJ; very little Paget/Prentiss means we will no longer tune in to this show. We love the entire cast but cannot stomach watching this show without AJ and Paget. It's the whole team or not at all. AJ and Paget good luck in your future endevours. We look forward to seeing you on any tv show or in any movie smart enough to have you.

Incredibly stupid idea.
The team cast is solid, and the show would not be complete without JJ and Prentiss.

So, here's a little note to the execs, pin this on your walls on a bright yellow sticky note:

Thou shalt not mess with a perfectly great TV series or its thousands of now highly annoyed fans

(who by the way decide how much money you get to spend in the first place so you'd better listen to all of us!)

Kym C. said...

this is a complete shock! there are also rumours that because JJ will no longer be there, they are looking for ANOTHER CHARACTER! what kind of tom foolery is this? either way they'll need a character to, you know, give the team a job, brief them and help control the media which is a HUGE part of not only the show but also part of the REAL WORK which the show is based on.
and then emily, who came in after elle and even paget said "they didn't need a new character" and now, she's apart of the team! us fans love her as if she's been here since the beginning.
so why cbs, this is one our only hit shows. no one, not the cast or crew or millions of fans across the globe want to see our ladies go because this is not a show about males, this is a show about a team.
cut the spinoff, seeing as no fan wants it watch it in the first place and also because it seems like another silly csi which has already been done several times.
save our ladies! save our team!

I boycotted & dealt with Nina Tassler when CBS canceled "Jericho" & I'll do it again. AJ & Paget & the characters they play are two strong, independent, beautiful & smart women who are role models to anyone who watches them. Cutting AJ & reducing Pagets screen time is a clear slap in the face to not only fans, but all women who watch Criminal Minds.

I've been a CM fan since the beginning & I keep tuning in because of THE TEAM. THE TEAM has been such a focal point with many characters saying without 1, there is no team, so what does CBS do? They treat the fans like we're stupid; like all of a sudden we're supposed to believe & swallow that the men are the most important part of "the team". This is an opportunity for the viewer to flex our muscles and for once we should follow through and not just grumble then sit down and watch. Hit them where it hurts- in the ratings. They will know it is a backlash for firing Cook and reducing Brewster's airtime. They are counting on us venting for a couple of days then resigning ourselves to their decisions because they see us as mindless.

Goldfishie said...

I will never forgive CBS if they let AJ go, and screw Paget. They are the only reason I feel I can relate to ANY characters on the show, and that is an ESSENTIAL thing for getting viewers!

I LOVE Garcia so much, she is my fave, but no one can expect her to be able to carry the job of being the ONE stable representative of women left on the show. I also heard they are adding a new female cast member to FILL THE VOID once AJ leaves. There would be NO NEED to FILL A VOID if CBS wasn't creating one in the first place.

And I'm truly sorry to the new cast, but if there isn't enough money to go around for the ORIGINAL, then they shouldn't be spending any on a SPINOFF. it would be fine with me to go ahead with that show, ONCE CBS FEELS STABLE ENOUGH TO SUPPORT BOTH SHOWS.

I am actually VERY worried that CBS WILL listen to us, and instead of AJ and Paget, they might cut a male cast member - I DO NOT WANT THAT EITHER. I adore all of them. I think the best choice right now is to put off releasing the new show until it is possible to have a full cast for BOTH.

Effie said...

Dear CBS,
Grow a pair. That being said, I don't mean for you to create an all male cast. In order to grow the aforementioned pair, you must LEAVE THE WOMEN ALONE. AJ, Paget, and Kirsten are very strong and independent women, and they serve as a role model for the younger generation of women out there. They create a persona that makes girls want to be like them.
If you cut AJ out and take away Paget's role, then you are committing an act of sexism. In this world, there is enough of that - you as one of America's leading broadcast station should consider that fact. Maybe, just maybe, that is what differentiates you from the other stations. NBC, for example, made Heroes Hayden Panettiere much like a sex symbol. All she did was whine, fight, and look pretty. Paget and AJ have substance.
So, CBS, please consider this very much. And, please, grow a pair.

P.S- The spin off sucks. The originals are always better, because they are the original.

Andrea said...

Seriously pissed off at CBS right now.

The reason CM works so well is because the cast has insane chemistry together. They work off one another so well and are a family. Taking two of those family members away is going to ruin the show.

