The spin-off episode sucked lemons and they are obviously in need of money for the spin and getting it by replacing A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster with someone cheap. I hope the people who were involved in making these decisions lose their jobs and can't find new ones.

Worth giving it again... flood the station and their voicemails if they refuse to speak to you!

Poster on another site shared this phone number for CBS

212 975 3247

said they actually spoke to a person. I'm about to call.

If they don't take emails and petitions seriously maybe angry phone calls will work.

Pete said...

We don't WANT another actress mid-season! What we WANT are our current cast to remain... ALL of them! Why can't you understand such a simple request?!!!

Take your spin off and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

trisha said...

We need to mobilize and all call and send emails. We need to call upon fans of other shows on CBS to help us like we all helped each other during the WGA strike. I will pass the phone number to the NCIS community. I am active on their message boards. We need AJ and Paget to be on the show.

oliverandom said...

NO. JUST NO. we love our show just the way it is, thank you very much.

Sadden and angered that its come to this. CBS has an amazing cast, with these strong, female characters we all love--and you want to get rid of that. Fans deserve better, and so do Paget and AJ.

Anonymous said...

My mom and I only started watching CM because of AJ Cook. She is from our hometown and this made us want to see her as a star. If they don't bring her back, as much as I love CM, we won't be watching.

Anonymous said...

I am in shock too! I am really hoping this isn't true. I love this show- it's my favorite- and I've been watching it since the very very beginning. I love the cast and think they have amazing chemistry. the female leads are so important to the chemistry and balance of the show. AJ is my favorite and if they really cut her, I doubt I'll keep watching. It's offensive to cut AJ or Paget yet keep going with this spinoff. it's wrong to the character, actress and the fans.

Amber said...

I just don't understand why they want to do this. I mean, JJ and Prentiss are a HUGE part of the show. Neither of them are my favorite character, but still. They're irreplaceable.

A said...

I love Garcia, but as a character she is at the beck and call of everyone else. She doesn't balance out the predominately male cast. JJ and Prentiss do, so I will NOT continue watching the series if AJ is cut or any female character is minimized any more than has already been done by Criminal Minds.

Good job showing what the priorities are, TV. I've been happy to watch CM for the strong leading ladies, but I'm not going to continue watching without them, not even for the adorable Matthew Gray Gubler.

I'm so happy the fans are taking a stand!

Anonymous said...

The entire team, as it is, has a wonderful on-screen presence. I love that as much as the great story lines, incredible acting & just plain awesomeness of CM. Why mess with something that is working so well? We fans love ALL the characters on CM! Don't cut AJ & Paget's roles out or down, CBS. You'll ruin the great thing you've created.

Can't believe this, what an awful news !
Criminal Minds is one of my favorite TV Show, and I particularly love the character of Emily Prentiss. Paget Brewster showed over the pasts seasons she's a wonderful actress, whith a lot of talent. In fact, she's my favorite actress out there since years, she's so talented. And her character in CM is so important, I can't believe it's possible she won't be coming back next season (worst scenario) or she will be back but for less screen time.

What's wrong with CBS seriously ! And the creative people of CM if it's their decision ! I'm really pissed of they screw up such a great show like CM !!

I'm really sad too that they decide to cut off AJ's character, JJ si so great ! But if Emily is not on CM next year, it would definetly be over, I dont think I will watch CM again.

If it's for financial reason, I'm sure that the spinoff (bad intro episode by the way) is responsible, I definetly won't watch it unless Paget/Emily is in it. Certainly, they prefer to pay much to have an actor like Forrest Whitaker, than to be sure to continue to make a great show like CM by keaping the characters we love so much (Emily an JJ).

Come on CBS, cancel CM spinoff and let JJ and Emily stay on Criminal Minds !

A French Fan who hope Paget will be in every CM episode next seasons (yes, with an "s") and for the same screening time as pasts CM seasons.

Finola said...

Now I am reading on line that a new female character will be introduced. Why? CBS should stick with the cast they have. IF IT ISN'T BROKEN DON'T FIX IT. CBS should leave the best TV show on tv alone. Spend less money on the spin off. God only knows how much they will have to pay Forrest Whitaker. Big Star=Big Bucks.

Bina said...

I really don't get why AJ has to go and Paget's screen time will be cut back. Both have done such a great job and fit in so perfectly. Why get a new person on board? There's plenty variety with the unsubs the show focuses on, the victim's story and the local cops featured in each episode.
First the crap with letting TG go last year, now this? What is wrong with you guys? This is a great show. It's doing well in the ratings. Why mess with it?

Anonymous said...

This will TOTALLY RUIN the show!!! WTF are they thinking!!! I will NOT watch it any more and I certainly will not watch the spin off!!!!!! We need to get that lady from Texas' phone number who called and ripped her local news station a new one cuz they interupted the season finale because of a tornado watch!!! LOL but seriously come on CBS DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!

Anonymous said...

This is just the worse thing CBS has ever done. They must keep BOTH Paget Brewster & AJ Cook and both should still be full-time. If there wasn't any emily nor any jj there would be no heart in this show. The fans LOVES these ladies very much, they both have a wide fan base through themselves and their characters on this show.

For me Emily has always been my favourite next to Hotch and Reid. Paget did an amazing job after Lola left. Better in my opinion. i wasn't too fond of Elle and if they take Emily away AND jj the team could never be the same.

And im not sure if this is sexist or not but what else are we supposed to think when they are f'ing with the 2 female cast members?

Bottom line, keep BOTH ladies in FULL-time, with no NEW cast member ever!! and if its nessesary to get rid of one of them then is should Rossi. i like him but he isn't as vital as everyone else.

Please CBS, just listen to the fans including myself. It won't only work to OUR benefits but to you too. Keep the show as it is or you'll have no show.

Anonymous said...

Criminal Minds will not be the same without AJ and Paget!
AJ, Paget, Kirsten, Matt, Shemar, Joe and Thomas are the show! We don't need a new female cast member! Please cut the spin off and save our team!!!

I'm not going to watch some new girl in place of women I already know I love. Way to screw it up, guys.

How can you create a spinoff with mostly male leads (sans one, apparently) and then cut one (practically two) women from the original? And for financial reasons, no less? Seriously, adjusting your budget around Charlie Sheen's salary increase is not the way to successfully program a network.

I think this is a big mistake. Especially when announcements of this decision include statements that Criminal Minds is a more male-centric series - that could not be further from the truth. You have two great women that bring so much more to the show than male leads (with the exception of Matthew Gray Gubler). There is a HUGE difference between the fans thinking that this series is male-centric and the network pushing male characters to the forefront of a series in order to make it that way.

Don't get me wrong, I love A.J. Cook, but Paget Brewster is the heart of the show for me. There's just so much material that they can cover with her and I wish they would capitalize on that. Such a huge disappointment regarding a show with such a loyal fanbase. And I'm not even going to touch on the fact that the whole move is extremely sexist. It makes me sick.

Just left a message for CBS (no one answered) and the machine cut me off after 3 1/2 minutes! Hahaha :D

Well, clearly and articulately expressing my displeasure takes time! I will be calling back...

yael said...

Terrible, terrible decision. CBS is undermining the integrity and quality of their show by reducing (or straight up removing) the female roles.

Criminal Minds works mostly because of the quality of the ensemble cast dynamic, males and females included. It doesn't need any "refreshing," and if there are budget issues, there are more ways to solve it than cutting 2/3 of your female roles. Such a decision is blatant in its sexism. If I wanted to watch another male-driven, testosterone-filled procedural, there are plenty to be seen on television. Criminal Minds has, thus far, been home to a unique and very successful formula. Why try to fix what isn't broken?

blr1962 said...

Saddened and disappointed and, yeah, kinda angry to hear the news about Ms. Cook and Ms. Brewster. While it's true we all have our favorite CM actors/characters, the team dynamic is what is so incredible about this cast. I cannot believe CBS wants to dismantle our team. Don't do it. DON'T DO IT.

