Criminal Minds: The relationship between Jason Gideon (Mandy Patkin) and Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) is an interesting one. Any thoughts? :)

yet once more it could possible be a case of mentor(as with reid) but one that has surpassed it's self with both men giving a guiding way to the jnr memebers of the team and both surporting eachother, lots of resect from one to the other,as we have seen as each epsiode of cm has been shown, especially the last one.both men have grown towards a very deep friendship.
I think they've been working together a long time. They seem to know what the other is thinking/about to do, and they work very smoothly together. In "Evilution" (ugh, I still hate that title!), it wasn't just that Hotch covered for Gideon, it was that Gideon knew without a doubt that he would. Very believable, very understated, and yet very real. They are absolutely on the same wavelength. And the team seems to rely on that partnership as well. There's never a case of "who should I tell about this, the other one might be mad" or whatever. They're like good parents -- the kids know they can't play them off against each other.
No two people on the team know each better than these two. They know each other's strengths and weaknesses. I think there is a genuine bond and respect between them. I think they would do anything to protect each other. I also think Hotchner is walking in Gideon's path. He needs to realize it and change.
They have a complicated relationship. Gideon doesn't give him enough guidance but I think he truly cares for him. Hotch forgets sometimes that Gideon has forgotten more than most people know. I do think they care for each other.
They are the parents of the group. Reid, Prentiss, Garcia, JJ and Morgan are all still learning from them. I agree that they are their own best counsel.
I seem to be agreeing with Lin again. The trend today I guess. I think they are so intuned with each other and the trust is there and taken for granted. There relationship is actually one of the easiest to figure out of all the team members.
There are times when I just do not understand why Gideon doesn't sit Hotch down and talk to him about how he is screwing up his personal life. I will never forget the time he said....call her from the plane. Gideon should know better and be a better friend.
I don't think Hotch is following in Gideon's footsteps. I think he is having similar experiences but Hotch wants the rise in the ranks and I don't remember that ever being said about Gideon. As far as following in his personal, breaking up your family, never home footsteps, I think that is not just isolated to Gideon. I would imagine anyone working in that type of law enforcement confront the same problems.
I think Gideon & Hotch enjoy a close relationship based on years of trust.
Their private conversations are some of CM's finest moments. I also loved the scenes of them watching the Chaplin movies together. Nice seeing them smile and enjoy their time together.
I have always thought of them as equals. Hotchner doesn't have the experience that Gideon has in profiling and Hotchner knows how to move past emotion much better than Gideon. Put them together and you have a whole lot of greatness.
I think they are pretty great individually but I do understand what you are saying Katie. I just think they are both very different personalities with very different histories. Of course I am guessing on the history part since we know so little. I see them as friends who share a mutual respect and understanding about the other.
I think it is impossible for us to know what BAU agents feel emotionally. The show tries to give us some taste of it and it is pretty raw stuff. I imagine that the only people you would be able to discuss it with would be another agent. Hotch and Gideon have known each other for a long time and I think they know each other like only two agents can. Their level of trust has certainly been high with each other. I think they are much like an old married couple. They know each other's good and bad points.
They have known each other for a very long time and know each other very well. I agree with that but I think they also like each other. The respect is obvious but I think there is a real friendship there.
I needed to take some time before answering this one. I think they have a mutual respect and connection with each other. I also think they are both extremely dependent on the other and they know it. In rough times they seek each other out before anyone else.
I'm re-watching the first three seasons of Criminal Minds, and I had missed the first episode the first time through.
Gabriel wasn't an active agent at the beginning, but it always seems that Hotchner defers to Gideon, and I don't mean mentor, but almost like a boss. Gideon acted like his position was higher than Hotchner.

They count on each other. I think the things Hotch confides in Gideon are things he would share with nobody else. I think they are great partners.

I think they turn to each other when really necessary but they don't seem to share everyday friend things. That's ok.
There are times when I just do not understand why Gideon doesn't sit Hotch down and talk to him about how he is screwing up his personal life. I will never forget the time he said....call her from the plane. Gideon should know better and be a better friend.
I think they have tremendous respect and admiration for each other.

They have a respect and friendship born from years of working together and basically living together. I like their relationship.
Their private conversations are some of CM's finest moments. I also loved the scenes of them watching the Chaplin movies together. Nice seeing them smile and enjoy their time together.
They've aged together. They are like an old married couple in many ways.
I think I hold an unpopular view of their relationship in this fandom. I think Hotch holds Gideon together mentally.
I have always thought of them as equals. Hotchner doesn't have the experience that Gideon has in profiling and Hotchner knows how to move past emotion much better than Gideon. Put them together and you have a whole lot of greatness.

I think they are truly very good friends.
I think it is a friendship and trust born from learning and having to trust and count on each other to stay alive and get the job done.
Who better to bond and trust then the person who understands your stress and challenges as well as you do? They are their own best resource!

Two fragile men who count on and need each other.

No.
Ying and Yang!

I think that it is a combo of mentor, friend and co-worker. They obviously trust each and I think they do feel friendship.
i loved their relationship on the show..they understood each other without speaking !!
