CRIMINAL MINDS: TV TIMES SAYS THE FANS DID NOTHING.

Criminal Minds: If I were allowed one wish right now it would be that every tv showrunner and writer have a long memory of which tabloids reported the strike fairly and which skewed the facts so much as to make them unrecognizable. It would be my wish that they would never grant an interview to these rags or allow their cast, crew or janitor to talk with them. This strike brought out the best and worst in everybody. There were sides and everyone picked one. As a fan of Criminal Minds I have long been disgusted with the majority of articles written about the show but the following is a classic example of bad journalism!

Once again the NY Times reporter David Carr has gotten it wrong. This is what he had to say about fans:

What about viewers — the real victims of the strike, deprived of new episodes of “Heroes”? There was some keening on the message boards, but mostly, the public shrugged and worked on their “Guitar Hero” chops.

To the Editors:

David Carr's otherwise reasonable analysis of the WGA strike results ("Who Won The Writers' Strike?" February 12, 2008) is dead wrong to dismiss TV viewers as doing nothing but "keening on the message boards" and "work[ing] on their “Guitar Hero” chops." Thousands of passionate, dedicated TV fans united behind advocacy groups Fans for the WGA and Fans4Writers.com and took action on multiple levels: organizing food drops to picketers, educating millions on the issues, and deluging the studios with letters and phone calls demanding a fair deal. Multiple sources confirm CBS' Les Moonves got so many calls he hired two new staffers to take them and had his assistant ask the fans, "What do we have to do to make this stop?" As you have reported elsewhere, Moonves ended up a pivotal figure in bringing the strike to resolution in the end.

As the networks learned, TV viewers are not all couch potatoes who will passively watch whatever is heaped in front of them. They demand quality and fairness, and in the end those demands carried the day.

Ed Bernero, executive producer of CBS' Criminal Minds, says the show won't need to start from scratch; it already has story lines approved and drafts written from before the strike. "For us, it'll kind of be like we went home on a Friday and came back Monday, and we're up and running. We should be shooting by mid-next week."

Edward Allen Bernero, executive producer of Criminal Minds, asked me to post his letter to the fans of the show.

Dear Fanatics --

By now, most of you have heard that there's at
least an end to the strike in view. The membership
will be voting on Tuesday whether to call off the
stoppage and then, in ten days, on the acceptance of
the contract proposed. The proposed agreement our
negotiators reached with the AMPTP is not all that we
hoped it would be, but I believe it gives us important
inroads for the future of our industry.

This has been an incredibly difficult time for
everyone who works in this business and I think most
are ready to go back to work (though I do believe that
we would have stayed out much longer if need be).
There are things that happened over the last four
months I'm very proud of. There are also things that
dishearten me greatly, both in the actions of my
fellow Guild members and actions on the companies
part. There was a sense of team work within the
framework of what we, the studios and the networks
were doing that I think was harmed and is going to
take a long time to rebuild. A sense of trust that
will be hard to get back. I think, in the end, when
we look at what the companies agreed to, my biggest
question is, "Why?" Why was this stoppage necessary
to even obtain the tiniest bit of fairness?

You will hear in the coming months and years many
analyses of the strike and it's consequences,
strategies, and victories/defeats. I'm sure there
will be much discussion of how SAG staying united with
the WGA put enormous pressure on the AMPTP. How the
side deals made with smaller companies put pressure on
the larger companies. How the companies were not as
prepared for this strike as they suggested they were.
How the canceling of the Golden Globes and the
impending threat to the Oscars was the final straw.
How the DGA never would have been able to negotiate
the deal they did without the pressure put on the
AMPTP by the strike. All of this is true.

But there's something you may not hear as much in
the future that I want you to know we are acutely
aware of. You fans put equally as much pressure on
these huge, multi-national corporations. I'm
absolutely certain they NEVER expected that. You
participated loudly and often. Petitions and pencils
and drives for strike funds and auctions and letters
and phone calls and faxes. They heard you. We know
they heard you and we are eternally in your debt for
the support. Never forget that you made a difference.
In some respects, the most important difference.

While it happened across the board, fans of many
shows were involved in their own (as well as shared)
activities, the Criminal Minds Fanatics distinguished
themselves. And we aren't the only ones who noticed.
John Bowman, the Guild's Chair of Negotiations said to
me in the beginning of January, while you were in the
midst of your petition drive, "Wow -- the Criminal
Minds fans are pretty amazing." No kidding. I told
him he didn't know the half of it.

On a personal note, the money you selflessly
collected was used to help our crew members when they
needed it. Let me thank you for them. The endlessly
positive continued support on the site provided
untold comfort in the darkest days. The food you sent
to the picket line became a highlight of every day out
there. The petition reminded the people in charge
at the companies that you were not willing to just
watch anything they put out there. That you care
about this show and, especially, that you care about
the people who make it.