Briony said...

this totally sucks!!!
If they take these 2 of the show or one with very little of the other then the ratings views will drop drastically. Don't do it CBS!! i really hope they're ALL of these comments.

Gdaddyscat said...

I sincerely hope this is just an internet hoax and not a true event. It would do the show much harm to lose such amazing actresses, and to see those story lines reduced or ended. I hope if this is true, CBS will reconsider their actions before it is too late. I have been a fan of this show for many years, and may continue to watch but it just won't be the same with the ladies. They give the episodes balance and a perspective that an all male (with the exception of Garcia) just can't deliver.

Tracey said...

I also am very upset with CBS. I was angry last night when the reasons for the cast 'trim' were financial. Now that they are 'creative' I am truly disappointed. Did we not see that Jordan couldn't handle JJ's job for the duration of her maternity leave? There is no reason to replace the 'human' factor of the show. And Prentiss keeping Morgan and Rossi and even Hotch in check is part of the show I like most. Grrrrrrr

Bex said...

I am seriously hoping it's a load of tripe, the girls are fantastic.

I feel they have very important roles, especially in the episode I watched the other night where Prentiss took a beating and a half. That episode really showed me what a team player she is.

Will keep my eye on this one.

kaady said...

I honestly don't get why they made this decision. Whats the point in 'getting rid' of AJ and then replacing her with another female character? Can anyone see the sense in that? If it's because CBS haven't the money, then cut the spin-off, we actually never really wanted one in the first place. We would always prefer the original team & series & the actors & actresses that play them. Really annoyed at this decision. It completely sucks! Why fire someone & decrease anothers episodes? these two actresses are essential to the show and without them it will be wrong. It will be really hard to continue watching the show, and I'm not sure if I could still watch it.

CBS, YOU SUCK!!!!

Fra said...

i'm shocked and disgusted!
criminal minds won't be the same without JJ! Obviously they remove the female characters to save money!!!
Disgusting!!!!

Lori said...

I absolutely HATE this! Prentiss and JJ are in my top 3 favorite characters. We have 3 intriguing, strong female characters on the show as it is - is that so threatening to TPTB?

I don't think CM and CBS will be part of my must see TV in the future if they go ahead with this nonsense.

Unknown said...

Today I learned about the departure of AJ and Paget. I was very sad, they give a touch more in the series. Criminal Minds is my favorite series, the cast is wonderful. Not that anyone deserves to be cut, even for lack of budget. That would not be a reflection of the spin-off, after doing one could not miss the money to the main series? With all my heart, if they come out will be a great loss. Think fondly. Does not move where you are winning, please.

melissa said...

Prentiss is the best character on the show...they can't just cut her airing time like that...this is a big mistake!!!!!!

Anyone know what is on tv opposite of CM because that is what I will be watching if AJ and Paget don't get new contracts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes no sense to loose these two! they both are part of the dynamics of the team on the show... how ridiculous

Jasmine* said...

I can't believe my eyes when i read they are cutting off TWO of our main actors !!!
I mean do they understand what that means ??

I LOOOOOVE CM with all my heard and obviously i am a huge fan.
I would be as mad if any of the other members were gonna get cut off..but two ladies ???? are u freaking kidding me ??

I was so happy that we were not gonna have any drama this season...wow i was very wrong !!!

If the reason is that spin-off i seriously won't even watch one second of it !!! cutting the main cast to make some spin-off is effin sad. I'm so mad i can't put it in words. Very disappointing..

I hope you understand that the people who are leaving comments here are die hard fans of CM, and i have never cared about any other TV show this much in my entire life.

Why do i love CM? it's much more than the theme or what it's about..what makes us tune in every week is the dynamic of the group. The fact that the group is not consisted of only men or women.

There is an amazing balance going on. And we love them...how can u do this to us :(
All i can say is that i love AJ and Paget and they are inspiring women and actresses. I am almost in tears writing this.

Kimmie said...

I am so disappointed in both CBS and the show. Criminal Minds has three of the strongest, brightest, most well-rounded female characters on television, and they want to cut the legs out from underneath two of them? This show works because of the team it's built, and the balance between the men and women is perfect. Why would you mess with a good thing?!

I really don't care if they plan to replace A.J. or not - the fact is, she shouldn't have been cut, and Paget should not be forced to take a reduced role in the show. "Creative choices" or "financial reasons" be damned - they're both terrific actresses and strong female characters (which are in very short supply on T.V.).

The decision to cut back the women was just plain wrong. CM can count on one less viewer next season.

Kay said...

Absolutely in shock. HOW could they do this? Don't they know anything about us fanatics? They can't, the JUST CAN'T!

I think this is ridiculous JJ and Prentiss are great characters and I love both of them. And now supposedly they are going to bring in another female cast member midseason, if that's true why not leave AJ in. We all already love her.

This totally blows chunks. I only started watching the show because Mandy and A.J. were on it and now they both will be gone. Blows.

cseldin said...

I can't believe they are letting A.J. go, let alone replacing her with another actress... A less expensive actress! It's so disgusting... I feel sick!
This is sexist and so disrespectful!

I hate CBS! I hate the producers of CM for letting this happen and not fighting for their cast. It's like a back stab. So sad...

I'll stop watching this show just like I stopped watching CSI.
"Criminal Minds" has been through enough changes... I'm done!
Sick, sick, sick!

A.J. and Paget, you'll be missed!

Criminal Minds is an amazing show, starring some of the best & most amazing people that could ever star in it! AJ Cook has been on the show since the begining, & removing her would be like removing Thomas Gibson or any of the others! & Paget Brewster is an amazing kick ass profiler! She might not has been there every single season, but its like she has! She completes the family dinamic that CBS has made this team have! Paget's & Joe's characters have a connection from demonology & AJ's & Matthew's characters have a connection from the first season to now!! You cant disappoint the viewers, or destory the show!!!!!! This show has changed my life, & has touched 100s of thousands of people!!! If you were a Numb3rs fan, the last 2 years only the actors playing Don and Charlie were on every episode. Everyone else "missed" episodes. The Larry character was written out for most of the last season with guest stars filling in for him. The last season was then shortened and then finally canceled. This is what it seems like they are doing to Criminal Minds. It's like CBS is trying to screw up criminal minds so that they have a reason just cancel it.

The reason criminal minds works is because of the interaction between the characters. Why make changes if it is working. There are characters I don't like. I'm not a fan of Rossi, but his character adds dimensions to the other characters. AJ and Paget need to stay full-time members if this is where they want to be. If they are not allowed to come back full-time, I don't think they owe the network anything to aid in ending their story lines. But being the class acts that they are, they will probable finish their story lines and fade out of the picture.

CBS is so full of fail

Kelly said...

Why would someone do this? You never cut the strong female characters. Not to mention the fact that AJ & Paget are AMAZING acteresses!!!

If you have financial problems, cut the spin- off instead of acteresses! The fans don't care if the spin - off gets cut, but they do if their favorite characters get cut!

If CBS goes through with this. I can speak for alot of fans if I say that I will stop watching!

Look around on the web! Tons of fans don't want this! It would we the most DUMB decesion!

If this is for a creative stunt as the latest update says and not for financial reasons then that just makes me even more pissed off. Obviously people in charge, we the fans DO NOT NEED any changes made we r happy with the way things r. Especially if the plan is to add a new female to take AJ place mid season, that's just a slap in the face people. AJ and Paget r two of the best actresses out there and u CBS should be ashamed of yourself for putting them down this way. I just really am disgusted and hurt over all this why mess up a good thing. Why fix something that's not broken. It just doesn't make sense. My final note, if u AJ or u Paget read any of these comments I hope u both will know just how amazing u r and just how dedicated your fans r to u both.

