Had listed songs already used in prev epi's the other day only to hae an anonymous state unequivically that Cm would never publish a soundtrack partly because they don't sell. They also indicated that from epi 6 this season there was very little music used that was not originala to CM except for the shoot-em-up one, 13 Steps.
I asked them for further clarification and have also asked if Jill or anyone knew who we could/should be talking to about the prospects. Heard nothing back.
Have no answers but have not put anymore time into it, much as several people seemed to like the idea as it could be a lost cause.
If anyone has any ideas or info, pls post it here and I am happy to re-start working on it again.
I had also started a list of favorite songs people felt fit their fave character but that a secondary project.
I'm bummed but don't know what else to do at this point. I do not care to get on here to only rant about Seaver and now even the shortage of Hotch this season is starting to get some argument that doesn't sound like discussion. (This lack of Hotch could have included the storyline about his natural grief, fewer duties while he re-grouped, etc. but has been very obvious to most everyone.) I like this to be fun and don't care to fight about a TV show, regardless of the fact that I am a total CM addict.
gubegirl - a little confused. I haven't participated in any discussion on the music for the show...? Are you asking me something about that...sorry, I'm just a little confused by your past.
There's plenty to discuss about Criminal Minds without delving back into the Seaver debate. I don't think anyone is arguing about Hotch either. It's just differences of opinion. I don't think you're going to get any discussion going that isn't going to result in differences of opinion, not even a discussion about music.
Personally, I'm not interested in listing songs for a soundtrack, but I'm not bothered by it either. If you want to do it, do it. Who cares whether the producers are interested. Make your own CD from the list you compile and enjoy it. The only song I can think of that I really liked that played during an episode was that song they played at the end of "7 Seconds" when they were arresting the parents and trying to get the little girl to breathe. It was a good choice.
I don't really understand why people are saying Hotch has had less screen time this season.
He was not in one episode and my guess is that had more to do with TG taking a week off rather than the network forcing it on him.
I think you all were spoiled by his major character-centric episodes last season, so this season now that he's back to a normal amount of screentime it seems like a lot less.
There are quite a few things I like about having this Blog. First it's great that I can post comments here instead of just yelling at the TV or boring my friends who are more casual viewers of the show. Frankly they find my interest a little hard to understand. It's fun to read the comments of others and see the different aspects of the show that interest them. For instance I enjoy that some people are focusing on the music, not my thing, but glad others want to do it and have a forum for it. Sometimes the back and forth about Seaver gets less than enjoyable but I try to skip over it. I don't like the character but refuse to berate those that do. The show is something that has given me many hours of pleasure; how could watching Thomas Gibson not? But ultimately it is a TV show and perhaps I will have to move on if the next season is as bad or worse that this one. I will be sad but there's always reruns. I assume that CBS will show reruns of S6 during the Summer, will not be watching those. Watched two episodes from S1 on ION last night and they were able to combine compelling unsubs, team interaction, and good profiling. There were a couple of inconsistencies but the shows were on the whole so well written that these did not distract from my enjoyment of them, unlike this season.
Yeah, I watched "Blood Hungry" on ION last night and I had to chuckle over Hotch's statement that an agent could not be in the field on crutches and how nobody came unglued and cried foul because Reid spent most of Season 5 in the field on crutches. I guess it was okay for Hotch to change his mind on that one. ; )
I wonder what was in that folder that Hotch tossed at Reid and told him he lied to him. What was in there that made him pull Reid out of the field for that case? I guess maybe the doctor just really hadn't cleared him for field work yet.
Well in defense, I think Mandy was just on crutches for the time of that episode. Matthew was on crutches for months, so unless the writers and producers were willing to leave him at the BAU hanging out with Penelope the entire time (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, since their interaction was the only thing I liked about "The Reckoner"), they had to make an adjustment to the show based on the personal reality of one of their actors.
Yeah, a medical doctor didn't clear Reid for field duty. Reid signed off on his field clearance with the justification that he was a doctor. :)
I don't really understand why people are saying Hotch has had less screen time this season
I'm trying to do what I see others doing, but not sure if this is right. Want to respond to a particular sentence in Anonymous's post. Feel free to give me pointers For me it's not so much about the actual length of time on the screen although he may have less time. It's more about the fact that he's almost a cariacture of the original. He used to be a strong leader but no more, sterness and total lack of emotion do not a strong leader make. I thought by now we would have some insight into what's going on in his head. They have diminished his presence. In that awful natural born killers-like episode quite often he just stood around doing nothing.
I wasn't trying to crush your dreams about the soundtrack, just mitigate your hopes a little bit with the reality of the situation. If you and others find it to be a fun distraction, by all means pursue it.
And I don't really have any other information for you, other than my observations about the current state of CM music and the total lack of soundtracks for police procedurals.
But hey if TG feels as though he's been short-changed perhaps he should consider opening his mouth because realistically, he's the only one who can make a difference as far as his character's screen time and behavior goes.
Yeah, 'cuz that really helped Dominic Monaghan on Lost. Oh no wait...he got fired for it!
Anyhoo - if TG is addressing it (which he probably is), then he's addressing it behind the scenes, and most likely in contract negotiations.
they had to make an adjustment to the show based on the personal reality of one of their actors.
So it's okay because it was the beloved Reid, but making an adjustment to the show for someone who is not beloved is unacceptable?
I wonder if an agent really can't be in the field if he/she is gimpy or if they just made that up so Gideon could pester Garcia for an episode. That's one of my favorite episodes. : )
Yeah, 'cuz that really helped Dominic Monaghan on Lost. Oh no wait...he got fired for it!
If that were true Naveen Andrews would've been gone after Season 1. He was the worst about complaining about screen time, but they showed him huh? They kept him around for six seasons, turned him into a zombie, blew him up and made him spend eternity with Shannon. ; )

