I loved the episode. It was really well filmed. Kudos to the writers and director. There was a creepy atmosphere throughout the whole ep. Even though the victim/unsub parts on the mostly dark boat and our team on the sunny beach were visually the exact opposite, there was still an atmosphere of gloom on the team. It was almost like in "To Hell...and Back". They were somehow overwhelmed by the number of victims, although the numbers were nowhere near as high as in "To Hell...". Hotch seemed very affected by the case every time they found new bones.

The whole team was great in the episode. Terrific acting by everyone. Reid was in his element working on the remains. There were some great profiling scenes by all the team members, specially by Morgan and Reid. I loved every Morgan/Rossi scene (like always). Rossi is such a great guy. He was there for Morgan throughout he case.

Morgan was awesome. Great profiling, he saved the hostage and handled the interogation really well and very calm even though he was personally affected by the case. The actress who played Morgan`s aunt was great and Morgan`s scenes with her were powerful and heartbreaking. When he lied to her about her daughter he gave her some closure. Morgan with teary eyes looking at Rossi for approval and Rossi giving the approval by smiling and nodding was an intense moment between the two men. Morgan`s aunt finally would be able to mourn Cindy and to move on with her life. The scene also reminded me of "To Hell...". Hope paralyzes. Overall a great episode.

Yeah, another great episode; Shemar did a fantastic job and Jim and Breen are great story tellers. Gotta say I really loved seeing Hotch without a tie, providing press conference in his sunglasses and running the docks in his Khakis. Morgan and Rossi moments were very good too; love having Rossi more in the forefront these past couple of episodes. Reid and Hotch moments were fantastic, loved seeing Reid do his thing. Great job everyone, thanks CM cast and crew for another entertaining hour.
Congratulations Shemar on a new contract! I’m ANXIOUSLY awaiting good news for Thomas.

Sorry gubegirl! Sometimes I type too fast and forget words and key hyphens! I did mean re-sign!

I though the announcement on Paget's series wasn't until Monday. Where did they announce it already?

coadygirl: I think MGG wears his watch like that purposefully and sometimes outside his sleeve(s) which may include a sweater so it needs to be larger. Just what I have surmised. Seen that many times.

But it reminds you of how thin he truly is. A couple pieces of my earthquake cake, maybe topped with whipping cream, would do him just fine. It was to die for and happily, my friends took much of it home for their spouses better than me needing to be dancing my tush off trying to work it off me:) I could totally see it baked in separate custard dishes or ramekins.

I don't know where the PB info was found, Karen, have been tied up all day, but I just hope she decides quickly: that she plans to return and that we receive that news. That and TG re-SIGNING and we will be all set. Everything else will fall into place. I'm sure of it.

Have a good nite, all.

To Karen (and anyone else wondering): I've found articles about NBC on TV Guide and Deadline Hollywood websites that list Paget's pilot as one that has been passed over. But you are right that the NBC up fronts are Monday, I was just so excited that I thought I'd share right away. btw this is just another fan writing, not the well-connected Jill in charge of chats and the like.

I really liked this episode - thought it was disturbing, well shot, beautiful and none-too-little sad. Think i felt quite a few tugs in the chest area during the Morgan/Aunt scenes. All the character interactions were nicely done. CM does it so well, isn't it, with just short exchanges revealing how much they actually know each other. Rossi/Morgan, Reid/Hotch, but Seaver still jars - a little too assured, imo. The unsub was great in a very bad way and his scene with Morgan was awesome, also in a twisted way. Morgan didn't flinch. Ohhhh our guys are GOOD.
SDwally, i had to watch it the second time precisely for the resons you listed. My friend and i have now included navy blue button-down shirt to the WMD category. and dehydrated me now has a house that looks a lot like JJ's office - disaster. Gotta do the laundry. heh.

Thank you Jill. I was just trying to look it up and didn't find anything. I do hope that Paget decides to come back to CM! I miss Prentiss terribly!

Gubegirl, you are so right about MGG eating some earthquake cake. I would actually like some too! haha.

I am not convinced that Tom Selleck is the highest paid on Blue Bloods, but he is certainly at least the second highest or tied with the highest paid. Tom is an excellent television actor but could not ask for a large movie salary unlike Mark who has movie excellence behind him and is able to command a high wage for that. For him to take a television job he would do so only if he knows that he could receive at least as much as he would get on a movie gig. These two men are both highly paid on that show.