And what message is CBS sending to women everywhere?? That men are the only ones who can really do a job like the BAU does?? Well guess what, women are the majority. You should be catering to them instead of alienating them.

And a third point: CM has been incredibly lucky so far to have bounced back from losing two of their main cast members, when that typically spells doom for a show. At least both of those times, the actors wanted to go. CM is not going to strike gold a third time especially since we know AJ and Paget want to stay on the show.

Sadly enough, I think this next season is going to be CM's last.

No way! while I'm a No 1 Thomas Gibson fan, this is awful - the whole team dynamic needs these two great actresses. You cannot be serious that the spin off series means you need to drop AJ and Paget. The new team is nothing compared to this one. Go and check it out. Makes you wonder if the powers that be even watch the programme.

This is absolute garbage. I love AJ and Paget to peices. And, as much as I love love love love love this show, if they go ahead with their desicions I will no longer watch. Simple as that.

I am floored by the recent "update" from CBS regarding the rationale behind this horrible decision to eliminate the majority of the female cast from the show (including the ONLY female profiler). Does the network really expect us to believe that the decision was "creative"? If it was truly a creative decision, then it's the network being creative and not the Criminal Minds writers and producers.

The season finale was all about Morgan's character (and since it was "to be continued" we can safely assume that next season's premiere is also about him). If the writers & producers made the decision to write JJ's character out of the next season completely, wouldn't they have alluded to this in the season finale? How will they be able to write her out in episode 1 of next season (part 2 of the finale from this year) if she was barely in the season finale and definitely wasn't its focus? This smells strongly of a rash network decision and not one creatively planned by the producers.

To my fellow fans: don't take your anger out on those who have created such a wonderful show for us for the past 5 seasons. Challenge the network for real answers - I suspect that they're trying to take us for fools.

All my life, my mother told me I could grow up to be anything I wanted to be, "if I just worked for it". I'm from the generation of women who grew up in our mother's footsteps - the mothers who FOUGHT to get into the boardrooms and the uniforms and had to FIGHT to stay there and get any respect.

I STILL have to fight daily to get the same respect in my position as my male counterparts - because the assumption that a female can't possibly succeed in a technical field still abounds on an *overwhelming* level.

Television and the media fought to show strong female characters - women who could do the same job, be every bit as smart, opinionated, and capable as men. And it was great!

Now, I see this disturbing trend towards marginalizing women again. Time and again - books, movies, TV. Instead of being the heroines, we're back to playing the victim, time after time. In the real world, we're facing prejudices in the workplace and on the street. Maybe it's nostalgia for a time in my life when I didn't notice this inequity, but it seems worse this time around than it was 20-25 years ago. I had someone say to my FACE the other day that women didn't deserve the same pay as men for the same job because they were too "unreliable" - it costs too much to train them because they leave as soon as they get married and start "popping out babies" and take too many days off for our "monthlies". Now, granted, I've worked with some women like that, but I highly resent my entire gender being painted with the same brush.

I love Criminal Minds. The show hooked me - and what hooked me was the interaction between the characters. Plain and simple. It works. Now someone wants to mess with it - and the fact that it's two strong female characters (which is 2/3's of their female leads) getting axed - it's VERY difficult NOT to see this as yet another attempt to cast a female aside for doing a "man's job". If it's about money, which I suspect it is, how about the network execs take a 1% paycut? I think the Writer's Strike and the outright LIES the networks spewed about the lack of funds ("there's no money/growth in new media" PLEASE, TELL ME ANOTHER ONE! Dr. Horrible won an EMMY for crying out loud!)

Yes, shows *have* to adapt. Characters change, storylines change, etc. but this feels too sudden, too deliberate, too personally aimed at the lovely and talented women involved, to be strictly business or strictly artistic, and the fact that every. single. person. on the cast is upset over this tells *me* that this decision is completely out of left field?

Boo Hiss CBS... Excuse me while I change the channel. After, of course, I take note of all your sponsors.

Nobody wants this to happen, not the cast, not the fans, no one! This is the best show on television! Why would you want to ruin it? None of the characters can be axed, TOGETHER they make the show!

Victoria said...

