CRIMINAL MINDS: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HARVEY KEITEL?

Criminal Minds: How does everyone feel about Harvey Keitel joining Criminal Minds? I have no information but the rumors are spreading. Keep in mind they may just be rumors!

***** SINCE I RECEIVED MR. BERNERO'S LATEST FAN UPDATE, WHICH IS NOW POSTED ON THE BLOG, I AM CLOSING THIS THREAD.

Excellent choice!

jenn said...

No No No. I just can't imagine that. He always plays characters with an abrasive hardness to them. They need someone a little less edgy. I don't see him fitting in the group.

Which is why I think, he will fit perfectly in the show.

Anonymous said...

No. He's not a logical choice, personally I don't believe he could fit in with the show well enough. But I could be wrong, so don't quote me or anything.

We'll all just have to wait and see.

GuBlerLoVerR494 said...

He's a talented guy and certainly has an impressive film and TV resume, but for Criminal Minds? He just isn't right. I actually think it'd be a better angle for the team if they let in an intern or two. What do you guys think?

Anonymous said...

I honestly think he is a good choice. Not everyone is going to agree with this. But as they say, different strokes for different folks.

I think he will fit in greatly. He also has devoted fans.

If they do bring him in, we all will have to accept it. And see how the producers work him in.

He ALSO has done some comedy, so that's a plus.

slashgirl said...

My first reaction was what? But as I thought about, I actually think he'd fit in quiet well. He's got an edge and intensity to him that I think will go well with the cast.

If they do end up hiring Harvey Keitel, then I will certainly be giving him a chance...

Anonymous said...

Okay, I looked him up. He 68 years old. I have a question then. How old is to old for the BAU?

Because I think he a very good actor and can play someone tough, but he kinda old.

Anonymous said...

Brash with a bit of a Napoleon complex in his U.S. movie roles.

If he can show empathy equally as well, then he might be acceptable.

If the other actors are comfortable and pleased with the choice, whatever it is, then it should work. I would hope that testing with the other actors is a part of the selection process.

Anonymous said...

At this point it might just be a relief to know for sure who it is.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to need more info on him before I decide what I think. What do we know about him?

Unknown said...

No, no, no, no. Please no.

Anonymous said...

I am actually hoping that it is true. He is a versatile actor with a lot of great experience. He plays dark characters very well. Sounds like a good choice to me. I hope it is true!

Anonymous said...

I think it is a great choice. I hope it ends up being true. He'll fit in.

He was in Pulp Fiction, Copland, Resevoire Dogs, Sister Act, Monkey Trouble.

He's an Oscar winner.

He hosted SNL one time. The list goes on.

Thus, a perfect fit.

I am sure, there are actual people at the BAU who are his age, and VERY VERY fit.

So age, TO ME does not matter.

Anonymous said...

First of all as Jill said it is just a rumor at this point so everyone needs to keep their panties on.

I have seen him a few times and he is a good actor. I would not have picked him but I didn't want anyone so I had no real options in mind.

I think if they signed him that they did so with a lot of careful thought and we need to respect that and give him a chance.

Whatever is good for the show is good for us. If it is true then it means they think it is good for the show. CBS is all about making money. They aren't going to sign someone who doesn't have a real great chance of making it a better show.

Anonymous said...

Well said Steven!

Anonymous said...

His age doesn't bother me. The fit with the other actors is my only concern.

I kinda sorta remember seeing him in a few things.

Let us know when you find out for sure. It would be nice to have the casting decided and over with.

Anonymous said...

I hate the wait. I wish we knew for sure already.

I definately voted against getting someone new this season but the rumors have been running all over the internet about so many really aweful choices.

I could live with this one.

Anonymous said...

He's a good actor but absolutely not the right choice.
I don't understand why they want a big name, that would mess with the core of the show.

Anonymous said...

I need to see him with the cast before I am going to know if he fits in. It is going to be so weird to have a new character to embrace.

