‘Criminal Minds’ gets Super boost
By Bridget Byrne THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LONG BEACH, Calif.— The team from “Criminal Minds” is attempting to build a profile of an unknown suspect who must be stopped before he commits more heinous crimes.
Gathered around a desk, the elite FBI squad’s brains buzz and leap, their words flowing with clever ideas as they watch Web video and listen to a 911 call.
“We may be asking the wrong question,” interjects team leader Jason Gideon, cutting into the combined thought processes of agents Aaron Hotchner, Emily Prentiss, Derek Morgan, Dr. Spencer Reid, and Jennifer “JJ” Jareau.
The disparate team, headed by Mandy Patinkin’s Gideon, a brilliant behaviorist, also includes computer whiz and fashion freak Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness). Her appeal, coupled with the public’s fascination with murder, mayhem and serial killers, has made the CBS series a smash hit in its second season.
The show’s regular time slot is Wednesdays at 9 p.m. But the network is giving the series an added push, airing an episode titled “The Big Game” in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot on Sunday.
“It’s completely shocking, because I had no idea anyone was considering us (for the slot). It’s the most incredible opportunity I’ve ever had. I’m also a Chicago Bears fan, so it may be the greatest single day of my life,” enthuses executive producer Ed Bernero.
Although most of the cast registers some degree of excitement about the high-profile air date, Bernero stresses the special episode won’t differ too much from the norm.
He defines that norm as “telling stories that are Arthurian in nature. ... We have someone in distress, a team meets at a round table, is called to adventure, and goes out to battle monsters.”
The monster on this episode appears to be someone who is streaming viral video of a ghastly crime. James Van Der Beek (once Dawson Leery of “Dawson’s Creek”) is the guest villain. Or so it appears.
“Criminal Minds” is very clever with its multiple themes and plot twists, so he could turn out to be not at all what he seems, or even just a red herring in the story line about the murder of a wealthy couple after a Super Bowl party.
For a series that often deals in gruesome gore, there’s considerable levity on the set.
Shermar Moore, the ensemble’s glamor guy who portrays Morgan, finds plenty of time to do his flirtatious thing as the ensemble teases each other through the numerous takes needed when pre-produced video and computer imagery are woven into a scene.

CRIMINAL MINDS: AFTER ELLE & BEFORE PRENTISS
Criminal Minds: If we had to lose the character of Elle Greenaway, played by Lola Glaudini, then I wish we had just kept the cast like it is in this picture. We would have been fine with just Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), J.J. (A.J. Cook) and Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan).
CRIMINAL MINDS: KIRSTEN'S THEATER PIC
I would love to see Kirsten Vangsness in a theater production. It would be interesting to see her perform as a different character than Penelope Garcia in Criminal Minds. I bet she would be great. She is certainly great as Garcia. :)

'Criminal' following Super Bowl
CBS' FBI show already a hit
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDERAfter the Bears maul the Colts (or vice versa) on Feb. 4, CBS hopes viewers will be up to see a little more blood spilt.
Eye execs unexpectedly chose rising drama "Criminal Minds" -- starring Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson as FBI agents tracking twisted murderers -- to lead out of this year's Super Bowl XLI telecast.
The decision startled some, as "Minds" is already a hit, and midlevel ratings performers like the young-adult laffer "How I Met Your Mother" could have used the Nielsen boost.
Also making it an unlikely Super Bowl lead-out: "Minds" doesn't attract as broad a crowd as the last show that CBS ran behind the big game, "Survivor" three years ago.
Are half-drunk football fans stuffed with onion dip and cocktail weenies prepared to stick around to see Patinkin hunting down a serial killer?
"I was a little surprised," says one rival network scheduling exec of CBS' move.
But the minds at the Eye have big things in mind for "Minds." By placing the show behind the Super Bowl, CBS hopes to propel it from strong ratings player to megahitdom. It's also a pretty safe bet, and one that will reap the net significant coin.
"The momentum behind 'Criminal Minds' is inescapable," says Kelly Kahl, CBS senior exec VP for programming operations. "It's a show we could propel to new heights by doing this."
The broadcast webs have become more strategic than ever when it comes to the post-Super Bowl spot.
"As shares have declined in TV but the Super Bowl has held up, that's a spot that has become more precious," Kahl says. "A 45 rating the Super Bowl was doing wasn't as a big a deal when the networks were doing that rating all of the time. But it's gained in importance as a vehicle as time has gone on."
Before 1983, the nets didn't pay much attention to the post-Super Bowl slot, running episodes of "60 Minutes," movies and even golf tournaments. (Earlier kickoffs also meant the game sometimes ended before primetime even began.)
Then came "The A-Team." Mr. T and company bowed after Super Bowl XVII to solid ratings, turning that show into an instant phenom.
Pity the fools who tried to repeat that success. For most of the 1980s and early '90s, the nets tried to launch more new shows behind the game, but that strategy flopped ("Extreme," "Davis Rules," "Grand Slam") more often than it succeeded ("The Wonder Years").
In the late '90s and early 2000s, the webs switched gears and went for the big ratings with special episodes of "Friends," "The X-Files," "Third Rock From the Sun" and "Survivor."
