CRIMINAL MINDS: OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM ED BERNERO

There have been several reports recently in the media about the Mandy Patinkin situation on Criminal Minds. Firstly, they are true -- Mr. Patinkin has left the show. What's troubling to us though, is that the reports tend to suggest or hint that the Producers, the Studios or CBS have something to do with what has happened. Phrases like 'maybe cooler heads will prevail...' and the like have been used. Let me make this clear: this is not about a contract renegotiation, this is not about money, this is not about something Mr. Patinkin asked for that wasn't provided -- in fact, everyone involved in the show has for two years bent over backward to give him ANYTHING he wanted.

Mr. Patinkin told the show, the studios and the network the he was returning right up to the day before we started shooting the first episode and then simply did not show up. He also has not contacted anyone within the show (producers, cast, crew) to explain why he isn't returning. Even to this moment, we have no word from him. He gave us no advance notice that anything was wrong, no oppurtunity to find a way to make the loss of this character work, no indication that we should be looking for someone else, no warning that we might have to rewrite the first seven scripts (which is how far ahead we try to work) without the central character in them. None. Zero. He was not, as some media reports have indicated, written 'lightly' in our first episode, in fact, it was quite the opposite. Because of the construct of the first episode story, he was actually in the center of that episode. He left us completely in the proverbial lurch.

As loyal fans of the show, we think you all deserve an explanation and I wish I had a better one to give you. The most amazing writing staff in television is working very hard to find a way to make this work and we will find a way to give you the organic, dramatic experience you expect from CM.

If I have new news I will provide it and if there are questions you have, Jill will provide a way to get the questions to us at the show and we will do our best to answer. If you hear a rumor, please ask us. I remain touched and humbled by the support you have all shown the show.

Thank you so much --

Ed Bernero

There is never an adequate reason for bad behavior. This is not first grade where you say the dog ate my homework. To put the show in this bind and to willfully disrespect your fellow cast is not how respectful people act.

I won't say that I am not worried that it is a health issue because I am worried about it but you still tell the network and let them work around it. You don't just fall off the edge of the planet.

Reading through all 200+ comments on this thread, I must say that I am impressed that so many of us are expressing our thanks to Mr. Bernero for letting us know what he knows.

He didn't have to let us know anything at all, but he did, as I said before, he is one classy gentleman. He and the rest of the cast and crew must be at their wits end right now.

I am glad that so many of us are showing our support and love to the cast and crew of CM. They must be as gobsmacked (to borrow an expression from our UK friends) as we are about this whole situation.

Let's give all of them a huge virtual hug and our good wishes for a great third season. As they say,"the show must go on."

To Thomas, Shemar, Matthew, AJ, Kirsten, and Paget, *hugs* to all of you.

To Ed, Simon, Andrew, Scott, Jeff, and all the other writers, casting directors, producers, directors, and creators, we give you our support and promise that we will continue to watch the show just as faithfully as before.

I hope Mr. Patinkin makes some kind of statement soon to end all the speculation. Not knowing leads to all the rumors mentioned to in some of our postings. It also causes way to much ill will.

So, let's lift our glasses (I am drinking coffee right now, but that will have to do) to our favorite show, cast, and crew, and wish them a great season three.

Love to all of you!

I don't imagine it will be difficult to explain Gideon leaving the BAU, especially after what happened to him in last year's finale, but it does mean that all the hard work the CM folks have done so far getting ready for Season Three is down the tubes. And I don't see how they can air Doubt now, but maybe they will be kind enough to add it to the DVDs, so we at least get to see it.

With regard to a recast, I would personally prefer they leave things open, in hopes of convincing Mandy to return eventually. But if that isn't possible, and they absolutely must add a new team member, I would still like to see Mary Page Keller join the team as Katie Cole. Whatever they decide to do, I just hope the writers come up with something better than they did with the Elle/Emily trade-off. I read on another blog, btw, that Ed stated "That haircut wasn't our idea." Sorry I blamed you guys for that fiasco Ed.

Thanks to Mr Bernero for his message. Classy and respectful!
Now I'm waiting for the other side of the story ;)
Not that I don't value Mr Bernero's sayings, but I'd rather hear both arguments ^^

I'd like to respond to those who say that MP migt be sick or be depressed or anything. I've suffered from severe depression for several years, and yet it did not make me forget my good manners.

If he's sick, then I hope he'll get better. But that does not mean him not showing up for work without notice is acceptable. It's understandable in a way (IF he is sick), but not acceptable. But hey it's just my point of view after all ^^

Anyway, I'm confident the writing team and the cast will make do as best as they can with this situation.

I've discovered the show lately on French TV and I absolutely love it! I can't wait for next season ;)

I LIKED the haircut. But then, I clip the collie for summer.

Everyone needs a collie. There is no greater picker-upper. Esp. when you're picking up the fur....