Anonymous said...

I think people complain to much.

There are many actors who don't seem they "fit" in a television role, HOWEVER, they make it work and it becomes a good show.

In other words: If it's true: deal with it.

Anonymous said...

Here is an original idea. Lets have less anonymous comments. It is easier to respond to a name. Make one up or use the city you live in. It would help us all to have a more civilized conversation.

Anonymous said...

He is an extremely accomplished actor. Sure he is older, but he has quite a presence about him...at least he has in every roll I have seen him in. How do I think he'll fit in with the BAU? Don't know, but if they bring him in, they've got some good reasons for doing so. I'd support it.

Anonymous said...

I live under a rock, so I don't know who he is.

However, it is just a rumor, and I'm sure the producers are putting a lot of thought into who they pick. Not everyone will be happy, but if it works, it works.

Anonymous said...

Don't judge a book by its cover.

Harvey Keitel might surprise some people.

Look deep, before making judgements.

Anonymous said...

I want to read Ed say it is a good choice for him and the show. That will go a looooong way to making me happy about it.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully we will hear a positive report on Keitel from Mr. Bernero. This has to be a really important decision for him and the network. I would think he would have some say in the matter.

We need to wait and see what happens.

Anonymous said...

I would have liked a woman or an unknown. I am sorry to repeat what some others have said but this man is really really really old.

Anonymous said...

hmm I will have to think about this . I know it is just a rumor but I think it could work.

Anonymous said...

Harvey Keitel was great in LuLu Over The Bridge--he was tender and kind (and MP was in the movie too, as his ex-wife's second husband).

He might just be GREAT!

Anonymous said...

Criminal Minds is a financial asset for CBS and they are not going to screw around and dick over price if there is an actor they think will protect their asset due to Mandy's stunt.

I really do believe that this man could go either way. We have to believe that if he is a weak link then the writers will hide his flaws.

Anonymous said...

They should have saved their money and used it in season four.

Anonymous said...

I have never even heard of the man.

Anonymous said...

I don't think his age matters at all. They weren't shopping for eye candy. They needed an experienced actor who could hold his own and HK can do that.

Lets not forget that it could also just be a rumor. JD was clear on that.

Anonymous said...

I think people need to realize that Mandy is just not coming back. He is not coming back next season or the season after it.

There is no reason to instantly dislike this man because he isn't Mandy. That seems really short sighted to me. Lets see him in a few episodes and then look back on their decision. If this is even what they have decided to do.

Anonymous said...

I am shocked and surprised that nobody has asked the most important thing about this man:

HAS HE EVER LEFT A SHOW WHILE STILL UNDER CONTRACT?

I say lets go with the flow and see where it takes us.

Anonymous said...

We will have to wait and see. At least we won't have him for the first several episodes.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe some of the comments I am reading about Harvey Keitel. Seriously. He is an amazing actor; please try to see past the age. His resume is quite lengthy. And like I said before, if they bring him into CM, they have good reasons to do so. I know many of you are looking for someone young like the rest of the cast, but there could be a lot of other angles to explore with an older character if one were to be brought in.

We'll just have to see if this is only a rumor or if it is a serious possibility, though.

Anonymous said...

At least we LIKED Paget and that still sucked. This is just big time bad.

Anonymous said...

I come back a while later, and I see some of the comments and all I can say is, "WOW."

Age has nothing to do with it.

People need to get passed the fact that Mandy is NOT or WILL not return!

Older actors bring in more experience and wisdom.

Anonymous said...

D.

In your opinion age doesn't matter. It matters to me. I was not expecting them to hire a really old person for the show. I think it is horrible.

I am still allowed an opinion on Jill's blog I think.

There had to be a younger person available. I am not happy.

Kirsten said...

I love Keitel in the many Scorsese films he has been in. I am actually curious how it will work.

Anonymous said...

I actually like the choice they made...if they even made this choice. He is a great actor.

