Shame on you CBS!

I'm still crushed by this news. I honestly don't think I can watch the show anymore without these lovely ladies. It wouldn't be worth it. The show's content, while amazing, can be quite confronting, seeing AJ and Paget on the show warm the room even with all the imagary we see. I am crushed, angry, sad and confused by this decision.

I just find out this and i must say i am really impressed, because I thought that the show´s stability was in control.
Each actor complements perfectly with each other . I know that no one is essential in this life but every rule has an exception and this is the proof of it.
If the real problem is economic, then why the hell they want to ruin theirselves even more?
Without Paget and Aj the chemistry and the great dynamic will be lost.
damn....I am so upset right now that I am left speechless¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

I am truly saddened by the completely inexplicable decision to cut AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewster's role.

CBS, I would really, and I mean really, like to know if there has been any indication from the fans that we want any new characters. Because you are doing the show for the fans right? I mean no fans = no show...

Over 26000 and counting can't be wrong! Keep both AJ and Paget!

There is no other show that I enjoy the way I enjoy Criminal Minds and a big part of that is due to the amazing cast and the fantastic interaction between the characters. Please don't ruin that.

Please continue to give young women, and me too, strong role models. Why would you want to take that away??

Listen to us, please! Like I said no fans = no show...

Think about it!

Here's my bit sent to CBS...
I realise that there are considerations and issues associated with decision making that we, the viewing public, will never be privy to. Just wanted to say that one of the joys of CM is the dynamic of the current group of cast members/characters. Whilst the males may be seen by many as the key presence of the show, this does not mean that the females don't "hold their own". Some of the most engaging and effective scenes are the interaction between the male and current female characters - the interplay of the different "personalities" making up the effectiveness of the whole. It is my feeling that week to week viewer loyalty comes from engaging an emotional attachment to the characters and their individual and relationship development rather than just the skill of show and the episode by episode storylines. Without wanting to be thought to make a pun of it, in your decision making please consider the “psychology” of what engages a viewer with a show long term – with this then equating to reliable audience numbers, advertising exposure and thus revenue.

Dear CBS,

I may only be a fan from the UK and therefore of no significance to your way of thinking as I don't contribute to your ratings, but I am of significance when it comes to buying boxsets and associated merchandise for Criminal Minds. If the proposed complete cut of A. J. Cook's character and the dramatic reduction of Paget Brewster's character do go ahead, I can assure you that I will not be buying boxsets of future seasons or any other associated merchandise, nor will I watch the spin-off if it gets imported to the UK.

The cutting of two female characters just to save money is a very bad move. It makes you appear sexist and dramatically affects the dynamics of the team on the show (and I would guess, the dynamics of the actors whilst filming).

If you cannot see what a big mistake you are making from cutting these two fine actresses then shame on you, you deserve to have your ratings and reputation plummet.

Yours sincerely,
Susan Baker
An English fan of Criminal Minds.

what CBS need to realise is that cutting AJ and Paget is that they will lose viewers. Keeping them means that they wont lose as many views.

Its sad to think that they will get rid of people that people look up to, i'm only 16 and i look up to these to women so please CBS bring them back.

i am so upset about this decision! im so confused as to why on earth CBS would release AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewsters show time. It is compleatly unfair. it sounds sexist and im really upset about that. the poor woman! i dont even know if im going to watch CM next year now. i just dont understand how you could do this. JJ breifs the team and decides were they go and shes like the mother of the team. and then emil prentiss is the strong independent woman who kicks ass along side the boys. now there is going to be one woman left on the show! 1!? thats terible. even if they got someone to replase AJ, nothing will ever be the same. CBS is going to loose so many fans. so many! including myself ! JJ and Emily are role models to girls everywhere. i know that they are mine. and i really dont want to see JJ gone. and i truely hope that Paget dosent loose the number of shows she does. and Paget better not be fired. otherwise ill like jump of a bridge or soemthing idk! im so mad, confused, sad and i really hope CBS works this out.
SAVE PAGET AND AJ<3333

What the what?

Do this, and I definitely will dump CM. Seriously, what is CBS thinking? You can't survive without Brewster and Cook.

I am completely dismayed by CBS's decision to fire AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewster's hours. All three female characters on Criminal Minds have so many wonderful qualities that are absent from so many female characters:

1. They're all smart and tough without sacrificing their feminity;

2. They're neither overly sexualized nor do they downplay their beauty;

3. They're funny, sarcastic, and sometimes grumpy without being portrayed as nagging, mean witches;

4. They all have their own distinct personalities (you couldn't substitute one character's dialogue with anothers).

5. They have such a wonderful friendship with each other. Most shows (especially crime procedurals/dramas) completely ignore the potential for a personal connection between their female characters, but these ladies have great chemisty and comes across as completely believalbe that they like hanging out with each other outside of work.

I'd really, really hate to see CBS try to bring in a new female character. The one thing I find more insulting than underdeveloped female characters or the belief that female characters are disposable is the notion that female characters are interchangeable and the one they bring on will be just as good as the one they've gotten rid of.

Criminal Minds is a fantastic ensemble show with great ratings that have increased over time. Messing with that formula just to save a few bucks is reckless and downright stupid.

Anonymous said...

I am so upset about what CBS has decided to do with my favorite show! I'm sorry but Criminal Minds will not be the same without AJ and Paget. You can't take away or reduce ANY of the characters on this show, the impact would be too drastic. This show is so good because of the awesome cast and how well they work together and help show that the characters are family.

I will have no desire to watch the show if CBS goes through with this. It bothers me even more that they're trying to play it off as "creative reasons" which is BS. It IS finacial and it's like CBS thinks the fans are stupid or something. We know how much CBS pays Charlie Sheen and we know that there's going to be a CM spin off (that no one asked for I might add) so thats where all the money is! Axe the spin off!!

I really hope the fans stay true to the boycott if CBS goes through with this. We have to show them that it's not just a TV show to us.

Anonymous said...

This is like tearing a Family apart. Would you actually trade your mom in or cut how much you see her? NO you wouldn't! I for one LOVE this show and everyone in it. Trading A.J. and reducing Paget's episodes is like taking family members away 1 at a time. I am saddened and will not be watching without the whole group. Hugs to you all and I hope you change your mind on this ridiculous change.

Why is there money for a spin-off a lot of people don't want but cut-backs on the original successful show? Talk about alienating your fans!!!! I will stop watching if this happens!

Emma said...

I really don't understand this decision, is it because CBS believe the girls to have a smaller fanbase? I'm not entirely sure, or do they think that they are just deemed "boring"? Well I believe if the writers gave the girls thirty per cent of the storylines that the men get, they would have a bigger and stronger fanbase. It is not the actresses or characters faults, I put it down to the writers.

CBS need to know that we will boycott their shows and their advertisers' products until they change their decision.

It is unlikely also that the show will be able to continue the way it has previously.

And to think that they are doing this to save money for the spin-off, or so has been apparent... A spin-off that I believe will not get ratings that could compare to Criminal Minds.

Anonymous said...

This is so upsetting to the female audience. Do CBS truly believe that we watch for the male characters alone? Really?

I personally watch for the team, as a whole. It is unfair to think that CBS believe that we will be happy to see a new female character come in to replace one and a half original characters. Is she younger, or "fresher"? If this is the case, they obviously believe that women are interchangeable and not important. This chauvinistic ideal will surely be crushed when they see their numbers diminish and their advertisers.

When i First read That A.J was getting kicked off the show,I thought it was a joke! How can this be for "creative reasons"!!!!!!!!!If CBS want to kill the show, they're going the right way about it!I know for a fact that JJ and Emily are a lot of people's favourite characters(including mine)and the fact that they wont be on the show means that people wont watch the show anymore. The fact that the men haven't been touched is seriously sexist.I can honestly say that my obsession with CM is dying because of this atrocity!!They really shouldn't mess with perfection but they did and they'll be sorry because nobody will watch CM or the crappy looking spin off!!!!!!!
I really hope that our complaints are being acknowledged here and the petition aswell!

This is quite absurd. It seems to me that CBS is quite bias against female characters/actors as it seems to be trimming not only these actors, yet a lot of their female driven shows.

Criminal Minds is one of my absolute favorite shows. If CBS does release AJ Cook and Paget Brewster however, I will NOT be watching! At this rate, I may not be watching CBS at all.

CBS must be on drugs these days!

Emily and JJ (Paget & AJ) are what strong women are all about..They teach the young girls today that you can have a career and have a family(JJ) and that you can survive and kick butt in a "Man's occupation" (Emily) I'm sick of women being portrayed as victims all the time...Finally we have two strong women role models and CBS wants to yank them? This is such an awesome show and it isn't because of one individual, it's because it's a combination of the 7 of them and the way they work together and respect each other and love each other as family!!!

7-2 = Failure CM is my fav show, I would hate to see the rating plummet and the show be cancelled because of this.. but sadly i think that is what will happen..when this show easily could have the longevity of LA LAW!!! CBS do the right thing!!!