@ Niteanjl:
I'm also wondering if Thomas is holding out for shorter hours rather than purely for more $$$. All that commuting must really get to him (about ten years ago I did nine months of driving 95 miles a day for work - mostly on the motorway - and it was soul destroying, so I can't imagine what years of plane commutes must be like). Perhaps he wants his filming hours condensed into fewer days so he has more time at home with his family but we still see the same amount of Hotch? Not sure I'm phrasing it too well, but I know what I want to say!

Great news about Shemar's new contract - now all we need is Thomas and Paget back and that would be the icing on the cake. Or should that be frosting?! ;-))

@ Gubegirl:
On the subject of cake (drool...) I've found a recipe for earthquake cake which incorporates all the ingredients you mentioned. I had to google a couple of terms** to translate them into Limey-Lingo but it's all good now.

**Stick of butter/confectioners' sugar.

It's my little project for next Sunday - I'll take it into work on Monday and test it out on the gannets in my department!

Although MGG still needs fattening up (good God - what are us ladies like?) I actually reckon he's not as skinny as he used to be. Perhaps he learnt how to make earthquake cake?!

Tom Selleck makes $125K an episode according to TV Guide. Mark is not listed in the top tier on either of the 2 two resources I have on this: (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Top-TV-Earners-1021717.aspx)

Yet Selleck's positioning in the credits is the same as Thomas Gibson's. I'm just pointing out that either position, the lead in the credits, or the name that follows the "and", can denote the star or lead of the show.

Sorry if I'm not supposed to post the link.

Icing, powdered, confectioner's: all the same but I deliverately referred to it as icing as that is what my Canadian cookbooks call it. We know it as powdered generally. What do you call your cream cheese? Forgot about it but I think something different than us.

Doubt MGG would be baking any cakes but I'll bet if I furnished him some Canadian "Kick-A--" coffee, I could choke a couple pieces down him ...maybe if I did that for several weeks with a few other homemade dishes whilst he read his techie books and watched his sci-fi, I could manage to get a few pounds on him. Still trying to get that barechested image out of my mind from last week's news link - the one next to SM-oh, my we do need to work on our boy. It wouldn't work to take him to jazzercise with me but def he can go to yoga and I will send him to the gym with my scrawny 19 y.o. to bulk up with the weights he uses to get "buff" for hockey.

Can you get that picture in your mind's eye: Our Gube lifting weights? Naw, I'll just keep him in the kitchen with me near the coffee pot, and let him practice a few practice magic tricks on me...

Rec'd an e-mail from one of yesterday's lunchers: her hubbie LOVED the cake. Need to deliver a couple more pieces around the neighborhood this AM to make sure my hubbie doesn't decide to sneak a second or me a third-LOL!

Can hardly wait til Wed. nite. Everyone laying in the Patrone???

I wanted to state how to determine who gets paid more on a show. The star is shown first and is paid the most, in Criminal Minds that was Mandy and is now Joe. The second highest paid is usually the second person shown or the last person if their is a and or with in front of the name, in CM it is Tom.

The LOST cast was always listed alphabetically in the opening credits. Matthew Fox was the highest paid actor and his name just fell in the middle some place. I don't think there's a set rule for this, but your explanation is probably true sometimes.

sf81387 said...

Also, being shown at the end with the word "and" in front of your name is a sign of prestige and not normally an indication of an actor's salary.

Hoping TG puts pen to paper this week - CBS still need to extract that metaphorical finger from their @r$e. I was chatting to a friend a couple of days ago who's become obsessed with CM over the past year (better late than never, dearie) and she was ranting on about the possibility of no Hotch next season. It just wouldn't be right!

As well as TG being a superb actor there's so much more to explore with both Hotch's background and how he's really coped (or not) after Haley's death, knowing Prentiss is still alive, etc.

Another moment from the episode I liked - my latent teenage fangirl persona squealed - was when Morgan was chasing after the unsub. Tight black T-shirt, FBI vest, sunglasses... I do actually watch CM for the storylines - but an eye candy moment such as that was a distinct bonus.

@ Gubegirl:
It's generally known as cream/soft cheese over here, although we often call it "Philly" - even if it's cheapo version supermarket own brand! Which I actually prefer.