Everyone needs to chill it down a bit in here. I think this all has to do more with Mandy and not liking change than anything else.

The man is old but honestly he is a good actor.

Anonymous said...

If people were expecting them to hire a young newbie like Kirsten or Matthew then they were fooling themselves.

It had to be someone with experience and a lot of background. People are rushing to judgement. That is certainly your choice if you choose to do it but you might be pleasantly surprised.

Anonymous said...

Why don't we just wait until we read Mr. B's take on who they choose.

Anonymous said...

I have an AMAZING Harvey Keitel story that I love to tell. I met him in New York.

I think he is very "Mandyesque" if that makes sense. I don't really care one way or the other about him. He'll do fine, he is very talented.

Lee :)

Anonymous said...

What shows are running against us this coming season?

That will have a lot to do with my decision on this potential pick.

Anonymous said...

I love Harvey, LOVE him!!
But I personally don't think even he could salvage the show.
Though it would give me a reason to keep watching, because at the moment, I never want to see it continue. But if it had to Keitel would be one of the only people that would keep me tuned in.

For the part though, I think he is too old. It is TV though, and he does have that face...the 'I know what you are thinking and I can solve all' cop kind of face. So he would fit in.
He'll never have that presence that Gideon brought to the team, and now that the dynamics of his binding force is gone...well I don't think the team can recover from that.

So to see the show off, CBS go for it, Keitel is your MAN!

Anonymous said...

I think the show will be fine no matter who they pick. Gideon was definately a stand out character but he was one of seven. We still have the majority of our characters and they will make the necessary adjustments to make this work.

I think we need to chill and watch and support the show. We don't know how we are going to like it until we watch it.

Anonymous said...

We need to wait to see if we are even getting him and then worry about it.

He has an impressive resume but we need to see him with the rest of the cast.

Mandy Patinkin was not young either so age should not have a thing to do with it.

Anonymous said...

Speechless.

Anonymous said...

It goes up against Private Practice(the Greys Anatomy spin off), which quite honestly makes me nervous. I watched the special pilot and it was AMAZING!!! It was the only show of the new season my husband and I were really looking forward to..then it goes up against CM! I was so upset. The other shows are Bionic Woman and as usual, American Idol.

Anonymous said...

Bionic Woman- Remakes don't work.

And Private Practice- blah. Apparently, I read that Kate Walsh got ripped to shreads when promoting the show.

I'm not a fan of GA.

Anonymous said...

Private Practice is going to be steep competition for our show. It is going to play to a younger audience but we beat Lost and we can beat this show.

I don't know this guy well enough to offer an opinion. I am concerned about some of the comments I am reading. I hope that this is just a reaction to anyone replacing Mandy and not really directed towards the actor himself.

Anonymous said...

OMGGGGGG!

OKAY, Christi please!
This blog is for devoted fans!

My problem with HK is all the running and stuff. Mandy, you know did a bit of running too. Not like Shemar, but Mandy was very active. That was my only concern. But he is a very good actor and as far as fitting in he does.

Before Paget(sp)came on the show, I once read comment that she could be the kiss of death. She is so good on show, I like her better then Lola. Sorry Lola.

I think if he can do the active stuff, he will be fine. might be nice for him to play someone younger than him.

Anonymous said...

Open Minds Friends!

He is a great actor. Lets wait to hear what Ed has to say and then lets just watch and then it will prob. be just great.

Anonymous said...

I think it is a great choice!

What!?

Kayryn said...

No no no. I hope that's all it is, just a rumor.

Anonymous said...

going with him makes sense. after losing MP they need a new senior agent, so his age doesn't bother me.

I really am going to take a wait and see approach. I looked through his credits on IMDB and he's done a few crime projects in the past.

It could be good, it could be bad, but I definately am interested in where they could go with this.

I hope they don't just sub him in for the Gideon character with him having a lot more screen time than the other characters. As long as he doesn't become the "center" of the show it's all good

Anonymous said...