But those shows were already big enough hits that the Super Bowl shot was more of a gimmick than a programming decision with lasting impact.
That all changed again last year. With "Grey's Anatomy" emerging as a sophomore sensation for ABC, the Alphabet web scheduled part one of a special two-part episode behind the pigskin classic.
The result was the stuff of McDreams. The showcase timeslot (which, conveniently, was the skein's normal Sunday night home) propelled "Grey's Anatomy" into the rarefied world of TV's supernovas. The push eventually allowed ABC to move the show to Thursday last fall.
"That's what changed it from being the show that followed 'Desperate Housewives' to being a hit in its own right," says Jeff Bader, ABC exec veep of programming and scheduling.
The gambit worked so well that Bader says ABC flirted with airing another post-Super Bowl episode of "Grey's Anatomy" this year, even though the game isn't even on the net.
Across town, CBS took notes. Like last year's "Grey's Anatomy" strategy, the post-Super Bowl episode of "Criminal Minds" is actually part one of a two-hour mini-event; part two airs three days later in the show's normal slot.
"We'd be crazy not to see what it did for 'Grey's' last year," Kahl says. "It took a hot show and made it even hotter."
The "Minds" move wasn't made without heated internal debate. CBS execs were divided into camps pushing for "Minds" vs. "How I Met Your Mother." (Other possibilities, including "Survivor" and even newcomer "Rules of Engagement," were briefly considered as well.)
In the end, CBS supremo Leslie Moonves lent his support to "Minds."
Eye also has a reason to give "Minds" an extra bit of oomph: The show is preparing to do battle in a ratings war zone opposite the Wednesday results-show edition of Fox's "American Idol."
"I think it's the smart thing to do," Bader says. "'Criminal Minds' is doing well, but their goal is to turn it into a top-10 hit."
Also, there's security in putting "Criminal Minds" there. Already a hit, "Minds" is sure to deliver a boffo number -- pleasing the net and advertisers in the process. A lesser-known commodity could send post-Super Bowl viewers flipping.
As for "Mother," the laffer will likely still get a residual bump, as it airs in its regular Monday spot the following night.
Meanwhile, Bader notes another change this year: Rather than counterprogram the Super Bowl with femme-centric fare (think Julia Roberts movies), ABC and Fox are going after stray young men.
ABC has slated the Will Ferrell feature "Old School" at 9 p.m., while Fox is showcasing "X2: X-Men United." Bader says the Ferrell movie is broad enough and could perhaps grab a portion of the suddenly available Super Bowl aud if the game runs short.
"We decided to go broad and funny," he says.

MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER FOR JAN.
Dedicated to Jan who loves Dr. Spencer Reid and/or Matthew Gray Gubler.
THOMAS GIBSON AS DR. NYLAND IN "CHICAGO HOPE"
Dedicated to Stacy who really needs to see Thomas Gibson in "Chicago Hope". His charcter, Dr. Nyland, was so different than the character of Aaron Hotchner. He was wild and had sex with anything that would stand still long enough. It is strange to think back to the days when I watched Mandy and Thomas on "Chicago Hope" while I am actively focused now on Criminal Minds. Such different characters and shows.

CRIMINAL MINDS: KIRSTEN VANGSNESS ARTICLE
THE COPYING OF PICTURES FROM THIS BLOG IS EXPRESSLY FORBIDDEN.
Remembering her roots
By Aaron Burgin, The Porterville Recorder
Kirsten Vangsness said she always remembers where she came from.
For Vangsness, a star on the hit CBS drama “Criminal Minds,” those memories take her back to the streets of Porterville - even though Porterville is noticeably omitted from her agency-prepared biography.
“When people ask me where I'm from, I always say Porterville,” said Vangsness, who plays “tech kitten” analyst Penelope Garcia on the FBI drama. “When they ask me, ‘Where is that?' I say, ‘It's in the Central Valley, near Bakersfield, not too far from Terra Bella.' ”
“Then they say, ‘Terra who-a?' ” Vangsness said with a laugh. “But, seriously, I need them to change [the biography], because everyone will tell you that I always talk about my days growing up in Porterville.”
Vangsness tells her Los Angeles friends - many who couldn't point out Porterville on a map of the greater Porterville area - that “it's the place with the Jackass Mail Run, that is known for its state hospital.”
But to Vangsness, Porterville is the place she found her muse.
“I think I knew I was going to be an actress when my fifth-grade teacher chose me to play the lead in our play ‘Santa Claus goes Mod,' ” Vangsness said. “But, a lot of people thought they were actresses, so I was pretty convinced I was gonna live on cat food for the rest of my life.”
The 30-year-old nostalgically talked about seventh-grade drama teacher Shirley Hughes, Veterans Day parades on Main Street and extra roles in plays at the Barn Theater.
Vangsness said she lived “literally behind the Main Street on-ramp of Highway 190, next to Anderson Fence Company, a stone's throw from Porterville College.”
A self-proclaimed “weird kid,” Vangsness said she was that kid that didn't fit in any of the campus cliques.