CBS, this is absolutely uncalled for. Cutting these two amazing actresses would ruin the show. Women today like being able to be compared to men, working in their fields, and you cutting these two women would break that. We like being represented as more than just victims.
I love Criminal Minds but if you decide to cut Cook and Brewster, you've lost me as a fan. I won't watch Criminal Minds and I will most definitely NOT watch the spin-off of this show. Leave it like it is.
As Paget Brewster put it in a tweet:
"'Creative Reasons' has been an Executive Bulls**t excuse for DECADES. It IS financial. AJ is a dreamboat. And yes, I am hurt, too. "

Elle said...

I totally can NOT believe it! AJ and Paget are both wonderful and talented actresses and I couldn't imagine the show without them!

Why break up the amazing cast that is the original just so they can have a spinoff? Definitely won't watch the spinoff and will stop watching the original as well.

Since SVU will be going up against CM in the fall if these cuts go through the choice will be easily made for me!

True the men are important and i like my male cast on CM but AJ and Paget are MORE important to me as strong female role models and characters! Cutting them is a MISTAKE!

Dear CBS Execs, Criminal Minds Execs, and Co.

I do understand that budgetary cuts are necessary, especially right now. I understand that the ever constant struggle between art and commerce is growing, and I understand that financial gain is the goal of any industry, especially entertainment; which begs the question, why would a network take one of its most popular, most watched, most loved shows and start chopping off the core cast that makes up this otherwise brutal show?

Criminal Minds isn’t an easy show to watch. It’s intense and gory, and sometimes just downright disgusting. You don’t think we watch just for that, do you? No, we don’t… well some might, but I personally do not. I watch because of what Criminal Minds stands for. I watch because I see a group of people that have come together with a common goal and who work together to bring that about. I watch because of the dynamics of that group and watch how each one of them contributes to the group just by being there.

AJ/JJ and Paget/Emily bring something to their cast/team that no one else can bring. They do this because it’s who they are as individuals. If anything taught us that, it would be AJ/JJ’s maternity leave. No offense to Meta Golding, but neither the show nor the BAU functioned properly with her in place of AJ/JJ.

Paget/Emily wasn’t there from the beginning, but she was luckily, she didn’t have to step into a well established show, (as it was mid-season 2), and in the end, I feel she fit in much better than Lola/Elle ever did. Paget and Emily bring compassion, passion, and sometimes much-needed humor to the show. Making her on-air time less would be a monumental mistake.

I urge you to rethink the steps you are taking to safe the company money because I believe that with the absence of AJ/JJ and Paget/Emily that there will be a large absence of thew viewing audience. And, after all, when the rating are up, the affiliates are happy, and when the affiliates are happy, the network makes money.

Why would you take that risk?

Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

A Underwood

This is all so wrong. How can you treat loyal fans that have been with this cast for years ? We are still not over Patinkin leaving. These girls are awesome on the show, and I love Prentiss especially. Forget the spinoff, its not even good. CBS please figure out its your WHOLE cast that is making the show! No one is replaceable.

Caroline Francis said...

Criminal Minds is one of the only primetime dramas on a major network that shows professional, highly intelligent women doing demanding, dangerous jobs without falling apart. The show doesn't focus on their roles as women, it just shows us that it doesn't matter: they do their jobs just as well as the men. It isn't an issue. The fact that CBS is taking away these two strong female characters is a disgrace. Not only are they getting rid of two talented actresses, but they are sending a message that they don't believe that a show can stay fresh with the same cast of strong characters. The fan base has already shown them that they love the current cast and that their loyalty remains with them, not to the show itself. Without this cast, there is no Criminal Minds.

Jen said...

And how do you justify Charlie Sheen??

The thing that makes CM so much better that the spin-off is the family dynamic that these multiple characters create. The caring uncle, the older brother who takes care of raising his siblings, the tough sister, the hot jock brother, the sweet sister, the brainy little brother, and the lovable innocent neighbor who is always there to help the family function. Break this up and you have just another bunch of guys in law enforcement. Yeah! Like we don't have enough of those shows already! That's why I find the spin-off boring. Done over and over and over again.

Unknown said...

This whole decision has completely blown my mind. I have been trying to take a few hours to think it through; rationalize WHY they might be doing this, but I can't. How can you give a SPIN OFF of the show the green light, and then go and cut 30% of the cast on the main show???