A couple of years ago I bought a book on the differences between American English and British English; quite amusing in places - ;-)) - and fascinating to see how the same language can actually be so different. If I ever come out with something too random (I try not to) just "yell".

Now I have all the ingredients added to my shopping list, this time next week I'll be able to officially say I make the best earthquake cake this side of the San Andreas...

Unknown said...

Blimey: I must go back and drool ... I mean see that scene with Morgan again...a-a-h-h-hit doesn't get much better than him running in one of his snug T's that's for sure. Need a second viewing also to refresh my appreciation of Hotch!

Served the leftover earthq-cake with vanilla ice cream - to my husb. who true Canadian he is, cannot get enuf desserts. Tasted good also, but the so-called frosting ingredients that get dolloped (not spread) on top and THEN baked (causes the earthquake effect on top)make it quite most. I had only powdered it with confectioner's sugar which makes it look very pretty - like right out of the bakery. This was acc to the recipe.

Since I had baked it the nite before, I re-heated it at 300 X 10 mins before serving to the lunching ladies, and the soft buttery/cream-cheesy pecan-cocoanut topping that was now on the bottom(!) tasted just right and got rave reviews.

I'm sure it will be a hit and you can say you're getting ready for your upcoming trip to EarthquakeCountry" -Cali- to your "gannets." What is a gannet BTW? your worker bees?

@ Gubegirl - gannets are seabirds which are known for eating loads of fish. To call someone a gannet means they eat loads in one go - much like everyone in my department (yes, this includes yours truly) when cake is brought in. Btw, I must have been Canadian in a past life as dessert ("pudding" in northern England) is the best part of a meal for me! Haha.

"First coffee" - I forgot it's before midday on the West Coast for a few seconds. Nearly 8pm here - urgh.

The DVD my Source provided was posted to my Mum on Friday so I'll have to wait to oggle the T-shirt scene again, unless I can find it on youtube! ;-)

I'll be driving down and occasionally detouring from the Pacific coast road from San Francisco to Los Angeles on the penultimate leg of my road trip (in exactly ten weeks almost to this minute I'll be somewhere over Manitoba according to the flight tracking website). Simplified, my route [ that's pronounced root - ;-))) ] is NV-AZ-NM-CO-UT-NV-CA-NV. Can't wait!!!

NBC just released their 2011-2012 season schedule and My Life as an Experiment is nowhere to be found--does it mean Paget can return? I hope so, now that AJ Cook has returned.

So if MLAAE hasn't been picked up does it mean Paget *has* to return to CM (i.e. under the terms of her contract - if she still has one) or can she refuse to come back?

Sorry, not sure how these things work!

Blimey: I'll be "rooting" for you girl, to have a safe trip. The coast highway trip is a beauty and one we took the year before we got married, going to SFO and Heasrt Castle and then south, seeing Monterey, the Redwoods, etc and lots of great photo-ops on the way home. Some cool -looking sea birds (don't know that they are "gannets" and the huge seals on the rocks and the "Lone Cyprsss" at Pebble Beach are awesome. 17 mile Drive and Carmel are must-sees as well. Many "Kodak moments" and bring an extra battery & mem card for your digital. Compact Bushnells binocs that are compact and only $39.95 here - on-line-would be great. I will be using my belated Mo. Day gift of those to get a closer look a Train and Maroon 5 (Adam Levine-whoo-hoo!) when they hit the Amphitheatre here 7/22.

Wish the CM Convention that the mods were trying so hard to arrange a couple years ago was happening: wouldn't that be great - we could all meet up and have a CM fest/orgy?! OMG, I get goose bumps just thinking about it. We could have all the cool and memorable music from our fave epi's/scenes and re-live &re-hash and have a margarita or two as well! Think of what a great time all us CM-freaks-but-ladies would have. A lovely thought, huh...

Must go and get some work done - you think this is my day off or something?!LOL.
Excuse any typos - no time to proof!

Amazing episode. I loved everything about it.

The Reid scenes were pure gold and he was perfectly at ease working with the sedimentary deposits and the bones.
As a big Reid fan I really hope his genius will be displayed more next season. I hate seeing his huge potential being wasted.

The Morgan scenes were really interesting to watch. I liked the conflicted emotions he displayed, how he started to doubt about his cousin’s fate, his interactions with Rossi and his decision to not share the true with his aunt.

