Uk viewer, thanks for your insights and the respectful way in which you share them. Personally, I do not feel that there is that level of depth in the character that you suggest. In my opinion, her other scenes cancel out your suggestion. Most important, for me, is that I will never accept or respect the fact of how she entered into the BAU. Her first case she was asked to function as a consultant which ending up going nowhere except her disobeying a direct order and placing the lives of others and herself in danger. Second episode, they set her coming back into the team to complete her remedial training because she felt bad about her performance in the previous episode. There is no Hotch in this episode, so we are told that he agrees to her coming back in despite numerous times saying in her first episode that she was theer only for that one case, and only as a consultant. The end was Hotch railing on her for disobeying his order and basically. The third episode she is there yet again, but this time, they have her giving part of the profile to the police with the team. It went from consultant, to feeling bad about her first performance, to now doing something that her character simply does not have the experience or qualifications to do so.

Bottom line, my issue with this character, an issue that will always be there no matter how long she appears on the show, or how much Rossi or any other of the team "mentors" her, is that I simply cannot and will not ever respect the way that she entered into the BAU. It has been said time and again, the BAU is not a training camp. It is a unit of people who have the expertise to be able to function together to create profiles of serial killers and other types of predators. For the grand majority of the team, they came in with both the experience and the expertise to be able to do so. Reid was the one exception to the experience rule, and boy, is he ever an exception. What makes Reid stand out and cause others to accept his exemption into the team is the genius that has wowed viewers from the beginning. It would take me several posts to highlight just how unique and rare his type of genius is and just how greatly it has served and contributed to the team. Reid has read all of the textbooks, and being that he can read 20,000 words a minute, he probably read them all in one day. Reid is an invaluable asset to the team and from day one the writers went through great lengths to show how special, unique, and invaluable Reid is to the BAU, and quite honestly, any place Reid would end up at. The same is not true of Seaver. Seaver could leave tomorrow and no impact will have been made to the team with her loss because she is so junior and does not have any of the experience, qualifications, or unique and rare qualities that Reid has. If Reid, who was exempted into the team were to leave, that would be felt by the team because they rely on the insight and expertise that comes with his genius, this is why it was so critical that Gideon tapped Reid for the team and brought him in. Reid, despite his lack of experience at the time, was more than worthy of a spot on a team that needs the best minds to work together to create profiles. I have always respected Dr. Spencer Reid because his entry into the team was not forced (the first episode Hotch and Rossi didn't evene want Seaver to accompany them, they just wanted ti get information from her for them to use, but she insisted on going along, again, resulting in nothing), his presence there has always made sense, and he is someone that cannot be replaced by just anyone, again, reinforcing why an effort would be made to cut some red tape to get him onto the team.

Part 2

Agents fight tooth and nail to get on this team, and for good reason because it is reserved for the highly skilled, highly experienced, or in Reid's case back when he joined with no experience, the unusually intelligent. The BAU is a distinguished place to be and I personally feel that Seaver is bringing down that prestige because she simply does not live up to that prestige, not in experience, not in experise, nor in the type of intelligence that Reid possesses. Because of this and the way she has entered onto the team, I cannot respect her presence there and for me respect is paramount. I could feel lukewarm about a character, even not like a character, but if I don't respect a character, then the character for me does not stand a chance. Above all, I must be able to respect.

Evelyn, what you say about respect is really important. I agree with that. Even where it's negative respect (as with some of the truly striking unsubs) there's still a fundamental impulse you feel to accept some characters. Is it possible in the future that Seaver could earn respect from you even though she has had a beginning that you don't feel worthy?

It is kind of weird. You're right. She wasn't supposed to go along on that first 'consultation' but she knew she didn't have an abstract knowledge to impart. Reid probably could have spoken at chapters-length in her place. But she knew she would have to see the thing in order to know its significance, like the collie in church, or the way she quickly knew the father was the unsub once she was in the house, able to feel what was going on back and forth between the man and his daughter. So she turned up almost accidentally and hasn't left! Hah! It's like that puppy she wasn't allowed to keep except that she's it. In a way, Emily's departure not only creates a space for her but makes it more likely that the team will want her to stay. They'll want to protect her because they couldn't protect Prentiss.

I have an issue with that as well UK viewer. The women on this show have always shown a level of strength and commanding presence that would never warrant a comparison of one of a lost puppy that has never left. Garcia has her sensitivities, but she is not a field agent. Her strength is as the computer expert and in that realm she is stronger than I think most people give her credit for; the men do not need to protect her in this realm. JJ, when she was on the show, always demonstrated that she could handle the unbeliveable pressures of her job as well as the pressure of being on the field. In several episodes, when some of the men were trying to act overprotective of her, she quickly said that she did not need protecting, that she knew how to, and could protect herself, and she always proved that to be true. Prentiss, I don't even think I need to get into Prentiss. She was just all around experience, expertise, and no one needed to hold her hand for any reason. These women I can, and do respect, not someone who, yet again because of some sad circumstance (first being that she felt bad, and they felt bad, about her performance in her first episode so they let her back in the BAU) will now stay because they feel the need to protect her.

What I outlined before, and now this suggestion by you that they may want her there to protect her, are not things that will garner any respect from me for her character.
