CRIMINAL MINDS: ARE YOU OBSESSED?

Criminal Minds question for the upcoming week: You know you're obsessed with Criminal Minds when...?

CRIMINAL MINDS & DEXTER: LEAVE US OUT OF THIS FIGHT!

Criminal Minds: Now that Dexter is moving from Showtime to CBS the press is comparing it to Criminal Minds. That has brought Criminal Minds some good press but the majority of it has been negative. Editors: Leave Criminal Minds out of this one. While the Criminal Minds writers often introduce us to unsubs that deserve our empathy they never ask us to root for the unsub to score a fresh kill. It took me 30 minutes to find one article that stands up for CSI and Criminal Minds. Thanks Mr. Moonves for the new controversy! Lets all remember that Dexter coming to CBS is fallout from the wga strike that Mr. Moonves helped prolong. Thanks to the writer of the following article for getting it right!

'CBS also claims that Dexter is no different from other crime dramas like Law & Order, Criminal Minds and C.S.I. But unlike those other crime dramas, the hero is not a police officer, forensic investigator or FBI agent trying to capture the criminal so they can be put to justice. The hero in this series is a cold-blooded serial killer. Unlike other crime dramas where you root for the “good guy” to prevail, Dexter asks viewers to root for the criminal.'

CRIMINAL MINDS: ANOTHER LOOK AT THE WGA STRIKE:

Criminal Minds: A wonderful article by Susan, the VDOVAULT:

Variety: Peter Bart's Column: Hollywood picks up the pieces.

If you are hearing peals of laughter emanating from the general direction of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia it is me laughing so very hard at Peter Bart, Variety's editor, whining in this summary of the strike article about the blogosphere appearing to be "...the ideological spear carriers for the Writers Guild, blotting out voices of restraint".

Note to Peter: But for his several hundred dollar a year entertaiment trade 'news' magazine so obviously picking the side of the moguls (and let's be clear here that not only do the studios and networks have money to throw away on multiple subscriptions to the over priced publication, they also pay for the vast majority of advertisements in it so it is amusing to not note that bias yet still call the publication a 'news' outlet and charge readers handsomely for the 'privilege' of access to it), the "shrill cacophony" of the blogosphere would never have reached the volume level it did without outlets like Peter's serving as unofficial publicity departments for the corporations and trying to spread bias virally throughout the mainstream media.

So Mr. Bart in a way you're responsible for the noise level, not solely, uniquely or completely because other news outlets were equally sycophant-like in their pandering to the mogul point of view but we should acknowledge you for that very important role you paid in igniting the fires of so many of us to put more sides of the story of the strike out there...my hat is off to you for making this blog as popular as it has been.

Now here's Peter...(who apparently thinks viewers "were busily surfing the Web, buying more DVDs, playing more videogames, watching more online videos and otherwise finding new ways of being entertained". Since it costs money, time and effort to talk to us 'little people' and get the whole story, of course he has to toss off a line of his stock in trade conjecture of what we really did during the strike)

Criminal Minds: Joe Mantegna stars in David Mamet's 'Redbelt'

Criminal Minds: Joe Mantegna, David Rossi on Criminal Minds, has another movie about to be released.

Redbelt stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as master of Ju-Jitsu who has dropped out of the unscrupulous world of professional fighting. After he helps out a mouthy movie star in a bar one night (as played by Tim Allen) he is eventually forced back into the ring of UFC fighting to defend his honor. There is also a hint of a freaky fighter selection process involving marbles and tying your hands behind your back, but that explanation is best left to the trailer.

Appearing alongside Ejiofor are Emily Mortimer (aka, the woman with 'Avian Bone Syndrome' on TV's 30 Rock), Alice Braga (I am Legend), Ricky Jay (who you might recognize as the cameraman from Boogie Nights and a few million other films), and Joe Mantegna. Mamet, who is a big fan of Ju-Jitsu and UFC fighting, wrote the script himself, and besides a few photo releases this trailer is our first chance to see what the film is actually about. Like many, I was having a hard time reconciling a master like Mamet with this kind of subject matter, but luckily it looks like it is all going to turn out for the best. Redbelt will hit theaters in a limited release on April 25th of this year.

