CRIMINAL MINDS QUOTES & SONG INFO FOR "LEGACY"
Criminal Minds: The quotes and song used in Criminal Minds "Legacy" were:
"Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well- warmed, and well-fed". Herman Melville
"Nothing is permanent in this world, not even our troubles". - Charlie Chaplin
The music was: Left for Dead by Citizen Cope

Did anyone else recognize the song the killer was whistling--"Joanna" from Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. I love it!

Oh, that's cool. And sick :) Thanks for pointing that out.
And thanks to Jill and slashgirl for the quotes. I only heard the first half of the Chaplin quote because my mom talked over the rest, saying something like "oh, thanks for sharing that." GRRR. People just don't listen. Nice to get the whole thing. (Although the quotes tend to bug me, too...)
How did slash catch the quotes? I was too busy being scared crapless. lol. Loved the episode.
I loved the Chaplin quote. Thanks for posting them.
Thanks janeegg.
I liked the contrast of the opening and closing quotes. The first was by one of the greatest social critics of the 19th century, and very heavy, just like the story.
The closing quote tells us to lighten up.
Thank you for pointing that out. I had not realized but that makes so much sense. They used the quotes to open and close the story. Thanks.
The quotes are always good but I think I am missing the greater significance of Chaplin. I think there has to be a point behind it that I am missing. Help!
Chaplin was a very astute student of human behavior like out team. His success was based on it.
I think it also had to do with the fact that Chaplin was funny to Gideon and Hotch and they shared that with the young ones. Like parents educating kids on 8 track machines.
I really like the Chaplin quote. It is inspiring.
It is inspiring and I liked both quotes and the man who said them. lol
I liked the quotes but not the music which is like a first for me. It just did not work for me but that is okay. The episode was great.
I liked the quotes. Desperation and hope.
Melville nailed it just right in his quote.
The quotes were great.
I loved the quotes. Chaplin's is very moving.
Nothing in the world is permanent-----
Loved it.
Liked the quotes and I just wasn't paying enough attention to the song. I will when I rewatch the episode.
Thanks jane. I had not caught it.

As others have said, comedians are often very good at profiling, too; they need to know not only what's funny to which people, but why. Understanding the nature of humor is a tough job, because there aren't really any patterns to go by. The BAU has their statistics and their pigeon-holes for suspects, but Chaplin just had his people-radar and the knowledge of what he himself found funny.
Also, Chaplin goes to the "legacy" theme of the show. The film is Gideon's family legacy, just as the detective's job is his, and the house of death is the unsub's. It comes down to how you use your inheritance to change who you are, or to deal with the life you've chosen. There are four legacies here: Gideon's, the detective's, the unsub's and his accomplice's. And they can all be used as a means of control; the heir either lets his inheritance control him and the direction of his life, or he uses it to rid himself of the ways his life imprisons him (the way Gideon uses Chaplin to take himself and the others away from the horror of their everyday lives for a little while).
Wonderful thoughts Lisa. I liked the quotes and the music.
I love thinking about the quotes and trying to figure out what the episode writer is trying to say.
I liked the Melville quote. Is there a larger meaning than what I got out of it?
Val: I think he is talking about moral irresponsiblity.
Sweeney Todd creepy.
I liked the quotes but not the music. Can I still be a part of the CM team?
Sometimes I like the music and not the quotes. LOL. We hardly all agree on everything so jump right in. I did like the music and the quotes. I thought the quotes were especially good last night.
I liked the quotes and I was not wild about the music.
Thanks for posting them for us.
You all have such wonderful insights about the show. Super!
Great quotes.
I like the quotes they use on Criminal Minds. The ones they used in this episode were easier to relate back to the story than some of the other episodes.
Loved them. Thanks for posting them on the blog for all of us.
I love watching the old Charlie Chaplin movies. He was genius.
I really have gotten some great insight here on the quotes. Thanks.
Chaplin's bio is very interesting if anyone ever has time to read it.
I really liked the quote and I will read up on Chaplin.