We are going back to work soon and we will be
making as many new episodes for this season as we can
in the time we have left. We don't know how many that
will be yet (those discussions will be ongoing and, if
we get some definitive answer, I will come back to the
board and let you all know), but we promise to work as
hard as we can to give you, our family, the show we
all love.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. As always, you
humble me.

Criminal Minds: Chris Mundy, co-executive producer and writer for Criminal Minds had this to say about what happens now that the strike is over.

"It will be all hands on deck for the writing staff," Chris Mundy, co-executive producer of the CBS drama Criminal Minds, told the Associated Press on Sunday.

He'd like to broadcast about seven episodes by the end of May. "It's a real balancing act," Mundy said, "to get up and running as fast as possible, but not let the quality slip."

CRIMINAL MINDS WRITERS MAY BE GOING BACK TO WORK.

Criminal Minds: The writers of Criminal Minds will be joining the membership of the WGA-West today to review the tentative deal with the AMPTP. If all goes well then the writers strike will end and the Criminal Minds writers will be back at work next week. Fingers crossed.

We have a tentative deal.

It is an agreement that protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery. It creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that, "When they get paid, we get paid."

Less than six months ago, the AMPTP wanted to enact profit-based residuals, defer all Internet compensation in favor of a study, forever eliminate "distributor's gross" valuations, and enforce 39 pages of rollbacks to compensation, pension and health benefits, reacquisition, and separated rights. Today, thanks to three months of physical resolve, determination, and perseverance, we have a contract that includes WGA jurisdiction and separated rights in new media, residuals for Internet reuse, enforcement and auditing tools, expansion of fair market value and distributor's gross language, improvements to other traditional elements of the MBA, and no rollbacks.

Over these three difficult months, we shut down production of nearly all scripted content in TV and film and had a serious impact on the business of our employers in ways they did not expect and were hard pressed to deflect. Nevertheless, an ongoing struggle against seven, multinational media conglomerates, no matter how successful, is exhausting, taking an enormous personal toll on our members and countless others. As such, we believe that continuing to strike now will not bring sufficient gains to outweigh the potential risks and that the time has come to accept this contract and settle the strike.

Much has been achieved, and while this agreement is neither perfect nor perhaps all that we deserve for the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, our strike has been a success. We activated, engaged, and involved the membership of our Guilds with a solidarity that has never before occurred. We developed a captains system and a communications structure that used the Internet to build bonds within our membership and beyond. We earned the backing of other unions and their members worldwide, the respect of elected leaders and politicians throughout the nation, and the overwhelming support of fans and the general public. Our thanks to all of them, and to the staffs at both Guilds who have worked so long and patiently to help us all.

There is much yet to be done and we intend to use all the techniques and relationships we've developed in this strike to make it happen. We must support our brothers and sisters in SAG who, as their contract expires in less than five months, will be facing many of the same challenges we have just endured. We must further pursue new relationships we have established in Washington and in state and local governments so that we can maintain leverage against the consolidated multinational conglomerates with whom we bargain. We must be vigilant in monitoring the deals that are made in new media so that in the years ahead we can enforce and expand our contract. We must fight to get decent working conditions and benefits for writers of reality TV, animation, and any other genre in which writers do not have a WGA contract.

Most important, however, is to continue to use the new collective power we have generated for our collective benefit. More than ever, now and beyond, we are all in this together.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood's striking writers have made a key breakthrough in contract talks with film and television producers, leading to what could be a deal between the two parties by the end of next week, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Negotiators in the bitter labor dispute reached an understanding late on Friday on how to deal with payments writers would receive when their work was streamed over the Internet, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources.

HOW I STARTED: "My grandfather played golf and gave me some clubs when I was 13. I had lessons one summer in Charleston, South Carolina, and got completely hooked, and broke 40 for the first time for nine holes, which is a big deal. Then the next summer I went on to tennis because there were no girls at the golf tournaments. When I moved to New York, there was really no money or time to go play golf--I probably played once a year. Then five years ago I moved to L.A. and got bit again completely. Now I'm obsessed."

THE ROUTINE: "I don't get to practice a lot, which is the bane of my golf game. Maybe I'll play three or four times one week when I'm not working [Dharma & Greg, Eyes Wide Shut], and then I'll go two weeks before I play again. I joined a club last year, and it's some of the best money I've thrown away in my life!"

THE PAYOFF: "Golf is about being outside surrounded by green. It clears your head. It's also about the concentration it takes to play well. There's nothing like the feeling of hitting a great shot and watching the ball fly. And it teaches you lessons about life, about being patient, about things going your way and not--good breaks and bad."