As a viewer of the show from the day it first aired, who makes it a point to watch new episodes on the nights they air, who purchases the DVD sets, and who will even occasionally view the shows in syndication on A&E/ION, I feel that I should be representative of the type of fan CBS would value and strive NOT to lose. CM is the only network (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX)show that I watch, and it is purely for the strength of the ensemble cast – particularly strong women not only surviving but being successful in a male dominated field.

The news that the female part of the cast was being cut was quite a shock to me. In retrospect, the women in this season appear to struggle with doubt and weakness – to be fair the entire team does, but subsequently and blatantly getting rid of only the women is what screams discrimination and earns the sexist tag, especially when the explanation is centered around money. It is a poor explanation, which is not only insulting to the female actors but also to the viewing audience. It also makes me wonder if CBS and Mr. Bernero truly understand the demographics of the CM fans like me. Do they really feel that I would stick around just because the guys are there? Do they really feel that AJ Cook and Paget Brewster don’t add anything to the series? I guess time will tell if this is the true direction the show is leaning towards, or a poorly managed tactic used by CBS to try to gain the upper hand in negotiating female actor contracts on CM (does CBS really want to be perceived as the network which discriminates against women?). But I do know that if the show becomes centered around a group of men, with Garcia as technical backup and the only female character – the team will lose the well rounded and balanced feel which attracted me to the show in the first place. And it will lose me. Because clearly, I (young, highly educated, high earner not rich yet individual) am not the type of fan Mr. Bernero or CBS wants. Too bad they won’t ever read this and know.

Jenny said...

Typical cbs studio tatics when trying to kill of a show. They did this with The Unit a couple of years back. Killed of a favourite character and then added 2 really lame new characters for 'creative reasons' which upset the core fans of the show and come the end of season 4 it got cancelled. Paget and AJ are both integral to the show and I think the creative & finace excuses are just smokescreens for some ill advised studio meddling.

Anonymous said...

They NEED these two characters to balance the show. This is such crap - if they want to "freshen up" a veteran series, write better stories with the established characters we love.

Andrea said...

CBS,

First, I'm dissapointed and sad. And now I'm depressed.

Second, if this is happening to pay Charlie Sheen more money so that he come back, you're too stubborn. You have to understand that he doesn't want to be in Two & a Half-Men anymore.

Third, I'm sure the spin-off is the guilty one here. And I just have one thing to say: screw the spin-off! We didn't asked for one. Instead of paying Whitaker use that money to keep AJ and Paget. I was going to give the spin-off a chance but with this, forget it.
Criminal Minds is doing perfectly on it's own. Don't cut two of my favorite female actresses out. It will completely ruin the show. And the other woman you hired, we don't care about her, fire her.

I'm a 14-year-old and I'm depressed. Thank you very much CBS for your great mistake. I hope you fix it.

Silke said...

this is just weird. without AJ and Paget I'll probably won't be watching the show anymore. and with me many others i think.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this, we stay through tick and thin with your show, stuck by your side when you cried because Mandy stabbed you in your backs and ran and now you are FIRING AJ Cook and pushing Paget into a corner, forcing her to probably make herself cheaper and if not, blame her for not wanting to stay with the show and if that is not enough, you are telling us in the same day that you are bring A NEW FEMALE character?

SERIOUSLY????

Good luck, CM. With the writers being reduced, and this last season you just shown us, you are going to need it.

Max said...

Nothing that hasn't been said by everyone else but these decisions are ridiculous! Personally, I wasn't going to watch the spin off even before this happened because to be honest the backdoor pilot was boring and utterly failed to grab my attention.

I can't believe they would cut two outstanding actresses from a successful drama for cost purposes. It's a stupid solution and one that will make me stop watching too. At the end of the day, if ratings are bad, this isn't going to be enough to save the show.

Anonymous said...

So we traded two ubber talented actresses for Forest Whitaker?

Well isn't that the stupidest thing you could ever imagine.

Then they have the nerve to say they are trying to just freshen up the show and they expect that to make everything better.

They can take the spin off show and CM if Paget and AJ aren't on it and stick them both were the sun doesn't shine.

Can I just say that Emily and JJ are two of the best female role models on television? Smart, determined, self sufficient, brave, and loyal.

Why would anyone reduce the presence of healthy role models in order to have funds for a spin off that is destined for failure?

No CBS!

I thought the devise was "Never change a winning team." AJ and Paget are a part of that team. it would be stupid to cut anyone off.

Rebecca said...

Okay even if the cuts aren't because of budget problems I still can't understand the cut of Paget. I can understand AJ's cut to a point. Her character has a kid, there's going to a replacement for her etc. but Pagets character is going to be written out too? I love her character so much more than Elle! Prentiss was the only girl on the team who was a profiler and now she's going to only be in a few episodes?! To me I do love the boys but a team of only boys? Really? The show is still doing great and they are cutting out JJ so why Prentiss too?!

Anonymous said...

in my opinion, they kill JJ with Henry and Will, and now if they are going to bring a new female, it will be because they want a romantic couple in the show...reid or hotch with the new female.

Carly James said...

I have gotta say whatever reason for firing AJ and cutting down Paget the spin off episode was really poor. The chemistry between the cast was awfull and I couldnt understand half of what forest whittaker was saying oscar winner or not. It would be nice if the shows producers listened to us fans who watch the show and adverts and scrap the spin off if it means keeping two great female actresses front and center on our Tvs. Im cynical enougth to expect CBS to spin this so they dont take any blame but as the we are the ones watching it would be nice to not be taken for idiots all the time.

daphne dangerlove said...

I have to admit, I feel a little betrayed by the news regarding AJ Cook and Paget Brewster.

As a fan, I've invested years in getting to know these characters. I've raved to friends and family about Criminal Minds, about the excellent cast and the fascinating stories they tell. I own all the dvds, and CM is the only show that I watch live every week.

What made me such a fan?

Emily Prentiss/Paget Brewster and JJ Jareau/AJ Cook. I watch week after week to see these two women shine in the most dismal of circumstances. I adore what these two characters bring to the team, I am fascinated by Prentiss's on-going internal conflict, her sense of purpose warring with her own humanity, and by JJ's unbelievably human connection between the victims and the crime. Both of these characters have brought unexpectedly compelling moments into each episode, making Criminal Minds about so much more than just catching the bad guy.

Given the caliber of some of the episodes from this past season, don't tell me that this decision was made for creative reasons, because the talented writers of Criminal Minds, the ones that gave us episodes like 100, don't need new characters to keep things interesting.

Regardless of the reason this decision was made, I ask CBS to consider what kind of message you are sending to your fans, particularly your female fans, when both of the characters affected by this decision are women. To me, you are saying I am disposable. That you can just trade out one actress for another, that you can cut me out of episodes and I won't care.

Well, guess what? I care. I just wish CBS did too.

Unknown said...

Dear CBS,

Regarding the announcement that the decision to fire AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewsters' hours is for creative reasons. I do not believe you. I think it's about money. It may also be an attempt to acquire more ratings by sexing things up a bit. For arguments sake lets say you are telling the truth. It would be much more creative to utilise the talented actresses you already have/had as part of the cast more fully by exploring and developing their characters more. There is so much more scope for both JJ & Prentiss both as women & as FBI agents. If money truly isn't the issue then you can have the new recurring female character too can't you?! It doesn't have to either or. If money is the issue forget the new girl & keep Cook & Brewster. Are you trying to destroy your consistently top ten show? Do you want to lose viewers? If yes continue with your decision. If not listen to us your viewers & change your mind before it's too late. I love Criminal Minds & want it to be a success. The question is do you?

This is the stupidest move ever. This will ruin the show. It will be horrible without JJ and Prentiss in a limited role. Prentiss is the whole reason I watch this show since Mandy left. If Prentiss is gone so am I.

