CRIMINAL MINDS: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HOTCHNER?

Criminal Minds: What do you think of Aaron Hotchner portrayed by Thomas Gibson, pictured above on the streets of New York where he is promoting Criminal Minds?

Some characters are larger than life; they eplode onto your screen (or on a page) and blow you away. This one isn't and that's what makes him so special. Fallible and human, controlled but passionate, damaged and strong. What a shade of grey he is. I don't know how the actor does it (but god he does!) - it must be like walking on a tightrope. One false step and he could fall. He draws you into his darkness and into this walk so you'll know how easy it is to fall, to lose it, and just how hard it is to continue walking, to the end.

Check out Tabula Rasa and you will see what Hotch is to the BAU & CM, this is one kick arse guy here , kick arse profiler & one hell of a boss, hell I would have him as my boss any day of the week.

Hotch IS Criminal Minds no question about that, which is why it has been hard to see him sidelined so much this season. I started watching CM for the stories, got captivated by the characters and the dynamic of these characters & most especially Hotch who keeps me coming back each week.

And I can’t not mention TG who I have grown to admire in the processed (not that I didn’t already), and has steadily become an obsession together with CM, he is one hell of an actor & human being, his presence, humility and integrity shines like a beacon & his versatility and amazing talent makes him an absolute standout in this industry.

Hotch is Criminal Minds. And Hotch is the best because Thomas Gibson!

OT, kind of, but i wanted to say something (couldn't see where else i could actually) about the recent deluge of interviews with TG. Although i love his take on things and enjoy the fun and frolick (and he is adorable), but i'm kinda bored with the questions he gets asked. What will it be next - his fave colour? I crave a serious q&a session, a long one, and a deep, introspective one. I get it that he seems to shy away from speaking about his private life and of course that is none of my business, but i would love an interaction that involved a discussion of his craft, how he prepared for the role, books he found interesting (and why!), etc. I'm sure he would have things to say about that. He is such a great actor and comes across as a really intelligent man - wonder why he gets so many silly questions. And seriously, can't they find better scenes from CM? or are they not allowed to show scenes from Seasons 3, 4 or 5 now? You know the ones i mean :-)

Anonymous I can’t say I don’t agree with you …He is such an interesting man that I’m sure he would have so much more to talk about if they just scratched below the surface and you are quite right it doesn’t have to get personal. He has so many experiences from his work to date that I’m sure there is a mountain of material they could cover if they wanted to.

I have to say though that I’m absolutely loving the attention Thomas Gibson is getting at the moment and the show for that matter, granted I live outside the US so I don’t see a lot of the propaganda wheel if you like, but from the avenues available to me and from what I’ve been able to glean over the past few years I’m pretty sure I’d be right to say that CBS has not really pushed and/or supported Criminal Minds as much as they have their other shows, so I guess I’m looking at all this publicity both for Thomas & the show as a good thing.

Hey Thomas Gibson as Criminal Minds spokesperson certainly works for me, I just hope that they are not pulling a fast one on the fans!

I’d imagine in the background there is that little matter of contract negotiations happening, that said all the attention that Thomas is getting at the moment I’m hoping has to do with CBS finally seeing the light both with regard to what an amazing asset they have in Thomas and also this show, so I’m hoping this means good things for Thomas & Criminal Minds especially after all the turmoil the show has suffered recently.

Well one can hope can’t they!!

HollyM,

How do i name myself here? sorry, technically challenged :-S

There is no way anyone can hope to figure out how things work in that weird weird world. But yes i shall be optimistic. Have you read the 27th Feb NYT article about two and a half dunces? it's tragic. so well, we shall see. the world feels all wrong to me.

Re the interviews - if i hear that LA and job line again, Gibson, I'm coming right at you (arrrghhhh, 4 times over the last 4 interviews. Although i have to admit that he probably says it because he thinks the same demented person wouldn't be watching ALL of his interviews over the span of a day. LOL).

BTW, on the Early Show and the WWS, he was looking like a delish cup of coffee :-) i was telling my hubs and friends yesterday that they shouldn't try to rename him Hot-ner. They should just take the word 'hot' out of the dictionary and replace it with 'hotch'. 'selling like hotch cakes', 'it's getting hotch in here', 'thomas, you're smoking hotch'. works, don't you think? ha ha

^ LOL … I hear you … most certainly delish ;o)

To name yourself, select the Name/URL and simply type in your name or whatever you want to call yourself in the ‘Name’ box and post …

Oh btw I forgot to add that I haven't read the NYT article ... not from the US although the two and a half dunces if I get your drift has been covered in the press here, possibly not to the extent of cover over in the US though!!

Anonymous, most of those little press junkets are pretty generic regardless of who the actor is and they all seem to stick to a pretty standard set of questions, which if I had to guess involved whatever they could find out about him when they googled him. I thought the clips they were showing were clips from tonight's episode and that's why they were showing those particular clips.