I liked how he tricked the Unsub. The Unsub was so sure he was getting under Morgan’s skin when he understood that Cindi was someone important for Morgan. But in the end Morgan got exactly what he wanted from him : the confirmation that Cindi was not one of his victims.

I’m sure Morgan felt conflicted about his choice at the end. He let his aunt believe that Cindi was one of the Unsub’s victims, and it probably wasn’t an easy decision. It must have weighed heavily on his conscience.

I’m looking forward to the finale, it looks promising. And I’m excited about season seven (with Reid displaying more his genius abilities, pretty please ?).

According to Deadline.com, CBS holds the option on Paget should her pilot fail, so it's CBS's decision. If they pick her option up (Deadline expects they will), then yes, she'll have to come back.

Trying to do this is so frustrating this for this thread. I managed to get the trial run right and then when I tried to comment I lost it. Is it me, doing something wrong? Not just jumping through all the hoops? Let's see how this goes. It's like watching the show: waiting for the next good episode so I can continue to watch.

teresah said...

OK. It seems I got it right. I had mixed feelings about this show. I liked the opening. Bodies spewing out of pipes got my attention. Although it did have shades of the original Law and Order where an innocent would come upon the crime scene.
Always good to see Hotch out of that suit, but not too often, the contrast is more drool inducing. I also found a return to shades of the diminished Hotch here, he was in charge but his only interaction with the team was giving orders. It's in the interactions with his team that I like to see Hotch's humanity. And I like his profiling abilities to get an airing, I know this was a Morgan centric episode and each show can't be all things to all people.
As the ep. continued I began to lose interest. All those bleached bones were getting boring and I just did not buy, no matter how much of a genius our adorable Reid may be, that he got so much info. from those bones so fast.
I did not find the storyline about Morgan and his aunt/missing cousin all that believable. Just a little too much overacting on his part in those scenes with his aunt that we're suddenly being introduced to after all those years. I remember from the ep. Profiler Profiled, which I liked a lot that the least compelling element was the interaction with his family. I don't know if it's too much of a shift to suddenly see a character having to behave so differently or if it is just not done so well. So I assume this was his secret. And did he tell his aunt a lie about the unsub and her daughter's photo?
Might this be another loose end, a storyline to pick up in the future?
When she shows up either dead or alive? And if his cousin was a potential victim would he have been profiling? I know that's one of those inconsistencies that could just drive you mad if you're not willing to suspend your disbelief and realize that this is a TV show. Glad to see however that Shemar has a contract for next year.
I liked how they found the victims through those postcards. That was poignant.
No gag inducing/manipulative scenes between Seaver and Rossi. That's always good.

Teresah, agree with you re Hotch - works best in small doses, both tielessness and smileyness. And hotchalanches (when was the last time we really had a good one, though, hmm?).
I want S7 to start with a relatively clean slate when TG and PB's situation has more clarity one way or another. I think it's a case of Shrodinger's cat - the important people obviously know already what's happening/happened with that. But I'm really close to the end of my tether waiting to find out about the status of the cat. hmmmm

Thank you Jim Clemente and John Douglas for the chat, it was very informative and I think everyone appreciate the time you took to chat with the fans (and a big thank you to the blog owner for the transcript).

The episode :
Reid rarely gets the opportunity to distinguish himself with his brain lately, so I loved all his scenes. I wanted for a long time to see his scientific background acknowledged and playing a role in an episode (even if I was thinking more along the lines of Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering since he has PhDs in these disciplines). I want to see more of scientific Reid or simply genius Reid.
I just wish there had been more to the linguistic profile, but maybe another time ?
I loved the actress playing Morgan’s aunt. She was perfect and I felt so sorry for Yvonne. It must have been devastating for her to lose her daughter and being unable to move on.
A part of me felt sorry for the unsub, but I was mostly appalled by his actions. I Loved the interrogation scene with Morgan.
A very good episode !

Just saw news on my homepage from "TV Squad" the names of all the shows that were cancelled. Non-issue for our CM.

But, "on the bubble" as they say, remains CM:SB. No surprise from what we have been hearing, dare I say kudos to our faithful: most serious CM fans here were avoiding
watching, for solidarity or whatever. Hope it will serve to be meaningful in a positive way for our beloved CM and cast.

Now, we must wait how much longer re: news about TG's contract and PB's return? Wouldn't it be great to be raising our glasses Wed. nite to those two HUGE bits of good news while watching the finale? We could blog and dance, drink and drool together!