I hope everyone is feeling just a LITTLE better this morning. It'll all be okay.

Good Morning everyone. A quick reminder that our weekend chat is today. If you do not have the password you need to email Stacy asap.

I have begun receiving tons of emails for the cast and crew and I promise to faithfully deliver them.

So it is a new day and that is always a good thing. A new day brings promise and hope of bright and happy things.

See everyone in the chat room later today.......I don't think there will be a lack of things to talk about. lol

As a moderator I took the liberty of deleting the last comment. This thread is open for the honest exchange of ideas, feelings and comments but it is not open for bashing of other posters.

Emotions are running high and we all understand that but there has to be a limit on what is acceptable and not acceptable.

Patinkin gone? What's Benjamin Bratt doing these days?

Peter: I understand what you are saying and agree with you to a certain extent. Family does come first, HOWEVER, in this day and age with all of the technology we have, there really isn't much of an excuse that can be made. A quick phone call or a text message takes just a few seconds. If he didn't feel like speaking to anyone, he could have called and left a voicemail on someone's office phone in the middle of the night. That simple little task would have made it A LITTLE bit easier for the hundreds of people that work on that show!

Anonymous said...

I just read his letter and I am in total shock and denial. I have no words.

Anonymous said...

Kris makes a wonderful point. There must be hundreds of people that work on the show. What happens to them when the star throws a nutty and walks away unannounced. My prayers go out to Mr. Patinkin if he is ill. I have been a fan for years. I will keep him in my prayers always but now I will also pray that he learns the correct way of handling situations. Thank you to Mr. Bernero and to the cast and crew I send all my love and positive energy. You can do this. We know you can. You have never let us down and you will rise to this situation and you will shine bright.

Jill: Since you are not allowing comments on the above post I am posting here. The Italian group is going to put all their emails into a internet folder for you to deliver. Thank you for doing this for us. It will be better than 100 individual emails for you to have to print out.

Mr. Bernero: Tell your people that the Italian fans love all of them.

Mr. Bernero: You rock in my book. Thanks for taking the time to consider how the fans were feeling being spoon feed garbage information by the press. Thank you for your honesty and your time. Thank CBS for us for taking the high road and not getting into the mud with the crazy lying journalist spewing lie after lie. CBS Paramount and ABC Television should sue him for every penny he has and his train collection.

Mandy: Make a statement already. We deserve one. Your co-workers deserve one. If you are ill or your depression has come back then just tell us and try your hardest to make this up to everyone and we will try to forgive this insult to all of us.

Sorry for my bad english.

I sent him a train when Jill went to the set earlier this year. I am a big fan. I want him to say something.

Mr. Bernero, the above does not change my admiration for your display of devotion to the fanbase yesterday. I really admire you for your stand up attitude. People hate to be lied to and we were reading lie after lie.Thank you.

By the way, I think people should starting e-mailing Matt Roush cause that man still hates the show and possibly finds this amusing. He disses on the show, and sooner and later he's going to start taking cheap shots.

I've written to this guy a bunch of times, obviously he doesn't get it.

So fans of CM, start your engines.lol.

Seriously. Send angry e-mails to that man, so he can know not to mess with fans of the show and the show itself.

I have previously and numerously posted this past year that I hoped the younger actors: Kirsten, A.J. and Matthew, would be enriched as actors by working with seasoned pros like Mandy, Thomas, Paget and Shemar. So to Kirsten, A.J. and Matthew I would say: You have just learned what to never do in your business. And we love you all and will support you all and you have our hearts and our energy.

I have been checking this blog religiously for almost a year now, enjoying provactive discussion both about the production of a great television show and the cases it explores. Many have professed almost familial love for Mr. Patinkan, citing his devotion to family and extensive artistic career. So quickly are we ready to judge. I would agree that Mr. Patinkin seemingly let down the folks he works with and they have every right to be upset. What has he done to us? I understand concern, but this judgement is terribly premature. Even Mr. Bernero asserts he has no idea what is going on. If I were another member of this cast I would learn the lesson-how quickly they turn. I am surprised that a generally thoughtful and compassionate group can so easily be moved to judging a situation they know nothing about. If Mr. Patinkin deserves this admonition, he will still deserve it tomorrow. If he doesn't reading these comments will not move him to feel supported enough to face whatever is moving him to behave in this way. Let's give him the same benefit of a doubt we would want for ourselves.

Anonymous said...

Anon: I agree with almost everything you just posted. You asked how it affected us and that I can answer. We read for days, as you did I am sure, article after article about negotiations over salary and benefits and all the articles said that the "powers that be" were not giving in. They said we were going to lose Patinkin because they were being stubborn with him and playing hard ball with him. It created lots of very bad ill will between many fans and the studio and network. Now those articles being written are certainly not Mandy's fault but they were inaccurate and he had to have known about them. Whatever is happening with him, and I pray it is nothing bad, he sat quiet and allowed entities not at fault for anything to take the slap to take the heat off of himself. I personally have a real problem with that. There is a quote that says that silence can be deafening. His silence has gone on for over a week now.