Most CM fans were hesitant about the spin-off in the first place; how many fans do you think will be tuning in now??? Given the choice, I think 99% of fans would abandon the spin-off in favour of keeping our cast together.

Budget cuts SUCK, believe me, I understand. But why weren't other options examined? Cut back on some of the big-name guest stars. Shoot a few less episodes per season. I think the financial backlash of cutting AJ and Paget is going to be FAR greater than their paycheques for the season.

I could go on and on about the solid interrelationships between ALL cast members (both on- and off-screen), but these sentiments have been echoed many times by other commenters. This type of cast chemistry is SO rare - CBS is making a huge mistake by destroying it.

And of course, the fact that they are cutting two of the strongest female role models on television that actually AREN'T portrayed as sex symbols (though both are hella gorgeous) -- wow, way to send a message there, CBS! And congratulations on alienating your female viewers! First, you support Charlie Sheen after he assaults his wife; and now you do this? You are going down a very rocky road, and I am going to laugh at the negative publicity that results.

And finally, something I haven't seen commented about a lot. Kudos to the rest of the CM actors (especially Joe and Kirsten) for speaking out against the decision and providing fans with links to this blog, the online petition, etc. I truly appreciate you expressing your disgust at this decision, because you are putting your careers on the line as well. This just goes to further the point about the strength of the cast relationships, and it makes my heart ache even more that this decision is being made.

I know that the boycott of CM is also going to affect the remaining actors (Thomas, Matthew, Kirsten, Joe and Shemar), and I really hate that this is going to affect THEIR careers as well. Know that the fans support ALL of you, and will fight to keep you all together.

Garcia, Hotch, JJ, Morgan, Prentiss, Reid, and Rossi are often referred to as "the team" both on and off the show. The claim that the show is "male-centered" is completely absurd- even the most casual observer can see that Criminal Minds is an ensemble cast.

I was drawn in by how the BAU provides some "non-traditional" images of law enforcement professionals. Profiling is not just about tackling suspects (which Morgan does quite well), being a hardass (Hotch) or the experienced mentor (Rossi). There is also intelligence (Reid of course), compassion (JJ), a strong sense of justice (Prentiss), and even a little snarky humor (Garcia). This makes "the team" both relatable and dear to countless viewers.

The cast of Criminal Minds that includes AJ Cook and Paget Brewster is one of the finest on current television. All seven regulars have an off-screen chemistry that is apparent in their characters' teamwork. The idea that you could cast off AJ and Paget so callously is intolerable to the fans who have made Criminal Minds one of your most successful programs.

It baffles me as to why CBS would move to diminish (or eliminate) the role of these two strong females on Criminal Minds. Law enforcement may be a male-dominated field, but there are still women who serve just as bravely. Do they not deserve representation? Is it so awful to have women in dramatic roles that are not mooning over their superiors/colleagues incessantly (I'm looking at you Grey's Anatomy)?

I think fans of Criminal Minds understand that the time will come when one or more of the cast decide to move on. However, we will not stand for actors that have worked hard over the years to produce a successful show being pushed out for the sake of saving a buck. Some people have threatened to stop watching Criminal Minds if CBS follows through with its plans. I do not think that is fair to the rest of cast and crew who were not a part of the decision, but I can guarantee I will not be watching the (completely unnecessary) spin-off or any other new programming. I viewed the spin-off as a sign of CBS' support for Criminal Minds, it's (entire) cast, and crew. This percetion was obviously incorrect. Even if this whole situation is truly about the bottom line, I am confident that scrapping the spin-off would be a far wiser decision than axing two actresses that have proven their mettle.

So they're firing/"downsizing" already beloved CM castmembers only to hire a different female actress mid-season. This is absolute crap! Whoever made the genius decision to fire AJ and reduce Paget's role should be fired themselves. Most of CM's fanbase may be female, but if the powers that be think that means we'll be fine with this decision just because our "eye candy" is still on the show, they've got another thing coming! We finally have strong, kickass female characters who are able to hold their own on a show depicting a very male-centered profession, and we're supposed to be okay with CBS cutting them?! Someone up in that network is delusional, and those who aren't had better fix this screw-up quickly. If this decision stands it *WILL* be the beginning of a very rapidly-approaching end for Criminal Minds.

Anonymous said...