This is TOTAL crap and I can tell you right now I WILL NOT watch the show any longer!!! one of the best things about this show is the chemistry between the cast!!!! The spin off is going to SUCK and now you are DESTROYING the hit show that you have!!!! BRAVO!!! CBS BRAVO!!!!!!

How is cutting 2 out of 3 of the females on the show being creative, CBS your just pissing everyone off and your going to lose viewers.

If they change/reduce/eliminate members of the cast,I won't watch Criminal Minds as simple as that, how could they do that with such a lovely cast!

I new update from CBS saying the decision was "creative" not "financial" worries me even more. It worries me that the backlash from the fans won't matter to them at all. The only thing I can see saving AJ & PW are actions taken by the other actors. What this action would be I have no idea.

This is the worst decision that has ever been made for this show and I'm beyond mad. I love Criminal Minds for the team that leads us through each episode. We don't watch each and every episode for the gory pictures and cruel details but to see a great team dedicated to this job. Both AJ Cook and Paget Brewster are incredibly talented actresses. It's obvious that they love their work and play their characters with lots of passion. The show depends on the entire team and cutting both out of the show - and especially without giving serious thought about giving AJ Cook a proper exit - only to maybe add a new character is plain stupid because it will result in loosing a major part of the viewers. Including me, that's for sure.

If the fanatics prevented you last year from shooting yourself in the leg or cutting the branch from underneath you, you have to try again this year don't you? You will never learn, that's why you will never succeed.

It's about what people want. You can give them the stars, but if all they want is the moon you'll still lose out. These fans don't want high profile guest stars, fancy spin offs or explosive special effects.

We just want the 7 outstanding cast members we love. And we want peace and quiet to enjoy CM. We don't care about your creative spills...we don't want them. We want our CM. We want AJ back and we want Paget on full time next season. That should be pretty simple for you to do. Give people what they want, keep them happy and you'll continue to have viewers. Mess with your fans and you'll see the consequences. And if I were you I'd listen to what fans have to say...after all we keep your show going.

Anonymous said...

As some have suggested, maybe CBS is intentionally trying to kill the show, but I don't understand why.

WHY? It doesn't make any sense. They keep cutting the budget (according to Paget in her interview with Kevin Pollak) and yet the show is performing better in the ratings. What more do they want?

The show has an established fanbase, and there's no guarantee that'll translate to the spinoff, so they can't honestly think CM is replaceable. Are they just that stupid? I don't see the logic. If it's money problems, axe "Suspect Behavior." Getting rid of two popular characters on the original show will not endear fans to the new one.

CBS are you serious ??

How can they cut 2 female leads just like that ? Do they have any idea how much we care about the dynamic of the team ?? I really doubt that !

This is the only Criminal show i watch and the biggest reason is because i love the team and their interactions. For god knows how many years we have learned and gotten used to a lovable cast.

Whatever the reason is i don't care...i can careless about that Spin off !!

Wether it's because of financial reasons or creative reasons, it's still a slap into the fans faces!

I started watching Criminal MInds when Paget joined the cast and i will stop watching it if they start messing with her!

As a female viewer i need a compelling female character to identify with or i won't tune in!

And replacing AJ with some new (and cheaper?) girl? So disgusting!

Criminal Minds - The Boys Club ?

NO THANKS CBS!

NO AJ, NO PAGET - NO ME!

Way to ruin a show that brings in high numbers for years now!

I can't believe that CBS actually thinks that this is a good idea. And what's the point of adding another actress when they already have two great ones? I'm really upset about this because what has made this show work so well is the group as a whole. It's like breaking up a family...

How Dare CBS do this get rid of AJ Cook cut back on Paget Brewster and then bring someone new in. Emily is my favorite character I will not watch an episode that does not have her in it and I will not watch for this new person I won't buy the DVD and i won't down load them on itunes both of which i did this season This is just wrong and I will not support them and i certainly won't be watching their crappy spin off this is just wrong why mess with something that is doing so well they are going to lose my business if they go through with this. I Paget how could you do this to her CBS I have lost all faith in you and will make me reconsider watching your other shows. Please I beg you don't do this.

Unknown said...

Sad! The best part of the show is the different talents of the various characters and how they work together. I’m with the “cut back a few episodes for each character” rather than eliminating AJ and reducing Paget.

I really hope CBC can find some way to cut the budget (if that is the real reason) and keep the whole cast together!

Also, SO not interested in the spin off.

I can't believe CBS would do this to the fans. Not only is getting rid of AJ a mistake, but cutting Paget's screen time, absolutely ludicrous. Paget plays one of the best female characters on ANY CBS show, and she deserves much better than this. I wanted more Prentiss in the future episodes, not less. If this goes through, its not an empty threat to say you've lost this viewer.

LaShawna said...

You know what makes this almost worse for me, aside from the completely asinine casting change? I sort of have the impression the rest of the cast was not informed of this. I haven't seen much of any cast reaction online, but I did see this on Joe Mantenga's twitter: "This is the first I have heard about anything involving the cast. I don't have any answers for you all yet. When I find out more I'll post." This makes me think the cast had to find out from the media like the rest of us, which if it is true, is a complete slap in the face for the actors.

Unknown said...

I learned about this at 5 am this morning. It's been almost 12 hours and I still cannot wrap my head around why on earth CBS is doing this! AJ and Paget are both integral parts to this very well oiled machine that is CM. I can't see the show surviving losing two more regular cast members. They were worried about the survival after Mandy, and then after Lola. I really believe this would be the nail in the coffin. This is beyond sad.

I don't know if AJ or Paget will see this, but just in case... your fans are fighting for you! We love you guys!

This is totally rediculous! AJ and Paget are an ESSENTIAL part of Criminal Minds. Instead of making a useless spin-off show, you should keep AJ and Paget on an already successful show. I definintely will NOT watch the new show if AJ and Paget are cut! Criminal Minds is a CASH COW for CBS and if you want it to continue to do well, you should keep the wonderful ensemble cast you already have. If this nonsense happens, you WILL lose viewers. The people who need to be fired are the executives that are lining their pockets with the money that deserves to go to the cast and crew of a GREAT show! Why mess with a good thing? You people need your head examined!

Both AJ Cook and Paget Brewster are essential to the sucess of Criminal Minds. The show needs both of them! Strong, intelligent women who do more than chase after their male counterparts is rare on TV today. They are FBI agents- not sex kittens- and the show has always shown this. It was refreshing to see. Now CBS wants to get rid of them? Without AJ or Paget, I don't think there will be any reason to continue to watch this show. I am just disgusted beyond words at this stupid decision.

It is so refreshing to have a show with such wonderful strong female roles, and now CBS is proposing to remove one of the main characters and reduce the role of another. This is ridiculous. Criminal Minds was almost a pioneer in strong female roles, but apparently this will not last. Outrageous.

Why cut anybody at all? Why mess with a show that consistently brings in awesome ratings, even against American Idol?? I understand budgets being tight, but if your budget is that tight, why bother with the new spinoff whose backdoor pilot was a complete and utter flop with the fans??!! Helllooooo, McFly.... anybody home McFly???!!! I am extremely disappointed and appalled that the CBS Execs would do this to A.J. and Paget. !!!!!!! I am so mad right now!!! Way to piss off your fans there, CBS. Like many others, I would like to join in yelling IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!! Furthermore, I think it is greedy and disloyal to your employees to treat them with such little respect and loyalty after said employees were the ones responsible for making your stupid money-making show a hit money-making show in the first place. Have some integrity, CBS. Don't you remember what the backlash was like against NBC after they threw Conan under the bus? If you are that hard up on money please just scrap the stupid spin-off, because, even though I like Forest Whitaker, I am sure that he is requiring a pretty penny for his services. To add insult to injury, you are not only getting rid of A.J. but replacing her with another female cast member?? Oh HELLZ NO. Also, now you are saying these decisions were made, not due to financial reasons, but due to creative reasons?? I am calling BULLSH*T. Either your PR reps are trying to protect people from being pissed at the spinoff or you guys are st00pider than we thought. Budget cuts would have been a lot easier (though not easy at all, by any means) to swallow than purposefully just deciding to throw A.J. and Paget to the wayside. So, either you are JERKS for choosing the spinoff over A.J. and Paget, OR you are IDIOTS for getting rid of A.J. and Paget just to "shake things up". Way to go. Two thumbs down. I wish I was an Octopus so that I could give you 8 thumbs down (if Octopi had thumbs).