“I was the kid that got trash-canned,” Vangsness said, laughing.
She's not getting trash-canned anymore - she plays the off-beat, eccentrically quirky FBI analyst in television's ninth-highest-rated prime-time television program, a role that closely mirrors her own personality.
And she gets to playfully flirt with arguably one of Hollywood's heartthrobs, Shemar Moore.
“And believe me, he is cuter in person,” Vangsness said.
But success was not promised for Vangsness. After leaving Porterville before her eighth-grade year, her family moved to Cerritos, where she attended high school and junior college. She graduated from California State University, Fullerton.
By March 2005, though her biography paints the picture of a highly successful and critically acclaimed stage actress, Vangsness herself said she was “living the life of a starving artist.”
She had three jobs - a substitute teacher, personal assistant and actress.
“Work wasn't regular, and I wasn't getting paid regularly,” Vangsness said. “I was doing a couple of commercials, but so was everyone else in Los Angeles.”
She quit her personal assistant job to pursue an audition for a pilot, which she didn't get - they said they wanted an Alfre-Woodard type, Vangsness said.
It was then she got a call from a friend who told her about a role for a scene in another pilot, Vangsness said.
“She pretty much told me I wasn't going to get the part, but I said, ‘Sure,' ” Vangsness said.
One week later, she got a call from her friend.
“And she's like, you got the job,” Vangsness said.
She filmed the one scene in Canada, by herself. The scene - talking to a mystery voice on the other end of a phone line.
The next thing she knew, the show - “Criminal Minds” - gets picked up by the network, and she is asked to come back for another episode, and another episode, and - you get the picture, Vangsness said.
Her recurring role caught on with viewers, and when word got out that Vangsness was going to another audition, the producers offered her a permanent role on the show, Vangsness said.
The success is a refreshing change from days when jobs came few and far between, said the bleached-blonde actress.
“I have to say, it is the strangest thing to sit down, and say, ‘Wow, look that's me on the box,' ” Vangsness said. “But in a way it seems completely normal, because I have worked so hard to get to this point.
“I am crazy grateful, but it hasn't changed me. I still shop at the same places, I'm the same person,” Vangsness said. “Except that when I slide my credit card, I don't have to worry about it bouncing.”
But in the end, everything goes back to Porterville, the place and the upbringing that keeps her from going totally Hollywood, and staying the “same ol' Kirsten.”
“I understand every different type of struggle, and I know that my upbringing has absolutely colored the way I view things in life,” Vangsness said. “I need to come back and visit. Do they still have the Jackass Mail Run?”
They still do.

CRIMINAL MINDS INTERVIEW
Those Criminal Minds folks are funny
Jan 18th 2007 by Joel Keller
Maybe it's because they work on such a dark show. Maybe it's because many of the actors on the show have at least some comedy in their backgrounds. But the folks from Criminal Minds really like to yuk it up. At least that's what I got from the "informal" (again, that means "jammed in a far-too-small conference room") session for the procedural. The panel consisted of executive producers Edward Allen Bernero and Mark Gordon, and stars Thomas Gibson, Paget Brewster and Shemar Moore.
Gibson started off the comedy by lifting a jar of candy from the table and offering them to the gathered crowd. "They're wah-fer thin," referring to a classic bit from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
Brewster, on whom I still have a bit of a crush from her stints on Friends and the late, lamented Andy Richter Controls the Universe, let off a couple of zingers. A few minutes after Moore mentioned he was on the "George Clooney track," and referred to his 8 pilots, she brought back that reference by going, "I beat you. I've done 16 pilots and I desperately wanted to be on a successful show."
Moore was also funny. When the producers asked if there would be more romantic entanglements on the show (Moore's character, Derek Morgan, is having a flirtation with Kirsten Vangsness' character, Penelope Garcia), they replied that it wasn't that type of show, and that there's no time for that kind of story. Moore added: "our show is such a ticking clock... When do you have time to take off your clothes and knock boots?"
Brewster took that an extra step by bringing up one of the darker storylines: "Maybe the little boy in the basement." she then did a mock-sly, "Hey, do you want it?"
The post Super Bowl episode of the show will be a "good episode," according to Gordon, but they haven't written an "event" episode, or one that will ease off on the show's usual grim style. "It was important for us to do our show," said Bernero. "The show is about what it's about. so we weren't asked to (tone it down)."
Of course, the cast is elated. Gibson wore his "Super Bowl pajamas" the night before they filmed that episode. Brewster's reaction: "I like it. The more people that see me, the better."

CRIMINAL MINDS: THOMAS GIBSON SMILED IN "DHARMA & GREG".
Criminal Minds star Thomas Gibson pictured above in a cap from "Dharma & Greg". Thanks to slash_girl for the great cap. There is often discussion about how little the character Aaron Hotchner smiles on Criminal Minds. There is no doubt from the caps Stacy has sent me that TG certainly smiled alot as Greg. Thomas Gibson is a very versatile actor to be able to portray such a wide range of characters. Kudos to TG. :)

CRIMINAL MINDS: THOMAS GIBSON INTERVIEW
THE PHILADELPHIA ENQUIRER: DAILY MAGAZINE
Posted on Wed, Jan. 10, 2007
A ‘Criminal Mind’ and a family kind
Thomas Gibson, the intense Agent Hotchner of "Criminal Minds," will pass on CBS's Super Bowl hoopla - he's happy at home, cast as family man.