AJ and Paget whatever tv show you go to or movies you make in the future I will tune in or buy tickets to see. Thankyou for your portrayal of strong independant women. CBS and the producers of Criminal Minds are the biggest souless idiots in the world for doing this to you. Good luck to both of you as well as the rest of the cast. I will not watch another episode of this show without you both in the cast full time. No more purchasing the shows DVDs. In fact no more CBS for me.

Also, whichever exec decided to cut AJ and Paget? I vote FIRE THEM. Then, use the money to bring back AJ and Paget. With all the big bonuses the execs get paid, you'll probably have enough leftover to give all the cast & writers a salary increase too.

I wouldn't be nearly as upset if while dropping AJ and reducing Paget they're bringing on a DIFFERENT female lead? That makes completely NO sense if it's for "financial reasons". Get rid of one to have to turn around and pay someone else?

Claire said...

If they true CM fans will start watching the spinoff if this is what they are doing to get it they are sadly mistaken. They have to keep strong female characters on the show to represent the fact that women aren't just the victims. AJ and Paget will be greatly missed and should be kept on the cast!

Anonymous said...

I won't be watching if it's without Paget and AJ. As much as I love the male cast, the ensemble is what makes the show what it is. I, for one, HATED Jordan Todd and spent the entire time wishing AJ/JJ were back already! This is the stupidest thing CBS has ever done for this show. JJ and Prentiss are integral parts of the cast dynamic, and cutting them while bringing in a new 'hotter' and more cost-effective female is just ludicrous. It's offensive.

J. Ward said...

I am shocked and dismayed at the decision that CBS has made. I have no idea where their collective heads are. The two characters played by Paget and A.J. are integral to the whole of the show. They are the glue that binds the CM family and without them it will crumble. This opinion takes nothing at all away from the other characters who are wonderful. These actors are great alone but they are even greater together. They work off of one another like a well oiled machine. CBS is making a very grave mistake by splitting up it's CM family. I hate to think of the show failing but it is a group effort and when the group is destroyed it will fall. I like the actors who will comprise the cast in the proposed spin off but if it comes at the cost of CM, I'm not interested in watching it at all. The moron who came up with this plan should be sent for a psych evaluation because he/she sure does not have all synapses firing. People give your heads a shake.

After that fabulous 100th episode celebration and the conclusion of such a successful 5th season--I'm just disgusted. I'm also really annoyed by the male cast members and Edward Allen Bernero. Where are their voices? "Mystified"? "Disappointed"? Total strangers are screaming, I mean actually losing it and, though I'm sure it's not the case, it just seems like they are all like, "Glad the chopping block missed my head. Have a nice life little blonde girl." I think that perception (hopefully, misperception) is what is actually driving me away from the show. Because I certainly didn't expect any loyalty from CBS. AJ and Paget--please keep tweeting about your future endeavors. Your fans WILL follow you on to bigger and better things.

I am truly saddened that CBS has decided to eliminate/cut two out of three of their women characters. I also find the reason to be absolutely ridiculous since the "creative directon" of both JJ and Prentiss tie right into the rest of the casts storylines. It seems to me that Criminal Minds is more worried about financial matters than what their fans want, which I feel is a huge mistake. Also, if CBS does decide to hire on another woman character during the next season I think the show will have a hard time getting fans to warm up to this character. This whole decision does not seem to make sense.

camielmom said...

I am very unhappy at this recent development. Paget and A.J. are wonderful actresses and bring a tremendous dynamic to a wonderful show. To eliminate A.J.'s character altogether and reduce Paget's appearance on the program seems like the last attempt of a drowning man. This is one of CBS' most popular shows; how can this be a necessity in order to reduce costs? It makes no sense at all and dismisses in its entirety the will of the fans. If people were flooding the executives with requests to remove these two? Okay, then. But given the outcry since this became news, I find that incredibly implausible. I hope the powers that be will reconsider and do the right thing by both these two fabulous women and fans like me who adore the show...the way it is.

i am soooo disappointed to learn that CBS are thinking of axing the role of JJ and reducing the episode number for Prentiss - ive emailed the CBS forum and vented personally. It will not be the same show without 2 of the main characters - theres so many different aspects that those roles bring to the show and theres so much more the writers could do with the characters. the cast gel together like few other series' and work well as part of a team. we all know its not real, however it is realistic and they play the parts really well. it might all be about money - but if they can afford to hire a new actress to appear then surely there must be some way to keep them both on.