Actually, it *is* true, and reported in the papers at the time. Dominic went to the producers (and rumored Naveen went with him, but that was never confirmed) and asked for more airtime or to be let out of his contract. The decision was made to get rid of Dominic.
So it's okay because it was the beloved Reid, but making an adjustment to the show for someone who is not beloved is unacceptable?
What the heck? They specifically wouldn't let Reid go on the cases at the beginning. Exactly like Gideon - who was only out of commission for *one* episode.
And I'm sorry, but once it became clear Reid's injury would last longer than expected, the law would have covered him. For one, he was injured on the job. The law demands you make adjustments for injured workers if you want to keep them on the job instead of out on medical leave - which they did. They brought him along, but kept him at the precincts. *If* he went out into the field, it was to a cleared crime scene.
When I fell off a ladder, they made me sit on a stool and work the register. If there was a way to adapt Reid's duties so that he could still accompany them on their cases, that's perfectly acceptable.
I'm not going to argue with you about Dom. These CM fans don't want to hear it.
Coming up with excuses for why Reid was allowed to go into the field is just that, excuses. You know I don't care about any of this. I'm just making a point, the point being that the arguments some make are hollow if its okay to change previously established procedures for one character, but it's not okay for another. No exceptions had to made by the FBI to accomodate their gimpy employee because he could've done his job from the office in Quantico just as effectively.
The arguement that certain things have gone against canon a.k.a. what's been previously established is weak because there is no such thing as canon with this particular show and there is certainly no such thing as continuity. The writers just change whatever they need to fit whatever episode they are writing and if it's okay for one character then it should be okay for another.
I think it's okay to just not like a character. I don't think you need to make up reasons for it. If you don't like them, you don't. To each his own.
Blue: are you saying Reid's REAL injury was OTJ? Because he "blew out" his knee for real while dancing and CM had him get shot in the scene trying to protect the ER Doc to incorporate his "real" injury into the storyline and explain it.
Anon: TY for your info re: the soundtrack. Guys, I really need more facts before I put any more work into this. If anyone can come up sources or has any knowledge re: this, pls LMK and I will jump back in there - I have a fair amount of time into it. Not to mention that it is a welcome distraction to remember oldie-goodie epi's instead of bashing Seaver or sweating Hotchc's contract negotiations. I also don't like CM being compared to LOST. Is it really that similiar? Someone pls explain that to me? I don't see that.
Nanci: I'm a little confused about my "past", too...sorry, couldn't help but make a funny about you mis-spelling "post!" Pls laugh w/ me GF:) I may have thought it was you asking if I was only collecting used songs rather than suggesting new music for FUTURE shows then I went on to explain where things stood which I elaborated further in this page just a post or two above. Sorry, but I am now going blind with all these posts and have no time to spend. Hopefully, the right person will see my post and get their answer!
Gubegirl, I really liked your idea of a CM soundtrack. If and when you get things sorted out I loved the song Grey Room by Damien Rice. It was at the end of "Ashes and Dust" 2x19. It had me in tears. I loved Hoch in that ep.
Coming up with excuses for why Reid was allowed to go into the field is just that, excuses....No exceptions had to made by the FBI to accomodate their gimpy employee because he could've done his job from the office in Quantico just as effectively.
It doesn't matter if some of his work could be done at Quantico. The REAL point is that it could be done on the job with the rest of his team. You're comparing apples to apples by trying to insist the second apple is a monkey. Gideon to Reid actually IS a direct comparison. Gideon was out one episode, which was acceptable. Reid was also removed from duty when his injury was at the beginning (he had to lie to go out in the field).
There's NO reason Reid couldn't have been at the cities sitting at the table with them discussing the case. It probably saved more time keeping him with the team than having to fax everything back and forth. It's also kinda ridiculous to argue that after being on crutches for months Reid *still* shouldn't be allowed to walk a cleared crime scene where a family was murdered so that he could see what happened first hand.
It's called "restrictive duty" not "the most restrictive one can think of that goes into overkill since it enforces things that aren't necessary duty".