The problem is the exec's think they know what we want. They put this show out there and we wanted it, so they think, "We will always know what they want."

They don't. If the show was just about the procedure, they wouldn't give us the characters. They wouldn't develope them. They wouldn't make us interested.

But we are. And they have been dicking around Emily and JJ's story line for so long. We've been screaming for background, for them to be fleshed out. But they stop listening after we say, "Hey, we like this show."

The real knife to the back is saying, "You don't want AJ/JJ, you want this new person." BECAUSE WE DON'T. What will they give to this new person that they couldn't give to JJ? A better story line?

Here's the problem. Without the show/writers/producers, we wouldn't be fans. Without the fans there wouldn't be a show. Which came first the chicken or the egg?

For all the crap with writing in Strauss breaking up the team, "We're a family, no one splits us up," it's shocking to see this.

Im terribly upset, not only because I'm losing 2 of my fav characters, but because this all seems so much more than not renewing a contract.

Sexism? Ageism? Working mother issues? What? What is the real reason?

Was there a poll, "who do you want to get rid of?" that I didn't know about? Did someone complain enought?

It just doesn't make enough sense. And it seems as though the rug was pulled out from under EVERYONE. Cast, fans, everyone.

How do you go from writing 2 characters in a finale and then axing them quickly? How do you go from active promotion with these two actresses, to completely dismissing them?

AND HOW TO YOU JUSTFY PAYING CHARLIE SHEEN!?!?!?!?

WHAT?!?!?! I go away for a couple of days and come home to THIS???

I have been a dedicated CM fan since the show's inception. This statement has probably been repeated thousands of times already in the last four days, but that displays the enormity and diversity of the show's fan base. The refusal to pick up A.J. Cook's contractual option and the imposing reduction/renegotiation of Paget Brewster's contract is nothing short of demeaning, disrespectful, and ludicris.

This show has built its' solid ground upon the synergy of the seven characters. Yes, albeit, there were two cast changes prior, but those were in the fledgling seasons of the show, and the group had not cemented its' identity completely. We now have had the pleasure and privilege of watching these seven actors work together, work off of each other, and create a strong team bond that makes this show work for several seasons.

By attempting to remove A.J. Cook and attempting to "reduce" Paget Brewster, CBS has not only offended the viewership, but the network is also trying to sever the bond that has made this show great. The fans/viewers/pay your bills/meal ticket would like for the seven actors to remain together in the show for the duration of its' longevity. I do not remember, personally, being excited about a spin-off, now, one for which CBS cannot afford without slashing the original. It IS big business. I get it. I think all of us do. But what kind of sound business decision is it to alienate and anger the fan base that continues to financially support a show, and without who there would be no show?

All seven of the actors that make up the CM team are extraordinary and wonderful in his/her own way. Each one brings something special and valued each day that he/she comes to work. To now say that two of those seven (both being female, which is the other HUGE problem with what is happening here) are not important anymore is disrespectful to THE CAST. I cannot imagine what A.J. and Paget are feeling right about now, and I, for one, am disappointed in the way that CBS had atempted to handle this matter.

Yes, this is wordy. But here it is. Slap the viewership in the face by trimming the female cast blatantly and in a sexist manner. CHECK. Disrespect the fan community by dodging comments and thinking that we will just swallow everything. CHECK. Let's see....cancel CM spin-off after just four episodes because no one is watching a very expensive Forrest Whitaker. CHECK. DOUBLE CHECK.

Bring A.J. back where she belongs, and keep Paget as a full-time regular on one of the best shows on television.

Sarah Welsch said...

They are targeting the women but what about the men. They are keeping the men and saying women need to go back into the kitchen. I am not a big feminist but I do believe that men and woman are equal. So if they cut AJ they should have cut one of the guys that have been there since the beginning. Meaning instead of Paget getting her on screen time cut in half it would be Hotch he has a kid and his ex wife just died who would blame Hotch for leaving. So why Paget and not Thomas? CBS and Criminal Minds have pissed off the female viewers. Oh and I will never ever ever watch the stupid spin off. And as far as the other shows on CBS. Count me out.

Caroline said...

I can only agree with the previous comments, it's insane how CBS believe that this will be some kind of solution and actually GOOD for the show.. To loose AJ and Paget's characters will be a major loss for the show, it is two big seats to fill, probably too big to make it go round without them. Such a shame on a great show.

Ginger said...

Both Emily and JJ are essential for CM!
1. JJ and Emily have been allowed to be women and yet still be just as kickass as their male counterparts.
2. JJ brings a gentleness to the show which is needed as a contrast
3. JJ and Emily are not just there as love interests for the boys. CM shows men and women can be close friends and co-workers without makeing googly eyes at each other. Em and JJ have both proven they can hang with the guys on the field without playing the sex card- what TV show does that nowadays?
4. A replacement will change the great team chemistry. When AJ was on maternity leave and her replacement was with the team- it just felt wrong, Something important was missing: the heart and caring soul of JJ.
5. There are not enough female charcters like JJ on TV, who can be good at their job, have a private live, and not having an affair, drug problem etc.
6. JJ is real, because CM addressed how hard it can be for a working mother and what pressure comes with it.
7. JJ brings another point of view to the team, because she is not a profiler.
8. Emily is the only female profiler. It makes sense that sometime (female) victims or witnesses are more likely to open up and connect better with a female agent.
9. The scenes with the three girls together are always great
10. The occasional girl talk adds another elemet to the show

Criminal Minds has always worked as a show because of it's incredible ensemble cast and the contrast the different characters create. That's why both AJ and Paget are needed.

wait what there taking jj off the show and limiting emily's appearances i think there going to lose a lot of there audiances

I know I'm late to the party, but it just makes me really upset that CBS wants to do this to a show like CM that has always done well. CM is my favorite show. It's great not only because of its subject matter, but because of its ensemble cast. I love all of the actors and characters they portray on CM. It's a great show. I just don't understand why CBS can rationalize paying Charlie Sheen $2 million per episode of Two and a Half Men, but what fire one actress and drastically reduce the role of another on a show as popular as CM to save money. I'm pretty sure AJ and Paget combined only make a slither of what they are offering Charlie Sheen. I feel that this move is sexist on behalf of CBS. We need more positive female roles on tv, and I feel like these two ladies are just what we need. I love AJ and Paget and support them 100%.

I am longtime viewer of Criminal Minds and I want CBS to know that if AJ Cook AND Paget Brewster are not signed on to come back to Criminal Minds FULL TIME for the next season, I will no longer be a loyal viewer.

First of all, I greatly admire greatly actresses and the characters they play and I would be very unhappy with any decision to cut or reduce either of their characters, but to cut out JJ AND reduce Emily's screentime at the same time is something else together. The gender balance on the show and the the depth of the female characters is the main reasons why I watch Criminal Minds every week. Reducing or cutting or even replacing both their parts at once, while leaving all four of the men untouched, shows just such a lack of general respect for female characters - and what they have to offer - that I just don't see how Criminal Minds could continue to be the same show I love if this decision stands.

Beyond that, Agent Prentiss is one of my favorite characters on the show. Watching Paget Brewster rock that role is another one of the main reasons why I tune in each week. Knowing that she is even less likely to be there makes me less likely to watch Criminal Minds, much less look forward to it all week.

Anonymous said...

This is outrageous! When I first heard about this, I thought it was a lame joke, I mean it had to be right? I didn't think that something this stupid would be done. But apparently it has. I cannot believe that CBS would cut out such amazing actresses who clearly have a lot of fans. CBS is going to suffer for their horrible decision: they are going to lose a whole heck of a lot of viewers. I have watched this show from the beginning and was looking forward to the fall for more episodes. I didn't think that it would be possible to get better but it did once Paget joined the cast. I thought she fit in so well and I immediately loved her character. JJ, another fantastic character is part of this ensemble and to just take her out of the show is ridiculous! Another awesome show destroyed. Thanks CBS for ruining my summer!!!

Dear Ms. Tassler,

I read somewhere that you were happy over Charlie Sheen's rather large salary. He surely deserves it, no mistake.

To say to the public that CBS and AJ Cook had creative differences and that is why you are letting her go is suspicious. You offer Paget Brewster a reduced role as well.

I remember many times in the past when creative differences were cited it was usually about money when the actor began to cultivate a following. Then they were either killed off or went to a loser series, or both.

Criminal Minds is not a nerd show only; it is a marvelous and intellectual once a week story that just so happens to have the good fortune to have individual cast members who truly love and respect each other and the 'fands'.

I do not know if you understand that the love and respect that we see on-screen every week is diffused to the fands.

We are so lucky to be a part of Paget's and AJ's 'normal' lives! It makes their characters on tv that much more endearing to all.

I know as a strong woman that we are usually thought of as hormonal, emotional and a tad brainless...maybe a little interchangeable, too.

That is the big mistake the male dominated executives and writers make. Paget and AJ are two very strong women on a par or above the male cast members. This is evident in their superb execution of their lines. Prentiss is as tough a fighter as any of the men, yet tender and JJ can shoot a man in the head through a plate glass window! Those are just two examples and I can cite many more.