IMPORTANT NOTE TO THE FANS: Please DO NOT boycott the entire season of the original Criminal Minds. This would put the remaining of our beloved cast and crew out of their jobs. Please do not do this to them. It is not their fault so let's not punish them.

We support A.J. and Paget!! As well as the rest of the cast and crew!!! Don't break up our Criminal Minds family, CBS!!!

Also it's like dropping any character off "F.R.I.E.N.D.S."....unbelievable!

Also the idea they will replace her with someone else makes me nauseous. Why oh why did they have to do such a stupid thing?

At this point I'm gonna pray that they won't do the same thing with Paget.

No.

They opt to treat us fans as idiots without brains and give us a more lame excuse.

And I'm pretty sure the brains behind this ridiculous and moronic move stil have their overpaid jobs.

I have several questions: who has got the money to buy all of those products the advertisers of CBS try to sell with their ads? We may not be the whole lot of CBS viewers, but at the very least every one of us talk/interact with how many people every week? What would happen if we start to recomend the competence brands to our family/friend/acquitances?

Ridiculous and moronic move, CBS, that very well can bite you in your colective arses real soon... oops!,arses I've said, silly me, I was thinking of wallets.

First CBS was said to be making cast changes for financial reasons. Now, the cast changes are said to be a "creative" decision to "refresh a veteran drama series." So, why try and refresh a hit? - a show that is consistently top rated among households and age ranges - a show whose cast has been consistently praised as an ensemble that works perfectly!

It sounds to me like CBS is about to do the old tried and FAILED "The show's been on a while so let's shake things up a bit". And creative changes are usually death sentences. CBS should know this from the cast changes it made to some of its other shows!

First CBS says they're taking away the beloved character of JJ. Then they add that they are replacing her character with another woman in the show. I guess maybe that was released to the press to calm down the fan response about removing most of the women? There was an episode of Criminal Minds where it was mentioned that the BAU was no longer an all boys club - did someone at CBS forget that?

Then CBS also says that they are reducing the character of Prentiss - a strong character and role model for girls and women worldwide - a character who beat the odds of successfully replacing another character on the team - How rare! And what a tribute to the abilities of Ms. Brewster to accomplish this! And how is reducing the character of Prentiss a "creative" decision to "refresh a veteran drama series"? I would be interested to learn how this is not for financial reasons.

All in all, CBS will have their probably unexpected (to them) answer to this, if they do indeed make these changes: They will see the ratings for one of their top-rated shows plummet, and with many viewers no longer willing to watch the spin-off, both the spin-off and the original Criminal Minds shows will go off the air. Some viewers have even mentioned not watching ANY CBS-related show to protest.

Reconsider, CBS! You have a lot to lose if you make these changes, both in a top-rated show being gone forever (and the associated top-dollar commercials that will also be gone) and in the number of viewers who will turn their TVs to other networks!

This is not OK. The show won't be the same without them, and its stupid to cut any of the cast members, even if it is for financial reasons, I'm sure there is something else they could do. I have even heard rumors that its not because of budget cuts after all, but because they wanted a creative refresher. If thats true I may stop watching entirely. CBS has effectively ruined almost all of their shows, and if they cut anyone from the cast they run the risk of doing the same to criminal minds. They are both wonderful actresses, and I will be VERY upset to see either of them leave.

I can't believe this horrible, horrible decision on the part of CBS and the producers of Criminal Minds. It's disgusting cutting these two actresses from the show. Way to ruin one of the more interesting shows on tv, I still haven't decided whether I will tune in next year or not.

BrandiB said...

I’m a Forest Whitaker fan, but honestly, I was under whelmed with the episode of Criminal Minds that was, for lack of a better term, the pilot for the spinoff of CM that’d he’d be staring in and I don’t think I’m the only one. That having been said, I wasn’t totally surprised when I found out that CBS had picked up the series for the fall. Kind of a no-brainer really; spin off of successful show (CBS seems to have the market cornered on this) with a big name star at the helm, but I wasn’t planning on setting my DVR, like I said under whelmed. But when I heard today that that CBS can't afford to keep AJ Cook at all and was having to cut back Paget Brewster’s screen time for financial reasons I was shocked! I’m no financial wizard but common sense will tell you that the expense of an entire series far out balances the salary cost of 2 actresses.

For me, Criminal Minds is required viewing. I watch reruns and have even become addicted to the weekend marathons on A & E. I was the same way with CSI. It wasn’t until the season finale that I realized how many episodes I had missed simply because I just stopped caring. I still watch on occasion mainly because I love the majority of the remaining cast but not enough to bring me to my TV every Thursday without exception. How many Criminal Minds fans will feel the same as I do, or worse yet...walk away all together.

Criminal Minds is entering its 6th season and it’s only getting better and one of the primary reasons is the cast and the great chemistry they have. When you have a cast with 3 strong female actresses/characters (and that is a rare bird missing in network television) and you plan on diminishing the screen time of one and eliminating another, do you know how many viewers you’ll be losing? Here’s another question for you: How many new series will be financed for the upcoming season, and I don’t just mean the CM spinoff? How many of those will be cancelled by mid-season if not earlier?

Anonymous said...

This is insane! CBS, we would rather you CANCEL the spin-off and keep AJ and Paget as regulars on the show! You'll lose many fans and supporters for doing this; it's not Criminal Minds without the whole team!

Don't ruin such an awesome show, PLEASE!

Anonymous said...

I am sorry but this refresh a veteran crime drama crap does not fly with me. There are plenty of veteran crime dramas that have a permanent cast base that pull in great ratings (eg. NCIS, any CSI, and or any Law and Order to name a few). CM is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen I actually count down the days to Wednesday. The show is great because the actors and actresses make it great. Without a good team of characters that work well together there is no show. So now here comes CBS with there lets try a spin off crap and then they are cutting a fabulous actress and cutting down another fabulous actress. Season 5 was by far the best season yet and that is because all of the actors and actresses that are dedicated to this show work well together. AJ is a fantastic actress and probably the only one I have ever seen that can act with her eyes without saying a word. Let's face it she is Hotch's right hand person and one of the select few that can get him to crack a smile. Her character also takes care of the entire team. Paget brings this serious, humorous feel to the show that has such a serious undertones. CBS needs to watch episode 100 and Slave of Duty again to remind themselves of what a talented team this group is. The fans are not going away on this one.

I want to thank the staff at criminal minds fanatic for allowing us to post here. The staff at IKY'dU have diligently worked all day to get the information out to the masses to reverse this madness.

I am so disappointed in CBS executives who thought this was a prudent idea. As far as I'm concerned, it makes you look very arrogantly sexist. Is that the image you are intending on portraying?

Please. PLEASE. Reconsider this move. Your spin-off is going to need all the help it can get, and at this point, I dare to say you've shot yourselves in the foot. I honestly was trying to get the spin-off a chance and do some promoting for you. I can wholeheartedly say that I will not be watching, nor will I be viewing any other scheduled CBS show other than the Criminal Minds1. Many of us will continue to view the original series, mainly to avoid anyone ELSE losing their job.

You need to come clean and give us fans the truthful reasons as to why you fired AJ Cook, reduced Paget Brewster's screen time, and then turned around and hired a part-time actress. Please. I think after the billions of dollars that we have spent to make your franchise so popular, you owe us the respect of an explanation.

