Simply put, the most heartbreaking, the most devestating, 42 minutes of TV I have ever had to sit through, bar none. The greatness of what was done by the cast, most notably Thomas Gibson, and the crew, and the awfulness of it, cannot be accurately summed up in words. It's something you can only watch and experience and then try to overcome afterwards.
Intense episode! So sad,I cried when Hotch finds Hayley.Congrats to TG he was fantastic.

Thomas Gibson did an above and beyond job tonight portraying Hotch. I am still speechless after watching this episode. When Hotch tells Jack to go "work the case" and then when he and Hailey say their goodbyes, and both are crying- I was crying while watching. I felt the pain while watching. The emotion of not only Hotch but the entire team during the episode just jumped off the screen. My heart was racing the entire time. Amazing acting tonight by everyone, and awesome writing also. I am proud to call this my favorite show.
I loved the progression of the episode where each character was interviewed. Rossi "boredom" and Emily's hostility and sarcastic "ma'am", and Reid's fierce protectiveness: the way the entire team stood up to Strauss was a verbal slap in the face to her. It was needed and a perfect break for the heart pounding pace of the rest of the episode.
I cant really describe how I felt about this episode. It was like the story came off the screen and I was living each character's emotions: from JJ in the store with Will and Henry saying how she couldnt lose them, to Hotch crying and Hailey saying goodbye and making Hotch give one last promise to the team's reactions in the SUVs from Emily's tears to Garcia's screams. I felt every emotion of the episode- and that's what makes a fantastic show.
Oh and the scene when Hotch goes and gets Jack from his hiding spot, and when he picks him up after his debriefing makes my heartbreak. We finally have scenes of Hotch and Jack, but they are on the worst days of thier lives.(completely off topic, but the little boy is so cute). The whole team gives thier unwavering support to not only Hotch, but Jack to and it shows this team is truly a family.
Once again, a truly amazing performance by Thomas Gibson. I cant imagine how difficult and draining this episode must have been on him. Thanks to him and the rest of the absolutely amazing cast for the spectactular previous episodes, gripping 100th and all future performances to come.
This was the most intense episode i have watched so far and great one. When watching it, my hands were very cold the entire time.

Episode "100" was the best ever! It was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. Superb writing, acting and directing. Everyone deserves an Emmy for this one. You guys do such great work. This Thanksgiving, I'm so thankful to have a show as great as CM. I have never missed an episode since the pilot. I always look forward to Wednesdays. You guys ROCK!!

I should imagine that Hotchner sees himself in a new light, however, Megan, and he ought to. We may be inclined to understand what he did and to forgive him, but he can't afford to repress or forget that new experience.
Killing with his bare hands for reasons of revenge and to prevent still more violence against his family, AH has crossed a line. He usually goes the road of protocol and procedure -- he's a pedantic, stiff thinker in his ways -- and he does of course believe in the legislative process. This wasn't that.
It's an old phrase but he has blood on his hands and now that even this brutal kind of killing has become possible to him, as an agent of law enforcement, he has to take the potential very seriously into account. I don't believe he should let himself go into the field again without a long rehabilitation. The man of principle and protocol should insist upon it himself.
I'm finally coherent enough to write another comment on this awesome and heartbreaking ep. I think most of the important things have already been said so I don't want to repeat everything. I just want to say this: one moment that really hit me, apart from the scenes between Hotch and Haley and the ones where Hotch is crying, is the meeting with Strauss and the board in the end. He can't look her in the eye! He tries a few times and succeeds for a second or so, but then he has to look away again. I think the only people he can really look at right now are his team - because they really understand why he did what he did - and his son because he is the only reason for him to live. I wonder if he can look into the mirror in the morning, and if so, what he sees...
When Hotch ran upstairs to see his son inside the box, and he said "I'm working the case, Daddy" I bawled my eyes out. What an episode. So heartbreaking. Thomas Gibson deserves an Emmy, for sure!
My heart absolutely broke during the phone call... most especially when Jack took the phone.
Unlike, evidently most , people, I felt no joy whatsoever when Hotch killed Foyet - because I know what depth of pain and rage he had to reach to get to that point and it broke my heart. I am not saying I condemn Hotch for it, I don't... just that the pain had to be soo horrible and raw for such a strong hearted man to break.
I thought it was a very good episode, though I don't seem to be as enthralled about it as everybody else does. I was hoping to be surprised but that did not happen, and not because I read spoilers about this episode. After watching Faceless, Nameless I thought that either Jack and/or Haley would end up being a victim of Foyet when they left the hospital with Marshall Sam. I'm not at all knowledgeable about how witness protection or any thing related to law enforcement works but I was so surprised that Haley and Jack would be taken away from a public place, a public place that the unsub had delivered one of his victims to. Still it was an enjoyable episode and I admit to shedding more than a few tears at the end. Very sad to see Haley's demise, I seem to be one of the few who liked her. Great performances by everyone, especially Thomas Gibson, Meridith Monroe and C. Thomas Howell. I'm very curious as to what happens next.