You will bring in another actress to replace AJ; AJ is not replaceable! You will limit Paget's participation as well...how is that going to work?

To substitute and lessen the roles of these women is to suggest that in the FBI, women are still glorified coffee getters (sry)! The message it sends out to the public, even those who do not follow this show, is that profile of women from the 1950's!

Amongst the fans are many occupations and academic degrees. We are intelligent and creative and loyal. To fire AJ Cook and lessen the role of Paget Brewster is insulting to the women fans. We will not be dismissed to go make cookies and iron. You are president of CBS! Shame, shame, shame. Please do right by the fans of AJ and Paget. It will be so much more financially and creatively worth it to you in the future.

Thank you for listening.

Dear Ms. Tassler,

I am sending this today with a heavy heart! The Criminal Minds ensemble cast is decidedly one of the best of all ensemble casts. On any of the other shows, even CSI, you will never see the entire group playing off each other as they do here. I love the women and the role they play! Really, I am thrilled to have a show that profiles women not as vicims, but as heroines, equal to or above the male players. Do not get me wrong; I adore Thomas, Joe, Shemar and Matt. AJ and Paget show the tougher side of women with an intellectual tenderness. I can't help but be disturbed that they will not be ther or in a limited capacity. Who will speak to the families in crisis? Dr. Reid? Rossi? Morgan? Hotch? You can't mean Garcia who is pretty much attached to her computers? Please rethink this; they have managed to maintain their 9PM spot for 5 years. I only watch CM & CSI NY on network tv; the rest of my shows are on cable. Paget and AJ have the potential to be like Mariska Hargitay. They need to be given the chance to show the world what their fans already know.

Dear Ms. Tassler,

It has been days since I and a large group of friends wrote you concerning Criminal Minds and your decision to fire two of its female players.

We realize that corporate CBS will probably not rescind its decision, no matter how many people complain, but I feel that your behavior in this situation is completely inappropriate and considerably rude.

The fact that you have not answered any of our messages and have avoided our phone calls is totally out of line. We deserve to have an answer, any answer, to our comments. The fact that you obviously choose to ignore us, shows how little you care about the people who have kept you and others like you employed…the fans.

Many of us are professionals and most deal with the public. My colleagues and I have always written or spoken to people with questions, comments and complaints. To disregard their feelings shows an arrogance that simply does not belong in a profession that relies on the “common man”. You, Ms. Tassler, are guilty of neglect!

Based your past behavior, I do not expect a response, but be assured, this letter will be circulated. I am a concerned viewer and a devoted fan of the show and its cast and I expect to be treated with the same courtesy that I am sure you show to executives and others in positions of power. I suggest you rethink your actions and do the right thing.

My name, etc...

This is an incredibly insane decision! They think that cutting one character, and half cutting another is going to make all their problems go away? Reality check CBS, this will make everything worse! You think you're broke now, wait till you see next season’s ratings! I know for a FACT that I won’t be watching. If you want to save cash, try cutting from a show that isn’t so popular, or at least one that you won’t RUIN by cutting characters. The Criminal Minds team works incredibly well together, their personalities make the show, all the actors and actresses are amazing and really care about each other, plus this is sexist. There are female FBI agents in real life, so to make the show realistic AT ALL, there needs to be some on the team. The writer’s have worked so hard on making a background story for JJ, and the show is doing so well it is completely foolish to mess everything up. Here’s an idea, cancel the spin off! Don’t screw up one of your most profitable TV shows just so you can make another one, especially since you have no clue how popular the spin off will be. Good luck and good reddens. I know where I WON’T be on Wednesday nights!

I know CBS. You need to look after your business. But who was the genius that thought pissing off the viewers, the ones that rise your ratings and made you earn money is a good business strategy???

I'm going to tell you what exactly will happening: No AJ&Paget=No viewers=no money. It's that simple.

I was a little late coming to CM, about season 2/3 after stumbling across it on Sky but got all the dvds & soon caught up. While Reid is my favourite character on the show & I find 'his episodes' the best of the bunch generally J.J's character has really grown on me over the series & Printess is probably my 2nd favourite after Reid (joint with THE Hotch). I'm gathering they're doing a spin off with Forest Whittaker's team. I liked that ep (was on here in the Uk last wk) but I kept thinking 'it's a pretty good team he's got but nowhere near the CM team!' Personally I like Whittaker but would prefer they didn't screw with CM dynamics to get him/it. I'm not adverse to a boycott & if lady power loses out to a spin off I will definately not be watching :) but I have to say though I'll be gutted I wouldn't give up CM, some Printess is better than no Printess I guess. But seriously just leave it sodding be!!! :) We want Printess and we want J.J now bring in Kevin Spacey & lets get Negotiating!... :) Goodbye & thank you :) @HTLRoach x

This is a stupid decision. You can’t fire A. J. Cook and reduce Paget Brewster’s role. I love JJ and Emily. They are vital to this show! Criminal Minds will lose a lot of its appeal to me if they don’t come back full time for the next season.

To say I'm pissed is an understatement. I AM pissed...and disappointed, shocked; the list goes on.

I am disgusted that they would cut AJ and Paget. They are both wonderful actresses and bring out different perspectives in the show. It won't be the same without them and neither will the ratings.

Why CBS would FIRE two actresses from the original show yet have a SPIN-OFF is just stupid and makes NO sense at all. They should keep the original really strong before deciding to have a spin-off.

And where would Garcia be without her girls?D:

CM fans have always been loyal. I can't wait to see how CBS reacts when a bunch of people ditch this awesome show because of a poorly-made choice on their part. Karma is suh~weet!

This is definitely number one on my list of worst mistakes CBS has ever made. I hope you know what you're doing; actually, no, you don't. You'll be wrecking the cast and messing with their awesome dynamic on the show AND in real life. Even they are quite upset and supporting each other through this. See what a strong bond they have? YOU DON'T MESS WITH THAT! Not ever!

We need more strong female characters - and it winds me up so that you think you can cut two. At the moment, I am training in the UK to become a Criminal Profiler over here. Do you have any idea what kind of looks I get when I say I am doing that? Maybe if there were more people like AJ/JJ and Paget/Emily on tv, I wouldn’t have to deal with the crap I get.

Reinstate AJ, and Bring here and Paget back on full time contractions, otherwise I will never watch another CBS production AGAIN

I love this show and have not missed one since the beginning - although I had to play catch-up because of Hurrican katrina. The show would not be the same without JJ and Prentiss. JJ holds the whole team together and Prentiss is just as good as any of the guys. How much money do you save if the whole show goes down. CBS is beginning to remind me of NBC - they sure don't know when they have a good thing. Do they have a deal to let NBC takeover their place. Hopefully they will reconsider this who dreadful idea.

I have read mostly all the comments and agree with what others are saying so no need to rehash it. I find it interesting that we have heard nothing from Ed Bernero. After Mandy Patinkin's sudden exit, he was quick to put a reassuring face on things, not so this time. Perhaps that says something. Do they want CM to fail? Has Ed grown tired of the show, hence the need to develop this idiotic spin-off, but instead of just leaving or canceling the show, the decision is made to downsize, first the team of excellent writers and now two actresses that are undoubtably pivotal to the show's success. That way it can die a slow and painful death due to lost ratings.

I've been trying to picture the show without the woman. Who will field the requests for the BAU, the already overworked Hotch, who's struggling to do his job wile attempting to raise Jack as a single parent? Morgan, who already questions many of the cases they do take? Rossi, doesn't strike me as the type and Reid would get so bogged down analyzing each request with his genius mind.

Once the four guys choose a case, however they decide that, and arrive at their destination, they're all anxious to concentrate on the profile and catch the unsub. Who will deal with, as JJ described it, the overworked homicide detective? Who will deal with the press? Who will deal with distraught family members and rape victims? Not Morgan, he's a man of action, not Reid, (as much as I adore him), he doesn't have the interpersonal communication skills. Do they want Rossi's already famous face in front of the cameras, adding more sensationalism to the unsub, or will it be something else that will fall on Hotch's plate?

Emily brings a female presence to the profiling team as well as a vast knowledge of languages and cultures which I think has proven invaluable and also she can kick ass with the best of them besides taking some strain off the already overworked Hotch.

JJ is not a profiler and she brings a human side to the profilers' tunnel vision. She is the soft, but oh so strong, thread that holds this team together and if that thread is cut, sadly, things are likely to unravel.

I am so upset about this I can hardly think, let alone write. Criminal Minds is my favourite show, and I've been with it from the very beginning. I love the focus on the team and they way they work together.

Dropping any of the cast is unnecessary and pointless; dropping 2 of the 3 women is nothing short of misogynist. JJ and Emily are strong, independent female characters who do their jobs professionally and with confidence - we need more like them, not less. JJ is the heart of the team, and Emily is an absolutely key team member. I cannot see how the team, and by extension, the show, can continue to function without them.

Are you trying to kill your best show CBS? Really?

And all for the sake of a really sucky spin-off that noboby wants and nobody likes.