CRIMINAL MINDS QUESTION OF THE DAY.

Criminal Minds: The support we showed for the WGA was unwaivering and strong. I was the Criminal Minds liason and a moderator for the LJ WGA Supporters Board and now the question has been asked as to whether we are willing to support SAG in the same way as they head into their negotiations. So my Criminal Minds question for the day is: Will CM fans support a SAG strike if they have one?

CRIMINAL MINDS: JOE MANTEGNA STARS IN "WITNESS PROTECTION".

Criminal Minds star Joe Mantegna, David Rossi on Criminal Minds, has a new movie coming to theaters on February 22, 2008. "Witness Protection" stars: Larry The Cable Guy, Ivana Milicevic, Yaphet Kotto, Peter Stormare, Eric Roberts, Joe Mantegna and Jenny McCarthy.

Plot Summary: Larry the Cable Guy returns for another comic misadventure as a small town sheriff who unwittingly gets involved in a high profile FBI case in Lionsgate's new comedy, "Witless Protection." During a routine day spent patrolling his small town, Larry witnesses a beautiful, high-class woman, Madeleine, being held against her will by four mysterious, black-suited men. Recognizing the opportunity to save the day, Larry "kidnaps" her, only to learn that Madeleine is actually a key witness in a high-stakes Chicago crime case and her captors are FBI agents assigned to protect her. Madeleine is furious. But Larry, who rightly suspects the agents are crooked and Madeleine is in danger, forces her on a harebrained trip to Chicago to solve the case himself. Together, the hilariously mismatched duo must grapple with angry FBI agents, quack doctors and Chicago high society in his funniest, most unpredictable adventure yet.

CBS RENEWS 11 SERIES FOR THE 2008-2009 SEASON

CRIMINAL MINDS is Wednesday's top scripted program in viewers, averaging 14.06 million viewers in its competitive Wednesday (9:00-10:00 PM) time period. CRIMINAL MINDS is produced by ABC Studios in association with CBS Paramount Network Television. Mark Gordon, Ed Bernero and Deb Spera are executive producers.

CBS Press Release: Feb. 14, 2007

“MISCONCEPTIONS” starring A.J.Cook enters post-production.

Criminal Minds star A.J.Cook's, JJ on Criminal Minds, stars in "Misconceptions".

Misconceptions, if you haven't paid attention, is a dramedy about a gay couple (Orlando Jones is one half, with a solid role on the page and in the clips) striking an agreement with a deeply religious woman (A.J. Cook) to carry their child because she thinks God wants her to, despite their "Sodomite" ways. There are other characters involved, making this a gentle satire of gay rights and Christian opposition but not at anyone's expense unless you wish to be militant.

Anyway, the movie looks like it has potential, maybe on the gay festival circuit if it's underestimated and at the very least regional, straight festivals if it isn't. Everyone with the proper apparatus can relate to the fertility clinic clip, at least.

Misconceptions was filmed on a $500,000 budget (according to Satlof) with a lot of Eckerd volunteers and as many people working for less money than they deserve. Most of them were at the Don, and standing off to the side watching them share their accomplishment was pretty cool.

Satlof made sure to tell everyone the clips shown didn't have his final cut seal of approval. I sneaked a few looks at his face and could sense he was mostly pleased but has a few editing room ideas. Funny, but I met him 5 weeks ago and learned he is a vigorous person for age 69. He looked younger Wednesday, showing off his (and co-writer Ira Pearlstein's) baby.

He'll be heading into post-production now, hoping to have Misconceptions ready to show to distributors at fall/winter festivals. Wish him luck.

CRIMINAL MINDS: DR. SPENCER REID IS NO PSYCHO!

Criminal Minds: CSI, Criminal Minds and Dexter???

On Feb. 17, CBS premieres a crime drama about a police forensics expert in Miami. It is a disturbingly grisly procedural in which murder victims are rendered into gorgeously art-directed gore.

They have a name in the TV business for that kind of series: a CBS show. The network has had a successful formula for years with series like CSI and Criminal Minds, bloody odes to killers and the science nerds who catch them.