I don't understand. It seems they want to kill the show ? The team is working so well all together. Each character has his place and that's what makes it different than the other series. AJ and Paget, you have all my support.

Amy Smith said...

How disappointing! With such fresh episodes this spring and a team dynamic that is conveyed so well, CBS should correct this mistake now. Fans invest in characters, not a studio format that says it's time to shake things up to try to get better ratings. Removing a character won't put you first in the ratings; compelling storytelling and a strong fan base will.

Unknown said...

I think its appauling that a show that portrays such integrity and honour, can think of axing 2 of the main characters - especially when they bring so much to the show.
All 7 of the team gel so well together, as well if not better than any other show including CSI etc. They work well and each bring individuality to the show and their own role. The show needs to have the right balance, which is what it has right now. to get rid of 2 such strong characters who have so much potential as far as story lines go is just ludicrous.
If this is all down to finance which is usually the way, then why hire a new actress to replace JJ and Prentiss in some episodes. why not negotiate with both AJ and Paget instead of getting some random who we have never heard of and will not appreciate in??

I have emailed CBS forum and expressed my displeasure, in also offered up the fans to help if it was a case of the writers getting writers block!

i'll not boycott the show - but it just will not work as well without the whole cast of 7 as it is - ratings will drop and people will complain!

My support and friendship goes out to Paget and AJ - this must be horrendous for them especially.

This is just a shame. I can understand wanting to save money. I can understand wanting to "freshen up" the show. But I can't understand making this kind of decision. Save money by doing less location shots. Save money by paying guest stars less. And freshen up the show by actually writing strong episodes and writing for the potentially strang characters that you have. They have wasted AJ Cook, Paget Brewster, and they are wasting Joe Mantegna, who is a powerhouse of an actor. You have given their characters very little to do and have relegated Prentiss and Jarreau to back burner status. The thought that by trimming back on the women in the cast they will be playing to their desired demographic is short sighted and yes, a bit stupid. Why not give the viewers they have, the fans of the show, the storylines that will keep them hooked and in turn, the viewers will open up the world of "Criminal Minds" to their friends. I know I have personally gotten several people people to watch the show and they have become rabid fans. Don't toss us aside in favor of males 18-49. That is just plain dumb.

Liz said...

The decision to get rid of two of the female leads is ridiculous. Sure the guys are great, but the women add a wonderful dynamic and an important aspect to the show. Without them, it will go downhill quickly. The show works so well because of the balance that the ladies bring. I highly doubt I'll continue to be a loyal viewer with these cuts.

Amaia said...

I'm really angry about the decission made by the CBS. For me Emily is one of the best characters in the series and Paget has shown once and again she's a brilliant actress (she's one of the best on TV nowadays). She doesn't deserve this and all because of what? Money?? C'mon!!!!

And A.J. deserves a better treat as well, JJ is not a great character but isn't bad either and AJ does a very good job portraying her.

Leave "Criminal Minds" as it is, we don't want a new actress, we want both Paget and AJ.

Addressed to whomever this may concern.

I am a fan of your show, Criminal Minds, and am writing this letter to register my complaint about the cast changes involving AJ Cook (Jennifer Jareau) and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss).

As you may know, since the story broke yesterday there have been over 10,000 signatures on an online petition stating that the fans want to keep AJ and Paget on the show. This has also been signed by other members of the Criminal Minds cast.

Taking into account the number of signatures on the petition, the fan/cast tweets and the general support that the fans of Criminal Minds have from supporters of other shows. This is the next step in our campaign to keep our characters on our show.

As far as the fans are concerned, your reasons do not seem to be valid, given that the show is more popular than ever.

What the exexs are doing to the Criminal Minds cast is downright insulting. How could anyone in their right mind think that axing AJ Cook, reducing Paget Brewster's role, & then introducng a new female character is a "creative" idea??? Criminal Minds is such a success because of each and every cast member, their character, & how each character contributes to the team. If you think the characters & contributions of Jennifer Jareau and Emily Preniss won't missed, you are sorely mistaken. Do you even WATCH the shows you continue to butcher?? Like many, I have been a faithful watcher of Criminal Minds since its debut in 2005. I also watch several other shows on CBS. If this change to Criminal Minds comes to fruition, I will take my viewership elsewhere. Being enetertained is not worth supporting the sexist views of CBS.