I believe today you knocked BP out of the most hated list. I think you need to do something about that.

Thank you,

So, CBS, that's how much you care about the fans? Like: not at all?
I'm still in shock after reading this news this morning, more than 12 hours ago. And I'm so disappointed and furious and honestly I wanna give you names, but I'll try to stay calm.

Firing A.J.Cook? Seriously? Out of creative decisions? Cut the crap, nobody buys it. And cutting back Paget's episode count? Could somebody of you smart a** suits please give us a statement with some honest and INFORMATIVE informations? Otherwise the whole fandom soon will come after you.

You know: fans can save a show, seen with 'Chuck' for example, but fans can also destroy it. Not reversing this outrageous decision will probably end in losing the majority of your viewers - not only for Criminal Minds but also for this unnecessary, overrated and not wanted Spin-Off, which was oddly created despite the whole financial issues!
So I'm telling you: you better start caring about us.

I started to watch this show because it provided me with everything I've looked for in a good series: suspense, intriguing (and often very disturbing!) cases, the psychological aspects of the crimes and a team of "crime fighters" with the best dynamics I've seen for a long time. And after 5 seasons and lately episodes that weren't that high-quality like the early ones, I STILL anticipated every Wednesday just to watch my favorite Team on TV solve the cases and to just interact. It's the TEAM we care about the most these days, all members of it, you can't just rip them apart or replacing them! Missing one only destroys the team as it was and as we loved it.
Writers, Producers: you made Criminal Minds what it is right now, a great crime show with a beloved cast all over the world. It's your fault that we love them so much and that we will fight with everything to keep every single one of them. And as long as A.J.Cook doesn't give a statement in which she says that she wants to leave, that it's her own decision and wasn't just fired, I'll keep on fighting. And if all the fighting doesn't lead to anything then - sorry to the rest of the cast - I'm done and all that's left to say is "Bye bye, Criminal Minds."

No love,
a very angry me

I've seen TV shows shoot themselves in the foot before, but this move to remove AJ and limit Prentiss is the stupidest one I have ever seen. AJ is the best All American Girl on television. She represents the heart, the love of the team. In addition she is savy, smart, and courageous, a beautiful strong young woman - a great role model.

Prentiss brings her cool dark beauty to the team and adds a depth due to her strength of character and her passion for justice.

Now I love Garcia - shoot - I want to be Garcia and I adore Morgan, and I want Reid to be my son-in-law, but without AJ and Prentiss the show will be gutted.

Women such as myself, (I am 60) fought for the right to our own names and our right to use our talents in the workplace as well as at home: CBS is spitting in our eye with this revamp of the show.

why get rid o two of the main caracters just to have someone new come in and have a spin off show and im not alone when i say we would rather have aj and paget full time than a spin off show it is one off the best shows on tv because of the cast and how they work together you will be making a very big mistake if you go a head with it!

I think this is such a huge mistake. Tha cast is amazing and they really shouldn't mess around with it. And there's enough money for Charlie Sheen and the NCIS cast and I don't think that they have a much bigger audience.
And Criminal Minds is selling solid numbers in DVD's in the US and especially Europe. I don't think that the series can 'survive' if they get rid of these two actresses. Paget Brewster is an amazing actress and AJ Cook was in almost every episode and her former substitute was horrendous. -So why would they try it again...?

Anyway, I think it would be a huge mistake to cut the female leads. I would stop watching and especially BUYING the DVD packages.

Well this is officially the final nail in the coffin that has been my love affair with Criminal Minds.

Season 5 was by far the worst season we have had. With the reduction in writers at the start of this season it was evident from the first episode that this season wasn't going to be that great. And my prediction proved correct...each episode was worse than the previous one.

This quote by the writer of the last episode should sum up my dissatisfaction with this show this season

"The mandate given to me by [executive producer] Ed Bernero for the finale was just to make it the scariest one we've ever done, which is an interesting assignment,"

Criminal Minds isn't supposed to be scary...it isn't supposed to make you cringe at the things the unsubs do to their victims. And this "show" just hasn't been doing that this season...its more about the gruesome scary things they do to the victims and 50 minutes later they somehow catch the guy.

Oh well good luck to Criminal Minds to try and keep this show going because they certainly lost one viewer. Not that I planned on watching this show again next season, I had already stopped watching it live this season, but this whole mess just makes my decision that much easier.

I won't be buying the DVD for this season as well.

I can almost understand TBTB getting rid of JJ. They have marginilized the chacter so much. I don't agree, but I can understand. However, I can not imagine why they wish to cut down the role of Prentiss. She is a strong presence in the team. She has great chemistry with all the other team members. They should bring her back full time! Do not add an other actress into the mix. Please don't ruin my favorite show!

The draw is the ensemble cast, the crime is the vehicle to illuminate the ensemble cast. Destroy the ensemble, and you take away the draw.

I know - that's a creative thing, and this is about money. But more episodes in reruns = more money. Cancellation at season 7, no more episodes to rerun.

Maybe that'll help.

CM why would you cut out one gender? It's the interplay between all characters that makes this show anything; cut that out and what have you got? The nerd, the muscle, the way too serious guy, and the veteran - the catalyst between these characters have always been the women - and though I love her, not even Garcia can fill those size shoes.... It may just be the end of CM interest for me.

Once AJ and Paget are gone, I'm done with CM--no more watching it on CBS, no more purchasing dvds, and I'm not going to pick up the new game either- nevermind watching the horrible looking spin-off--no passion, no characters to relate too, poor acting--just none of "that special something" that CM has/had.

Think about boycotting the CBS Wednesdays 9/8c time slot. Hit'em where it hurts like they're hurting us. I don't know why, but the higher-ups don't understand that the fans get EMOTIONALLY attached to the characters. They can't just swap out a female for another female and really believe the fans will be okay with it!? THAT'S SEXIST!!

I luv KV and the guys, but the women made the show for me, without them, it's lost that "special something".

Good Luck AJ and Paget in all that you do. Please keep your fans in the loop of your upcoming projects!! Your fans are with you--we go where you go grrrls!!! Yay!

So I get the whole "wanting to keep it fresh and new" POV but really... getting rid of TWO of the best? Can't they just bring in recurrings for a while? Or bring in more...personal... storylines. Same thing happened with the CSI Franchise. Now look at CSI: Miami: only 3 of the original cast are still there and there are 8 characters. There isn't one member of the Criminal Minds cast that I don't like :( This is a sad day. Rock on AJ and Paget!:D

Anonymous said...

I agree with the masses here, altering AJ and Paget will disrupt the chemistry, and I don't see nearly as many viewers continuing to follow the series. Though I would still try to watch, at least intend to watch, I can't imaging it being the same dynamic as it has been with two of it's star players gone.
Being from Detroit, I hear a lot of things about star players leaving, being traded, retiring, what have you, and hockey in this town has altered. Though still a great team, people wonder how long the Wings will make it season to season, regardless of how good their run was this year, it could have been better, up to snuff compared to season's past. Do you want people to say that about your show? That it's lacking or had a better season last time, and that they don't think they will be watching as much, buying as much or talking about it as much as they used to be? Because that is exactly what will happen.

This is the most ridiculous things I've read. The entire cast is great and there is NO NEED to change or reduce anyone's role. And then to add insult to injury and BRING ON A NEW FEMALE CHARACTER? CBS - are you on crack?

Anonymous said...

I am flabbergasted that you, CBS, have made this repulsive decision to cut down the leading female roles. In the past Criminal Minds had obtained great rating and have acquired an extensive loyal fan base and this decision will ruin it. I will have you know I will not be watching the Spin Off and you can expect an immense decrease in ratings. I sure hope you will rethink this decision.

Nykki said...