They are going to have to work him in slowly to make me happy. If the becomes the immediate center of attention I am going to have a big bad about this.

Anonymous said...

I don't think that "Private Practice" is going to be a problem. It is going to attract a whole different type of audience.

I think Keitel would be a great choice. He brings a bunch of experience with him.

Anonymous said...

Because of my previous comment.....
I meant nothing towards the show itself.
Trust me, previously devoted fan *points to self* I know what it means.
I'm just saying that MP won't get a proper send off so it is going to be a bit awkward. And the average shelf life of a show is 3 seasons Harvey would be an amazing way to see the end of a show. Like in an amazing blaze of glory sort of way.
I mean come on the man is AMAZING!
I apologize for my unfortunate bluntness before. I never seem to get the right words out. I do truly wish for the show to go on for as long as it can, especially because of the amazing fan base that it has. It really is a special thing.

dearlydead said...

Harvey Keitel is skilled actor and, imho, a good choice. I am a little concerned about his age. He is 68. How will they explain someone of retirement age?

Actually, the more I thought about it, after someone else mentioned it, I think Keith Carridine would have been perfect for the part. He could easily project the same, intense, authorative manner that Gideon did. And, he's the same age.

I think HK can, too, but the age issue?
-DD
P.S. Thank you, Shemar! ;)

_

Anonymous said...

Shemar is a really strong man. Maybe they are intending for Morgan to carry the guy around the crime scenes.

I am sure the guy is an ok actor but this is a little bit more than just a show about thinking. There is actual action. He is really old. How is he going to run or do anything physical at all?

Nobody is thinking about the fans in this one. It is a bad choice. I hope it falls through.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Bernero must have some plan in mind if this is who they take. Maybe his plan will make more sense than this seems to me now. Maybe he will be like an office person kind of leader who stays in DC. That could work. Like he could be the one who does the paperwork and stuff like that and not be in the field.

Anonymous said...

April makes a great point. We are all assuming that he would be in the field. Maybe they intend for him to be in the office and that could be really good. He is an accomplished actor. He could be there with Garcia. Like an office supervisor with a lot of profiling experience and they go to him for advice and stuff like that.

Anonymous said...

I'm okay with it. Not like we have a choice.

Anonymous said...

This is not what I was expecting to wake up to. OK.

Anonymous said...

I'll give him a chance. At least the season will be a third over before we have to lay eyes on him.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it will be like a starter contract for just a few shows. Do they do that in the US? To see if he can do the show you try him out in the first.

Anonymous said...

I hope that it is true. I really like him. He would be great on the show.

Anonymous said...

My english is not to good so please show patience. I miss Mandy too. I miss his Gideon. I think this is a good relly good actor. We should open our arms to him for him to be welcome.

Anonymous said...

I had to take a minute when I read the post to collect my thoughts. I am going to post my comment before I read the slew of comments already here. I don't want to be influenced.

I think that Harvey Keitel is an incredibly seasoned and talented actor who could give the show an amazing boost in energy.

I am going to miss Gideon so much. It is so strange for me to be so attached to a tv character but he drew me in from the season opener. When I first read that there was a possibility of the replacement being named I have to admit to having many pangs of sadness.

I hope that Mr. Keitel is given a wonderfully rich and multi level character to play and I am sure he will do a great job.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Keitel is not replacing Mandy. Mandy left us for whatever reason he had. He left us. We never left him and Mr. Keitel had nothing to do with his going. So I hope they sign him. I hope that the cast and crew are happy with him and I have great faith in our writers to give the man a great character. We have so much to be thankful for on this blog. We have to put this all in perspective. We need to be nicer to him and give him all our best wishes for a long and successful career. We need to get over Mandy's abandonment and move on. If that is with Harvey Keitel then okay.

Anonymous said...

They would never consider hiring him if he isn't qualified to help the show so he has my vote!

Anonymous said...

