We talked about it at brunch and everyone was thrilled with the news of Joe Mantegna joining the cast. We all knew just a little bit about him but we talked about it all and it seems that this man is quite accomplished.

There is a lot of talk amongst the press now that he was not one of your first picks. I am truly hoping that they are wrong. I have always enjoyed his acting ability. I hope that he is truly who you wanted and that they are wrong.
We love Joe Mantegna and are pleased as punch.
I think we needed something positive to talk about. Since Mandy left it has been a difficult time to be a fan of the show. I only started watching because of him. I think that is true for many of us. I am still in shock that he left.

I like the show and always have. I will continue to watch it as long as the stories remain good and the cast remains faithful to their characters. I do thank Mr. Bernero. I have no idea who this newest actor is but I didn't know who Matthew Gray Gubler was before this show and now I love him. So new is okay with me. If things get dicey then have Shemar tackle a car again topless. That is really a cure to keep in your bag of tricks for anything else bad that comes your way Mr. Bernero.

This has been a very good weekend for Criminal Minds fans. Great news which puts an end to the shoulda, coulda, whosea business. Hell of a month this has been. One star loses his mind and walks away without so much as a thank you. A month of speculation as to who or if someone should or will replace him. A new wonderful star is hired. That is a lot of stuff for one month.
The end result of the month is that the show is still standing, the fans, thanks to Ed Bernero, are more loyal than ever, we have a great new star and the new season is slowly coming closer.

I'm sorry but I also worry that they needed a larger star to take Mandy's place. Mantegna is a fine actor but where is his staying power?

And as for people stopping watching in a huff because of a character coming or going - I find that a bit strange. I watch a show because I like it - I will have favourite characters, but I tend to watch a show I like unless it stops interesting me. And only then do I stop bothering to tune in. Good writing and a good ensemble cast are what make a show like Criminal Minds.
I'm honestly not that familiar with Joe Mantegna, but I'm kind of worried that they're trying to replace Gideon's character instead of creating someone entirely new. That being said, I have a feeling the folks at Criminal Minds know a lot more about the show than I do, and are doing what's best for it. I'm excited (especially after what everyone here has posted) to see how the new character plays out!
If the only reason someone watched "Criminal Minds" was to see MP then I think they were wasting their time. The show is incredible because the entire cast is incredible. The stories are intense and interesting. We have a new actor joining us and that seems like a great thing to me.
You can still be a Mandy Patinkin fan and watch the show.It's not a matter of being disloyal or something. You can have your cake and eat it too as my mum would say.

Spice is life and hey the guy is Italian so he has my vote already.
Season Three is right around the corner. We have the leftover episode from last year and several without Mandy before we see Joe. I am thrilled to have a replacement named and I think they did a great job.

Your choice put a smile on granny Joyce's face and we love her so double thanks for the news and for that. I think this was a very well thought out choice. I think "Fat Tony" is going to be great for the show. There is no mention of him being a diva anywhere on the internet. Well done Ed.

The cast is now wonderfully diverse and loaded with experience. The show is going to be even better than before. I just know it.

I just have to ask this after reading some of the comments here. Did anyone actually think Mandy was ever going to stick with the show for 6 years? I mean no way that was ever going to happen. Really people. If you aren't going to watch the show because he left then go for goodness sakes. We don't need you.
Thanks for the surprising but good news Ed. I'm so ready for the new season and so sorry that you had to go through so much. That all of you had to go through it. I'm glad that it worked out with us getting an even better actor.

Joan of Arcadia was a really good show. I hated that it was canceled after just a few seasons. This is going to be a really good thing.

Ed, When you make news you sure do make news. This thread is so long I am just going to break it down:
A. I think the choice of Joe Mantegna is genius. He is well known but mega starrish.
B. I am amazed that after this month people are still wanting Mandy back. How hard do you need to be slapped in the face before it stings you? The man has no shame. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
C. To declare that the show is going to fold without him is short sided and ridiculous. This is an ensemble cast.
D. To moan because your favorite star hopeful wasn't picked is beyond words. Were you prepared to pay that person's paycheck?
E. Criminal Minds is exactly what it was a month ago before the royal diva slinked out on his belly. It is a show based on writing and execution and that has not changed.
F. The press sucks so why even bother writing about it. They hate the show and always have.
G. Ed, you are so rare a person that I have no words except thank you.
H. Jill, I feel for you because I bet your email in box is full and getting worse. You are doing a great job.
I don't have very much to say. I hope that he fits in well with the cast and that he is easy to work with. He obviously has enormous experience which a huge plus.
Best of luck to Mr. Mantegna on his new career move. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us. He gets to be on an established premier show and we get a new character. I am counting the days till S3 starts.