I am just learning this and I am shocked. Actually shocked is not even an appropriate term for what I am feeling. There is no reason for a spin-off show in the first place. Why mess up a good thing? AJ and Paget are key to Criminal Minds. No one will watch the spin off if it means cutting these two out, any fool can see that. Reading the tweets from Joe and Thomas is what clued me in and THEY don't even know what's going on and they sound pretty upset about this.

Unknown said...

Why would CBS get rid of only female characters? It's the mix of both that make this show work. Face it, the topic of this show is so grim that you need the balance of both genders interacting and making it less - less focused only on such horrid behavior that if you take the women out all you will have is the nerd, the muscle, the way tooooo serious guy, and the veteran - all guys, interacting as only guys do. Though i love her, Garcia cannot provide all of the emotional mix, amusing reparte and support to all that....

Like so many others, I am in shock. I can't believe that two key characters is a very successful program are being cut. Do the powers that be at CBS live in a cave? Criminal Minds is about a TEAM... and each member of that team is critical to the entire program. JJ and Prentiss are wonderful characters and AJ and Paget portray them with intelligence and heart and humor.

My least favorite episode this season was the one for the stupid spin-off program. Didn't like the new characters and resented the focus on them instead of the team I tune in for each week. I've been a loyal CM fan since the pilot episode aired... I watch the episodes in syndication on ION and A&E... I own all of the seasons so far available on DVD and have the current season pre-ordered.

I can only say that I do not understand why CBS would destroy a wonderful program that has only gotten stronger over the years by eliminating two essential characters for such a petty reason as finances. Cut the damn spin-off and keep the CM team intact!!!!!

There are no words for what CBS has done. I thought the Criminal Minds spin off was going to be the only drastic measure that they took this year, but I suppose I was wrong.

Criminal Minds is my favourite television show of all time, but any network that treats its cast like this is not worth my time.

I can't believe for a show that is constantly criticized for the amount of episodes victimizing women that they would get rid of one strong female character and reduce the role of another. If it is indeed due to creative reasons perhaps they should re-hire a couple of writers that were fired last year to re-ignite the show after a very lackluster season 5.

I am absolutely digusted and appalled by this rumour and I am ferventy hoping it is not true.

I do not want to seee any of the present cast members leave the show . I believe now they have the perfect cast.I really did not miss Mandy Patikin too much because felt his character was cold and elitist. Elle was ok but I felt she lacked layers and was not much of a team player.

Paget Brewster is a wonderful actress and i love her interactions with the rest of the team and enjoy the scenes she is in.

AJ Cook is also valuable. She is almost the female version of Hotch, tough,in control.

I do understand how they can work as a team if they are broken up.

If the powers that be want to save money why don't they rid themselves of some of those high priced guest stars. They are not the reason i watch the show.Better yet why not scrap that ridiculous spin off with the comic book characters straight out of a badly written fan fiction.

I definitely will not watch the spin off and sadly it seems my favourite program on television is going down the tubes as well.

HOW???? How can they do this???? They can't get rid of AJ!!! They can't limit how much we see Paget!!! This team of actors and actresses work so well together! How can they break up something that works so well! CM will never be the same again if they do this!

What we need is a contact list for the sponsors of the show, and for the powers that be at CBS. I'd definitely write them to let them know I'll boycott all products the sponsors sell.

Complaints and protests help, but if you really want to get the producers' attention, hit them in the wallet.

Wake up CBS!!! You don't spend spit to advertise CM, let writers go, and threaten to gut the show. If you don't want us to watch, sell to another network--you suck!! If JJ goes, and Paget is reduced to a bit player, I quit.

This is soo disheartening to hear. And I had a feeling something like this would happen. What else can I say that hasn't already been said? As a female viewer, one of the reasons I love this show is that the women on it are a real and obvious prescence. In a cast of 7, only 3 are women, and two of them are being cut?

Ridiculous.

I also think it's ridiculous that the spin off has the go ahead. That jump-off episode was awful, and I can already tell you that I for one will NOT be watching it.

We told you we hated the spin-off and loved the ensemble of the original show, so you green-light the spin-off and ruin the original.

I cannot support a network who clearly have so little interest in their fans opinions.

I've watched criminal minds since it's inception and it's my favorite show - plus Paget is my favorite actress, if she is cut back for reasons beyond her control I will not watch anymore.
I'm sure there are tons of others that share that sentiment.
Paget and AJ both have a huge following. Good luck with your show when a huge portion of the fan base stops watching. Find other smarter ways of cutting costs besides the actors, duh.

You really need to re-think this decision tv people.

One of the reasons this show has the cult following it does are the strong female characters represented beside the males. With the loss of these two characters, you have a male dominated team and while they are good, they are not complete without their female counterparts.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if my previous comment posted but here it is in a nutshell:

CBS: If you make these casting changes, you will lose loyal fans and viewers like me. Do not fix what isn't broken. As Mrs. Reid, said, "Why mess with perfection?"

And if you kill off the JJ or Prentiss characters, I will mail my DVDs back to the CBS offices (postage due). Don't enough women get killed on this show already?

Analytical Mind said...

Wow - CBS is sending an interesting message to women. And maybe we should be paying attention.

Leaving aside the issue of employment for other actors and people who work on a series, and the money that is made by the series - CBS continues to support Charlie Sheen, a person who has issues with being violent towards women, by making him the highest paid actor on TV. The majority of their shows on prime time are centered around men (NCIS is team Gibbs, Miami is team Horatio, CSI NY is team Mac, Mentalist is all about Patrick Jane, Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother by title are self explanatory, etc...). Now, whether for financial or creative reasons, neither of which is really plausible, the decision is being made to limit female roles on CM. I find it hard to believe that no one at CBS has seen this pattern. And the budget cuts they have made must have negatively impacted the collective level of intelligence at the network exec level. It clearly affected the PR department, which apparently cannot come up with a coherent much less consistent message about why they don't value women as anything other than victims on CM.

If CBS doesn't value female actors as much as their male actors, if they don't believe strong female characters are important in their shows, if they don't feel their lineup of shows should give even the smallest of nods to the notion of diversity by including women, then I need to believe them. Because they have clearly sent this message through their actions.

How many women will be willing to recognize this, and send a message back?

What are you thinking CBS? That by cutting down Paget's time, eliminating AJ Cook, and then insult the viewers by bringing in a new younger female character that we will all be happy and satisfied with that! Do you think that will bring in new viewers? You will find out that the answer is no. This, to me, is blatant ageism and sexism.

The reason I watch the show is for this amazing cast's interactions! All of them! But the truth is without Paget and AJ there full time I'm done with the show and I'm absolutely done with CBS!

I just feel so bad for the remaining cast, they've all seemed to have grown so close friends and seemed to really enjoy working with each other.
Tearing them apart and leaving AJ without a job seems so horrible, especially since she's a mother.
So not only do I hurt for myself, for losing what was once my favorite show I only feel for the incredible cast of CM that are being treated so poorly by the people that live off their talents and commitment.
It's so sad!

I can't even begin to describe the stupidity of the thought of cutting/cutting back of 2 of the female leads. The entire cast makes the show what it is today. CBS has a good thing going with Criminal Minds and now they just decide to mix things up a little bit! WTH is that?!? I can tell them right now that I am barely interested in the spin-off and if they make these cuts/cutbacks final, as much as I love the rest of the cast, I don't know that I will continue to watch the show! Television needs more prominent, successful and smart female leads...not less!!!

I would just like to say that I absolutely LOVE Criminal Minds and I LOVE AJ and Paget, also! If they seriously cut AJ i will be SOOO sad. I watch this show every night, whether it be on CBS, ION, or A&E even if I have seen the episode millions of times.. if they split up the BAU everything will be messed up and the show will not be the same! Didn't Ed Benero talk about having JJ and Will have a wedding on the show? What happened to that idea? (I like that WAY better!) Both Aj and Paget are such good actresses. I have started to watch other films and tv shows they were in such as Huff, The Big Bad Swim, Out Cold, Final Destination 2, and Higher Ground and they are definitly two amazing actresses that do not tp be deserve to be cut from the show. If that happens, the show will lose many viewers and it will be CBSs loss.

