CRIMINAL MINDS: MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER

Criminal Minds: Matthew Gray Gubler was a virtuallly unknown actor prior to starring in Criminal Minds as Dr. Spencer Reid. After two seasons on Criminal Minds he has a huge fan base. What is it that attracts you to Matthew. Is it his acting, his looks, his character on Criminal Minds, etc.?

When I first saw him on Criminal Minds I thought he was just the cutest dork and later I just realized he was a terrific actor.

I just think he is cute.

For me it was the character. I immediately fell in love with the character of Dr. Reid. I think MGG does a great job bringing that character to life.

He is so different than any other actor on tv. You have to love a really sweet nerd!

Love the man and the character. Very unique.

I think everybody loves the character because MGG makes Reid so adorkable.

And as the series has gone on, he has shown himself to be a very talented actor also.

I officially fell in love with Reid after about 4 episodes (Plain Sight) because, well, how could you not? I also thought he was really cute. As time progressed I learned more about MGG and realized just how talented and unique he is and now I love him as well. Its great to see someone with such talent constantly improve as this show has progressed.

Too much to say so I'll be as quick as possible. My husband introduced me to Reid and I fell in love with the nerd guy, shy guy. I always do. Quickly became interested in MGG and did full on internet searches to learn all I could. Fell deeper into when I discovered his hand drawn website. I always couldn't get enough of his super expressive facial features. The lip and eyebrows had me swooning. But the thing that I love the most, or loved, was his interaction with his fan base. He knew how to make every single fan feel like a million dollars.

The character of Dr. Reid is what first kept me returning to Criminal Minds before I realized what a great ensemble cast and great writing the show had going for it.

MGG - He seems a rare commodity in Hollywood - a genuine individual with a very supportive and happy family. It will be interesting to see what life brings him, and what creative choices he makes. I hope to see an MGG Production on the big screen someday.

Matthew is one of the best actors on television today. He is able to bring his character to life, communicating so much about what is going on inside Spencer Reid's head and heart. Considering the character, this is a monumental task and he does it with such subtley and perfection. He makes it easy for me to forget my world and believe in his. He has delivered powerful performances again and again. I can't believe someone so young could bring such depth and understanding to a role. He brings a lifetime of experience...and I don't mean the mere 27 years he's lived. He is fabulous beyond words.

Anonymous said...

I don't know! he just has a certain way about him that I like! He is very funny and a very unique individual! from what I take it, he could take on any task in acting!, not just any model/actor can pull off what he did in revelations and a few specific other episodes! he is a very talented person! :)

It would have been easy to play Spencer Ried as a humourless backward genius who robotically said his lines and faded into the background. Matthew brought a sense of fun and innocence to the character that made him shine even when not playing an active role in the scene. Whether it was spinning in a chair, doing magic tricks, or playing with handcuffs Matthew showed that there was more to Reid than met the eye. It also shows that there is more to Matthew than meets the eye as well... not that he is hard on the eyes. LOL

What is not to love about Matthew? There is something so special about this man, he shines, seriously shines, in everything he does.

It takes a lot to catch my attention, but Matthew's portrayal of Dr. Reid had me from the start. To bring such a character to life planted the seed there was more to this actor.

Learning about the other facets of MGG only made him more incredible and different than others in Hollywood.

Acting is not all there is to MGG, we will see him grow in so many ways and I do believe at some point there will be Matthew Gray Gubler (or Gube) productions where his is behind the camera still thrilling us.

Anonymous said...

And apparently Matthew can turn into an Mack Truck and fight Decepticons since Lizapest so lovingly turned him into a Transformer in her post. LOL. Lets just call him Optimus Primatthew! Or BumbleGube?

More Than Meets The Eye!

Lee who is really just trying to make light of it all for the MGG fans with nervous tummies today.

It was the character I was first drawn to, but without MGG's interpretation he would not have been the sympathetic 'person' he is.
The producers took a tremendous chance on casting him but how it has paid off! The young man can most certainly act, he isn't just a 'pretty face'. It will be interesting to see how he develops, as I feel sure he has a terrific future ahead of him.

I saw Fisher King II (my first ep) not long after a personal tragedy. I cannot tell you how much this quality distraction meant to me then and now. In particular, Dr. Reid grabbed my eyeballs and brain. (I will go no further.)

Dr. Reid is one of the most interesting and attractive characters on TV today, and Mr. Bernero, please, please put him in the FRONT line of that cast photo! For me, he practically makes the show.

Quentin: Dr. Reid's cute, for a human, and I'll bet he'd like collies and would make great, scientifically viable treats. MGG already has a dog, which proves that he is a high quality individual.

I think I was hooked the first time I saw Reid spinning in the chair, in the very first episode. Matthew brings such a freshness, such a reality to the character. He's not afraid to be a nerd. He's great at being not quite comfortable in his own skin.