Hi there. I decided to make a comment direct to CBS. I was just so angry when I saw the news.

I'm a brazilian fan, and believe me when I say this: CBS, the Criminal Minds fans from Brazil, HATE you.
That's the worst decision you ever made! Why mess with a perfect show? There's a saying here in Brazil that goes like this: When a team is winning, you don't change the players.
You should think about it.

CBS lost my respect, as a fan and as a woman. It's a dumb decision to cut actress who play strong female characters.
If they maintain their position, they'll destroy an awesome TV show, IMO, the best in it's gender.

In a recent and big criminal case here in Brazil, the prosecutor mentioned Criminal Minds while making his case to the jury. That's how great the tv serie is, and how people take it seriously, because it gives so much information to the viewers. Why destroy CM? The team is complete with the 7 characters, they complete each-other.

Please reconsider. It's not wise to ignore the fans.

I'll probably stop watching CM, and I won't even begin to mention the freaking spin-off. ¬¬"
I know that it means nothing to CBS ratings, but it matters when the importance of the show, while global, is discussed.

CM is one of the few worth watching TV series, because it's intelligent and serious, so I beg you, PLEASE, do not destroy it.

Each of the CM actors and actresses add their own special flavor the CM mix. They stand strong as individual characters but beautifully compliment one another. They each execute their role to perfection. If budget cuts are the reason for this terrible pending change, I would ask that CBS reevaluate; there are so many other avenues to pursue. CM should remain as it has been - a wonderfully diverse cast who compliment each other in every important way. I have high respect and admiration for the entire CM enterprise should they choose to sacrifice the talents of Ms. Cook, Ms. Brewster or any of the other cast, crew, writers or producers. They have the absolute in loyalty from us; it should be reciprocated.

I am deeply deeply disappointed in CBS' decision to fire AJ Cook and reduce Paget Brewster's role. These actresses and the characters they play are not expendable. They are not replaceable. And I am appalled that the execs at CBS who made this decision believe that they are.

I don't want to pull Criminal Minds off my DVR. I don't want to pull every CBS show I watch off my DVR. But I will. I cannot support a show, or a network, that treats its women so cavalierly.

I hope that those in power at CBS will realize their mistake and rectify it.

Way to repay fans who've invested years in these characters, CBS.

I started watching this show because of AJ, and although I was disappointed when Elle left, I was thrilled when Paget joined the cast.

These characters make this show. Every single one of them. (I was under the impression that this show was about a team, after all.) It makes no sense to cripple a show so successful that it spawned a spinoff, and to use "creative reasons" as a justification for it.

Had this actually been about creative reasons, then any lack of plot for JJ & Emily would be the fault of the writers. (Might have been a good idea not to axe the show's best writers. Just sayin'.)

But this isn't creative; it's financial. The loss of these characters seems like the final nail in the coffin for CM, and pissed off fans won't be so eager to support what appears to be a craptastic spinoff. (A British guy & an ex-con working for the FBI? Really?) This is a good move financially only if CBS wants both shows to tank.

As for cutting these characters specifically, JJ is the most human team member of all. She picks the cases, briefs the team, and comforts victims and families. I can't imagine Hotch leading this team without JJ's support, and I find it pretty ironic now that Jordan, JJ's temporary replacement, ended her run by pointing out to Hotch how valuable JJ is to the team. Which just makes bringing in a new actress to replace her all the more offensive.

And Emily Prentiss? Emily Prentiss is a BAMF who is every bit as capable and intelligent as her male peers, trust.

The women on this show--the actresses and the characters they play--are the best on network TV. They're smart, strong, and confident, and that is so ridiculously rare in a show like CM. It's disgusting and heartbreaking to me that CBS seems to think these women are expendable, when they're every bit as vital to the success of this show as any of the men. (Incidentally, I'm convinced that the only thing that spared Garcia was her friendship with Morgan--which, if true, is equally disgusting.)

These women are fierce, and they deserve every bit as much screen time as their male counterparts. Not only that, but getting rid of JJ & making Emily a ghost means that the majority of women we see in the show will be rape and murder victims.

TV needs characters like JJ & Emily and actresses like AJ & Paget to bring them to life. No matter what The Powers That Be may think now, the thing this show can't afford is to lose them.

Anonymous said...

A&E is currently showing "Plain Sight." There's a scene where Elle is at the home of a woman who's just been raped, and she announces that she's going to go talk to the victim. When asked why by the detective on scene, she answers, "Because she's surrounded by men."

And that's just one example of how important these women are to this show, and why it won't survive without them.

This is the kind of thing that kills a show: cutting main characters to satisfy other agendas. Maybe there are credible reasons for doing so but I certainly can't see them. For me, Criminal Minds was as much about the characters and their interactions as it was the cases. I just can't imagine the show without AJ! She and Paget were my favorite two on the show and if one is dropped and the other is cut back, I won't be tuning in anymore. It's like with CSI, when Sara and Grissom left, I tuned out. I love Laurence Fishburne, he's a brilliant actor but Langston bugs the heck out of me and it frustrated me so much that all the focus was on the new CSI elevating him to fill Grissom's status while Catherine (who was finally the shift supervisor) was ignored and minimized. The professions encompassed in both shows are very male-dominated fields and to see the strong female characters pushed to the side is enough to make me want to scream. I've barely watched CSI since the cast changes, tuning in just a few times this season to see Jorja Fox's return but overall, I was severely disappointed.
The cast makes a show, even in a crime-based show such as Criminal Minds. CSI is one prime CBS example, but cast changes destroyed another of my favorite shows (One Tree Hill) and I have not even considered watching an episode of the new season because of the disappearance of two main characters. If AJ is dropped and Paget is cut back, I won't be tuning in any more, and I won't be alone in that decision. Trust me, I make good on my promises.

Anonymous said...

I just found out and I'm definitely in shock. I cannot believe this. AJ deserves to be in this show.

Anonymous said...

It's bad enough that they fired AJ and want to push Paget to the side. But to just ignore all the fan outcry? They can't say something..anything? They jusy keep proving that not only do they not care about the actors or the shows..they could care less about us the fans!
Well, to hell with them! Keep AJ Cook, Keep Paget Brewster! If not I swear I nor my family wll ever watch CBS again for any reason!

Well, thank God I didn't cancel my Blockbuster Online subscription. It seems I will have another night of the week to rent DVDs, since my favourite show will now be worthless. *sigh* As much as I love the guys, I can't relate to them. No one watches a show without a character they can relate to on some level. I don't know what's the bigger insult, pushing out AJ Cook and Paget Brewster or "replacing" Ms. Cook as if she's a tire that went flat. Just slap another one on and we're as good as before. I think not. Criminal Minds has succeeded, for the most part, almost in spite of CBS. Now they may have finally found a way to kill it. Congratulations CBS. I hope all of you rot in the unemployment line, you greedy bastards. One question, though. I've heard you dropped twelve million on the pilot for a remake of Hawaii Five-O, so you could keep Alex O'Laughlin working for you. Is that true? No, you don't look like misogynistic jerks at all, now. Fire the women and make sure the men have all the money/job security they will ever need. Perhaps if you weren't so free with the ducats for the guys, you wouldn't need to fire the women to avoid bankruptcy.

Many people on this site have already aptly expressed how I felt when I discovered CBS was cutting A.J. Cook and diminishing the number of Paget Brewster's episodes on "Criminal Minds"--I was stunned, in shock, disappointed, and then outraged.

I can honestly say that, if these two fine actresses who portray interesting and, most importantly, STRONG female characters in what is one of my favorite shows, I will stop watching. This ensemble cast will lose its charismatic energy, and quite frankly, taking two female characters we as fans have grown to love and admire for years simply to usher in another "revolving-door female" for "creative reasons" (which also, coincidentally, will probably save the station a chunk of cash), shows that CBS executives are not paying attention to what viewers want. Most of the time, this is what happens--viewers are disregarded, despite the fact that we alone are the ones who supply the ratings that allow your TV shows to run. For some reason, we as consumers are not considered at all when it comes to decisions like this.

But please, look at the numbers. Currently there is a petition with 34,550 signatures, and it is growing by at least 1,000 signatures per day (this is not an exaggeration). Here is said petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?cmwomen. So is this "creative cutting" really a wise choice?

Please don't destroy a quality show by removing these two fine women, whatever the reasons. If you do, I will not be returning as a viewer, nor will I buy anymore DVD sets or products affiliated with CBS.

Thank you for your time.

Why give him two million an episode to piss away on drugs and legal fees, when you could keep two, intellegent, phenominal women instead?

You could be your own network CBS and stop trying to be like NBC's Law and Order franchise! I have to say that as a loyal fan the last 5 seasons, I will no longer watch this show if my two favorite characters get cut!!

Anonymous said...