By David Hiltbrand
Inquirer Staff Writer
If you keep your eyes peeled during the Super Bowl, you might spot cast members from Criminal Minds in the stands.
But you won't see Thomas Gibson.
CBS has awarded the plum postgame spot on Feb. 4 to its series about an elite FBI behavioral analysis unit that hunts serial killers.
So, many of the cast will be in Miami for the big game to glad-hand sponsors and be photographed in the seats.
But not Gibson, who plays Agent Hotchner, the unit's intense supervisor.
"If the game were in California, I'd be there in a heartbeat," says Gibson, 46. "But I have to work Monday morning. I've taken that flight from Miami on a Sunday night to work on a Monday morning. I remember refueling in Phoenix at 4 in the morning."
"Besides," he says, "I already do so much traveling."
That's no exaggeration. Gibson commutes to work on Criminal Minds from San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Cristine, and children, T.J., 7, Travis, 4, and Agatha, 2.
He's at home this morning, taking advantage of a midweek break in his shooting schedule. He's already gotten the brood up and off to school and is happy to talk about the show.
Even without the expected Super Bowl bounce, Criminal Minds has been on a roll. In its second season, the series has averaged nearly 17 million viewers, up 25 percent from last year. Recently, it's beaten its time-slot rival Lost so consistently that ABC is moving the island intrigue to a later hour.
How did CBS's procedural overtake ABC's cult fave?
"I don't know that people want to make a five-year commitment to a show," says Ed Bernero, Criminal Minds' executive producer. "Our show's episodes have a beginning, a middle and an end." (Well, except for the Super Bowl installment, which will be a two-parter.)
Gibson believes the answer is simpler. "I think the audience likes the characters and they like the stories," he says. "I've thought since the beginning that the show was like Sherlock Holmes broken into seven characters."
Going up against Lost was an advantage, to his way of thinking. "We had the luxury of low expectations," he says.
If anyone knows about time- slot competition, it's Gibson. In 1994, along with his Criminal Minds costar Mandy Patinkin, he debuted in Chicago Hope, a series everyone expected to be a major hit. Except it was on against another Windy City hospital show, ER, that became a ratings monster.
Unhappy with how marginalized his character, Dr. Daniel Nyland, became in this big-ensemble drama, Gibson left after three years.
He began auditioning for pilots, stopping by the Chicago Hope set to run lines with his former castmate Peter Berg (now the executive producer of Friday Night Lights).
"One day he came to my trailer really depressed," Berg says. "He was dressed in drag [for a sitcom pilot called Ask Harriet]. The next week he landed Dharma & Greg and the week after that he came by in a turbo-charged Porsche."
"I was a little bummed that I didn't look good in a dress," Gibson jokes. But the yuppie-marries-hippie sitcom Dharma & Greg had a solid five-year run.
After that Gibson became a vagabond, traveling to Winnipeg, Amsterdam, Australia, New Mexico, New Zealand and Florida to shoot TV movies and feature films.
In 2004, he made the move to San Antonio. "It's my wife's hometown. We didn't have any family in California," he explains. "We felt it was important that the children see their cousins more than once a year. The other issue was not wanting the children to spend all day in the automobile."
The move had an immediate impact on his career. "I knew as soon as we committed to moving out of Los Angeles," he says, "I'd probably get a series in Los Angeles, which is exactly what happened."
But Gibson doesn't mind all the time he spends in airports for Criminal Minds. This is a guy with greasepaint in his veins.
As the youngest of four, growing up in Charleston, S.C., he couldn't go to the local pizza parlor, which had a Dixieland band, without performing.
"I would get up and do Louis Armstrong," he says. "I don't understand where it came from but my mom said, 'I have to get that boy on the stage.' "
Extensive local theater led to study at Juilliard and movie work, including two films, Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut, with Tom Cruise, with whom Gibson shares a birthday.
During the shooting of Far and Away, "Tom threw a great birthday party for the two of us in a bowling alley in Montana," Gibson recalls.
Combine that with his TV resume, and you have an actor who knows his craft.
"Thomas is the consummate professional," Bernero says. "Always on time, always knows his dialogue, always has a point of view for the scene. He's flexible. Just a consummate actor and a hell of a golfer."
Yes, Gibson is something of a ringer on the links, and a regular at the Pebble Beach National Pro Am tourney.
Now we're getting to the real reason he's passing on the Super Bowl next month.
"I think Pebble Beach is that next weekend," he says disingenuously. He knows exactly when it is. "I want to be rested."
Break a putter, Thomas.