BTW my favourite scenes are the ones with Reid and Strauss and Rossi and Strauss. Strauss is a shrew and a softy and I would love to see her again.

EPISODE RECAP: 100
The episode begins with a recap of the history of George Foyet aka The Reaper. The Reaper is a serial killer from Boston that Hotch first encountered 10 years prior. Foyet made a deal during his first crime spree with a Boston police detective to stop killing as long as the police stopped looking for him. Ten years later the detective died and The Reaper resurfaced taking four additional victims. When the BAU reopened the investigation, The Reaper attempted to make the same deal with Hotch. When Hotch refused to accept the deal, The Reaper killed seven more people on a bus. During the new investigation, the team uncovered the true identity of The Reaper. His name was George Foyet, a man previously thought to have been the lone survivor of The Reaper’s initial crime spree. Turned out Foyet had stabbed himself 19 times to make the police believe he was a victim and not the serial killer.
The team captured Foyet but he escaped and when he was loose he attacked Hotch in his own apartment stabbing Hotch nine times. This prompted Hotch to send his ex-wife Haley and his son Jack into the witness protection program for their protection. It also caused Hotch to step down as Unit Chief of the BAU and name Morgan as acting Unit Chief. In our last episode, Outfoxed, we found that Foyet had sent a couple of letters to Karl Arnold, an inmate that the BAU was responsible for putting behind bars year prior.
Now for 100:
We see a tree-lined street in an upscale suburban neighborhood. The neighborhood is probably usually a quiet one where kids play freely. But not today. Today there are police cars, SWAT trucks, and BAU SUVs. Everything is moving slowly and it appears we are seeing a flashback. There are police officers running around and one officer looks visibly shaken. JJ is bent at the waist with her hands on her knees speaking to someone presumably a child. Reid is walking with a cane along the driveway behind her. The camera pans to the front of a large white house. We see Rossi step out of the house and wave emergency personal towards the front door.
Once inside the house we see officers bent over a body covering it with a white sheet. Camera pans back to Rossi who is leading us though the house. There is blood on the camel colored carpet. We get to the stairs where we are met with Emily Prentiss who leads us upstairs. You can see more blood on the steps. The upstairs landing it littered with debris. The nicely decorated house is wrecked; obviously a major struggle has occurred. The camera follows the blood trail to the master bedroom of the home where we find Morgan bent over yet another body. He looks devastated as he stands up and moves out of the bedroom. He passes a young EMT on the way out and tells him to leave and see if help is needed downstairs. There is obviously nothing to be done with the victim Morgan has checked on.

The next scene is an aerial view of Quantico and the opening quote:

We are in chambers at Bureau Headquarters. Section Chief Erin Strauss is setting up a recording device and is asking JJ to state her name and rank. JJ replies Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer Jareau, Communications Liaison for the Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia. She tells Strauss that she has been part of the unit for six years. Strauss asks if she has worked under Agent Hotchner the entire time. JJ advises Strauss that no, she currently reports to acting Unit Chief Derek Morgan. Strauss appears to be fishing for dirt on Hotch and the current investigation into The Reaper. JJ refuses to cave in to Strauss and stands up for Hotch telling her that it wasn’t just Hotch investigating the whereabouts of Foyet. In fact, the entire team has been working on the case and they had ramped up their investigation when they discovered that Foyet had sent the calling cards to Karl Arnold. JJ tells us that two different letters containing newspaper articles were mailed from two different locations to Arnold. JJ tells Strauss that perhaps she should start from the beginning. Foyet had done a lot of injury to his body when he stabbed himself 19 times several years prior in an effort to paint himself as a victim and not the killer. As a result he became dependant on a large number of extremely strong medications. We discover the team had been searching the country for patients with that exact prescription combination for those medications.
Flashback: JJ is in a drug store speaking with Agent Anderson on her cell phone. She is looking at over the counter cold medications while asking Anderson about the envelopes from Arnold that are flagged urgent and due back from the labs. Evidence Tech Gina tells us that they are clean; no prints, no DNA. Anderson tells JJ the bad news. JJ tells him she doesn’t care if he has to drive to the Post Master General himself, she wants to know where the postmarks were applied before the team gets in. Anderson tells her he’ll get it taken care of. JJ hangs up and, finding the cold medication she is looking for, heads over to her boyfriend Will who is watching their son, Henry, in his stroller. Will tells JJ that Henry still won’t take his bottle. JJ tries and Henry takes it easily. JJ tells Will she can’t imagine going through what Hotch is going through and having to say goodbye to her family. Will says they aren’t going anywhere and they discuss the case briefly. They are next to see the pharmacist who tells the couple only one of their two prescriptions is available. The pharmacist tells JJ that a smaller dosage of an over-the-counter medicine would be the same as the prescription dose. A light goes on in JJ’s head about the possibility that Foyet is using OTC drugs to replace some of his prescribed medications.
JJ tells Hotch that the team has been tracking the entire prescription combination. She suggests that perhaps Foyet has been substituting some of his meds with OTC drugs to mask his purchases. It is their first real break in the case. Hotch tells JJ she’s done good work and to narrow the search to the drugs he can’t substitute. Hotch and JJ head to Garcia’s office to get her into the loop.