I will not watch if they get rid of AJ & Paget. As a woman, I must say that while the male "scenery" is nice, the stories will have no dynamic if it is an all male cast. The viewing audience is primarily female, and I am sure we all agree that we appreciate having these two show how strong & smart women can be. Get rid of AJ & Paget, and you can kiss a LARGE chunk of your audience goodbye...especially my entire family!

I always tell people that they should watch Criminal Minds because of the 3 awesome, very different female leads. I guess CBS doesn't need me or any of my friends watching.

Don't get me wrong - I love Garcia, and I like the male characters well enough, but without JJ and Emily, the show goes from "must watch" to something I might catch in a re-run, or while waiting for something else to air. I've also heard the rumor that they're bringing a new female character in to replace JJ and Emily - if that's the case, $10 says its some "hottie" angled as a love interest for Morgan.

CBS was already known as the homophobic network, so I guess now they'll be the misogynistic network as well. If they end up going with a few scattered Prentiss episodes next season, I'll be watching those online through unofficial channels to make sure that CBS doesn't make a single cent off me.

I can't believe the blatant sexism coming from CBS. If AJ and Paget are cut, I'm not sure if I can continue to support the show. There has to be some other way to "save money" or whatever. By reading some other comments, I don't know what woman would continue to support a show that has gotten rid of their strong female presence. Garcia isn't shown nearly as much any more either. I've noticed JJ doesn't get much airtime and it seems like Prentiss is fading to the back too. I haven't watched all of this past season yet but I'm not very happy with most of the ones I've watched. It seems like after the 100th episode things started to slowly go downhill. I can only imagine how much of a drop will happen if AJ Cook is cut completely and Paget Brewster is reduced to only a certain number of episodes. I really hope CBS does the right thing here.

This is such a very bad decision from CBS, and a sad news for me.

Criminal Minds is one of the best shows since years, and that is thanks to the wonderful cast, so of course AJ Cook and Paget Brewster who are amazing actresses with a lot of talent.

I really hope CBS will change is mind and that AJ and Paget will be present in all episodes of next seasons of Criminal Minds.

If not, no offense to the boys and Kirsten, but CM won't be the same and I really don't think I would watch CM again.

Like Paget said, it's definetly a financial matter. If so, why not cancel CM spinoff and/or do less episode like 18 for season 6 ?

CBS decision really doesn't make any sense. It just would if CBS want to kill Criminal Minds. But maybe it's the goal ?

A few hours ago, I posted a message with the link to the petition to have AJ and Paget back on CM on my french website NCIS-fr dedicated to NCIS. Hope it will help a little. Not have time to make a Criminal Minds - Esprits Criminels in french - website since its "younger" than NCIS, but anyway I'm a HUGE fan of CM and the CM's ladies.

In France, Criminal Minds is one of the best popular TV Show, and it has more fans every year.

I can't believe CBS wants to do this! There are so many other ways to save money but NOT by cutting off AJ and Paget! This is crazy. Criminal Minds is about the whole cast. CBS is seriously mad for even thinking of doing this!

This is ridiculous and shocking!! To be honest, I wasn't that interested in watching the spin-off in the first place. Now I can say for sure that I will NOT be watching a single episode!

I would rather have the CM cast as is that we all know and love dearly than some spin-off. As a female die hard fan, I will be seriously considering continuing on with the show if you cut some of the strongest female cast members. This is definitely some poor decision making on CBS' part.

OK, I think I get CBS's rationale here. The vast majority of Criminal Minds viewers are female, right? Therefore, the execs probably think that they can cut AJ & Paget, & we'll still watch for MGG's baby face & Shemar's abs. Who needs to see strong female characters when you have eye candy, right?

CBS I didn't want to do it but you make me: I am drawing the sexism card. Oh yeah! This decisiĂ³n is oh so sexist that I think we should tell about this to aaaaaall the Criminal Minds sponsors and assure them that we arĂ© going to boycott their products id they continĂºe to endorse such a sexist show, so CBS is money what do you want? Thats where we arĂ© going to punch you jf you don't revert this ilogical decision and of you want to sabe money: don't launch a spinoff!