Have people on this site worshiped him? The owner of this site started the site because of her admiration and devotion to him. Jill adores him. Do I think she will or we all should throw out his CDs and burn and delete his pictures from our computers? Of course not but until I hear that a sincere apology has been given to the people he works with he will remain very low on the list of people I respect. And that I do hate.

Anonymous said...

All I have to say is that I appreciate that we were finally told the truth. Wouldn't it have been nice if the media had not lied but I guess they find a way to sleep at night. I applaud Mr. Bernero's honesty and I thank him for what must have been an enormously hard statement to write. I can only imagine the hurt he must personally be feeling and my deepest prayers and best wishes are extended to him and his whole staff. You have good Karma coming your way Mr. Bernero.

I started watching CM because MP was on it. However, CM is a great show and the other cast memebers can and will carry the show just fine without MP. By the end of the season everyone will be saying MP WHO? Let Thomas become the leader of the group and the show will be just fine without any loss of viewers. CM doesn't need MP and neither do the we. P*ss on MP!

Mr. Bernero,
Thank you for your official statement. I have to admit that I did not start watching Criminal Minds until about the beginning of last season. I was actually told about the show by my sister. Since then I have become a huge fan and I never missed an episode and even got myself Season 1 on dvd. Primarily started watching because of Matthew Gray Gubler, who I find a talented actor. Now I'm just hooked on the show and all of the actors are amazing. I look forward to seeing Season 3 and just wanted to let you know you have a fan (I've even been converting friends and co-workers to this amazing show).

Anonymous said...

I like the Ashes and Dust comment. Someone call our angel Andrew Wilder and suggest Ashes and Dust, Part Two. After Abby blows himself and the unsub up the reporters start printing garbage and a member of Abby's group stalks them. I think Andrew would do a wonderful job of it. Kidding...kinda.

There is a difference between hard core media and the sleeze we have been reading. I think when it made itself into the main stream hard media is when it became a whole different day. Then it seemed real and still it turns out to be nothing but sleeze. I think what that says about journalism today is horrible.

As for Mandy. My parents taught me when I was a child that there is always a proper way to close a door. You never know when you might need to get back in. God Bless and keep him whatever his issues. Thank you for his time and energy these past two years. He brought most of us together and most of us will truly miss Gideon. But this was a sleezy way out.

what a lot of comments from all of you and yet it looks like sensorship is going onhere in this subject of mandy, what happenend freedom of speach, with out the sly swearing which appeasr now and then

Anon, I am not quite sure what you mean by sensorhip--it seems to me that people have been able to comment on all sides of this issue.

I don't run this blog or have any influence over it, but if you are talking about posts being deleted, I can only imagine that they may have been highly critical posts of other poster's opinions or just plain nasty--by which I mean containing foul language and unconstructive.

I am sure the reasoning is that it does no good to start attacking one another. Everyone has their opinion on this matter and those opinions should be respected whether one agree's with them or not.

Okay, sermonette over.

I am just as troubled by this as the rest of you are. I have been a fan of Mandy's for many years, and am very disappointed over this. I will be interested to hear what he has to say about all this.

As Jill said earlier, the chat later this afternoon will certainly be interesting!!

Anonymous said...

Ah Andrew Wilder. Now that is name we all love to smile about. How unfortunate that right now he is probably developing an ulcer along with all the other writers. I don't know what happened but the writers (no one else either) did anything to deserve any of this. And the saddest part is that they have no idea what "this" is. I have read and reread Mr. Bernero's post three times and each time I am more and more saddened by the current situation. I thank him for sharing the truth with us.

Mandy bashing???? Is that what the previous poster says we are doing??? I am a huge fan of Mandy's. All I want is some statement from him explaining all of this. Does he owe me one? Yes he does. I have supported him for my whole adult life. Concerts, cookbooks, movies and tv shows. You bet I think he owes me. He owes all of us. That is not bashing. That is asking someone to be accountable for their actions. It is called the real world.

First off, thank you you very much, Ed, for letting us know this news. It comes as a shock, but hearing it from you lets us know you care what the fans think and that says volumes.

Secondly, Jill I am so sorry for how you are feeling right now. There is nothing I can say that will make that hurt go away.

And last but not least, we may have all loved Mandy, but we love Criminal Minds more. The show did not revolve around him; as it has been stated it is an ensemble cast. I am still looking forward to season 3 because I have faith in the cast and crew. I'll be there when the new season comes on and I'm sure you all will be, too!

Anonymous said...

Mandy is a complicated person. I love him so I can say that. He has problems, as many people do, and sometimes he does things in a way you or I would not do them. When you have been around him as much as I have been you learn to make adjustments for him. It is the only way you can remain his fan and adore him.