Garcia is being paid a visit by her boyfriend Kevin Lynch. Kevin is grossing her out with a bacon-covered doughnut. Hotch and JJ enter Garcia’s office and Hotch tells Kevin he needs to leave right now.
We are back in the present and we see that JJ is no longer in front of Strauss. Garcia is now facing the Section Chief. Garcia is upset and nervous. She is upset that people seem to be asking the wrong questions. That people aren’t more concerned about what The Reaper did and how many people he has hurt. Strauss asks Garcia if she thought that Hotch was acting unreasonable and Garcia says no, he was freaked out about his family and considering what had happened, Hotch was acting perfectly reasonable.
Flashback: We are back in Garcia’s office. We find that the letters sent to Arnold were mailed from Fredericksburg, VA and Westminster, MD. JJ says they can match the drugs that Foyet can’t substitute with the geographic profile. Hotch explains JJ’s theory and asks Garcia to focus solely on drugs that can’t be emulated by OTC medication and can only be dispensed by a pharmacist. He tells her she needs to do it quickly since Foyet doesn’t stay in any one location for very long. Considering how involved this will be, Garcia tells Hotch that she needs Kevin’s help. Hotch and JJ leave to go to the BAU round table room to work on the geographical profile.
In the round-table room, the rest of the team starts talking about the two cities the letters were mailed from. JJ asks what the significance is between the two cities. Morgan offers that perhaps it just might be a forensic countermeasure. The perhaps Foyet drives miles away from the city where he is staying to throw the team off his scent. Reid reminds us that both the Unabomber and the 2001 Anthrax suspect. Rossi states that he could have gone anywhere after his escape but he is still in the DC area. Prentiss says that makes sense. He’d want to stay close to Hotch since he stayed in Boston for years simply for the pleasure of watching the Boston detective deteriorate. Prentiss realizes she misspoke and offers Hotch an apology. Hotch says he knows that Foyet has been watching him and that is one of the reasons he stepped down as Unit Chief so Foyet would think that he was falling apart. Morgan looks at Hotch appearing upset that Hotch has used him as a pawn in his game with Foyet.
Meanwhile Garcia and Kevin are hard at work and they discover that Tapazole, a hyperthyroid medication, is only available by prescription. It’s their missing link. She tells Kevin to print out every name of every person on this medication within a 60 miles radius of the two cities where the letters were mailed from and the team will do the rest. Headed into their conference room, Garcia advises them of their findings. They narrow the list to 153 names. Reid realizes that Foyet would use a name that means something to him. He tries to figure out an anagram our of George Foyet but comes up empty. Hotch reminds him that he dubbed himself The Reaper. Reid hits is again and comes up with the anagram of Peter Rhea. Garcia finds a Peter Rhea on Tapazole in Arlington, VA. They have found The Reaper.
Break
Back in the present day, Strauss is now questioning Rossi. Rossi doesn’t really want to waste his time with her. Rossi thinks she is on a witch-hunt. Strauss explains she is trying to prevent another bloodbath. Strauss wants to know why the team waited so long to go to Foyet’s apartment. Rossi said they needed to wait to make sure Foyet was there. That if they went in and he wasn’t there he would know they had found him. Of course, Rossi says, the longer they waited the more time Foyet had to…. Rossi doesn’t finish his sentence and we flashback to the team keeping Foyet’s apartment under surveillance.
Flashback: Hotch and Prentiss are staking out the apartment in a car nearby while Morgan, Rossi, Reid, and JJ are holed up in a warehouse. JJ advises Morgan that the SWAT team on stand-by is getting antsy. Morgan snaps at her, obviously feeling a little pressured by the situation. He can understand that SWAT is trained to move and not just sit around but he doesn’t want to jump the gun. But one the other hand, Morgan is afraid that every minute they don’t act the further away Foyet gets. Rossi tells Morgan to make the best decision he can.
Next we see a man carrying a toolbox head towards Foyet’s apartment. You can tell by the earpiece he is wearing that he isn’t the building super he claims to be. After assuring no one is home, the man unzips his jacket revealing an FBI Kevlar vest. He takes out a camera on a lead and runs it under the door. The camera reveals an uneaten meal, a laptop on the table, and more importantly, mailed strewn on the floor. Hotch sees the mail scattered on the floor and realizes Foyet hasn’t been there in a while and isn’t coming back. The team springs into action. They charge out of the building across the street yelling go…go…go! The street outside springs to life too. Everyone on the street is a cop or a federal agent...the construction workers, the guys tooling on a car, and even the mom pushing a baby stroller. They enter Foyet’s apartment and find that he left in a hurry; most of his clothes and guns are still in the apartment. Rossi says Foyet is in a hurry and he’ll make a mistake. Hotch replies that when Foyet is cornered, Foyet starts killing. Morgan assures that they won’t let that happen.