CRIMINAL MINDS YAHOO GROUP CHAT: REVISED TIME INFO:
Thank you to Joan for reminding me that since President Bush is hitting the airwaves tomorrow night I need to move the time of the Criminal Minds Yahoo Chat. Since President Bush can be long winded when talking about the war it is impossible to predict how long he will be on the tv. Lets just plan on chatting whenever the show is over. We'll leave the time loose and see what happens. I think we all might really be ready to talk about Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gubler, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness and even Paget Brewster after an hour or so of listening to the President layout his "new" vision of the Iraqi conflict. By the way, if you are of legal age, drinking is permitted in the chatroom. :)

CRIMINAL MINDS OR WATCHING THE PRESIDENT.
Criminal Minds: If I had the choice on Wednesday at 8pm of watching "Criminal Minds" starring Mandy Patinkin, Shemar Moore, Thomas Gibson, Matthew Gubler, Kirsten Vangsness and A.J. Cook or watching the President talk about the war from hell, which do you think I would choose?????
CRIMINAL MINDS: A.J. COOK AS J.J.
The copying of pictures from this blog is expressly forbidden.
Criminal Mind's A.J. Cook is a woman of talent and style. I am excited that her role within the BAU is growing and she is receiving more screen time. :)
CRIMINAL MINDS AND PRESIDENT BUSH??
A member of the Criminal Minds Yahoo Group just posted that President Bush is addressing the nation about the war on Wednesday. Surely this can't be the case! Doesn't the President know that Wednesdays are reserved for "Criminal Minds"? Please someone say that it isn't true. :(
CRIMINAL MINDS: MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER
CRIMINAL MINDS: SHEMAR MOORE AS DEREK MORGAN
Criminal Minds: Shemar Moore is great as Derek Morgan. I have started looking at some of his older work and I am surprised this actor is not much more famous than he is. He is incredibly talented. If you have the opportunity to watch his work prior to Criminal Minds I would really suggest it. :)

MANDY PATINKIN INTERVIEW: PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS
Patinkin dashes madly between series & song
By JONATHAN TAKIFF
Mandy Patinkin has become a master at multitasking, performing his own version of an Olympic triathalon, he declared.
"In this business, you need the nonstop energy of a 2-year-old," said the singer-actor the other day from Los Angeles, as he chomped down on his usual working lunch (plain cooked chicken and a steamed veggie), carried on a phone conversation with a reporter and contemplated his afternoon shooting obligations for the CBS drama series "Criminal Minds."
In the show, so prized by the network that it's going to run an episode right after the Super Bowl next month, Patinkin plays an FBI profiler recently recovered from a mental breakdown. Evidentally, the 14- to 16-hour-a-day shooting schedule he maintains doesn't hurt Patinkin in keeping his edge on. Nor does his own, jovially "crazed" nature, he shared with a laugh.
You might also know Mandy Patinkin from TV shows such as "Chicago Hope" (for which he won an Emmy) and Showtime's "Dead Like Me," from memorable films such as "The Princess Bride" (playing a swashbuckling swordsman) and from starring roles in Broadway hits such as "Evita" and "Sunday in the Park With George."
Tonight and tomorrow, Patinkin will be in our town. More precisely, he'll be on stage at the Merriam, where he'll fine-tune his light falsetto tenor and hearty baritone to highly personal, dramatic vocal performances lightened with humorous between-song patter.
"The most arresting thing about Patinkin is the conversational, often impassioned quality of his singing... . You find yourself listening like you've never listened before," raved the Washington Post. And the London Evening Standard called him "a master entertainer of a type once thought to be extinct."
Joined by longtime piano accompanist Paul Ford, Mandy will dish out some of the tunes he's made famous on Broadway and celebrated on themed albums such as his century-of-music-spanning (Irving Berlin to Alan Menken) "Experiment" and all-Yiddish "Marmoloshen."
Q: You've done movies, you've done TV, you've done concerts and recordings. If you had to focus on just one area, which would it be?
A: Music's the thing I really love the most in the world. It keeps me sane. I'm a pretty dark guy. My journey in life is trying to find the light, so I gravitate to songwriters who can take me there - from Yip Harburg's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to Berlin's "God Bless America" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band." And [Stephen] Sondheim, he's all about turning the darkness into light, to help guys like me look for the silver lining. It's corny as hell but that's what I try to do.
Q: You were in the acting program at Juilliard, then fell into singing almost as an afterthought, didn't you?
A: I didn't have any formal musical training when I got the part of Che in "Evita." That was 1978. So I called up this singing coach, Andy Anselmo, and said, "Can you make me strong, so I don't hurt myself? I'm playing this part where I never shut up - I sing for two hours every night." After he heard me, he said, "You may not know what you're doing, but you're doing it right." He gave me exercises to do. Later, another coach, Joan Lader, also helped me out.
Q: What's your vocal training regime all about ?
A: On days when I'm doing concerts, I stay in bed all day. Actually, I get up and go the gym, then go back to sleep, then get up and go back to the gym, and I vocalize while I exercise, for basically the length of my concert performance. I try and pick a training machine where the guy next to me is wearing earphones. If a guy was singing show tunes next to me, I think I'd probably kill him.
My diet's also very important. I try and keep it simple, and stay away from carbs that will get you high but then drop you down. And right before the show, I chomp on a Zone bar and have a glass of green tea, for energy.