I realize that the Criminal Minds fans are upset right now and I do not wish to imply that they don't have a right to be upset. Mandy will make a statement. He always does. Then it is up to you to decide if that suits you and you can remain his fan or if it falls too short for your individual expectations. I can't answer that for anyone.

Obviously Mr. Bernero thinks highly of the fans and nobody can possibly doubt that after his heartfelt statement posted here yesterday. I assume that it was posted with the full knowledge and permission of the network and various organizations associated with the show. Certainly they are to be commended for their commitment to all of you.

I ask only that you wait and listen to what Mandy has to say. His statement may ease some of the hurt feelings you have right now. He is truly commited to his fans and has nothing but the highest regard and love for all of you.

Anonymous said...

Okay. I know it has been said before. But although it doesn't have to be RIGHT AWAY.

But, Bernero can you try and get Kate Mulgrew or Peta Wilson as a "short term" replacement??

Anonymous said...

Mr. Bernero, it is unfortunate that criminal minds has lost mandy for whatever the reason. I want you to know that it is still going to be my number one show and i will still be a die hard fan! I think it is not just mandy who makes the show but the whole cast and crew. I really love the character of Dr. Spenser Reid, Maybe your talented writers could just write it in that it was too much for jason to lose his friend last year in the finaly, anyway they spin it Im sure it will be fine, you have alot of fans in Canada!
sincerly sienna
thanks jill to you for getting this info out to the fans

Interesting to read anonymous say that a statement from Mandy is on its way. That is cool. I don't need a statement from him. I need him to make this right with CBS and the Production company. We are in rerun hell right now and not effected by this right now. It is everyone he worked for and with that deserves the statement. I never knew a darn thing about Mr. Bernero but I do now. He is a honest man. He came to us out of a sense of loyalty and that in my mind speaks volumes. When he is satisfied with Mandy's excuse he can let us know and if they forgive him then no harm no foul in my book. Until I hear it from him then nothing else is of interest to me except to say to the cast and the crew that I appreciate them and that I hope they are okay.

Anonymous said...

Jeannie:

I apologize, I must not have been clear in my earlier post. I wasn't talking about Mandy bashing, because I don't really think any of the posts were really Mandy bashing--people are hurt and confused and are talking it out in their posts.

I was talking about an anonymous poster speculating about sensorship and I was supposing that it could possibly be that posts may have been deleted deleted because they were bashing another poster's opinion or feelings and we are all allowed our opinions and feelings whether or not they agree with you or me or anyone else.

I want to know what happened, just as much as everyone else does.

When your decision involves dozens of other people and might jeopardize the work of a dozen other, YOU have to adjust.

That is very true Caroline.

This poster has possibly spend a lot of time making excuses for Mandy, when in fact he has to explain himself.

Anf if there is some type of illness invovled,I will be sorry to hear that.

However, the way he handled the situation is no excuse for going the route he went.

As long as the other cast members are still around, I'll still be watching.

I digress.

Bring on Season 3.

I've sat through and read all of the comments, and it seems like half are bashing Mandy and 100% for the show, and the other half are wondering if his health is at risk. It's interesting to me that most reactions only show up half way. Which brings me to my point.

When it comes to a performer, you are dealing with two people. So and so, the performer, and so and so, the person. Half of the comments, as I have read them to be, were speaking more to Mandy the performer than Mandy the person.

It really shocks me that some would never watch him again, even though he has not said anything about it so far, there are considerations. Family problems, depression, cancer, and even to the extreme (i.e. Chris Benoit, may it NEVER come to that).

I want to be the first to say that I do not know Mandy the person, and have never met him. I only know of Mandy the performer, whom I've watched on tv, in movies, and listened too many, many times. I will never, ever, lose respect for him as a performer, because he is wonderfully talented actor and his voice is literally a dream.

As a person, I do not condone him or condemn him for this, but it does give me a better insight as to who he might be. I wish that more of you could think of it like that too, IMO.

Thank you, Ed Bernero, for that statement.

My heart goes to everyone on the Criminal Minds cast and crew, and that includes Mandy and his family. It's been tough on everyone, not just for the fans.

Anonymous said...

I've just got back from a working away, to this rather shocking news.

Thank you to EB for taking the decision, and the time, to tell the fans, who I'm sure, like me, appreciate the honesty.

It is a shame that this situation has happened, but the show must go on, and although MP's character was a main, and as EB said, played a central role in many of the early episodes of season 3, one person does not make the show. I'm confident that the scriptwriters will be able to pull something out of the bag, and will come up with a credible storyline to explain the absence of Jason Gideon.

Thank you once again to Jill for making it so easy for the cast and crew of CM to keep in touch with the fans, and quell any rumours before they get out of hand.

Although I haven't finished watching S2 yet.....bring on season 3!!!