They see his laptop is there and deleting records and files as quickly as possible. However, Garcia is faster. She founds out he had an alert out for anyone searching for Peter Rhea. They also find something even more devastating. The team times a picture of Sam Kassmeyer, the US Marshall assigned to protect Hotch’ family, on Foyet’s computer. They realize that Foyet has been watching Kassmeyer this entire time Hotch calls Kassmeyer to warn him. He tells the Marshall to call him to arrange a meet location or the team is on his way to him. Morgan wants to deploy another SWAT unit but it will take too long to arrange to so Hotch takes off to Kassmeyer’s home followed quickly by the rest of the team.
Back to present day and we find Reid now is the one being questioned by Strauss. Reid sits uncomfortably in the chair. She is asking Reid who made the call to head to Kassmeyer’s home instead of waiting for a tactical team. Reid says they all decided there wasn’t enough time and that he knows she is trying to blame Hotch so that they could all just forget about it and move on but that he has an eidetic memory and he knows what really happened.
Flashback: Two black SUVs containing the team pull up in front of Kassmeyer’s home. They notice immediately that the front door is ajar. Rossi pushes it all the way open and Hotch goes in. They sweep the house and find Kassmeyer on the floor alive but badly injured. Kassmeyer tells Hotch he tried and apologizes. Hotch tries to understand what Sam is trying to tell him. Hotch wants to know if Foyet knows where his family is. Kassmeyer is bleeding and barely coherent. He tells Hotch that he isn’t sure how Foyet got into his home.
We see what happened to Kassmeyer in a flashback scene. Kassmeyer walks into his home and we see The Reaper is waiting for him. He shoots Kassmeyer in one leg above the knee knocking him to the ground and asks Kassmeyer where they, meaning Haley and Jack, are. Kassmeyer doesn’t answer so Foyet shoot him in is other leg this time below the knee, knocking him to his back. He repeats the question and when Kassmeyer doesn’t answer, he is shot in his foot. Foyet says he is going to find out one way or another as he steps on the foot he just put a hole through. Kassmeyer screams out in pain but says he will never tell him where Hotch’s family is. Foyet smacks Kassmeyer in the head with the butt of his gun and cuts off one of his fingers but Kassmeyer is still silent. Kassmeyer says Foyet will have to kill him but Foyet says he wants to keep him alive so that he can tell Hotch that it’s his fault that his family is dead.
The paramedics arrive and take Sam via ambulance to the hospital. Hotch jumps into the back of the ambulance so he can talk to Kassmeyer further about what happened and if Foyet knows where his family is. Kassmeyer tells the paramedics not to sedate him; he needs to tell Hotch what happened. We go back to the attack in Kassmeyer’s home.
Realizing the Marshall won’t give up the information he wants despite the torture, Foyet goes about it another way. He realizes that Kassmeyer probably has Haley’s phone number somewhere in his cell phone. He starts randomly dialing Sam’s emergency speed dials and asking whoever answers if Haley is there. He apologizes to all the wrong numbers he gets until he is finally successful in locating Haley.
Haley, now a brunette, is walking down the street in the city she is living in holding Jack’s hand when she gets a call from who she thinks is Sam. The real Sam tries to call out to warn Haley and Foyet stomps on his face to quiet him. Foyet tells Haley that his name is Victor Collins and that he is with the US Marshall’s service. He tells her that both Kassmeyer and Hotch have been killed and that he needs her to come in so that they can keep her and Jack safe. Haley is obviously shaken but tries to hide that from her son. He tells her to dispose of the cell phone she has and to buy a disposable one and call him back. He tells her not to attempt to call anyone because her call could possibly be intercepted. Haley, concerned for her son’s safety, does what the man she thinks is a Marshall asks her to.
Kassmeyer is able to relay this information to Hotch. He apologizes to Hotch just as he dies. Hotch realizes in horror that his family is in mortal danger
Break
We next see an impatient foot taping and realize that it is now Prentiss’ turn to undergo Strauss’ interrogation. She sits in the hall waiting her turn, picking at her nails. Anderson comes out of the briefing room and tells Prentiss that it’s her turn now. She goes in as Reid comes out and he gives her a slight smile of encouragement. Given their history, you can tell Prentiss still feels a lot of contempt for Strauss. Prentiss sternly addresses Strauss as “ma’am” drawing it out so you can feel the distrust. Emily defends Hotch and his actions vehemently and it the only one outwardly combative with Strauss. Strauss asks her what happened after Hotch left in the ambulance. Prentiss replies that the team contacted the US Marshall’s office and they were told that Haley was in the wind, that she had disposed of her cell phone and that they had no way to track her. Strauss asks Emily what Hotch’s reaction was.
Flashback: Hotch calls Morgan as he leaves the hospital to tell him what Kassmeyer told him. Hotch tells Morgan than Foyet called Haley from Kassmeyer’s phone. Morgan has JJ call Garcia to put a trace on it. Hotch tells the team that Foyet told Haley that Hotch was dead and to throw away her phone so he can’t call her to warn her. Morgan wants to go pick Hotch up but Hotch tells him that Anderson is bringing him a car. The team tries to figure out where Haley is. Witness Protection had her living in New Jersey. They realize with the head start Foyet has he could already be where Haley’s been hiding.
