CRIMINAL MINDS: QUESTION OF THE DAY

Criminal Minds We all know that Criminal Minds uses some great quotes as tags for most of their episodes. Today's question: What is your favorite quotation, either from an episode of Criminal Minds or a personal favorite, and why?

53 comments:

  1. This one was never used in an episode, but I feel that it really sums up the show.
"There's no such thing as a faceless stranger. All Strangers have a face." Margaret Atwood

The writers do a great job at telling the story of the unsub. They put a face (or story) onto the unsub. And while the crimes are terrible, we can never label the unsub as simply evil. The unsub is a terribly flawed or disturbed/mentally ill human being that has to be stopped.

A friend of mine, recently converted to the show remarked: "You kind of feel a little sorry for the unsub." And I said, "then the writers have done their job."

  2. from Angel Maker

“We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.” - Chuck Palahnuik

So true but such a tall order and so few of us can achieve that.

  3. " To thine own self be true... "
    William Shakespeare

because so often we forget that!

  4. From Penelope:

Garcia quoted: William Shakespeare wrote, love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.

I think that are wise words to live by. I remember watching the episode and thinking it was a powerful quote.

  5. When Paul Newman died last week I thought about the quote that was used in "Riding the Lightning" which follows.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe it was spoken by Jason Gideon and went like this-

"What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal." I looked it up and it is attributed to Albert Pine

  6. From the end of "Seven Seconds":

"Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist.
Children know dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed."

    -G.K. Chesterton

  7. I posted the quote from Ashes & Dust on my dorm room wall over my computer. It is a powerful message and one I really like!

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever." -Gandhi

I think it is important to make every single day count and not just gloss through them. I liked the quote enough to print it out and post it and it is still on my wall. I take it down during summer break and then repost it when the new term starts.

  8. From Lucky!!!!

Emily: When a woman tells a man about her feelings, she doesn't want him to fix her, she wants him to shutup and listen.

I THINK EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE THAT TATTOOED ON HIS ARM AT BIRTH!!!

  10. I dare Reid to say this to JJ when her baby is born! JJ would drop kick Reid and she would not be using Physics Magic. LOL

    From the Fox:

JJ: (looking at Hotch's newborn baby) He's so gorgeous.
    Haley: Thank you.
Reid: If you find baldness and wrinkles attractive.

Abraham Lincoln once said "In the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

  12. This one appears as my signature. It's from the CM Episode The Crossing

"A woman must not depend on the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself." - Susan B. Anthony

A lesson every woman should learn.

  13. From The Perfect Storm:
"Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls the most massive characters are seared with scars."-Kahlil Gibran
This one reminds me of my aunt who's been through alot yet she remains strong...

  14. Yeah! An easy question of the day! Definately for me it is from "The Tribe" because I loved the episode and sooooo wish we could have Blackwolf on another episode! He was sooooo great.

Blackwolf: There are many paths to the same place. Trust me.
Hotchner: Just so you know, you sound like a fortune cookie.

  15. Charm and Harm must be Sarah Palin's favorite episode because this was written for her:

Voltaire wrote, "There are some that only employ words for the purpose of disguising their thoughts."

    Totally fits Palin!

  16. FK2:

Hotchner: What the hell was that?
    Reid: He had a bomb.
Morgan: You didn't think we needed to know that?
Reid: I told you to go downstairs.
    Morgan: You didn't say "bomb!"

    best line ever on CM!

  17. I'm a teacher at an inner city school that can't afford pencils. I liked the quote from P911 that goes, "The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children." It was written by Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  18. I have 2 favorite quotes, not used on CM (yet), and 2 used in the show.

"The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears, or the sea." Isak Dinesen

"Be the change you want to see in the world.
    Mohandas Gandhi

Used in "Sex, Birth, Death" as spoken by Reid:

"Between the desire and the spasm, between the potency and the existence, between the essence and the descent, falls the shadow. This is the way the world ends."
    T. S. Eliot

and from "A Higher Power" spoken by Prentiss:

""The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering."
    Ben Okri

  19. Morgan: Garcia, baby girl, please tell me something I want to hear.
Garcia: You are a statuesque god of sculpted chocolate thunder.

Morgan: How about something I don't already know?

Garcia: (after a pause) I have a sweet tooth.

    From "In Birth & Death"

  20. My faorite quote that I have recently come across is: "Curiosity killed the cat but for a while, I was a suspect." -Steven Wright. I think this quoye basically sums me up!

  21. From Profiler, Profiled they used the Cory Doctorow quote, ""All secrets are deep. All secrets become dark. That's in the nature of secrets." For some reason that quote has always stayed with me.

  22. I adore Elephant's Memory's end quote by Tom Stoppard. Especially because MGG's got such a pretty voice. And also the George Orwell one at the end of Secrets & Lies.

  23. This one from Compulsion actually got me addicted to CM:
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world." Einstein
But I really like the one from Ashes&Dust
"Live as if you were going to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were going to live forever.” Gandhi
(I also like similar Latin quote: "Carpe Diem")
And the last, but not least, because so many people, even not geniuses, sometimes feel like that:
“A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?” Albert Einstein

    ReplyDelete
  24. My favorite quote is also the quote from the second season episode 'The Perfect Storm'.

“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” Khalil Gibran

The quote got cited by Hotch at the end of the episode and to me it signifies a hint to his past, his reason to join the BAU and the person he has become.

And it simply is a great quote and so true...

  25. 2.17 Distress
"If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace" Thomas Paine
    Quoted by Aaron Hotchner

and why? Who wouldn't want that for his/her kids, grandkids etc...?