Anonymous said...

Lang: While I don't disagree with anything you basically said I think that Mandy the man negotiates contracts and makes commitments to render his services. It is not as though this has all taken place in a day. It has been a week now and the man Mandy you talk about has not communicated with the studio. I can guarantee you that if he or someone in his family was unfortuantely ill they would be the first to understand and arrangements could have been made. Mandy the man has not acted responsibly.

Mandy the entertainer. Would you hire him if you were producing a show? I wouldn't and if I did I would never ask him to sign a contract because they seem to be meaningless to him. It would be a waste of money to pay the lawyer.

He has handled his problem, whatever it is, miserably. Again.

Anonymous said...

Thank you from me as well Mr. Bernero for setting the record straight.

I wish Mr. Patinkin all the best in his future projects. Go.

Now lets talk about using some of his screen time for Lady Kirsten. We love Kirsten and want more Garcia.

Kisses and big hugs to everyone. Season Three is going to rock the roof!

Anonymous said...

Thank you Mr. Bernero. Thank you very much.

Anonymous said...

Languini, your post was very thoughtful and well put. But I'm afraid I must disagree with you.

Whatever Mr. Patinkin's issues are, I wish him all the best in dealing with them. If he didn't want to come back to the show, that is certainly his right. Creative differences, personal problems, whatever -- it's really none of our business.

BUT --

To leave the show by simply not showing up, without the simple courtesy of a phone call? That reflects the kind of personal AND professional rudeness that I find unacceptable. Whatever the issue, when literally hundreds of people cannot do their job without you, the very least you can do is call or have someone call for you. When you've made a point of saying publicly how those people are like your family, it just makes it that much worse.

So -- am I ever going to listen to his music or watch his movies again? Probably. I've enjoyed his work very much over the years, and probably will again. But for right now, I'm slipping my "Evita" disc into its case and putting it in the back of the cabinet. Whenever Mr. Patinkin decides to make a statement, I'll be interested in what he has to say. But I can't imagine anything that will excuse the absolute rudeness he's shown to his co-workers, and that will take me a while to get over. Maybe quite a long while.

Mr Bernero,

Thanks for the information. I started watching the show because of Thomas Gibson, but soon have grown to love the show as a whole. I love the characters, actors, the writing team and the rest of the crew.

I'm totally shocked with the news about Mandy. I wonder, along with everyone else, what happened, but the information will come in time.

Everyone involved with the CM show is in my thoughts and prayers.

Jill that means you too. This blog is great as well as the fans too.

Thank you for coming to tell us the truth.

Thank you, Mr. Bernero for taking the time to keep the CM fans posted in recent developments. You have an excellent team so I can rest assured that the show will continue with well-written stories.

I'm so touched and humbled by Mr. Bernero for so quickly taking the time to let Jill and all of the CM fans know what was going on. His statement is so honest and generous that it only reminds me what a wonderful cast and crew CM has and anyone who wouldn't want to be on it would be out of their minds.

I hate to think badly of Mandy, especially when we don't know the whole story, but I will say that his character would be sorely missed should it be gone from the show.

I hope this unfortunate experience resolves well for all parties involved, especially for the writers, who seem to have a nightmarish task ahead of them.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Mr. Bernero. It was not news that was easy to read or easy to digest but I do take comfort in knowing that all this is not happening because you are holding on too tight to the purse strings. When this all hit the news I thought to myself how selfish and greedy CBS was to not give him more money. I really can remember thinking about all the hit shows they have and how much money they make each year. I felt that they were going to fire him for wanting something and now I find out that he never even asked for anything. Thank you for straightening the facts around so that we now know the truth.

I do not condone his behavior in the least bit but I do hope that Mandy's health is not the issue. It doesn't make the way he has handled this excuseable but he is a human being and I hope this just turns out to be a bad move on his part and not a health issue.

Either way my whole family has watched the show from day one. We love it. We adore Kirsten as so many others also do and we have been very impressed with the writing. My husband loves the lighting you use in the episodes. Strange I am sure to you but he comments about if frequently so I thought I would mention it.

I have sent Jill emails for the cast and crew to deliver to them and I hope our love and support in some way helps them through this difficult transition.

See you every Wednesday at 9pm!

Best wishes to Mr. Patinkin in his next project. I hope he is healthy and that his family is healthy.

Now lets forget about his leaving and be grateful for all we still have. We have a great cast. Really great. The writers and directors are awesome. We have Scott and Gina. We are so lucky. We are blessed and when all this settles and the cast, writers and crew have had time to catch up and settle in we are going to have the best season ever. If it helps I even promise to watch the commercials this season. I read that that is a current issue for tv shows. I am willing to sit through them for the good of the team.