I'm done watching CM if this is how it is going to be.

Okay, let's make some maths:

They cut JJ and Emily won't be in every episode. How much money can they save this way? 100.000 Dollars/episode?

Charlie Sheen on TAHM holds a glass of whisky for 30 seconds for 100.000 Dollars.

Ridiculous reasons for forcing the series into cancel, and the cast members do know this as well, that is why are they pissed off so much. And they are right!
This step of CBS betrays the audience, the fans, the cast&crew and everybody who believes that doing something well and precisely is enough to have a job.

Who will follow AJ on the show? A starter girl, who is cheaper? She may be talented (whoever it will be) but many will say: oh, I know, she is the one who is cheaper than AJ Cook.

I don't want to watch CM without Emily and JJ! And I don't want this spin-off! CBS, cut off the spin-off and save money!

I've tried emailing CBS but it keeps bouncing back. I've decided to post my letter here:

To Whom it May concern,

As a woman who has watched Criminal Minds since the very first episode, I must say it both saddens and angers me to hear about the decision to fire actress A.J. Cook and lessen the role of Paget Brewster. I have heard a rumour that a new actress will be brought in, but this seems too little too late. I have loved and identified with the character of JJ, and she often acts as the heart of the team. Her loss will be a significant one. As for the character of Emily Prentiss, it is all to rare to see a woman who is strong, independant, and intelligent on television. Cutting her role also makes little to no sense.

Quite frankly the entire debacle reeks of outright sexism. The network needs to look long and hard at what it has done. In a year where it is clear that budget cuts had to be made, they are shelling out money for a spin off that the fans do not want, and sending a massively ludicrous raise to a man who has admitted to beating his wife. While on a show that consistently is in the top ten, they are cutting two strong female characters in a cast that already was dominated by men. This does not look good for CBS. I know that if this actually does go through, you will lose so many viewers. See for yourself what people are saying.

Kindly rethink these actions.

AJ has been an essential part of the cast since the beginning and Paget has become part of that family. It makes no sense (financially or creatively) to suddenly cut out two main characters.

When Mandy Patinkin left the show, Ed Bernero talked about how cast changes can have drastic repercussions on a show's success. While the show did survive his departure, part of it was because he left voluntarily; but the show did see a drop in viewers.

Suddenly taking out two actresses who still want to be there is a slap in the face to the cast as well as the fans. Not only does it come off as sexist (the message being that women are less important), but it just doesn't make sense. The show is working. It still has high ratings and it doesn't need to be fixed.

Bringing in a replacement female character makes even less sense. Forcing out the other two and shoving in another will ensure that the fans will hate and reject the replacement.
This sort of thing makes fans lose faith in a show and the network as a whole.

The only sensible reason I can see for this change is to deliberately destroy the show to have an excuse to cancel it.

Cutting out AJ and Paget would be a disaster for the show. Just talking about it has already upset the fans and the cast. Making the rest of the cast unhappy is another problem. The cast/team are very much a family and the majority of the viewers enjoy that dynamic. Breaking up that family will only lead to negative feelings from both the cast and the fans.

If they actually go forward with this change then they are either complete idiots or they think the fans are idiots. Either way, I will want no part of CBS and will boycott.

If on the horrible chance these changes DO go through...CBS better think about the poor actress they get to (ugh) replace AJ Cook. The fans WON'T take kindly to her, & I'm sure the rest of the cast will harbor some animosity. These changes AREN'T the fault of the new actress, but no one will accept her. She won't have the same chemistry w/ the team as AJ. No one will care about her character. It would just be a bad, bad move. Why don't CBS execs understand this???

Everyone loves J.J. too much. The Criminal Minds cast has such good chemistry together. I understand financial difficulties and that drastic measures are sometimes needed. But I have to ask-- is there anything else that can be done instead of dropping a cast member? Especially with some of us still hope for a J.J./Reid romance.

The show will not be the same to me without AJ and with less of Paget. One thing that I love about Criminal Minds is that it has strong, motivated, female characters. I have no doubt that without them I will be losing interest quickly. CBS is making a huge mistake cutting much-loved characters on a highly rated show and I hope really hope the backlash from the fans makes them realize that.