Great choice. Age is just a number. Talent is ageless. The man can act and that is all I care about.

Anonymous said...

There are enough challenges for the writers and the cast without their fans taking such a negative attitude. I am looking forward to the season with whoever they hire for the new part.

Anonymous said...

Not my first choice but that is okay with me. I love the show.

Anonymous said...

Fresh season with a fresh new character and a fresh new cast member. All those things sound great to me. It is our time to move on. We are not the first set of tv fans to lose a beloved actor and character.

Lets embrace this opportunity!

Anonymous said...

I am an original member of the yahoo group and the blog and I love the show. Frankly I do not care who they cast. The show has never been about only one character for me.

Anonymous said...

He is experienced and it is good.

Anonymous said...

It is all good.

Anonymous said...

The importance of getting an experienced actor onto the show can't be down played. They had to find someone with the ability to fill a really big hole. I'm ready. Bring him on.

Anonymous said...

As Thomas Gibson has said, it is very disappointing but it will shake things up and they will move on. I think as viewers we need to reserve judgement on whoever they put in the role that MP made his own. As for Harvey Keitel, I really quite like him, despite his age, and think that not only has he played edgy and abrasive characters but also has shown a softer and more compassionate side in some roles (Thelma and Louise)- the BAU needs both. I'll still be watching, whatever the outcome...

ferngully said...

i think it,s a great choice

Anonymous said...

I am not sure I understand the references to the man's age. Profilers use their brains and experience to find unsubs. I would think that some years under the belt would be a benefit.

I am personally hoping they sign him. The waiting game has gotten a bit prolonged. We are closing in on the season. It would be nice to have the new person ready for our sweeps this season. I hope we get word soon.

Anonymous said...

If we have to have another member of the team then he is as good as anyone else. Lets take a look at what kind of character they write for him. I bet donuts they are working hard to make him really good.

Anonymous said...

If Ed Bernero wants him it is okay with me and my family.

Anonymous said...

It is OK with me too.

IvyB said...

Wow I just read through all the comments. I love HK, he's a wonderful actor. Like someone said- if he does join the cast, they could always have him in an office or on the phone giving advice to the team (he doesn't have to run around, we have Morgan for tackles and Hotch for shoot-outs).

The only thing I'm concerned with is his screentime. HK is a big name, and I don't know what his salery is like or if he would demand a certain amount of screentime. He's not going to be the main character, this is an ensamble and whomever they end up casting needs to realize this.

Anonymous said...

i can't imagine the show without gideon - yeah keitel's good but GIDEON was the selling point!

Anonymous said...

I just read the news on Keitel. I totally like the idea of him replacing Patinkin. Harvey is a great actor who is definetely capable to play a profiler. I hope he will say YES :)

jenn said...

Gideon's character was very nurturing and I feel that added to seeing the group as a "family" which really made the show work for me. As I recall Mr. Bernero himself called Gideon's role "motherly". I cannot picture that coming from HK. I completely understand he is not supposed to be Gideon but that dynamic in the group should be maintained. Hotchner is the other leader in the group and his character does not possess this quality. That is why I said I cannot see HK in this role. I'm not saying he's not a great actor, or that I will not give him a chance or any of that but he is not who I would have liked to have seen picked and that was the question "How do you feel about Harvey Keitel." It also has nothing to do with replacing MP (although that was devastating) because I was very excited when I heard rumors of Michael Keaton.

Anonymous said...

To be honest I need to see the character before I decide. I was never as concerned with the person they picked as I am about what the character they play is going to be. Show me the character. No actor makes no difference to me.

Ztivokreb said...

I like him as an actor, but I'm not sure he would meld well with the rest of the cast.

And the age thing does matter, because realistically, he wouldn't be out in the field anymore.

Unless they decide he's going to stay in the office, I don't know how that would work.

respectanimals said...