Q: You've recently started doing a concert show with your "Evita" co-star Patti Lupone, haven't you?
A: It's heavy on Richard Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim songs. Every song has a distinct, dramatic personality. We premiered it in Texas, and we're going to start doing it again in April, after "Criminal Minds" stops shooting for the season. I gotta tell you, it doesn't get any better than being on stage with Patti.
Q: On another subject, what brought you back to television? When you walked away from "Chicago Hope," midseason [in 1996], you said you'd never do TV again.
A: Actually, I quit so I could spend time with my family. My kids were little, we were living in New York and I was shooting in L.A. Even when they came out to visit, it was hard to see them.
I went back to TV a few years ago with "Dead Like Me," 'cause the boys are grown men now. And I actually find television extremely challenging.
It's like David Kelley told me in the "Chicago Hope" days - a TV show is like a runaway train that you can't get off till it crashes. The pace is breakneck.
You spend most of your life on the set.
The crew becomes your family. In movies, you shoot a half a page of script a day.
In TV, it's 10 pages a day.

HILARIOUS INTERVIEW WITH MATTHEW GUBLER & KIRSTEN VANGSNESS
Matt Romanada Talks To Criminal Minds stars Matthew Gray Gubler and Kirsten Vangsness
Posted By Matthew Romanada on 09.20.2006
During the CTV upfronts back in May I was given the opportunity to sit down with two of the stars of the surprise hit Criminal Minds, Kirsten Vangness who plays Penelope Garcia, and Matthew Gray Gubler who portrays Dr. Spencer Reid. Despite having to go through multiple interviews in a morning and flying in from Los Angeles both Matthew and Kirsten were in good spirits and showed a great sense of humour that made it hard to keep on track during the interview. The sarcasm was flying from all directions
Criminal Minds was one of the surprise freshman hits from last season. Despite going up against the juggernaut Lost it held its own and build a solid fan base. The show follows a group of FBI agents from the BAU, the Behavioral Analysis Unit, as they fly across the United States trying to solve the "unsolvable" crimes. It has a hint of Silence of the Lambs and succeeds where shows like Profiler failed.
Kirsten: I did two plays yesterday. And then at 10:30 at night I got on a plane and flew here [Toronto], and got here this morning at 6:30 a.m. So I'm feeling a little surreal right now. It's like a big Salvador Dali movie.
Romo: What were the plays about?
Kirsten: It was a young writer's festival. Where these young kids write plays and professional actors portray them.
Romo: Maybe it's just me but I find it's interesting that you two are here together. I get this vibe that there is a strange chemistry between your two characters.
Matthew: In real life we are married"¦. I'm totally kidding.
Kirsten: There is something"¦ I think we are both two of the odder characters on the show. And that I think Garcia is a very high functioning oddball. She can act extroverted even though her job is so techie. He (Matthew's character) is not as good at handling social aspects.
Matthew: She represents everything he is not, she is very tech oriented and I would like to imagine he is more like 1920s smart, books and reading etc"¦.
Kirsten: You have such a hard time with empathy. You struggle with it. Whereas my emotions are so available to me and Reed as more trouble with emotions.
Matthew: Yeah I like that.
Romo: Did you find that because of the "smart" personality of your characters people think you are like that in real life as well?
Matthew: I'm actually borderline retarded. Yeah, but seriously people will stop me and go "Are you really that smart?" and I just say no"¦lol
Romo: So what do you guys think is going to happen for season 2?
Kirsten: I think we are going to travel now by hot air balloon.
Matthew: I think there is gonna be more character development.
Kirsten: YES, I hunger for that.
Matthew: There are little things that should come out next year.
Romo: Mandy Patinkin just seems to bring out the best in the other actors, is that something you have sensed?
Matthew: Oh yeah, 110%
Kirsten: I think we were on episode four or five and we had never acted together, so I was terrified. It was a huge deal. It was like the best day.
Matthew: I'm not a technically trained. But pretty early on I realized as long as you are in a scene with really great actors you can't really suck. I don't know how to explain it.
Matthew: HE is incredible, he's our secret weapon.
Romo: Last year when the upfronts came out a lot of shows were similar to yours that each network brought out.
Matthew: You're right. I remember"¦all the shows were like ours but Criminal Minds was called the worst of those.
Kirsten: Ya I remember that.
Romo: What's made your show the one that's survived?
Matthew: I mean we had a really easy time slot. There is nothing opposite us, like what's Lost? I'm joking. Honestly I have no idea. I think it's the Mandy-quotient.
Kirsten: I definitely think is the Mandy.
Matthew: I think it's the characters too. We have all these crazy characters.
Kirsten: Our show kinda has that horror thing going for it. It has the whole CSI aspect but adds that horror feel to it. Also, I mean do other shows have their own personal Lear Jet? I don't think so.
Matthew: People always stop me and ask me if that is a real jet?
Kirsten: My sister was heart-broken when she found out it wasn't real.
Romo: A lot of the plots in your show are very paranormal. If you guys could have one case that you guys think would be amazing that you haven't seen what would it be?