Ok, I know everyone is pretty much saying the same thing here, but WT*? Seriously. Criminal Minds is already male centered, and they want to cut two out of the three women off?
It is a slightly misogynistic show as it is. For instance, most of the times women take care of children victims. I can rationalize that, mother figure and all that stuff, but then, JJ was literally accused by Morgan of taking an interest on a case because she was a mother (has such an accusation ever made against Hotch?). And then only Prentiss backed her up. And finally the mother of one of the victims thanked ONLY the female characters. Do we all remember that episode?
They have four different inputs from the male point of view, they’re going to leave just one female point of view on the show? And, sorry if I am offending anyone, that would be Garcia’s? The authors make a joke out of her character already. Do we need to recall the oh so cute guy that was after her and ended up wanting to kill her? Or the shopping spree last season? Or the fact that she’s the only one that needs “protecting” whilst the other two can take care of themselves? Or that she screams or cries when she’s scared? Are you kidding me? That’s the female role model they’re choosing? Sure, cut the working mother off, cut the independent single woman off. Leave the perky, defenseless one.
Both Prentiss and JJ bring a depth to the show that can’t be achieved by only having Garcia and a female special appearance every now and then.
And, I’m sorry, but budget is the problem? Really? And it will be solved by cutting actresses off?
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. I heard in an interview that CBS was always cutting CM budget because the show still delivered. Ok, let’s watch them deliver without women on the show. Let’s see if the apparent last season can be decent without women.
If they are out, I’m out as a viewer. Which clearly has zero importance to CBS.

AJ & Paget are wonderfully talented actresses. Cutting/Reducing them from the show is absolutely ridiculous! I don't understand why a great tv show needs to be "fixed." Removing these ladies won't be "fixing" anything anyway! The current 7 cast members are a Family with great chemistry and should not be destroyed. I was happy when Elle left and not disappointed with Gideon's leaving. As much as I love the guys, the 3 ladies are what makes the show come together. There is no good reason whatsoever to remove/replace/reduce any of the cast members, especially AJ & Paget! Whoever came up with that idea at CBS should be fired!

I think it would be a mistake to let these two go. There are enough male dominated shows on TV and I will not continue to watch one of my favorite shows become another example. Prentiss and JJ are a huge part of why I love this show and if they go, I will not continue to watch.

I don't understand the mind set of these exes. If it is age, that is so stupid. I am so tired because someone isn't 20 something that the rest of us "older" people have no opinions on anything. This world isn't made up of "young people"! I know of many "Old" people that watch a variety of TV including AI. The new spinoff "Washington Town"? doesn't interest me at all from what I've seen of the cast. Even the most current spinoffs don't have the character of the more seasoned shows.

It's not money as Criminal Minds is wanted in Europe and in syndication here plus DVD sales. Look at the items being auctioned off on EBAY for the Cancer Society! We don't need to have some execs "precious pet" or some romance/sex angle either on the show. "If it ain't broke don't fix it"! Maybe somebody needs to be put out to pasture!

I LOVE JJ and Emily!!! I don't care who the new character is that they are planning on bringing into the show, she CANNOT replace these two amazing characters! Together, each and every character completes the show so well and just taking out one will be destructive. I have never watched a show where the characters have such great chemistry!! Why would CBS feel the need to just rip this awesome cast apart....money is my guess. If they need to save money that badly get rid of the spin off...geesh

Anonymous said...

Paget Brewster is soooooooo great!!! Why would CBS want to reduce the number of episodes that she appears in? And AJ is also great and they cut her completely....this is just terrible. The only show that I actually keep up-to-date with and CBS decides to save a little bit of money..not impressed. They might as well just cancel the show because that is the road that they are heading on.

Julie said...

Definitely repeating but the idiots at CBS don't seem to get it otherwise. What an incredibly sexist and ridiculous decision and I would hope it reversed. Yes I love hotch and rossi. But I also love Emily and jj's role should not be overlooked. As a woman I want to Dee other strong female characters; gives it realism and we all know women think differently. Give us pb full time! No replacement for aj. Is this really the reputation u want CBS??!

I am disgusted that they would even THINK about taken two of the main characters off of the show. I dont think that I will ever watch Criminal Minds EVER again without the two of them why mess with perfection? I am sure that we ALL agree on her we want both Paget and AJ as FULL time member of the cast.

Anonymous said...

Please see reason CBS! Can't you tell that we all want to keep AJ and Paget? Doesn't what the fans want matter?

Meri L said...

I am not sure why they need to fire one strong, core member of the group and reduce the episodes of another member for "creative" reasons. If they're that hard up for ideas and directions to take the show, they maybe need to hire new writers. CM works so well because it is a fabulous ensemble. Each member brings something unique and special and the chemistry between the group is not seen on many shows. I'm not watching the spinoff, I'm sick of cut and paste tv...three CSIs, another NCIS...yes CBS knows "creativity". I really didn't like the character of Jordan Todd and we knew she was just a temporary replacement. She didn't have the same chemistry with the core group. Heck, the writers could head over to fanfiction sites for ideas if they need some ideas. If they keep this creative direction, that's where I'll be getting my CM fix.

I abhor this decision! It is sexist and wrong and it clearly show that CBS does not care about the fans!

AJ going? Why her?
It would spark things up much more to get rid of Thomas Gibson's character. The actor has always been fairly wooden but his CM character has been run into the ground. AJ is hardly developed at all by comparison

Anonymous said...

CM is an amazing show because of the ENTIRE cast and how well they work together. The fact that CBS wants to cut off two very vital female characters is disgusting because they're still willing to pay Charlie Sheen $2 million an episode when he doesn't deserve it. AJ and Paget are amazing role models and their characters are strong, smart, beautiful women. Every single person on that show is important, even Rossi, though some people dont agree. What's not important? A spin-off. Who wants to see that when CBS is willing to ruin the original?

Mary MacPhee said...

I realize that showbiz is a brutal biz and sometimes hard choices are to be made but I am baffled. This show is not in ratings trouble. It has weathered cast changes before. These were of the actors' own doings. It was tough and everybody banded together and they became tight. The characters became a family. Yes, I know changes happen in real life, well, guess what, you had the changes happen on the show too. You've already had your changes in the cast. Enough is enough. Cuts can be made elsewhere, cut out the name guest stars, there is plenty of unknown fantastic talent out there. I'm sure they'd be much cheaper. Cut down the location shoots. Even lose the jet. These are just the on camera changes. I'm sure there are many other behind the scenes cuts that could be made. The cast is the face of the show. No matter what anybody says, if the audience doesn't click with the cast it won't click with the show no matter how wonderful the writing is. A wonderful cast and team will enable the writers to work out any troubles they have. The fans will have the patience.

Now I know most fans will have no opinion one way or the other about this. That's okay. They probably don't know anything about this. But CM averages, what, about 12.5-13.5 million viewers a week. That's a lot of repeat, loyal people. Those opinions should count for something. There are a few nasty people online who are dancing in the streets in antcipation of these proposed changes. I am surely not one of them. I would be more concerned about these people than the fan that gives love and support and constructive criticism when it is needed. Here is some constructice criticism: DON'T MAKE THESE CHANGES.

The show isn't prfect but JJ and Emily are not the problem. The problems should be fixed in the writers' room by dealing with what you have. Come on, people, we all know you are capable of good writing. We've seen it. Eliminating JJ and reducing Emily is just the easy way out. You people are up to the challenge of writing for them. Write for Agents Jareau and Prentiss. There are many stories left for the I'm sure that don't even involve gender issues. C'mon, you've got it in you. I know you do.

But as I am writing this 12:19 PM EDT, June 21, I checked another site and apparently all is for nought. CBS is standing firm on booting AJ. Ed's trying to get her back for one episode. Guess he tried. I want an explanation. I figured it would end this way.

SHIT.

I can imagine how many complaints CBS has received in response to the recent Criminal Minds announcements. Please add this to the pile.

I believe the original reasoning for the loss of JJ Jarreau and the loss of screen time for Emily Prentiss had something to do with finances. To that end I began researching ratings, demographics, popularity vs. share and those shows that had/have enjoyed the longest runs. This involved statistics. Statistics involve math. I was promised there would be no math and my willingness to expose myself to math is a mighty indicator of my dedication to the salvation of Criminal Minds.

Armed with statistical information I was prepared to present a pecuniary argument that would be compelling, persuasive and enlighten CBS to the error of their ways.

One need not have a finely tuned grasp of mathematics to appreciate the magnitude of the chatter in response to the recent announcements. Obviously the network's executive decision has set off a hue and cry of almost biblical proportions. I assume that they are aware that the reactions are not positive.
I believe that "financial considerations" have now been replaced by "creative differences". I have no pity for the executive that floated the "financial considerations" excuse. I'm sure he/she did not anticipate the blowback that would be directed toward the first offspring in the Criminal Minds franchise. FYI: Never send an accountant to do a PR job. JJ Jarreau would have handled it perfectly.

In a perfect world most "creative differences" can be resolved using common sense. With their recent decisions CBS is showing a lack of common sense, sound judgement and little regard for their viewers.

In the past CBS has enjoyed the
successful launch and acceptance of their primetime franchises. They were quick to establish that the new shows would not threaten the integrity of the original show or the cast members of those shows.