JJ tells the team that Garcia has a trace on Kassmeyer’s phone. He’s bouncing between cell sites in Fairfax County, Virginia, which means he is still in the area. Hotch tells Garcia to send the coordinates to his phone. The team tries to figure out where Haley is being lured to and why Foyet isn’t on his way to NJ. Kassmeyer’s phone is still being traced by Garcia and is still on. Garcia sees an incoming call and tells the team that Hotch is calling Foyet. They can hear the conversation between Hotch and Foyet.
Hotch is driving towards the coordinates that Garcia has given him. He tells Foyet.
“If you touch her”
Foyet replies, “Be gentle like I was with you?” referring to the attack in Hotch’s apartment when Foyet stabbed him nine times.
The team listens to the conversation between Hotch and his nemesis. Hotch is trying to get to Foyet by bringing up his troubled childhood but Foyet is not falling for it. Hotch is telling Foyet he doesn’t have to continue with his plan. Hotch tells him he isn’t just a famous serial killer, he is The Reaper and they will be studying him for years to come.
“Know what I’ve been thinking?” Foyet tells Hotch
Hotch doesn’t answer
“Haley looks pretty good with dark hair. She’s lost some weight, must be all the stress you’ve caused her. Where’s the little man?” Foyet taunts Hotch
Hotch can only listen
“Oh…there he is. Does he like Captain America because of you?” Foyet says noticing that Jack is wearing a Captain America t-shirt.
Haley calls the man she thinks is a US Marshall and Foyet tells him that his wife is calling him and told hold please. He asks Haley to open the gate and he’ll drive in. Hotch has tears in his eyes as he realizes that a serial killer has his family.
Back in the present we see it is now Morgan recalling the incident to Strauss. Strauss asks Morgan if Hotch was driving around aimlessly in search of Foyet. Morgan replies that they had the profile and if they used it they would know where he took Hotch’s family.
Flashback: The team is working the profile. They know Foyet needs to be in control and that he had to have said something in his conversation that would tell Hotch exactly where he was. Morgan has Reid recall the conversation verbatim. They figure out that Foyet has lured Haley and Jack home. They are at their house, the house where Hotch used to live with his family. It is everything to him and will have the biggest emotional impact possible.
Morgan calls Hotch to let him know Foyet is going to his house. Hotch has already figured that out and is headed there. Morgan tells Hotch he is sending out a full tactical deployment and that the team is on their way. Morgan is driving, Rossi is riding shotgun, and JJ and Prentiss are in the backseat. Garcia is still tracking Kassmeyer’s phone and she sees Foyet is calling Hotch. She is able to connect it so that the agents can listen to the phone call. Except they hear Haley and not Foyet on the line.
Haley is shocked that Aaron is still alive. Hotch tries to remain calm. Haley is confused but quickly realizes that she and Jack are in trouble and that the man playing with her son is not a US Marshall. Hotch asks if Foyet can hear their conversation and Haley says yes. Hotch tells Haley not to show Foyet any weakness or fear. Hotch tries to quell Haley’s fear by telling her that Sam is fine. Foyet asks if that is why their marriage broke up…because Hotch is a liar. He tells Haley he can prove Sam is dead. Foyet continues to taunt Hotch and Hotch can barely hold back his emotions as Foyet tells Haley about the deal Hotch refused to give Foyet.
Haley looks confused and she isn’t sure what to believe. Hotch tells Haley Foyet is only trying to make her angry.
“Well, she should be. She’s gonna,” Foyet pauses to cover Jacks’ ears. “D.I.E. because of your inflated ego.” Foyet tells Hotch.
Haley is even further confused when Foyet tells her that all Hotch had to do was to stop looking for him and she and Jack wouldn’t be in this mess. Hotch tells Haley not to react. Haley asks her ex-husband what Foyet is talking about. Hotch tells Haley to tell Jack that Hotch needs him working the case. Haley says what and Hotch repeats himself. Haley understands what Hotch is telling her and asks Jack if he heard his daddy.
Haley gives Jack the phone to speak with his daddy. Jack asks Hotch if George is a bad guy. Hotch tells him yes and that he needs Jack on the case with him. That he needs him to work the case. Jack says okay and Hotch tells him to hug his mom for him. Haley hugs him as if it is the last time she will ever hold her son. She apologizes for squeezing him so hard and he asks her if she is sad. She replies that she loves him so much and pulls him into another hug. Jack tells his mom he has to go because he’s working the case. Haley can’t hold back her tears as she watches her son leave her for what she fears will be the last time.
“He’s so cute. He’s like a little junior G-man.” Foyet tells Haley. “I’ll be right up Jackie boy” he calls out.
Haley is wiping her tears, determined to be strong.
“Is he gone?” Hotch asks worriedly about his son.
“Yes” his ex-wife replies
We see the team’s reactions to what they are hearing. JJ and Emily are both stunned by what they are listening to.