Matthew: I have two. I can only say one though. We hunt down the Yeti, the abominable snowman. That would be great.
Kirsten: I would love one that the reason why the guy killed everyone was because America doesn't have good primary daycare. Then Mandy goes into the daycare and throws some clay at the teacher.
Matthew: Throw some play-do around.
Kirsten: We need to call the writers. Maybe we could combine the Yeti with the daycare.
Matthew: Maybe the Yeti can run a primary daycare.
Romo: Do you get meet any FBI profilers to get into your characters?
Matthew: Ya there were two, Chris"¦. And"¦
Kirsten: Yeah the other guy is awesome. But yeah people would always say that my character wasn't realistic. Then one day I get this note on my desk saying "We appreciate you." And then one of the profilers came up to me and said, "I want you to know there is a whole basement of people like you at the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) and they worship you."
Matthew: I had the exact opposite reaction. During the pilot the guy Chris was there and I went to ask him something about what would my character do in real life. He looks at me and says "There is nothing realistic about your character"¦
Kirsten: Hahahaha.
Matthew: (Continued) "¦You would never make it in the FBI. You would get made fun of. You would never exist. Heck, you couldn't pass your gun test." So I like "Alright" and it gave me this freedom to do what I want. I'm kinda like the Jar-Jar Binks of Criminal Minds.
Kirsten: And they have that big giant scary book upstairs they get stories out of.
Romo: What's this big giant scary book about?
Matthew: It's a compendium of sex crimes.
Kirsten: It just sits in the middle of the writers table and it's kinda scary.
Matthew: Many of the stories in the show are based a bit on reality.
Romo: Do you get to talk to the writers about where your characters are going to go?
Kirsten: Yeah totally. I'm almost creepy. I will kinda see how it flows and they kinda just let me do how I think it works best. And they do the same thing with you.
Matthew: Yeah, it's true. We are very fortunate.
Romo: If you guys can have one change for your characters over the next year what would it be?
Matthew: That's a good question, man. There is one thing I would like to see, and they have been kinda hinting at it, I think my character is definitely schizophrenic. His mother was schizophrenic. I want to see him freak out and be an unsub. I feel it's a bit like the force with the light side and the dark side, and right now he is on the light side. I think he joined the BAU from stopping himself from doing something bad.
Kirsten: They can change the title to CRIMINAL MINDS: FINDING REED!!!
Kirsten: I love my character so much. Let me think"¦ Well there is that scene of me and J.J. in the stockroom. They wrote that out. I was just making a joke. I'm changing as I go, more so than the other characters. I really don't know.
Romo: Maybe a romantic interest?
Kirsten: Oh Garcia has plenty of romantic interests.
Matthew: I think she is a slut"¦haha.
Kirsten: You say slut like a bad thing. She just knows what she likes.
Matthew: But you know she has a lot of boyfriends.
Kirsten: She has a lot of everything, boyfriends, girlfriends, upholstery, lemurs. She's got so many lemurs. I just want more lemurs.
Matthew: I want less lemurs. Maybe I will start killing them. You know they say that serial killers start by killing animals.
Romo: Yeah I read that somewhere too.
Matthew: We must have read the same book. I was fascinated with [Ed] Gein. The Wisconsin guy. My fav. Who's your favourite?
Romo: My favourite? That's a good question. I'm gonna have to say Ted Bundy. I remember watching the Ted Bundy TV movie and I must have been only 10. I can't believe my parents let me watch that.
Matthew: Do you know Albert Fish? He made soup out of kids.
Kirsten: I love Carl Sagen.
Romo: Well it's a shame but I'm being told that time is up, thanks a lot for the interview.
Kirsten: I'm really glad I got to see the lemur thing out. Now you will see lemurs and yetis all over the set of Criminal Minds.

KIRSTEN VANGSNESS (GARCIA) AS A BRIDESMAID.
THIS PICTURE WAS POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE OWNER. COPYING FROM THIS BLOG IS NOT PERMITTED.
Kirsten, pictured with friends, as a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding. She looks beautiful. I can't help but wonder what Kirsten will wear when she gets married (she isn't engaged so this is not an announcement). I can't imagine her in some lacy frilly long white wedding dress. I think she will find something unique that exhibits her fun inner self. That same fun style that has endeared us to her character Penelope Garcia. Kirsten is a rare breed of actor. You can feel a part of her in the portrayal of the character she plays. When Criminal Minds first aired Kirsten was not contracted as a starring cast member but once we got to know Garcia there was no way the fans could ever have pictured the series without her. I was so pleased that she was made a full fledged starring cast member this season. So Kudos to Garcia for all the wonderful scenes she has given us. And if someone would put a bug in the ears of the writers: We want Garcia's backstory please!!! :)

Real-Life 'Criminal Minds'
Would Criminal Psychology Be a Good Career Change for You?
By Paul D. Rosevear
The growing fascination with the hit primetime TV thriller, 'Criminal Minds,' has many of the show's 16.8 million viewers asking themselves if a career in criminal psychology is right for them.