I am not thrilled.

Save money by casting regular but talented actors as unsubs. There are plenty out there. They don't have a name yet but do a great job. That will allow you to keep JJ & Emily. Personally I could care less about Tim Curry playing a creepy rapist. I would have been happy with having this role played by a no-name talented actor.
What I already said when you brought Joe Mantegna on board: Why? The team was doing great without JM. He wasn't needed. JM is a great actor and I like his character Rossi but there was no real need bringing him on board. Should have saved the money and spared us the crap with threatening TG's role last year and now getting rid of AJ and reducing Paget's role.
Would you please get your heads out of your asses and make some sound decisions?! Please!!!
This has been a great show. It's been doing well in the ratings. Why are you trying so hard to destroy that?
And ... bring our great writers, especially Andrew Wilder back! They were f****** awesome!
Thanks!

To make a statement that Criminal Minds is only about the guys anyway, and so these "extraneous" women are expendible, is so absurd. i'm shocked. how can they not understand that Criminal Minds is just as much about the team dynamic as it is about the cases? JJ and Prentiss are ESSENTIAL to this show, just as each other the men are. you can't do this to the fans....both characters are beloved and always entertaining. to suggest that either character should be given even 1 minute less airtime is ridiculous..i'm so disappointed in whoever decided this was a good idea. Shame, for not recognizing the love us fans have for this show exactly the way it is, with all the characters in tact.

I cannot believe CBS would do this to a show as popular as this one. Have they never heard of the phrase "If it aint broke, don't fix it"? Cutting two of the lead actresses from the show is not only sexist but down-right foolish!

The girls & the boys fighting together is what makes CM as good as it is. Also its one of the few shows that has strong likable, female leads.

Bad move CBS, I'm sure if you need to cut your costs there are other ways of doing so!!!

sdwally said...

When I first read that AJ Cook had been fired and Paget Brewster’s episodes were being reduced, I was angry and a bit sick to my stomach. I first believed the tale about money woes; but as the day wore on, I found that the money excuse seemed more like a distraction and a lie. If CM was not making money, it would not have spawned the spin-off; and the producers would not be able to pay Forest Whitaker’s salary off the backs of the original cast.

It does appear to me to be more of a producer-driven decision; however, for creative reasons, I’m not so sure. I remember asking after the pilot for the spin-off aired, “Does the BAU employ or hire any ethnic females?” I also remember commenting on the fact that the spinoff had gotten itself a JJ clone, the two characters seemed interchangeable. It seems to me that the producers may be in the market for an ethnic female in the same vein as Ziva from NCIS, or the new lady from NBC’s new drama (Undercover) that features two black actors in the lead. If this is the case, they are setting up any new actress for failure by the way they have mistreated our current favorites, which has undermined and destroyed the trust of the current fan-base.

Instead of hiring a JJ clone, the spinoff had the opportunity to bring in someone unique. However, once they secured the services of Whitaker, the demographics of the other cast members changed. Remember Profit was originally conceived as a black actor. I can’t remember what the lady was original conceived as; however, I do remember she was from Baltimore, which led me to believe she would be black or another ethnicity. I’m suspect when they cast Beau Garrett; the producers were already contemplating getting rid of AJ Cook. I’m sure the producers were asking themselves do we really need two JJs. An ethnic actress would be great; however, she would have been an easy fit for the spinoff.

Prentiss is another story. Prentiss is my second favorite character after Hotch. In fact, I’m a big Hotch/Prentiss shipper, so this is really a low-blow for me. At least I had my fantasy and hope that they would eventually wind up together. Even if there was no romance, I had hoped to see more scenes between the two characters in the upcoming seasons. But as the producers threaten to reduce the role of such a fantastic actress and character, I am beside myself with disappointment and angst that Paget may opt to leave. I hope she stays at least until the producers recognize the error of their ways.

This also may be a creature of our own complaints. We complain from week to week that there wasn’t enough Hotch; or there wasn’t enough Reid. As Erica Messer said when she was asked about a Prentiss/Mick connection (Please NO!), it was already difficult writing for seven cast members. This will give the producers and writers the opportunity to beef up dialogue for the “boys” until they bring on this mysterious new female. I must admit, I’m one of the people who have complained about there not being enough Hotch after 100; but I never thought it would be at the expense of the fantastic ladies on the show.

Wow, CBS has made some shockingly HORRIBLE decisions in the past, but this has to be the worst by far. If CBS goes ahead with this, they will have lost the respect of their viewers and ruined one of the best t.v. shows they ever had. They say it's for creativity, I say lies, the viewers love it just the way it is. Loosing AJ Cook and Paget Brewster will be the most critical error CBS will ever make if they go through with this. I am angry and sad by the so called refreshing of a series, if they really want to do that, they could work on many of their other less popular series.

Knowing that CBS has stated the reason being to "refresh" a cast that doesn't need refreshing...CBS is being disloyal to the cast AND the fans.

This is absurd and appalling. Criminal Minds is one of the few shows that showcases female characters who are strong, intelligent, determined, and genuinely human in a position of power without being stereotypical. These are lovely, talented women who do not deserve to be simply tossed aside for the sake of budgeting a spin-off that will never live up to the original- especially if the rumor about finding a new female character by mid-season is true.
This show is a hit for a reason. Why mess with it? I,for one, would truly hate to boycott my absolute favorite television show, but after such a ludicrous move on CBS's part I may well have to.

To say I am disappointed would be a major understatement. The episodes and stories will be increasingly dark without the ladies. JJ and Emily bring a lot of light to the show.

This is a horrible idea. CBS is a huge company and they choose to lessen the biggest hit show they have. Apparently, they are making too much money, they have lost all the sense they have. CM is my favorite show and one reason is because of these two ladies. Why in the world would they cut them and then add another actress later? CBS wants to save money, cut the spin-off!

Anonymous said...

What a total mess. And this smacks to me of we want to introduce romance and play up the soap opera elements. Criminal Minds is not and should never be the FBI version of Grey's Anatomy.

One of the things I enjoy most about the show is that there are no romantic relationships between the characters. I have loved that the show can show men and women being close friends and co-workers and not have them make googly eyes at each other.

And finally, the last time they tested out a female to potential pair up with one of the male leads romantically (Jordan) it didn't work.

I have a bad feeling that CBS wants CM to make room for potential female from that horrible spinoff that they have planned.

I am still in disbelief and very angry too that CBS would want to eliminate the role of JJ and cut episodes for Prentiss.
CBS should be thanking their lucky stars for such an amazing cast with great chemistry on the set and who also get along off the set as well. No back stabbing, salary disputes......but instead CBS is making one of the biggest mistakes in TV history which will undoubtedly cause tension and sadness on the set next season, as well as having many unhappy, disgruntled fans.

JJ's role is vital to the story of the BAU. I can't even imagine her not being there to present the case and to deal with the families of the victims. She is the sweet, level headed compassionate person and I also love that her & Spence are such good friends.
Prentiss is a strong, intelligent and skilled woman who can hold her own against the guys. I cannot imagine her not being at the crime scenes to fight it out. She portrays a great woman's role.
And to add salt to the wound, another female character will be added? What possible sense does that make? We don't want new characters. We love all the ones that are part of the cast now. Without JJ & Prentiss in every episode the show will not be the same.
If the reason is budget, then scrap the spin-off. I doubt I will watch it ayways since normally I don't watch such violent shows but the entire cast draws me to CM.
If you want something fresh....if it's not broken don't try to fix it. It's worked great so far. Spruce up the writing. Go back to more interaction between the main characters and their stories. Add more Reid (sorry had to throw that in too)

Please reconsider this horrible decision and realize someone was not thinking this through. We need JJ & Prentiss!
Thank you!