The decision to eliminate a character or decrease character involvement on Criminal Minds is a disastrous franchise misstep by CBS.

My arguments in defense of the characters of JJ and Emily would merely be repetitive of recent comments. Both characters are vital to the team and critical to the team's success. The characters are believable. The characters are representative of real women and not a testosterone driven interpretation of a real woman. Honey, they can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Plus they are in the highly desirable 34-49 year old female demographic.

The addition of a new female character frightens me and threatens the balance of the team. I'm anticipating blinding cleavage and tottering around crime scenes on 3 inch stilettos.
Please do not add another female caricature to primetime.

The addition of a new female character will not be enhanced by the loss of 2 well defined and respected characters. The acceptance and survival of a new female character will not be guaranteed with the loss of 2 strong female characters.

I hope CBS will not fix what isn't broken and respect the opinions of their viewers. Change is not always good.

I am appalled and hurt by CBS' decision to dramatically alter the balance, the dynamics and the relationships within the CM team, both on-screen and off-screen.

CM is (was) special not only because it is different to the rest of the shows in the genre out there, but mainly because the chemistry between the cast and the characters they play is undeniable. By altering this, CBS is altering a very important aspect of the show; and this is something I, as a Criminal Minds fan, will not take or accept kindly (I'm certain many share this feeling, as evidenced by the sheer number of comments and signatures in this blog, the petition, and other avenues)

Had the decision to leave or have a reduced screen time been A.J. or Paget's; I would honour and respect their decision. But to blatantly fire one of them and reduce someone else's screen time masquerading it as financial or creative differences is plain out callous and idiotic.

If this changes are made to favour the CM spin-off, then even worse so. To irremediably damage a well loved, highly rated show in favour of a spin off almost everyone has reacted unfavourably to is not only foolish, but terribly disrespectful to the cast, the staff and the fans of the original.

As well, introducing a new character to replace two which were let go and gotten reduced roles under alleged "financial reasons" absolutely defeats the point.

The reasons why A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster should stay and the ensemble remain unchanged have been stated several times, probably more eloquently than I have. However, if these changes do take place, I'm no longer watching Criminal Minds.

This is ridiculous! The show just wouldn't be the same without AJ & Paget on full-time. I also don't understand how there can be budget cuts, yet it's rumored that another female will be joining the show. That doesn't make sense to me. I hope everyone keeps fighting for them & that it makes a difference!

Ok first off I don't want AJ back for just one episode I want her back completely. Secondly they cannot ignore the fans forever, these statements should be coming directly from CBS or Ed Bernaro the shows producer not unrelated websites. Frankly it is an insult to all the loyal fans who allow the show to come back season after season. Thirdly if we are not getting AJ back completely it can't be done in one episode that is not justice for the fans or her.

Why do you need to cut only the females?! There are many males already on the show. At least if you want to cut costs, do it equally.

I am extremely displeased and upset with CBS, and will not continue to watch CM next season without Paget or AJ.

Lena said...

Dear CBS,

After learning that you have decided to cut the cast of Criminal Minds, I've been rather shocked and upset. Some reports are saying it's financial, while others are saying it was for "creative" reasons. However, whatever the reason, I think this is a decision that will have a very negative effect on not just the viewers, but CBS Entertainment as well.

The Criminal Minds cast has wonderful dynamics, and although their characters are fictional, they are still a family. This show is the only one I enjoy watching, and I rarely turn on my television unless it is to watch Criminal Minds. The show itself is what inspired me to consider obtaining a criminology degree... it's been extremely informational, but information can come from books, too. The cast and dynamics of the show are what keep many viewers coming back again and again. It's the reason we spend money on the show (such as buying the seasons on DVD, as I have done).

Cutting out AJ Cook and allowing less airtime for Paget Brewster, who are both extremely talented, is, in my opinion, a huge mistake. If it is financial, then I can certainly understand that CBS must be between a rock and a hard place, but the negative effects of this decision will far outweigh any money you could save by breaking up the Criminal Minds family. If it is, in fact, for creative reasons, then I urge you to pay more attention to the shows that appear on your station. Criminal Minds has been bursting with creativity from the first day it has aired. Why else do you think it has come so popular? It would not appeal to so many people if the production crew and the actors weren't doing everything right. Please do not try to fix something that is already wonderful as it is.

Last, but certainly not least, Criminal Minds is AJ Cook's and Paget Brewster's income. Regardless of whether they make a good amount of money, it is still their income, and whether you are a factory worker or a well known actress, it is difficult to lose your income. So please don't just consider the fans, but please consider the lives of these actresses, too. They've worked for you for so long and have put their faith in you, and they must be hurt. Please consider that.

I sincerely hope you go back on this decision and keep the entire Criminal Minds cast intact. If not, I genuinely feel sorry for the loss you will suffer as a result.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Lena.

I just read somewhere that CBS is refusing to budge on their decision to let AJ go. All I can say is that is complete bull. I love the other cast members dearly so it kills be to say that I will no longer be watching the show. As much as I hate to say this, I really, really hope that I am not the only one and that there are enough of us out there to REALLY damage the show. I hate to say this because I know its punishing the others as well, but its the only way CBS will get the message. I still can't believe they did this and my level of hatred for the network is at an all time high. The only show I will continue to watch is NCIS, but you can bet that I won't be watching any other shows. If I weren't so hopelessly obsessed with Mark Harmon I would boycott CBS all together, but you can bet I won't be watching any of their new shows that I might have been interested in otherwise.

This is the weakest excuse I've ever heard for axing cast members. If they really want to cut down on "costs", then don't make a damn Spin-Off!!The ENTIRE team are integral to the dynamics of the show, and this will absolutely crucify it,which is so dissapointing as it is one of the only interesting shows on tv.

I keep waiting and hoping CBS will come out and realize the mistake they are making with all the fan support for AJ and Paget.

If it is financial reasons, why not make 1 or 2 fewer episodes this season? I would gladly take a 20 or 21 episode season with ALL cast members than a 23 episode season with no AJ and little bit o' Paget.

CBS NEEDS to reconsider this decision. Plain and simple. CBS will lose much of a very dedicated fan base if they go through with this. Screw the spinoff!
The cast is at it's best, why shoot them down in their prime? Is there any kind of petition or something that I can sign? because I'll do it! This is a very SEXIST and IMMATURE move to make. I really hope that this doesn't happen, because the show will be on the fast track to cancellation if this happens, and i REALLY don't want that! This is one of the only shows I watch on TV and now people have to go and screw it up because they can't figure their shit out. RIDICULOUS!

Dear CBS... and Nina Tassler:

As a viewer of Criminal Minds since season one I would like to speak my mind.

I am trying really hard to understand why a major corporation concerned with ratings insist on cutting one of the very people , AJ Cook, that help to enable those high ratings on the show Criminal Minds. And to severely reduce the episodes that Paget Brewster appears in, yet another major contributor to high ratings.
These actresses are needed to keep those ratings and to further improve viewership. It is my belief that she shows ratings and network will suffer if these actions are taken.

No one person keeps the ratings of a show in the top ten, but I believe it is a collaborative effort amongst the entire cast. Each member contributes something different to the show. They compliment one another and I believe that some of the shows ambience will be lost if not all of the cast are present in every episode.

The show that I was working for (on another network) was cancelled because of inappropriate casting. Cast members tend to make or break a show.

I and other fans implore you, please do not take the ladies of Criminal Minds, AJ Cook and Paget Brewster, out of the show in any shape or form. The also represent women everywhere in that they are proud, independent and stong characters in the show.

Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,

I have already posted my comments on other sites and to CBS but here goes.

I watch the show for the chemistry and camaraderie between the characters. Plot is second. To eliminate two of the most important actors (characters) from the show, will put a kibosh on my viewing. The one character that could be played by just about any one is the nerdy computer analyst and that is the one they are keeping? It was sad enough when Patinkin left. His character was warm and caring and they replaced him with Mantegna - whose character is an uncaring, "cold fish". Now, to end one of the most vital character's and limit another's appearances has done it for me. The story lines have never been that impressive. A redo and update of old detective shows from the past - just with a "profiler spin" and more blood and gore. There is enough of these type of shows that I won't even miss not watching. Just switch to another station and another cop/detective show.

SPIN-OFF?! Won't be watched in this house - neither will CM without A.J.and Paget.

I had a lot to say, but no matter how much I write it all boils down to one thought....

THIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA! If CBS goes ahead with this outrage, you can count me out of any future airings, product sales, and support. And that goes for ALL CBS shows.

The cast and characters are a TEAM. Those team dynamics are what makes the show work, and continually do well in ratings, over and above other shows.

and for what it's worth.....ditch the spin off! I personally thought the one episode was very poor, and I certainly wouldn't be watching it, (even without this debarcle)

Sophie said...

CBS I don't know how you sleep at night, trying to get rid of these two wonderful, talented women! These women have given you years of committment and a fantastic top rating show and not asked for anything in return.