“You’re so strong, Haley. You’re stronger than I ever was.” Hotch says
“You’ll hurry, right?” Haley asks hoping beyond hope that Aaron will make it in time. She watches as Foyet moves behind her.
“I know you didn’t sign on for this,” Hotch tells her with tears falling from his eyes.
“Neither did you,” Haley replies as she tries to remain calm
“I’m sorry for everything,” Hotch says
Haley feels Foyet pressed up against her and knows she doesn’t have long.
“Promise me that you well tell him how we met. And how you used to make me laugh.”
“Haley,” Hotch interrupts. He doesn’t want her to give up.
“He needs to know that you weren’t always so serious, Aaron. I want him to believe in love.” Haley says, her own tears now running down her face as she feels Foyet’s gun start to trace along her back. “ Because it is the most important thing. But you need to show him. Promise me.”
Hotch is crying and trying to make it to the only woman that he has ever loved in time to save her. “I promise,” he tells her.
Haley breathing is ragged as she knows her end is near.
Hotch hears a gunshot and closes his eyes.
Garcia is visibly distraught as she hears the gunshot while in her office in Quantico.
JJ and Emily are shaken as they hear the gunshots too, both try to remain strong and not cry. Rossi and Morgan can’t believe what they heard either and look at each other as the line goes dead. Hotch closed and threw down his phone thus ending the call.
Back in the briefing room, Morgan tells Strauss he doesn’t know what happened after that.
Break
We see Hotch drive his sedan and park it in front of his house. He opens the door and runs toward his home without closing it. Hotch enters with his gun drawn, he is not wearing a vest. He sweeps through his former home looking for Haley or Foyet. He grabs a flashlight from a drawer in the brightly lit kitchen to help him search some of the darker rooms. He sees the bloodstains on the camel colored carpet. He follows the tracks up the stairs and he finds Haley in the master bedroom. She is obviously dead. He can hardly contain his tears but he knows there isn’t anything he can do for her. He needs to find Foyet before Foyet finds Jack.
Hotch notices something in the room. He feels Foyet is near. Turning quickly, he fires several shots into the curtains in the bedroom. A body falls to the ground. Hotch runs over to it and throws the gun Foyet had used to kill Haley to the side. He turns Foyet over and sees Foyet is wearing a bulletproof vest just as Foyet punches him in the face, which knocks the gun out of Hotch’s hand. Hotch reaches for his secondary weapon in his leg holster and shoots Foyet in the back as he is running away. The shots knock Foyet to the ground but do not do any damage because of the vest he is wearing. Foyet turns and fires his weapon at Hotch. Luckily he misses.
Hotch pursues and tackles Foyet sending them hurtling down the stairs. Hotch hits his head hard on the wall at the base of the landing but gets up quickly and kicks Foyet hard in the ribs. The struggle continues with Hotch beating Foyet and slamming him into walls. They crash into walls and Hotch grabs Foyet and pulls him backwards into the dining room table. This dazes Hotch and Foyet gets the upper hand. Foyet punches Hotch in the face and smashes a crystal bowl onto Hotch’s head.
The slightly dazed, beaten, and exhausted Foyet grabs for his knife.
“After I finish you, I’m going to find that little bastard son of yours and I’m going to show him both of his dead parents and I’m going to tell him that it was all your fault,” Foyet says pointing his knife at Hotch. “And then I’m…”
Foyet’s rant is cut short when Hotch hits him in the knee with a leg from the broken table. An angry Hotch gets up and tackles Foyet into the wall then Hotch throws him to the ground and begins punching Foyet.
Foyet tells Hotch he surrenders but Hotch knows Foyet will never give up. Hotch punches Foyet and keeps punching him. All of the terrible things this man has done…the murders in Boston, Haley’s dead face, The Reaper’s black mask, Jack’s innocent face, Foyet stabbing Hotch in his own apartment…flash through Hotch’s mind as he beats Foyet with his bare hands.
We hear Morgan call Hotch’s name as he comes into the dining room with Prentiss and Rossi close behind. Morgan pulls Hotch off of Foyet telling Hotch that Foyet is dead. Prentiss and Rossi take in what they see in the room. Morgan tells Hotch that it is over. Hotch suddenly bolts from Morgan’s grasp and heads out of the room.
In another flashback we see Hotch working in his office. He is sitting at his desk, which is facing the window. There is a window seat next to the desk and Hotch hears a knock coming from inside the window seat. He opens the top of it and finds Jack inside lying down holding a flashlight. Hotch smiles at his son.
“What are you doing?” Hotch asks chuckling
“I work the case with you dad,” comes Jacks reply.
“Jack, I’m glad you’re working the case with me. You know I can always use your help.” Hotch tells his young son.
A bloodied Hotch rushes into his old office and opens the top of the window seat. Hoping that Jack has understood what he was trying to tell him.
“I work the case daddy just like you said,” Jack tells Hotch
“You did great,” a relieved Hotch replies lifting Jack from inside the hidden chamber.