Heck, I'll make another earthquake cake to eat with the margaritas! (My taco salad might be a tad better choice...)

Teresah, sorry, we're prolly in sparring time zones. Urban Dictionary defines a Hotchalanche as "A term used to describe the wrath of Behavioral Analysis Unit Chief Aaron Hotchner (known as 'Hotch'), of Criminal Minds fame. Usually cool, calm, and collected, Hotchner has, on occasion, lost the plot with an unsub during a case. The result is terrifying." Eg (though these are not against unsubs), Minimal Loss - Hotch vs the attorney general, Tabula Rasa - Hotch vs the Defence Attorney, 52 Pick-up - Hotch vs Jordan Todd. There are a few others, but i don't think we've seen a really good one in a long time. And I'm not counting the watered-down version that was poured (scratch that - trickled) over Seaver. That was a tired, half-hearted Hotchalanche and i cannot associate the Hotch character with anything half-hearted. Nuh-uh.

Gubegirl/Vicki - my friends and hubs know my blogavatar and this obsession is hardly a secret; so it doesn't bother me that i have to use my name. Eh, it wasn't a great disguise anyway - more like an elephant wearing a pair of Persols and trying to blend in. Although, come to think of it, my employers better not be making the association - they could think that this creauture of unsound mind might not be best prepped to handle the work she's paid to do. Hmmmmm....

When, pray tell, will the (dead/alive) cat be out of the bag? Seriously, it's just too much unnecessary frazzling. No fair. And perish those dimples, Gibson, because if you don't re-sign, hell would have no fury like a fandom scorned.

Going back to "Moab is my Washpot" - terrific book, oh yeth :-)

Now that names are now allowed again on this blog, here is my review from the episode.

I’m not sure what I feel about this episode. There were a lot of good points to this story, but it certainly wasn’t my favorite episode this year. I think what threw the rhythm off for me was the excessive dwelling on the unsub and his actions. I agree that there were some strange leaps of logic in the profiling (the incapacitating drug for instance), and that aspect of the story might have been better fleshed out with less unsub and more psychology. I was unsatisfied with how the unsub truly targeted the victims. Sure they were all “abandoning” their responsibilities, but how did he engage them to figure that out? There were a lot of interesting theories how he targeted them, but I don’t feel the show gave us a good closure on how he truly did it.

I thought Morgan was well-written and acted this episode. There have been way too many episodes where Morgan is the angry, impetuous hothead. But this was a return to earlier seasons Morgan, one who was calm, controlled, kind, sensitive and protective. It was nice to see him talk down the unsub this time rather than unloading a magazine into him. I really liked Morgan and Rossi’s interaction this episode. It is sometimes striking to think back to Rossi’s earliest episodes where those two frequently clashed, and now they have a tight, respectful professional relationship. I have mixed feelings about Morgan lying to his aunt at the end. Sure it gave her “closure”, but what if one day, the truth is finally revealed? Would she be grateful that Morgan lied to her? Kind of the same will Morgan understand why Hotch lied to him about Emily’s “death”?

I wonder if Reid got a fourth PhD in forensic anthropology in his spare time, because this is certainly not a topic he’s ever talked about before, and it’s not exactly a skill you can pick up as a hobby. I gave that part of the story a pass, because I always delight in seeing Reid’s genius highlighted that shows he’s an essential member of the team. I liked seeing Reid and Hotch’s interactions in the beginning, because they are not as frequent as I would like.

I’m not an Ashley fan, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. I personally feel the character delivery is wooden, and she just doesn’t do it for me. I wasn’t too thrilled that Rossi would go and reveal something as deeply personal as Morgan’s missing cousin to Ashley when she doesn’t know him as well. It’s not really Rossi’s place to tell her something like that.

This is not in my top ten of favorite episodes this year, but there was still some good character interaction that explored them deeper.

Anonymous said...

@LaShawna
I could totally see Reid studying forensic anthropology :)
We know he was completing a BA in philosophy in the beginning of the fourth season ('Masterpiece'), so it means he never stopped studying.
Reid is the only scientist of the group with already 3PhDs in math, chemistry and engineering. I always thought there was a lot of potential here and I hope it'll be explored.
I too delight in seeing his genius highlighted, showing us he's an essential member of the team (and the Hotch/Reid scenes).