You're basically saying Reid should have been treated differently just because he was on crutches and a cane. That he should have been isolated for months for no reason, because even though adaptations could have been made in order to keep him with his team, the FBI didn't need to. I'm sure that would go over in the real world. Not.
If Gideon needed to be out longer than that one episode, then adaptations would also have been made - just like Reid.
hey gubegirl, I think that was me who asked about the music thing. and indeed got my answer. I'll try and help you find info on the soundtrack. I think it's a really good idea. Now that finals are almost done and I'm going home I can put a some time into finding an answer to help you! Sorry if I was being a bit redundent and annoying! I just lost in all the post sometimes haha.
There are no horrible fans. Everyone on this site loves the show for reasons of their own to which they are entitled, even if they don't agree with yours. I don't agree with yours but I would never call you a horrible fan.
I think the situation with Reid being in the field was one the writers didn't have a lot of choice with. Matthew's injury was real, it wasn't just something the writer's concocted, though of course, they had to concoct a reason for it. Gideon was only on crutches for one episode but considering that Matthew's injury was much lengthier, they had to do something. They couldn't just write him out. And, if people are crying foul over that then the same could be said of Hotch when he went in the field, actually into the field, with his hearing problem. I think that was more dangerous than having Reid sitting in the precinct.
Karen: Thank you for coming forward! It's easy to go nuts on this blog once it gets to be more than 200-300 posts when you're trying to get something right. Or when you haven't been on for an entire day!
Anyway, I appreciate your offer to help very much. You will see my list earlier on, this thread, and also my comments and responses to anonymous who has written again just a few posts above.
Anything you can learn would be appreciated. I will ck back tomorrow but then will be out of town Thurs-Sun and may have no signal in the mountains! If not, I will get back to you next wk and discuss the soundtrack on whatever thread is open at the time. Hopefully a fresh one, but there is no new epi til 5/4 so who knows?? Thanks again!
P.S. To whomever who sugg it: got the Stones' song by the other artist-thank you!
gubegirl, I probably won't be able to check into anything until the weekend anyway, to be honest. I have my last final tomorrow then I have to move all my stuff back home and unpack. I'll definitely try to have something for you next week when you get back. Have fun and safe trip!!
Spoilers for finale: http://www.tvguide.com/News/Mega-Buzz-Criminal-Minds-1032372.aspx
IMO that's not so much a spoiler as a foregone conclusion. We've been predicting that for ages. Reid's headache storyline for one, has indicated that as a possible cliffhanger ever since "Corazon".
Well, basically it sounds like they found a story that succeeds in leaving open possibilities for any change in cast, rather than focusing on a single character.
The only thing is, it doesn't explain the rejoining of JJ. If the budget is so tight, why re-hire a liaison, with more experience and credentials than before (i.e. more expensive), when the team had been managing without?
Also, a "tighter budget" seems like further confirmation that there is no room for both Prentiss and Seaver.
Another thought, the "tighter budget" idea is kind of ridiculous. In the past 6 years, the BAU has been directly responsible for catching over 100 serial killers (also ridiculous, I know...). Such absurd success does not lend itself to "budgetary" cutbacks. If any real-life unit had this kind of success, politicians would literally be throwing money at it.
Also, tighter budget? Just get rid of the dang private jet...
Oh yeah, there is no way they'd have a cast of 8 series regulars. That is way too expensive production wise considering all of the other expenses the show incurs i.e. guest stars, location costs, crew costs, etc.. It would just be too way out of budget to sustain that many in the cast as series regulars.
Oh sorry, you meant show wise, not real life cast or show wise. I was thinking real life cast wise which would not allow for that many series reulars on top of all of the other costs. Including, no doubt, whatever money TG and SM are asking for this time around. Boy, I hope an agreement can be reached.
Personally, cast-wise if anyone's in danger of not returning, it's Morgan. No way would they not re-sign TG, but SM has been so quiet, it's hard to gauge what's going on there. Team-wise, I can't imagine a scenario where Reid doesn't need an extensive break.
Of course, I'm not including Seaver. I don't really consider her part of the team. Hopefully she'll just get shipped off to wherever she should have been assigned to had Rossi not suddenly developed a daddy-interest in her.