There's a scene in "The Fox" where he has to go in and interrogate a suspect. He seems so awkward, so clumsy and lost -- and then the man tells him everything he wants to know, and it's obvious that Reid was acting that way on purpose. It was just a beautiful piece of acting (well, and writing, too.)

I love the way Reid's character has grown and changed over the first two seasons, and look forward to seeing more of it. With his new-found empathy, I wonder if he might not be the natural emotional successor to Gideon, the one the team turns to when their hearts are in trouble. It would take time for him to grow comfortable in that role, but it would be a fascinating evolution to watch.

Thanks for the pic, Jill!

At first I thought that Spencer Reid was a convenient way for writers to pass on boring information without haveing to do a research montage... After The Big Game and Revelations we saw that he was more than an encyclopedia on legs. Matthew Gray Gubler is a superb actor and I look forward to the great work I know he will do in the third season!

I first fell in love with Dr Reid. Then I saw Matthew's art, the docs and everything else and got to know there's so much behind the character. There just wouldn't be Spencer Reid if there wasn't Matthew.

He's made Reid character grow so much in the last two seasons that you can just admire that.

Reid has stolen our hearts, but the fact there is so much more to Matthew, I believe, is what holds us captive. Gubelettes love their Gube!

it's hard to find something not attracting in him, so I won't even try : HE SIMPLY MAKES THE SHOW!

I fell in love with the character of Dr. Reid in the space of one episode, although I must admit my very first impression was "what a strange-looking fellow" - which somehow transformed into "holy cow this guy is gorgeous" within about 20 minutes. Then there was this "more than meets the eye" thing going on, that made me seek out more info on Matthew Gray Gubler - and what I found totally blew my socks off! (and since that day socks refuse to go on my feet matching) Art! Films! Unauthorized Documentaries! So much awesomeness, such delightful gubishness, I could hardly believe it was real! And so, for the first time EVER in my ENTIRE LIFE I am a FAN - If TV Guide puts the tiniest little picture of him I'll buy it! I will watch the most horrible movie (and I won't say the name but it starts with "R")if he has the tiniest part in it, because I know it will shine like a diamond in the poo.

for me it was the character, love the way he does dr reid, he's the perfect cute lil' bro type that you just want to protect from the evils of the world and cuddle close^_^

I'm simply a bit sad that this amazing Matthew post had to be buried under the above unpleasantness so I am coming back in to say more delightful things about my favorite man.

1. Expressive Face

2. Effortless delivery of lines

3. Amazing artistic skills displayed on his website and some special art he did for my Gube Approved site

4. Hilarity he portrays in his Unauthorized Docs

So much good I just don't know where to begin and end.

In a word... yes :D

His loveable nerdyness.

Matthew just being Matthew is enough! Whether you are looking at his pics, watching him as Reid, watching an interview or his docs...you cannot help but smile. Not many can make complete total strangers in masses feel that good at just the sight and sound of him.
Just seeing a new picture he made makes us flock to his personal website. Friendships have been formed because of Matthew, people gather just to talk about his talents. Amazing, he's just amazing inside and out(very, very sexy).

he's hot + glasses + smart = awesome-o.

If he wasn't so
clever
gorgeous
talented
nice
good hearted
kind
amazing
funny
smart
original
interesting
intriguing
cute
sweet
lovely
full of humor
delicious
I would still consider he is the best.
But he is...
so...
HE IS THE ULTIMATE BESTEST OF ALL THE BESTITUDE OF ALL THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!

He face and his dorkyness.

First, he's simply exquisite looking. He's a gorgeous man-boy with a great mix of innocence and sensuality. Next, he's a terrific actor. Give him something dark and angsty and he will rise to the occasion. Lastly, the writers did a BRILLIANT job of crafting a character who has so much appeal, especially to woman who are, like it or not, the majority and most loyal of viewers. He didn't ask to become the break out character, but like those who have gone before him, viewers, not producers decide those things.

All of it. He is perfect!

Wow, being late to the Gube-appreciation party makes it extremely difficult to add to the already heartfelt and insightful comments made by everyone. It's almost all been so eloquently said by everyone, that Matthew's talents, grace, charm, and magnaminous spirit has captivated us all on almost the first sight. He has done a wonderful job of creating and enhabiting the complete persona of Reid. By adding little quirks and subtle facial expressions, he has endeared us to the complex character of Reid and still make it look so efffortless. I join the others in applauding such an unique and appealing actor. I'm looking forward to more outstanding performances before and behind the camera as I am sure Matthew will continue to amaze us with his unlimited talents.

..well this time I'm the last one to the party!

I have to agree with everything that's been said. the first ep of CM I saw was actually a season 2 episode, can't remember which one, but this dorky looking guy was filling my tv screen, and that was it! I watched more episodes of the show...partly because I love the show, but mostly because the dorky guy had my attention! I also did a net search to find out more, discovered his web page, fell in love with the art work which I find so inspiring, wonderfully quirky, fun, and just down right fantastic ( I will own an MGG original before I leave this world!!!)