Thank you Mr. Bernero. Greatness flows from the top. You are the top and you have shown your greatness to us in this kind deed. CBS has always been good to this blog. It is good to know now that they weren't out to screw us up by taking away one of the actors. Thank you for clarifying things for all of us. God Bless you at this difficult hour.

I have a question. I have not been to your blog before. I found it via a link. How could there ever be a reasonable excuse for not calling someone to say that they have a problem or issue and will not be showing up?

Also on the website that I found the link on it says "CBS confirmed the authenticity of the statement". Since Mr. Bernero made the statement why would CBS have to confirm it?

I am just a real big fan of the show. I am not familar with blogs. I am glad that I found this one. Very cool.

Mr. Bernero,

Thank you for this information. It was very nice of you to clarify things for us. It was fairly weird what the press was reporting.

Also, a small request please. More air time for the ladies.

I hope it's time for some humor, because I'm about drowning in angst. If this is not appropriate, please delete, but there's no need to flame, as I'll own up to writing.

There's a big singer/actor named Mandy
Whose impressive range of talent is dandy
He’s on a hit show
Which it looks like he’ll blow
But it could turn out to be handy.

Hi, Jade -- and welcome to the blog. As Jan said, we're usually a lot more cheerful. Frequently downright giddy. Not this weekend, of course, but stick around. It's hard to keep this crew down.

About authenticating Mr. Bernero's statement -- since this is not an official blog of the show or the network, but rather one run by a really exceptional fan and her able assistants, I'm sure they checked with a spokeman from the show to be sure Ed had really written the statement and authorized it for release. They don't know Jill like we do. Yet.

To all the newcomers, welcome!

Anonymous said...

My thanks as well to Mr. Bernero.

It never occured to me that we should be welcoming those new to the blog. Do come back again once all of this has finished itself out. We love newbies. Also, please feel free to ask anything you want. We aren't experts but between us we pretty much know the answer to most things.

I figure soon we will hear from Mandy and surely cbs is going to say something and then hopefully our cast and crew can find some peace. Sent you the emails to take to them Jill. Thanks once again for doing this for us.

For those suggesting David James Elliot---

I would personally love that idea - JAG was one of my absolute favorite shows - but I believe there is a problem with that suggestion. As far as I know, he is still on Close to Home, unless that got cancelled without my knowledge. If that's the case, feel free to correct me. But if not, then he still has a job.

Might I suggest someone else from JAG instead - John M. Jackson (AJ Chedwiggen). He would be of simular age to the character of Gideon and after seeing his brief stint on "Bones" as an FBI agent (Booth's boss, actually) I think he could handle the role.

If you want an actor that's a little younger (like DJE) how about Michael T. Wiess. He played Jarod on "The Pretender" back in the day. I personally think he's really talented and could do a really good job.

I love it. We are pitching names. Very cool. Do you think Scott would freak if we sent him a list? Have we heard from him since hiatus?

I add my thanks to everyone else's Mr. Bernero. We love the show.

Mr. Bernero: Thank you so much for the statement. Thank you for delivering it to fans and not some uncaring news organization. I had developed a huge amount of appreciation for TV Guide because they were really great to us during season two so when they posted on their website that this was an arguement about money and you were not going to give in and the Mandy might "lose his minds" I thought that I could trust them. I am so happy you have set the record straight and so disappointed in Mandy and TV Guide. Why post erroneous information and freak people out! The real story is bad enough. What you told us is sad and hard for us to know but it is the truth and that is so important. I am adding my apologies to those already expressed to you and the production company for everything that I was thinking.

Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Okay so nevermind, I just checked and I guess Close to Home did get cancelled. Oops. So yes, DJE would be cool. As would the others. Although I realized I misspelled Michael's last name - should be Weiss.

Hey Alex, let me give ya advice: TVGUIDE are a bunch of morons who think they know what are the best shows to watch.

Half of the time, they are wrong. So don't believe EVERYTHING those people say.

A certain critic *cough Matt Roush cough* makes it no secret that he hates our show. Thus, he constantly bashes it.

I won't be surprised if Ausiello hates the show too.

So Alex, free yourself from TVGUIDE.

I read this this weekend but wanted to wait until after the news has sunk in to comment on the blog.

WOW. 200+ comments. I think the last time we came close to that was the first airing of Ashes. I don't see any Mandy bashing going on at all though people are saying it is. I think Mr. Bernero's letter is quite clear when he says they don't know. Well then put that together with the fact the we were lied to at first by the media and still have no clue and what you get is a situation screaming for a statement.

I am sure that is what this week will bring. We will start hearing statements. Frankly unless I read them here I won't believe them. Even cnn and aol got it wrong the first time. I do want a statement. I have supported the show from day one and will always continue to do so but I was a Mandy fan first and this is not the Mandy I know or like.

Mr. Bernero: Rude of me to thank you on the bottom of the post. Excuse my bad manners. Of course we all want to send you our love and support. I hope in some small way that is conforting to you and the writers, cast and crew. We loved the show before and we still do.