If you want to get a closer look at the man/actor you should participate in the chats he does. He's a bit more forthcoming in the somewhat private setting, but even in there he does shy away from discussing his craft. He doesn't seem to like talking about the processes he goes through to prepare for a role or a scene. He does talk about other things pretty freely though including his favorite books, food, music, etc.

That's genius. Pure genius. 'I like my pizza hotch better than cold', 'this chily is too Hotch for me', 'Hotch is darn Hotch' LoL

On another note, it's really to bad TG doesn't seem to like to talk about his acting process. I can understand if he doesn't want to share private things and I greatly respect that. But talking about his take on his job, the roles, his acting techniques ... That would really be interesting. I hope he comes forward with something like that eventually.

I have to agree with HollyM about the fact that it is wonderful that Thomas Gibson has been the media face of Criminal Minds lately. It is well-deserved attention for him and the series.

Gibson is a great ambassador for CBS and CM compared to the egotistical, obnoxious Charlie Sheen whom CBS created, sponsored and enabled for so long.

I hope these press junkets are recognition of TG's position on CM, and TPTB's desire to reward him for a job well done by giving him a contract worthy of his commitment and contribution to CM over the years.

Hotch is an invaluable character and without him, CM would not last. No TG, No CM for Me

Thank you, HollyM. I have now been named :-)
sf81387, thank you, too! I'm not from the US either; so synching my waking hours with yours would be tough. but i'll try of course. the rule book for the chats, though, scared me off. 'what not to do - a thousand and one things that would get you off the chat before you can say hotch.' I would feel i was looking straight at SSA H's Glock .
Maybe acting comes so naturally to him, he doesn't know what to say about it. We know from the gag reels that he can switch between being himself and being Hotch in a second. So who knows.
I began my day (in this part of the world) with a cup of strong, black, hotch coffee (with a hint of sugah). Just watching The Tribe. God bless thee, Aaron Hotchner (and Reid, Prentiss, Rossi, JJ, Garcia and Morgan!). Did i miss anyone? lol

Love Hotch!

You are very welcome Eleven … glad I could help, yeah that switch is quite amazing and we all know what an amazing actor he really is, and yeah maybe it does come naturally, which I guess points to his versatility.

LOL on the hotch coffee … I’m just about to get myself a hotch cup of tea to get me through what is likely to be a long night …& yes I do have some CM / Hotch time planned in there somewhere … new episode should be up by now!

And sdwally … totally with you …..Hotch is an invaluable character and without him, CM would not last. No TG, No CM for Me

if he ever leaves there would be no team and no show, i love his strength

TG is the reason I sstarted watching when CM began, even though it is usually a little too disturbing for me. The team makes the show, but I really LOVE him. We need to see more of him, especially scenes with Jack. So sweet!

I just love Hotch. Hard at work and he seems a wonderful father.

I love most of the team. Loosing Hotch, Morgan or Reid or Rossy in this show would be a blow to my listening.

I simply think Gibson can play what he wants.

TG is simply an amazing actor. He has had very little screentime this season, which is criminal in itself, yet this past week was a perfect example of how he managed to deliver a great performance to make his presence felt. THAT is what TG & Hotch bring to CM and if that presence is no longer there, the strength and rock disappear. The actor needs a new, better contract after so many emmy-ignored but nevertheless emmy-worthy performances, and the character needs more airtime and respect. No tg, not worth watching cm anymore.

I just came here to breathe - all the comments everywhere else are on Seaver. I am rewatching Season 3 now - Damaged is going to be dessert tonight. Nice :-)

I love Thomas Gibson's character of SSA Aaron Hotchner. Mr. Gibson is a fantastic actor!

I'm very disappointed with all the changes CBS has made with the cast in the past few months but if Thomas Gibson ever leaves, I will never watch Criminal Minds again.

I know this is a Hotch thread, but I don't really know where else to put this, since the thread for "Lauren" isn't up yet. I am kind of dreading next episode. Prentiss is my second favorite character (tied with Reid). It hurts to imagine not seeing her around anymore. Seeing the credits without her for the first time ... I will be in shambles. Although I had the gut feeling that Paget has left for good, I still had this tiny little flame of hope she'd come back for season 7. But reading that she has got a pilot now seems to make it final. I am a bit heartbroken about it, although of course I'm happy for Paget and wish her all the best.

With the lack of quality writing lately, the only reason for me to watch CM at the moment is Hotch, but unfortunately Hotch isn't really around much either, and when he is, he's OOC quite often. Hotch and Prentiss always had a very good working relationship and good onscreen chemistry, IMO (non-shippy!!!) and I think they dropped the ball completely by leaving Hotch out of the Prentiss story-arc so much. Therefore, at the moment, I consider stop watching CM after "Lauren". I'm torn. Maybe I can hope we'll see more Hotch again when we are one agent down and the Prentiss arc is completed? But one thing is clear: No Hotch/TG, no CM for me.

I agree that Hotchner cannot be played by anyone other than Thomas Gibson. He is the glue that holds this show together. It is frustrating enough to lose AJ Cook and Paget Brewster. I hope they leave well enough alone.