JJ and Reid find Hotch trying to explain to his son that he’s okay. Hotch tells Jack to go outside with Ms. Jareau. JJ picks Jack up and removes him from the house. Hotch breaks down after his son leaves. Hotch walks into his bedroom and finds Morgan checking Haley for any sign of life but there aren’t any to be found. Morgan tells Hotch he is sorry. Hotch is visibly upset about Haley’s death. He pulls her lifeless body to his chest and cries. Morgan tells the young EMT to leave and see if they need any help downstairs. Morgan wants to give Hotch time to grieve in private.
Back to the present and Strauss’ review of the incident. It is Hotch’s turn. He quietly tells Strauss there wasn’t anything he could do for her. Strauss is obviously upset about what transpired. Despite her cold and sometimes hostile treatment of the BAU, specifically Hotch, you can tell this incident has upset her and that she feels badly for Hotch. Strauss tells Hotch that Haley died relatively quickly, that one of her wounds severed her aorta and that the medical examiner doesn’t think Haley suffered much.
“Agent Hotchner, what do you think would have happened if George Foyet had gotten up from that floor?” Strauss asks Hotch. “If you didn’t kill him?”
A bruised and beaten Hotch replies softly, “I don’t have to think, I know that he would have tried to kill my son, too.”
“That’s good enough for me,” Strauss tells Hotch. Strauss turns off the tape recorder and asks the other members of the review committee if they have any questions. The say no and leave. Hotch remains seated numbly in his chair then turns to get up and leave.
“Agent Hotchner,” Strauss begins. “I’m so sorry for your loss. And…if you or your son need anything…” she’s not sure how to continue.
Hotch simply thanks her and leaves.
Hotch takes the elevator to the BAU offices on the 6th floor. He goes to the round table room where he finds his team, his family, looking after his son. Jack runs over to his daddy and Hotch picks him up and hugs him. The episode ends with the team surrounding Hotch and Jack. No words need to be spoken to let you know that the team will be there for the two of them during this very difficult time.

to describe how i feel after " crying and nails biting ". But i have to say, please do it again to me.
The scene with Hotch and Haley talking at the phone was touching my heart!
I loved the whole cast in this episode. Love to see that JJ grows more up in the team. You all did a great job. But there is one actor I want to point out. Thomas Gibson, he deserves an Emmy for this acting!!!
I want to say thank you to the crew. I know that all writers worked on this episode. You guys do such an amazing job. Hope we can see more team episodes like this again.
Meredith Moore was also so fantastic , sorry to see her go.
The BEST TV show I have ever seen. The entire group is spectacular!
Truly fantastic episode. There is so much to say but so much of it has been said already, but the one thing that can't be said too often is what an amazing performace by Thomas Gibson! We saw Hotch at the total edge of angst and the extreme of himself, yet through Gibson's performace, he remained true to everything we have come to know of Hotch. Mr. Gibson didn't take the opportunity to show off his acting skills but rather to play true to his character in this desperate situation. You saw the extreme of Hotch but it never felt out of character. He did not seem like a stranger, his movements, his expressions, his tears, were all from the character we knew.
I know people have various different views about the way Hotch killed Foyet and it is a difficult one. It was certainly gruesome, but again I don't think out of character and I don't think it will cause him to reconsider himself as someone else said. In the episode Ashes to Dust, Gideon pushes Hotch to tell him what he would do to the unsub if he were in the dying man's shoes and Hotch ferociously says he'd make him burn. I think, as someone else said, the thing about Hotch is the struggle to contain the monsters inside himself. I think he has always been aware of them and of the fine line between being who he tries to be and being who he might be. And, while I'm not generally in favour of such violence on tv, I think that from a storytelling perspective, we have seen Hotch kill unsubs before so this killing had to be different and had to personal. (And believe me that is not something I would have ever thought of myself as saying!)
All the cast were great tonight - but I particularly loved Reid's interaction with Strauss. It was so self-assured and sharp and shows just how strong someone can grow in a 100 episdoes.

This was an amazing episode, so wrought with tension and emotion. The cast did a superb job and the writers gave us an awesome episode not only for the show's 100th but to bring the Foyet/Hotch storyline to an epic end. Kudos to Thomas Gibson, C Thomas Howell, and Meredith Monroe, the scenes after The Reaper found Haley and Jack were so emotional. Though I already knew that Haley was going to die, it still shocked me when the gun went off.
I also loved many other things in this episode:
- The way JJ handled Strauss and stood up for Hotch. She put on her professional mask and treated Strauss like the most difficult interview she'd ever given.
- Such a treat to see Henry and knowing that was AJ's son made it even more special. Thank you AJ Cook for sharing Mekhai with us for a few minutes. What an adorable little boy.
- JJ being the one that broke the case and helped finally find The Reaper.
- Bacon doughnut...ew!
- Garcia being the only one truly emotionally upset speaking with Strauss because that is so true to her characer.
- Reid being so smart in this episode.
- The way Reid explained what Kassmeyer was going through from a point of view of someone who had once been tortured himself.
- EMILY PRENTISS! God I love the way the woman spoke to Strauss. The way she says "Ma'am", "That isn't what happened", and "Is there a question in there?" speaks volumes about the way Prentiss feels about Strauss. You could feel the contempt Emily still has for Strauss and, if you're a true fan, you knew exactly why Emily was so bristled by the inquisition.