Jill babe: emails coming your way from my group and from me. Thank you for agreeing to deliver them.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Mr. Bernero. Please let us know what is going to happen next. How are you going to film one more episode with him? Isn't that going to make the entire cast on edge? Haven't you already all been through enough this week without that as added pressure?

All the love and prayers of the CM Mexican group are with you!

My statement is about Jill. I would like to know why when my office contacted her for a statement she choose instead of speaking to us to send an email directing us to CBS. We wanted her statement and if we had wanted to speak with CBS then we would have contacted them to begin with. I would like to know why she refuses to speak with us. Gee, how slow do you have to be to realise it means, most likely, that she doesn't want to give a statement to you. Trust me, if she'd had something to say to you, she would've. I don't know why that is so hard for you to understand...maybe it's the multi-syllabic words? Hmm.

I would like to know why she refuses to speak with us. Perhaps this "loving group" can explain this to the media that you that you are so critical of now.

After all the BS that the media printed about this story (ie that the studio/show weren't giving MP what he wanted), you really have to ask WHY she might not want to talk to the media? Gosh, I can think of a few reasons.

You all (meaning the press) went off great guns on unconfirmed rumours about what was happening. And you wonder why the fans here are critical about the media. You need to get you head out of ... wherever it is buried.

I don't blame Jill for not talking to any of the press and I certainly don't blame anyone here for being critical.

Anonymous said...

Violet:

She has always refused to comment to the media so why are they stupid enough to think she would do so now when they have attacked our show to make a buck. Their stupidity amazes me. Frankly I would doubt they would want to print what she is thinking right now. I have never known her to hold back on what she thinks and I am guessing that since her protectiveness of the show has always been high to start with and must be even hightened now that anything she had to say would be nothing more than a fan's total statement of support and loyalty to the show. They never print positive things like that. They like dirt and dust.

Anonymous said...

I'm mystified, MR -- how could Jill *possibly* resist your charm and wit?

Anonymous said...

I don't know much about Mandy but I never would've thought he'd do something like this. I don't mean to offend his fans but unless he has a very good reason he is being highly selfish and inconsiderate of both the fans and his fellow cast members by putting the shows future in jeopardy.

Ed I'd like you to know that I love the show and will keep watching no matter what you do even if you were to write Spencer Reid out (yes I'm a gubelette).

I started watching the show because I have went to school for profiling and as I continued to watch the show I became hooked and so did my friends and family.
I am a writer and I have a column in an entertainment mag. I do know that there are about 29000 people who responded to MP leaving the show and they said they would NOT watch it without him. With that said, he makes the show! He is amazing, and I dont think the show can go on without him. When they cast the new woman (so horrible I forgot her name) to join the group, what kept me watching was MP and the storylines. I feel everyone involved in the show should do what they can to get MP back.....Thank you!

As everyone else has said - thank you Mr. Bernero for letting the fans know what is happening.

As a fan from the UK - I know my viewing habits won't effect the future of the show (I've lost several other shows I love from the US because figures in the US aren't high enough - depsite high figures and a large fan base in the UK) but I will be letting Livingtv (who show CM in the UK) know just how important a show this is for me and demanding (!) they continue to show it.

I came into CM because of the storylines - being a big fan of other shows in the genre. However, it's the quality of the writing and characters that have turned me into a true FAN of the show - and have even now sucked in my partner (which is never an easy thing to do!).

Whilst MP's character worked wonderfully as part of the ensemble - he's not the reason I tune in. If one character stood out for me it would be Reid - but whilst I would cry myself to sleep if he left (and in all honesty probably wouldn't be AS obsessed as I am with CM) - I WOULD STILL WATCH IT.

There are few shows from the US that I watch religiously or view as intelligently written and superbly acted and filmed - but CM is one of them - and I think it would be a sad day for all if it disappeared along with so many others I've loved in the past.

So much love and support to all the crew and cast of CM from the UK.

What a laugh. Only 29,000 out of the few million who watch it on a weekly basis. Can you provide a link to back up your claim? Did this survey ask about any of the other cast memebers and if people would watch IF they left? No? Then this doesn't really mean much or prove anything--other than to die hard MP fans.

As I've stated before I have faith that CM will continue on--and that it'll be better than it was before.

Hopefully you, along with the fabulous people who work on the CM set, actors, crew, producers, writers, etc. will receive some type of explanation.

As sad as this unforunate news about Mandy Patinkin leaving the show is, one character is not what makes CM great. It is the whole fabulous CM family from the cast (that we all love and support), writers (that we all have faith in), incredible producers and directors (that we know will bring us an incredible 3rd season) and the rest of the wonderful family that make CM great. We all (CM crew and fans) shall brush this dust from our shoulders, stand tall and proud supporting one another!

Tom Mosier (falconr10) said...