  26. The CM quote that impressed me most and really stuck with me is from Nietzsche:

“When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you.”

I had to look up which episode it was in and I was extremely surprised that it was in the very first episode that aired, “Extreme Aggressor”. Seems like CM got under my skin much earlier than I had realized before...

  27. It's very hard to decide which of the CM's quotes is my favourite... In the end, I've chosen that, quoted by Hotch in 'Ashes&Dust':

"Nothing is permanent in this wicked world. Not even our troubles." Charles Chaplin

    ReplyDelete
  28. "Men plan. Fate Laughs."
I got this from Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher. I just really love how simple and true it is...no matter what we plan for, reality will crash the party.

    also

"Damn The Man, Save the Empire!" from Empire Records (1995).
I am all for doing what needs to be done, not just blindly following orders.

  29. "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." Oscar Wilde

I think it was quoted by Hotchner, but I'm not sure

  30. "A sad soul can kill you quicker, far quicker, than a germ." John Steinbeck from Elephant's Memory

  31. The quote from 'Angel Maker' has a special meaning to me.

Wendell Berry said, "The past is our definition. We may strive with good reason to escape it, or to escape what is bad in it. But we will escape it only by adding something better to it."

    It's a really true quote.

  32. "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." Einstein

Can't remember which epi it is from.

  33. A Real Rain:

Gandhi- "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary. The evil it does is permanent."

  34. "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal." -Albert Pine (Riding the Lightning)

    Good words to live by.

  35. A man feared that he might find an assassin;
Another that he might find a victim.
One was more wise than the other.

    Stephen Crane

Actually I think many of Crane's short poems would work well for CM; they are short, mostly bitter and always truisms.

I use them a great deal when I write
    Lociloco

  36. Garcia in Penelope
"Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none". William Shakespeare

    Reid in Profiler Profiled
"One begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." Sherlock Holmes

    Both are very wise

  37. "Don't take life too seriously...no one gets out alive."

To me this is just a more graphic way of saying don't sweat the small stuff in life. If we worry about everything then we don't have time to enjoy the important things. I have learned this from working in a nursing home, a lesson told to me by numerous patients.

    ReplyDelete
  38. "The question that sometimes drives me hazy: Am I, or the others crazy?" -Albert Einstein
This quote just seams to sum up my life. I know that's sad but it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "A sad soul can kill you quicker - far quicker - than a germ." John Steinbeck
I have seen so many people destroyed by the anger and bitterness in their hearts. It doesn't just effect them either, it effects everyone around them family, friends, etc. Forgiveness is freeing. Doesn't necessarily free the person your angry at but it frees you.

  40. "Nothing is permanent in this wicked world. Not even our troubles." Charles Chaplin

  41. A personal favorite:

"You see things; and you say 'Why?'; But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'" - George Bernard Shaw

I guess because there's a lot more hope in what could be and what we can dream up than in reality.

    Wise words for every woman!

  45. "It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone." -Rose Kennedy (I think)
from The Fisher King part 2; great episode, great quote. :]

  46. I have two that i like, which
    were both said by Hotch:
1st: "It doesn't matter who my
father was, it matters who i
    remember he was."
    from season 3; episode 11
    "Birthright"
    author: Anne Sexton

2nd: "It is a wise father that
    knows his own child."
    from season 3; episode 12
    "3rd Life"
    author: William Shakespeare

i like these, because the first
    one deals with Hotch accepting
his father for who he was, and
the second one, because he plans
on knowing his son, no matter
where he may be at the moment.

  47. Not used in any epi, but I think it could be...though not without controversy!

"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become." Carl Jung

  48. Favourite Quote used on the show:
"Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn't people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them? "
    Rose Kennedy

Quote they should use on the show:
"It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness"
    Chinese Proverb

Quote I know they won't use:
"You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely."
    Ogden Nash

One of my Favourite Quotes of all time:
“The next best thing to being clever is being able to quote someone who is.”

  50. Oooh good question!!!

My husband and I picked our latest tattoos from quotes we found on Criminal Minds. His is the quote from The Perfect Storm "Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls. The most massive characters are seared with scars."
    His is done.
.. and mine, which I just started but only have the outline so far, and the lettering from True Night "The noir hero is a knight in blood caked armor. He's dirty and he does his best to deny the fact that he's a hero the whole time.” Because with everything we go through, he is my utmost hero, but would never admit it :) Does anyone else have a criminal Minds tattoo?

  51. "Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed." in Seven Seconds

I thought that was great for the ep!

    and

"The question that sometimes drives me hazy: Am I, or the others crazy?" in Derailed

First quote by Reid! one of the best at that!!

    and

"Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it." in Minimal Loss

great ep and that was so good for the ep!

    those are the best!

  52. My favorite "Criminal Minds" quote of all time is a Morgan and Garcia exchange from the season 2 episode "The Aftermath"
Garcia: "Dayton, Ohio, you're on the air."
Morgan: "I'd like to make a request."
Garcia: "With that sultry voice? You name it."
Morgan: "Look up sexy and brilliant in that computer of yours and see what you come up with."
Garcia: "Well look at that, it's me!"
Morgan: "You're a goddess, woman! Ciao!"
I also love the one used "The Perfect Storm" that's already been cited. The one about the massive characters being seared with scars seems to be hinting about Hotch personally, and I hope we'll eventually know how.
I also thought we were being told something by Hotch's conversation with the killer in "Natural Born Killer" season 1
Hotch tells the unsub that most people who grow up with such abuse do become torturers. The killers responds, "What about the rest of them. You said most."
And Hotch responds, "The rest grow up to catch them."
I thought that was telling us something about Hotch too, but they've not gone back to it yet.