I would not expect a successful movie actor like Harvey Keitel to actually want to do a television series, especially given the hours they work and his age, but if the rumors are true, then he sounds ok to me. He may not have been my first choice, but he is a phenomenal actor and he could fit quite well into the darker feel of the show. I'm not too concerned about his age myself, as they can probably downplay that somewhat. Besides, somebody his age is much more preferable to me than somebody in the other direction, as there are already a lot of young actors/actresses on the show.

Anonymous said...

Interesting choice. He is experienced. I'm open minded about it.

IvyB said...

Jenn-

You don't see Hotch as being "motherly"? I do, I think both Hocth and Gideon had it, though with Hotch it might have been less pronounced.

Since this is just a rumor, I'llr eserve judgement until the first episode with the new character.

Anonymous said...

I did some looking around IMDB on him and he seems really impressive. He certainly has the resume to be effective for the show. Age isn't a factor for me. If I feel the urge for some eye candy I always have Shemar for that and that is not why I watch the show.

Anonymous said...

As predicted there is a split amongst us fans on the choice (I realize it is not official yet)and I think everyone knew it would be this way.

There really was nobody they could have hired or considered that would make everyone happy. My friends and I cannot even agree and there were only 6 of us in the discussion. There is no way that several million viewers were all going to be happy.

For all everyone knows this will be a wonderfully fascinating and beloved character. I think the network would never knowingly hire someone who could not turn their investment into profit. I am counting on that. So off we go into our dreaded repeats until the newest season. Whatever happens it will be good I am sure.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to go into this with a positive attitude. If it works out well then I will give Kudos to CBS on a fine choice and if it doesn't I will just blame Mandy Patinkin for jerking us around. Either way the show is cool with me and always will be.

Anonymous said...

It will be good to just have it done once and for all in my book. Lets get the show on the road and name someone. I am tired of all the speculation and the drama that the no show caused. I would welcome anyone at this point.

Anonymous said...

AS long as CBS pick a GOOD actor, named actor, that will help bring in new fans to the show and help to stabilise everything I'm happy.

If we the fans don't support whoever they choose then we risk loosing CM altogether. We might dislike them - but for me personally, the show would have to bring in a monkey (literally!) to bring the show down to the c**p level of 99% of the rest of TV at the moment!

PAOLAFROMPARIS said...

I'll wait and see...

Anonymous said...

Not sure about this. Isn't he mostly a movie actor? I will truck on over to imdb and have a looksy.

Anonymous said...

Do wish we would hear something soon. It does seem to be taking quite the while now.

Anonymous said...

I guess it's taking a while because they want to make sure the person they pick is right for the role. They just can't pick anybody.

Anonymous said...

They have to have time to negotiate the money and perks and all that pesky business stuff.

I hope they throw a clause in his contract for penalties if he just ups and leaves one day.

I like the guy.

Anonymous said...

I like the idea of that clause very much. Great thinking.

PS: This gentleman does frontal nudity in some of his movies. If things get desperate....just kidding.

Rather fancy myself okay with this pick.

Anonymous said...

Criminal Minds is the writing members and as long as they keep writing then I will to keep watching.

Anonymous said...

I think he is very old but I am very old so I wish him to get the job. Good actor I think.

Anonymous said...

I have seen pics of Keitel, and I think he's in great shape. He's a versatile act-or. Me likey. Hope he gets the job.

Anonymous said...

I've been reading about him. He sounds okay. All this conversation and wouldn't it be funny if they announced someone else. lol

Anonymous said...

I think I am going to approach this with a wait and see what he can do kind of attitude. It was a real surprise choice to me.

Anonymous said...

I hate to sound fixated but has there ever been a real press release from Mandy really telling what truly happened?

Keitel is ok w/ me.

jenn said...

To IVYB:
I really don't see Hotch as being "motherly". I see him as a concerned for his team kind of person, but wouldn't say motherly. Gideon always had the soft side to just know what was going on with the others and talk to them about it....take them under his wing. I think Hotch is far more diplomatic and just more distant with feelings and such.