On the show, the main characters form a behavioral analysis unit composed of criminal psychologists who use their knowledge of the criminal mind to catch perpetrators before they are able to strike again. So just how does one go about reading the criminal mind?
According to the show's executive producer, Ed Bernero, each episode is rooted in real, factual cases, however, experts point out that there is significant artistic license taken to dramatize the action, which begs the question: Which aspects are true and which are exaggerated?
"'Criminal Minds' portrays the psychologist as having a more active role than they really do," explains Marc T. Zucker, academic chair of the undergraduate School of Criminal Justice at Kaplan University. "We all love the thrill of the chase and arrest, however, psychologists don’t typically accompany officers in the apprehension of suspects. In addition, many cases take weeks, months or even years to solve, and very rarely are these cases as easy to piece together as they are on the show."
In real life, profilers like the ones featured on the CBS drama and others like it are few and far between. "All of the characters on the show are FBI profilers, when in reality there are only a handful of full-time FBI profilers," explains Dr. Keith Durkin, chair of the department of psychology and sociology at Ohio Northern University. "If 100 Americans die each year from a serial killer, that's a lot. It's just not worth keeping [profilers] on retainer, since there are so many other needy areas where their expertise can be applied."
A Real-Life Look
While the reality of a career in criminal psychology might not quite be what it is on 'Criminal Minds,' the real-life potential is indeed just as exciting. "Careers in criminal psychology are never boring, and if you have an education in that field, it's great training for a huge range of jobs," explains Durkin. "You can do something different every day. You could work in counseling people who have committed crimes and need psychological assessment. Many psychologists are exploring computer-related fields, like studying Internet predators or helping investigate online fraud."
And, as Durkin points out, the potential for criminal psychology is every evolving. "It’s impossible to know where the future is going to take the field," he says. "I didn't know I was going to help find Internet sex offenders and get them off the streets so they don’t harm children [when I started my career]. There was no Internet when I went to school!"
With the rapid growth of Internet-related criminal activity, the need for tech savvy, educated law enforcement workers will continue to expand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities in all realms of law enforcement will steadily grow anywhere between nine and 14 percent through 2014.
But even as cutting-edge technology forces career psychologists to redefine their roles in law enforcement, there are also plenty of traditional aspects of the career that will remain unchanged, like the research component to psychology careers not necessarily depicted on the show.
"Much of a psychologist's time is spent in front of a computer screen, reading books or articles, and interviewing suspects and convicted offenders," he says. In addition, a criminal psychology background may also often be used to educate and inform other people involved in solving crimes. "Psychologists also write books, publish papers, lecture, and train law enforcement agents interested in using psychological elements in their investigations."
Crime in the Classroom
In order to explore any of these career avenues, you’ll need the appropriate training. "A majority of psychologists in this field have doctoral degrees in psychology, however, a master's degree may fulfill the requirement of some departments for certain positions," says Zucker. Of course, opportunities in this line of work aren't limited to those with advanced degrees. "Individuals who get a bachelor's degree in psychology can use their education to work as a law enforcement agent and become part of their profiling team, but in a different capacity than a psychologist."
Dr. Steven Hundersmarck, a psychology professor at Ohio Northern University who trains police alongside Durkin, says the main thrust of criminal psychology is examining the "why" behind the crimes, more so than the "how."
"The focus [of the job] is on studying what drives individuals to do these things," he says. "There are very particular motivations behind why a killer ties someone up, for example, or targets a prostitute, or kills in a serial fashion."
Hundersmarck illustrates such concepts to his students by requiring they study interviews with criminals, past cases, and by even constructing model crime scenes for his students to analyze. "When it comes to interviewing, my students learn to study a criminal's answers to questions, but also from the manner in which he or she answers them," he explains. "With the model crime scenes, students use inductive and deductive reasoning to speculate what type of person the criminal might be. Inductive reasoning uses stats, crime reports, and information already known, whereas deductive reasoning is related to the crime scene itself."
Life in the Crime-Light
The cast of 'Criminal Minds' makes such reasoning, behavioral analysis, and criminal psychology look like a thrilling career for anybody with a fascination for investigating illegal activity. But the reality isn't as neat and tidy as the show makes it seem.
"This type of job isn't for everybody," says Durkin. "I've seen it get into people's heads. They get a real cynical view of human nature and they become distrusting. Others have a difficult time handling the sexual component inherent to most serial killers."
Still, when your personality suits the work, criminal psychologists claim you won't find more rewarding work. "We get the chance to learn why horrendous crimes occur, and how to prevent them in the future," says Dr. David Kirshner, psychologist and author of 'Adoption: Uncharted Waters' (Juneau Press, 2006), which features case studies of notorious criminals who were adopted.
"Let's face it, there are some bad people that are hardcore psychopaths. But in most cases I've seen, you can get at the truth, educate the public, and implement early treatment to prevent these things from happening," Kirshner explains. "That is the ultimate reward.”
A psychology degree and a law enforcement career may not have you flying around the country in a fancy jet to track serial killers like the characters 'Criminal Minds.' However, it will most certainly open a window into the mind of a criminal -- if you're bold enough to look.