Actually, with the current budget crisis it kinda does. Less staff (maybe not the profilers themselves, but supporting), cuts on items (like paper, coffee, etc), etc. I equate it with the current school crises. Even the best schools have to tighten somewhere.
Help! I see some of you do this thing where it looks as if you copy/paste part of another's comment into your post in italics. I can't seem to do it. I can get the copy/paste part of it but no italics. If you can tear yourselves away from your CM focus for a bit I'd really appreciate your help Thanks

All I do is to use the HTML tags. The scribble below the posting window < i > and < / i > only without any spaces. You put the first little set in front of the text, and the second group after it.
Lord knows, there's probably some better way but this works!
Reading what I just posted, I don't think I was clear.
Miss out the spaces here < i > and here < / i > and put those sets of characters one each side of your quoted text. (The spaces have to be included for the explanation, else the system will just 'read' the code and make things italic.)
Actually, with the current budget crisis it kinda does. Less staff (maybe not the profilers themselves, but supporting), cuts on items (like paper, coffee, etc), etc.
That's why I said things like JJ and the jet don't make sense over potentially splitting up a team that is single-handedly responsible for catching insane amounts of killers.
There are also a bunch of new promo pictures for "Big Sea" up. You'll have to go find them yourselves because I found them on a competing blog and don't want to post the link here.
In case you can't find them, I'll describe the new ones: - bunch of lab techs, local cops, and Hotch in the lab tent - a hilarious shot of Morgan staring rather forlornly out at sea - Seaver and Morgan talking in the lab tent - another angle of Seaver and Morgan - Seaver and the local cop observing Morgan from a distance - really pretty close-up of Seaver

Peace out, fellow CM peeps.

Not.
If Gideon needed to be out longer than that one episode, then adaptations would also have been made - just like Reid.
hey gubegirl,
I think that was me who asked about the music thing. and indeed got my answer. I'll try and help you find info on the soundtrack. I think it's a really good idea. Now that finals are almost done and I'm going home I can put a some time into finding an answer to help you! Sorry if I was being a bit redundent and annoying! I just lost in all the post sometimes haha.
Carlos:
Spoilers for finale: http://www.tvguide.com/News/Mega-Buzz-Criminal-Minds-1032372.aspx
The cliffhanger is going to be that so they can write Thomas or Shemar out if they don't have the money to pay them.
gubegirl,
I probably won't be able to check into anything until the weekend anyway, to be honest. I have my last final tomorrow then I have to move all my stuff back home and unpack. I'll definitely try to have something for you next week when you get back. Have fun and safe trip!!
Season finale spoiler.. not good, not good at all. Smells like a way to get rid of TG or SM :/

Maybe it's just the writers' way of mirroring the real-life CM budget situation that is threatening the team...

Even the best schools have to tighten somewhere.
gubegirl: Sorry 'bout that - if we're talking 'past' then I'm in BIG trouble myself! LOL.
Help!
I see some of you do this thing where it looks as if you copy/paste part of another's comment into your post in italics. I can't seem to do it. I can get the copy/paste part of it but no italics.
If you can tear yourselves away from your CM focus for a bit I'd really appreciate your help
Thanks

All I do is to use the HTML tags. The scribble below the posting window < i > and < / i > only without any spaces. You put the first little set in front of the text, and the second group after it.
Lord knows, there's probably some better way but this works!

Reading what I just posted, I don't think I was clear.
Miss out the spaces here < i > and here < / i > and put those sets of characters one each side of your quoted text. (The spaces have to be included for the explanation, else the system will just 'read' the code and make things italic.)
Hope it works all right for you!

In case you can't find them, I'll describe the new ones:
- bunch of lab techs, local cops, and Hotch in the lab tent
- a hilarious shot of Morgan staring rather forlornly out at sea
- Seaver and Morgan talking in the lab tent
- another angle of Seaver and Morgan
- Seaver and the local cop observing Morgan from a distance
- really pretty close-up of Seaver
lauren j. - with all the "Seaver" involvement, I think I'll pass. Thanks for letting me know.