How can you even think of doing this to them after what they have done for Criminal Minds? People don't just tune in for the guys, but for the caring and compassion the women show! The fact that the women get shown as equals to the men is fantastic! And yet you're cutting down Paget's screentime? She plays the only female profiler on the show and yet you try to cut down her screen time? Don't you want women to be able to see that they CAN become an FBI profiler if they want to? Or be a successful working mom like AJ's JJ?

Ms Tassler, as a woman shouldn't you care about women's rights and showing women as equal to men? Why aren't you fighting for these women along with the rest of us? You should be disgusted at what is being done to AJ and Paget. Except it's you that is doing this. How do you live with yourself? How do you sleep at night? Do you not feel any shame in this decision? You must have worked hard to get to the position you are in now, it wouldn't have been easy in a male dominated industry. Yet you make the decision to fire or reduce the screen time of many female actors. A half decent psychologist might conclude that you resent these women for how far they have come, for how everyone knows their names and not yours. You seem intent on getting rid of Criminal Minds even though it is doing really well for CBS. You've gotten rid of some fantastic writers, you tried to get rid of Thomas Gibson and here you are again trying to get rid of cast members only this time it's the women in your sights. What have they ever done to you?

Both AJ and Paget have been severely underused and their firing and reduced screentime will impact on CBS's ratings. I don't know much about tv but even I know that lower ratings will cost CBS and when CBS look at who to blame, it will be you Ms Tassler. You are the one who signs off on any decisions so you are the one who will pay the price when the fall out from this comes down. The only person who can stop this is you. Give AJ Cook her job back and make sure that both women are full time cast members, no reduced screen time.

If you think fans will let this go you are very much mistaken and it will be on your head when masses of fans stop watching your shows because of what you are doing to AJ and Paget. And it won't just be Criminal minds that people stop watch but ALL of your shows. Imagine 13+ million people boycotting your shows, just in the US. Then imagine what is happening overseas. If ratings go down overseas the broadcasters there will not order more seasons from CBS. That will cost CBS a lot of money. When CBS look at who made the decision that starts this mess, they will find that it is you Ms Tassler. Just think about what your bosses will do then.

Still a week after hearing the utterly horrendous news that I first thought was a crazy rumor I'm still in shock!

How could CBS treat someone the way they've treated AJ and Paget?!

CBS - you have a very popular show and one of the reasons it is so popular is because of the amazing cast. And because it is one of few shows that show women on equal terms with men.

Why take away such fantastic role models?

And why aren't you aknowleging the fans? Doesn't what we want count?
Obviously not...

But remember this... No fans = No show!

What is it with CBS? AJ was one of the longest running characters and Paget the newest so the commonality is that they are female. Do I sense sexism here?
I must be a poor judge since I was overwhelmed at loosing Keifer Sutherland with 24 then I discovered Criminal Minds. The characters mesh so well with each other so how can CBS chop off two of the main roots. I've continued with CBS despite some of their changes and realize that they do not listen to public opinion nor petitions. I feel that I must look to this network like a drug addiction if they make this change in Criminal Minds and just block that network entirely.

Just read an interview that Ed Bernero gave in Feb 2007 in which he describes the characters and their roles within the family. Quote: Gideons the 'Mom'the emotional center of the show, Hotch is the Dad, Morgan and Elle are the Brother and Sister, Reid is the little Brother and "J.Js THE GOOD LOOKING COUSIN WHO HANGS AROUND" unquote.
This just shows what Mr Bernero thought of the character and hence the lack of stories given to her. I'm starting to think this was a joint decision by CBS and ED and if it was then Mr Bernero you just shot yourself in the foot and helped in the downfall of a wonderful series.

Television today needs strong female characters and you can't do any better than AJ & Paget!

Paget deserves better and so do we fans. Emily Prentiss = FULL TIME!

I adore Criminal Minds. And, ok, maybe it's 'cause I'm slightly obsessed with all those crime dramas - CSI:NY, Bones, Flashpoint - but Criminal Minds is the one that started it all. And Criminal Minds is the one that holds the spot of my Number One Favourite Show Ever.
Why? Not because of the gory crimes or disturbing UnSubs. But because of the cast. The characters are awesome, funny, genius. They get along so well and are great to watch. They're not just mechanical crime-solvers. They have lives, and feelings, and sarcasm. And that rocks.
This year - ninth grade French class - we had to do a presentation (in French) on a famous person. You know who I chose? AJ Cook. I was the only kid in the class who didn't choose Taylor Swift or Taylor Lautner. I got an extra mark for creativity.
And why did I choose AJ Cook? Because she's in the most awesome show ever, representing one of the most awesome characters ever. She's gorgeous and confident and smart and strong. And I think you really need that, on TV, when you compare it to all the other "role models" girls have now...Bella Swan, who has a vampire child at 18? Yeah. I'll still with JJ.
And NOW they want to get RID of JJ? (And Prentiss, to boot?) That's ridiculous. AJ Cook and Paget Brewster need to stay. I can't believe they'd even consider ditching those two!

I know what is this!!!! It's because that A_TEAM movie, right? All guys in action (PG in in her cuartel) no action girl!! I knew it! 4 guys: the leader-the weird one-the handsome- the rude. Our guys fit in one and more of this clichès, but no woman here in the field! so bye JJ and Emily! Damn reboots!

I've already posted about not being happy by the changes planned for CM on here briefly. I had the afternoon off work today & don't do football so I ended up writing 3 poems in support of the Saving the Criminal Minds Sisterhood :) Feel free to have a gander at them on my blog www.htlroach.blogspot.com
and you're more than welcome to comment on them or pass them on, just be so kind as to mention I wrote them cheers :) Take care all :) x

Dear CBS,

I would like start this letter by telling you that for many years now, CBS had been the network that has produced many of my favourite shows, however, in the last month your company has cancelled one and made changes to another that is going to see that show fall.

While the cancellation of Ghost Whisperer upset me, it caused me no way near the pain that I felt when I heard the news about AJ Cook being fired and Paget Brewster having her role reduced in Criminal Minds. Now, you may think that feeling pain about a television show is silly, but you see, Criminal Minds is much more than just a television show to so many people around the world. To us, Criminal Minds is a family, and as said in Criminal Minds, You do whatever it takes to protect your family. And we will.

If your network continues with its plan to fire AJ and reduce Paget’s role then the whole dynamic of the show is going to be taken away. A dynamic, which for the past five years has kept Criminal Minds on top of the ratings. While yes, you can take each member of the team as an individual, it is when they all come together that the show really blossoms.

Although you may not have noticed, but when AJ was away from the show on maternity leave, something was just…missing. Throughout the episodes with her replacement, we fans looked forward to the day she returned, and the five minute scene where JJ brought her son into the BAU was like all of our birthdays and Christmases had come at once. Our team was back together. Back together how they should be. AJ and JJ bring the light to a dark situation. Both AJ and JJ give the female viewers someone to relate to. Exactly how would the team function without a Media Liaison for however many episodes your network is thinking? You can say that a new character will be brought in, and yes, a new character could be brought in, but that would not be JJ. That would not be AJ. The fans want JJ, and if this really is for “Creative Reason”, explore the character of JJ. So much more could be done with her, and you keep your fans happy – the people who make you money, happy. Doesn’t everybody win then?

Then there is Paget and Emily Prentiss. To me, the character of Emily Prentiss is who I aspire to be. She has worked her way to the top of the job I want to do. She is a strong intelligent women, with enough humanity to do what she believes is right instead of what will get her to the top. When I first found out that there would be a new character in Criminal Minds to replace Elle Greenaway, I wasn’t sure what to think, but with Paget on board, the show finally found its stride and she brought out everything that we love about the show. If Paget is in reduced episodes…well, that strong role model that girls look up to will suddenly be obliterated. Can you really justify doing that to a show that works?

As for AJ and Paget? Well, they are two of the most amazing actresses I have ever come across. If either of these women wanted to they could be the most famous in Hollywood, but they are not after fame and fortune. They still act for the love of acting. They are committed to their crew, fans and the rest of their cast. Your network should see themselves as what they are – extremely lucky to have them on your team, instead of working for the competition.

Michaela said...

You may think that we are just passionate or worried about the actresses, well, you are wrong. We are scared about the show as a whole. Criminal Minds has got where it is because of its realism and its loyalty to the fact that they are a family. I have no doubts in my mind that if AJ and Paget do not return to Criminal Minds full time, it will be the beginning of the end for a show that has finally found its feet up against some tough competition.

Now I am going to ask, no, I am going to beg that you reconsider your decision to fire AJ and reduce Paget’s episode count. I absolutely love Criminal Minds, and I look forward to it every week, but I know that without our two female leads, I would just not be able to watch, because it would not be the Criminal Minds that I have grown to love. And to say that absolutely kills me.

So please listen to the fans of the show. We do not what we are talking about when it comes to Criminal Minds, and I know that you are probably sick of the constant phone calls, emails and faxes. If AJ and Paget are reinstated in their original capacity for the next season, and anymore thereafter, they will stop immediately. We know that CBS can do this – after all, you brought television show Jericho back after it was cancelled. Criminal Minds isn’t failing so please do not send it down that route.