He may have been thrown into the limelight quite unintentionally (he wanted to direct rather than act!), but I for one am so glad that it happened that way. I'm sure now his success in front of the camera will pave the way to great success behind it, so we'll have Gube projects to look forward to in the future..... however, I'd like to think that he'd stay in acting til he's at least...erm.....90! :-)

BTW, I don't think my husband shares my enthusiasm for the dorky guy, but hey....

MGG is simply the best! He has made Dr. Spencer Reid, simply my favorite character on tv - he plays the character with such class and thanks to the wonderful writers has been able to show his wide range in handling the character and the various situations which have been thrown at him as of late - again...simply amazing!!

His YouTube documentaries, and therefore his sense of humor. I always liked CM, which is why I saw him on YouTube. I just never saw him the way I do now. Very funny with an awesome smile :)

I agree with the cutest dork..I think he puts some sort of charisma into the character that he is acting... which I think cannot be brought out by someone else other than himself.
So two thumbs up to Matthew...!

Uh, this is sorta shallow, but I was blipping around on the TV at my aunt's house, recognized the show's title vaguely and watched an episode. It was the Revelation's pair, and I just immediatly fell madly in love with his character. He's a really good actor!

Anonymous said...

I feel a lot of empathy for the Dr Reid character. Smart but awkward, not really understanding how to "fit in" (learning not to spout facts and figures was a biggie... just because I know it, it isn't always a good idea to say it), that's me... the brainiac. It is a lot less attractive to be a female geek, though. And having multiple degrees doesn't help me feel camraderie with others even in the scientific community. It is nice to have an hour to escape to a fantasy world where being odd and weird doesn't mean that you're automatically ostracized. I also appreciate MGG's whacky sense of humor. I'm in the process of researching a treatment for several forms of blindness, but I think my goal should be to die laughing! I'll probably get more done in the lab with that attitude anyway. So in short, the character and the actor are bright spots during my time stuck in the white tower of academic research science.

Dr. Kris said...

His documentaries show he has an excellent sense of humor and does not take himself too seriously. I also appreciate the depth his character has, and from the little that I have seen from his internet presence, it appears that the actor is quite different from the character, which means he is good at this craft!

Anonymous said...

Everything about him is attractive. His ability and his looks. He made a fan of me within 2 episodes.

Anonymous said...

MGG has a scren presence that is different then any other I have seen in a long time. He is different and that is why I like him so much.

Tai said...

I'm not quite sure what it is, but I can't help but want to see an episode with Dr. Spencer Reid and his quirky commentaries. MGG really makes his character interesting!!

For me, and I really don't want this to come off sounding arrogant, I have a problem with that, he was one of the only characters on television I could relate to. I've always been quite a bit more intelligent than the people around me, including my parents, and always had trouble with understanding that they wetrent' as smart as me. It was uncomfortable in school when I finished the book while everyone was on the first chapter and the teacher yelled at me for "not participating".

This has made me into a sort of loner and "socially impotent" if you will. I don't like parties, can't talk, or relate, to people, and have trouble even going to the store without getting nervous.

It was nice to have a character similar to me (though loads more intelligent) that I could relate to, albeit through a television screen and not real life).

Now I just wish that people like that in real life were actually that good looking.

He just has the greatest tone when delivering lines. He is clever, not just acting clever. He makes the character real. I actually believe himwhen he is talking about statitics and theories.

I have been captivated by Matthew because he looks so much like my brother Dave did in high school back in the 70s. He has the same type of personality too. Dave is a non con-formist with a doctors degree in physics. Being brilliant can be lonely. Matthew brings me back in memory and reminds me how much I love my brother. Now, for my other brother; he is a slim version of Vincent D'Onofrio on Criminal Intent. Someone stole my family photos!

I adore his character. Spencer is so awkward, it's so cute. Such a dork.
He's not bad looking either.

What first drew me to Matthew Gray Gubler was of course his looks. He had a wierd quirky look and i love that. Then i've found myself intrigued to learn more. When i found out that Matthew Gray doesn't match his socks because his grandma told him it was good luck to have unmatching socks I laughed to myself because my grandma always told me the same thing and my socks haven't matched since my mom was dressing me as a baby. Even when i was a toddler i would take off my socks if they matched and go barefoot so my mom tried putting unmatching socks on me and i left them so that's how it all began. I've never mat anyone in my life who did the same thing. All of my friends tease me because of my eccentric unmatching socks and to find someone who does the same is odd to me and thats what really attracts me to him. well besides the fact that he's totally cute.

I empathise and can identify with Reid's social awkwardness the and isolation that comes from being so much smarter than everyone and not having a 'normal' childhood. Everytime he does something brilliant, quirky or brave I cheer him on. When he suffers or struggles, seeing him endure and triumph makes me want to be a better person.
I love the physicality that MGG gives to Reid. Especially the 'tucked-in arms and folded wrists thing' Reid gets when really stressed that hints at a borderline mental condition.
I didn't see it at first but he is also really cute in a way that makes me feel both aroused and maternal.