- Jack being such a smart boy and knowing exactly what his daddy was trying to tell him when he was told to "work the case"
- The team! This team! This family!! I love them all...
Great job everyone!! You made me cry, you made me smile. Thomas Gibson deserves an Emmy nomination for this episode alone. Congrats on your 100th episode. I've enjoyed the ride so far and look forward to what I hope will be at least 100 more.
Unbelievably amazing, phenomenomally emotional episode! I knew it would be spectacular, and having been away over the holiday, saw several spoilers prior to watching last nite (Fri.) and still sobbed and gasped thru-out the entire show that was stellar to say the least. I can't think of enough superlatives to describe the quality of this show...this episode. The writers and entire cast outdid themselves. I'll bet they were drained and overcome when the filming was over. Multiply what we, the fans, felt while watching, by a hundred times to know how they must have felt upon completion!
The entire cast was incredibly sensitive yet strong - not one thing lacking in anyone's performance and all so true to character.
I especially loved the composition of the episode, using flashback/flash forwards to tell the story - exceptionally well done. Very organized and methodical but mesmerizing nonetheless. Didn't leave any facts out and it all made sense, if such an evil, ill, horrifically cruel man such as Foyet can be made sense of at all.
TG was at his very best and I agree with you all: an Emmy next time around should be coming his way. Those tears and his interaction with Haley was so very touching. Their pain was palpable. As was that of the team afterwards, having been involved so closely from the very beginning of this stressful saga that has dragged out for so many weeks.
HardKorr, you did an amazing job of re-telling the story, thank you very much. It will help me to explain to my sister when she comes over for a rushed-lunch-hour viewing of my DVR'd "100" later next week - it is alot to digest.
Someone please explain to me what the little books celebrating the 100th epi are: memory scrapbooks for each cast member maybe? Who made them? Being a fan and an avid scrapbooker, I am hoping so and I think whatever they are, if they commemorate this show and all the hard work that went into the past 4 1/2 years, I think they are a wonderful memento that will be treasured forever by all those lucky enough to receive one.

The books are a collection of what the fans on the Criminal Minds Fanatic board wrote for each characters.
The idea was to tell Ed and everyone working on CM what the show and the characters mean to us. So anyone who wanted to participate had to write a text for each characters and post it on the board. A few were also asked if they would write longer essay about each characters. Then Lanna and HardKorr collected all the posts on the board and all the essay then work on making the books, layout, artworks, printing then a copy was made for Ed and one for each actors.
It was our way to commemorate the 100th episode.

I have watched this episode three times now … and each time it’s left me profoundly effected with it’s intensity & raw emotion, to the cast & crew of this wonderful show, THANK YOU, you are truly amazing gifted people.. this masterfully crafted show never disappoints each and every week but this episode notched that scale up a 100 times over with it’s sheer brilliance
I’m truly proud to be a Criminal Minds fan with it’s phenomenal talent, I know a lot goes in to bring us 44 minutes of brilliance each week, but the quality & pure excellence of pulling it together & the level of attention to detail gets me every single time, “100” just took it to a whole other level .. I noticed the distressed officer in the middle of the street & JJ in the garden in the opening scene which moved onto Rossi beckoning the Emergency Response Team, Emily taking them through, the devastation written on Morgan’s face & the medic he speaks to as Emily stands in the background all of this coming together at the end … every single bit of detail all the way through the episode was flawless
As many have said before this Thomas Gibson’s performance was truly breath taking, I’m sure this would not have been easy to pull off and goes to show what a truly brilliant actor he is, alongside Meredith Monroe & C. Thomas Howell, every single performance was perfect. The interview sequence was brilliantly done, Rossi, Emily & Reid bringing Strauss down a peg or two awesome!.. every single one of the interviews in it’s own right was brilliant and hit the mark, and finally better late than never to see that Strauss does have a heart!!
The brilliance of Jack working the case was so well done & to see the linkage & happier time with Hotch was amazing, absolutely heart wrenching goodbye & to see Hotch going through their silent home, the lack of score & just the sound of him as he moved through the rooms was gut wrenching but again brilliantly put together, not being able to go to Haley or check on Jack until he had taken the Reaper down was heartbreaking … again the detail of their home, the pictures on the walls, the play room with Jack’s paintings on the wall, Hotch getting the torch out of the kitchen drawer … little details but so brilliantly put together
What you wouldn’t do to protect your family the theme woven through the episode JJ & her family (her little boy is gorgeous), from the quotes to the interviews where the entire team had his back, to Hotch taking down the Reaper, the end scenes with Hotch & Strauss & the team with Jack & Hotch bring tears to my eyes even now as I write this. The Hotch / Morgan scene was powerful & heartbreaking & poor Hotch as he takes Haley into his arms … oh god I’m going to cry now .. phenomenal phenomenal episode …
Total agreement from me Thomas Gibson deserves an Emmy for this episode alone …