Thanks for the info, Lamb.....while the news was initially shocking, it makes a bit of sense to me, upon reflection.

Mandy Patinkin was really the focus of this series, at least initially....there was a back-story about his "breakdown", and whether or not he would be able to return to the team as its leader, or even function as a part of it. We were led to believe, by the writers, that if he could return, and regain his "form", that he would once again be the leader of the squad.

I never missed an episode, and I watched the writing continue to suffer (at least imho) as the series progressed. Lesser characters, such as JJ and Garcia, took on roles, over time, that rivaled (if not surpassed) Mandys face time on the show....and these supposedly (and rightfully so) "lesser" characters took on more meaty roles in the story arcs, week by week.....and then there was Spencers drug problem....which burst on the scene, rather suddenly, and dramatically.....and then just as suddenly "vanished", w/o even a tepid attempt at an explanation. All during this, Patinkins role was being reduced, and trivialized.....

Hey, the guys a GREAT, respected actor, with a solid fan base. Without him, who the heck would have even watched this show, initially?? I know that I wouldn't have.....and, as they minimized his role/involvement, I found myself liking it less and less. I have to believe that Mandy approached the creative team about his concerns, along the way...and it is quite clear that they ignored his concerns. So I, for one, am glad that he stuck it to them....and, again, imho, he is taking the high road, as far as not airing the dirty laundry publicly...

Just another in a long list of CBS execs, and show runners, not "getting it"....I was surprised that Patinkin agreed to do an ep to wrap the characters story line. I hope that the show tanks, as it should.

thanks for all the information, it is sad news but the rest of the ensemble will have no problem picking up and continuing to make a great show. i have faith in the amazing writers, producers, directors, staff and actors of criminal minds!

To Mandy

You couldn't even make a phone call? You left everybody high and dry and you couldn't even make one call? And now you are claiming "creative differences."

I'm sure working on a prime time TV show must be just devastating for you.

I bet all the nurses and EMTs and cops and teachers and everybody else who has a seriously difficult job to do and who gets paid a damn sight less than you do is really feeling your pain.

And yet they can all still show up to work because they don't want to let down the people they work with.

You are an actor and you have a job millions of people who are busting their chops day in and day out would die for. It's not rocket science, Mandy, it's not that hard.

I used to be a fan but I can't respect anybody who treats their co-workers like that.

And for those people who won't watch the show if Mandy isn't there? You will be the ones with nothing good to do on a Wednesday night. Criminal Minds is not the Jason Gideon show and it will go on and get better without him.

Anonymous said...

To Anon above, who said we needed to understand that Mandy was a complicated person, that we should wait to hear his side of the story:

Creative differences?

How about an apology to the co-workers he jerked around, and who will be busting their ass for months to make up for his "creative differences" that he couldn't be bothered to make a phone call about?

How about an apology to the fans he jerked around?

How about an apology to you, who stood up for him and was so sure there would be a good explanation?

Nope. All we get are two useless words. Creative differences.

I guess we shouldn't have expected any better.

Anonymous said...

I think "creative differences" means that the lawyers are in agreement!

And yes, we all certainly did get jerked around. I for one, hope it's over and the cast and crew can move on, as well as ourselves.

I tried to post here earlier but it was disabled. I am glad you opened it back up and I did email you.

When I read the press releases today I was so overwhelmed with how peaceful they seemed. I wanted to scream. The Network did their job and I appreciate that they had to be diplomatic but I want Mandy to have to go to each employee in that building and personally apologize to each of them. I want him to look Mr. Bernero in the face and humble himself. My heart hurts for the younger actors like Matthew and Kirsten. We can call them professionals and they are but they are young and not as experienced as the other actors. They probably have never been through something like this. How dreadful for them. Dreadful! And not necessary. And poor Paget. It took her months to become popular on the show and then a major upset happens. I just could spend all morning listing my upsets about all of this.

But, I thank the Lord that Mandy is not ill. I truly do. I hate what he did but I do not hate him. You can care about a person and still not like their behavior. I will always wish him well. I just want him to stand up and do the right thing by these people.

I hate that she speaks so badly about the people on the show and also proclaims to want to be signed on as a member. Doesn't she know we all see what floats on the internet? What garbage.

Thanks Mr. Bernero for letting us know, it's truly appreciated. I know I for one will still continue to watch CM this fall as my all-time favorite television series, even without Gideon as a team member any longer. I love the show too much, and all of the other characters too much.

WOW! This is still going on...... Amazing!..... As I read through all the comments, something occurred to me. Y'know, until CM, I never heard of Mandy Patinkin. I had to look him up on IMDB and found out the only thing I ever saw him in was "Yentil," back when he had a lot of hair. He was good in CM, but I started watching because I am fascinated by criminal psychology. The only actors on the show I ever heard of were Shemar and Tom. Those are the reasons I will still watch.