Yours sincerely,
Michaela Hapgood

I have gone cold turkey from Criminal Minds and CBS. It wasn't hard starting tonight with that deplorable spin off pilot "The Fight". With everything that has happened this last week it got me thinking about Ed Bernardo and Chris Mundy. As the show runner's of CM and the spin off plus being part of the writing team they have definitely stretched themselves to thin with the other writers being fired last year and now having to write for a second show. Ed indicated sometime previously that he wanted to right a man's show. I think he probably pushed for this so that he could write that type of show. I don't think they have learned that it is the team interactions as well as the drama / suspense that people tune in for. CM needs the feminine interaction to soften the content. The female interaction of characters we are invested in not some new bimbo character brought in to "spice" things up. I believe they and CBS have totally underestimated the viewers. I love this show and am so sad they are going down this road. AJ and Padget are terrific actresses and deserve so much better than the treatment they are receiving. It is sad that the whole cast will end up suffering due to these actions which apparently blindsided all of them.

dormsibb Ironic. My daughter and I were discussing CM after the season finale, three weeks ago. We were talking about how it was both of our FAVORITE show, and I expressed to her my uneasiness that you might try to tamper with the cast. I felt it was almost too good to be true. My daughter reassured me that CBS was not like the OTHER cold-blooded/not-so-bright network exec's who disrespected THEIR fans. We agreed that CM was perfect with its cast exactly as it was, and that CBS would not tamper with that; I mean, why fix it if it ain't broke, right? WRONG!!! Boy, were we wrong. So, my 3 daughters and I have vowed to NEVER watch another episode of CM if JJ and Emily are no longer full-time members of BAU. (I'm even more upset because we just convinced and got my other two daughters hooked on the series since the beginning of Season 5.)

One of the things I've liked most about the show, was how women were taken seriously by both characters and actors/actresses.

They were not just pretty faces but real characters and they kick ass!
If the show will be focused on the men only, I will def stop watching, even if I love Gubler & the other guys.

I don't understand the politics of network culture, but is it possible ( as some commenters have suggested ) that CBS is actually trying to destroy CM? If they were, then that would explain why they choose to mess with such an awesome cast. I just don't understand why they would want to kill of such an otherwise excellent show that is so strongly loved by the fans.

Anonymous said...

Have you never heard the saying "if it isn't broken, Don't fix it"? This is one of the highest, if not THE highest rated shows out there. Why on earth would you go and mess up what is so obviously working so well? The cast dynamics is beautiful to see. It would be an absolute shame to destroy that. I consider myself a diehard CM fan, but if you do this I will boycott CM.

Anonymous said...

Please keep the BAU women--- All three of them!!! If you ignore your CM fans, who (like myself I believe) are fanatically loyal to the ENTIRE gang of 7, I am convinced that you will kill off this series. Is that what you want to do? Please reconsider and keep both AJ AND Paget full time on the show---WE LOVE THEM.

CBS must be absolute morons. It's ok to give the wife bashing misogynist Charlie Sheen a raise to $2million per episode but things are so grim that the need to cut to strong, female characters from CM? BULLS**T!

Anonymous said...

Transfer AJ Cook and Paget Brewster to the spinnoff to help it gets its footing. No one likes the new show as it is. A lot of fans would watch then. It is obvious by the reaction that the girls have a ton of fans. I hope that is CBS's plan. This whole mess could be this season's cliff hanger.

If not, I won't be watching any new episodes. CBS lost one viewer here.

At first I thought this was a cheap marketing trick of CBS to keep the fans talking and busy during the summer break. Well, turns out it wasn’t. I still can’t believe that CBS is serious about this. This is just ridiculous.

Anyway, so while all the years ago I pre-ordered my CM DVDs at the first possible date, I haven’t done so this year. At first I was only hesitant because I didn’t really like season 5, but after this stunt I don’t think I will buy the DVDs at all. It’s my way to boycott CBS and not letting them earn money.

If all the fans who have already pre-ordered their DVDs would cancel their orders, I think this would send a strong signal to CBS. It’s a direct way to hit them where it hurts. Don’t let them make any further money from us fans when they value their own employees and their fans so little to treat them like that.

It appears that slowly but surely the cast is getting replaced or removed - Gideon, now Prentiss and J.J

Bad decision, guys! And a spin-off show? Seriously??

Don't remove Prentiss and J.J. Yes, Prentiss didn't really fit in when she first joined, but come season 5, things warmed up and a good relationship was created between her and the team. J.J's role was expanded and we saw more of her, learnt more about her - it would be very stupid to remove her, esp. when Reid and Garcia are godparents to her child.

Prettyinbeadsandpaper said...

I can not believe that these two beautiful ladies will not be back next season. since when did CM become a mans club? This is so wrong and i think that CBS will live to regret this. just fix it before it is to late PLEASE!!!

Anonymous said...

"Cost cutting" measures just doesnt wash. AJ's character likely had the fewest lines and scenes of the 7, so there's no way her salary is that huge. But its understandable. No doubt the suits are barely getting by on what they currently make.

As soon as I heard the news, we discussed how they will add a different female character -- probably a minority character {neither here nor there to me, but essential in PC universe}, and you can bet she will be cast based not just on her acting ability, but also on her SQ {sizzle quotient}. the brass at cbs really dont get what makes -- made -- this show great, and how they have just turned it into another run-of-the-mill, "can miss" show.

'tis okay, now its a clean sweep. there is now absolutely nothing on the network i will be watching. sayanara, cbs.

Dear CBS,
Please do not remove JJ and Prentiss from your CM series. As much as I absolutely love the show, I will not be able to continue as a viewer if this happens. Please listen to your fans and reconsider this action.

It's official JJ got definitely fired !!!! :(( and

"Brewster just closed a deal to return to the veteran CBS crime drama, and she will be in almost every episode next season"

Wanna bet Emily' ll go on the infamous spin-off in order to make ratings a bit higher than the Withaker' s team only?

CBS: shame on you!

.PS- I should clarify. I am immensely grateful. I'm still angry about AJ. I'm sad this is my last year. But I wanted to thank the fans... "

Her last year....my God I'm soooooo sad :'(

Apparently the coming season will be Pagwet Brewster's lat one. I'm sorry, but it really sucks. CM will become like any ordinary detective show.Somewhere I read "CM: season 6 the bes ever". So what? People watch because they LIKE it as it is. Moreover Paget Brewster is an excellent actress. I sincerely hope that the spin-off will be a flop.
Please don't cut off Prentiss!!!!

Anonymous said...

I thought this show would be different. Now you cut A J & Paget. Both of them are an asset to the show. Why them? I didn't think too highly of the pilot for the spin-off & you can same money by getting rid of some of the guys. Reid isn't that interesting, Rossi has finished his business & Hotch has a son he should be spending time with. Try to justify getting rid of A J & Paget. Oh well, looks like another show will be off my list of things to watch.

Anonymous said...

You know how when many tv shows changed people and well that is the end of the show, my bet is if they let this happen the show only has one more season, which is very very sad, I love this show and think that it takes the whole cast to make it.

Anonymous said...

Well I'm sad/mad about this. I think the Prentiss character has been a bonus to the show, I love her!! She is so much better than Emily ever was. I know JJ, Prentiss and Garcia were a fabulous trio, what will Garcia do with no close friend to talk to?? She can not confide in a stranger. I miss Mandy terribly, Rossi is ok but he is no Mandy. I do not care about a spin-off, I love the original!! I USED to watch CSI and then they changed the characters and made spin offs and now I do not watch any of them. I suppose when the same is done with CM I will go and find another show to watch but why should I have to? Your crazy if you get rid of either of them. :(

I've already said it in a previous comment, I'm really sad that AJ Cook is leaving the show, and that my favorite character and actress Paget Brewster will not be in all episodes next season.

Now if I understand well what Paget wrote on twitter, this is her last year on CM ! If so, I'm really sad, and won't watch season 7 if she's not in it.

The thing I don't understand, besides CBS decision regarding AJ and Paget, is that some people are writing that a good amount of people watching CM wanted that ! How could they say that ? Where did they saw that de fans of the show wanted new characters and characters we love to go ?

I just read it here at Excessif, a french website :

This is 100% wrong. I am devastated, and am left wondering why CBS is even bothering to continue with Criminal Minds. Cancelling it would be a far less expensive, a quicker, and less painful way to murder it, as they are so obviously intent on doing.

If anything, CBS should have expanded her role with her husband and child on the show. I loved the chemistry between the two actors and his character was also in law enforcement. CBS blew this one.

I am so ANGRY! I love all of the characters on Criminal Minds. CBS is CRAZY if they think viewers are going to be "ok" with a replacement for AJ Cooks character of JJ. We DID NOT like the temporary replacment when she was on marternity leave, and we WILL NOT like a permanent one! I also love Paget Brewsters character of Emily Prentiss. I am so upset, that as much as I LOVE this show, I do not think I will be watching it after JJ's character leaves! Sorry!
