CRIMINAL MINDS: QUOTES & SONGS.
Criminal Minds: "The Riddle" by Five for Fighting featured in "The Fisher King, Part Two". Thanks to seahershey80 for posting this for us.
I had the opportunity to sit next to and talk with one of the brilliant writers of Criminal Minds, Andrew Wilder for a long time before my first day ended. One of the first questions I asked him was who picks the songs and quotes used because I love them so much. He was smiling when he told me that the writers make those choices. He said that the songs are easier to pick then the quotes. Of course I couldn't stop myself from asking where they found the quotes. God Bless Google is all I have to say. More on Andrew later and then we move on to Day Two. :)
One of my all time favorite songs from the show. I loved it and then bought it.
ReplyDeleteI could do quotes all day long -- I collect 'em as a hobby -- but songs? I'd suck.
ReplyDeleteThey do a great job with both! I'd love to know if it ever goes backwards -- if they stumble on an awesome song that gives them inspiration for a story.
My favorite Reid-ism: 'Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.' (Dr. Seuss)
I end up buying almost all the songs. They make very good selections and the quotes are inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThey really use Google!? They must have some idea in mind ahead of time.
ReplyDeleteHe explained to me that they google the message or lesson from the show and look at quotes that way. It makes sense if you think about it. Every episode has a definate feel to it so googling would be a great tool. :)
ReplyDeleteLin, I love that Suess quote.
ReplyDeleteI love The Riddle. I call it my Spencer song. It is my 2 year olds favorite. Great song choices for every episode. Kudos to the writers!
ReplyDeleteLee :)
That's cool about the quotes Jill! I also Google them.LOL. I tend to use a quote in my introduction to a paper I'm writing. Like the theme of the episode, I use a quote pertaining to the topic of my paper. So it's good to know they use that search engine. Hehehe ;)
ReplyDeleteAh, the almighty Google. That is very good to know.
ReplyDeleteI have three songs from CM episodes; "The Riddle" is the only one I knew and loved before it was used (to exquisite effect) in Fisher King. The others are Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" (A Real Rain) and Deadman's "When the Music's Not Forgotten" (What Fresh Hell?).
I love the music on this show. Sometimes, of course, they have a bit too much of the "cue spooky music" music and the "racing against the clock" music for my taste, but the songs they choose are always beautiful and evocative, and they always suit the moment perfectly.
****sherlock: I can't find your email address and want your opinion on something. Please email me again***** Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE their music choices... it was a very nice surprise to hear a song from my favorite band Band of Horses during 'Revelations.' Perfect song choice.
ReplyDeleteFunny how well a show can work when you get all the right kind of people to work together!
ReplyDeleteI love the quotes. I think the first quote sets the tone or the mood for the episode and when they do not do a closing quote I always notice and it seems like something is missing.
ReplyDeleteThe Riddle is one of my favorites. I love it and whenever I hear the song come on the radio I think of Criminal Minds.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about it that has to be hard to pick just the right songs and quotes. Sometimes they have the song play too long but for the most part it does add to the show.
ReplyDeleteI love Lin's Dr. Seuss line. That is soooo Matthew.
ReplyDeleteI like the quotes but sometimes they are too vague and it leaves me wondering what the relevance is to the story.
ReplyDeleteI like the quotes as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd the choice of music has been really spot on sometimes. Nice to hear the Pixies again!

I think the music selections are great. I am not a big fan of the quotes unless Gideon says them.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I recall from the S1 DVDs, the quotes started out as an insight to Gideon's character, and I really like that, but I also like the fact that the others voice them from time to time in episodes that really affect them or feature them.
ReplyDeleteWhoever picked The Riddle is my best friend. Love the song. Play it all the time.
ReplyDeleteLove the quotes - that's why I started to make those pics with them... pure admiration...

Love the quotes and love the songs and love the show and WANT A NEW EPISODE soon, please.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the actors have any say in the music at all. I wonder what they would pick and please for the love of all things holy get Mandy to sing.
ReplyDeleteI like Wikiquote, Infoplease, quotationspage, Yahoo/reference/quotations.
ReplyDeleteI like the quotes, too. I don't care if I understand them, esp. the ones at the beginnings, for which we have no context. If I tried to remember the beginning quotes till the end of the ep, it would feel like too much of a quiz! lol
I almost never pay attention to the music. I guess I'm more of a visual person. I suppose I'd miss it if it weren't there, tho.
I love the quotes. For me when Gideon does them I can feel the episode better.
ReplyDeleteLove the quotes. I like having to figure some of them out.
ReplyDeleteThe show hooks me up with many songs that I wasn't listening to before or did not know. Loved The Riddle.
ReplyDeleteLove the quotes.
ReplyDeleteHow handy is google?
ReplyDeleteHaha.
Their quotes and songs are always the best.
I love the quotes. They are one of the many reasons why I love this show so much. They put perspective into life and the show itself. The show is an example of the quotes. You can take the quotes and put them into your own life...inspiration.
ReplyDelete:)
I'd have to really listen to more of the songs, as they put into the episodes. I've noticed that in other shows also.
Just a note if you buy the DVD of this series. I have season one and at the end of "A Real Rain" they have _swapped_ _out_ the song "Hallelujah" for something else. I was quite disappointed!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if other songs were swapped as well; this was the one that had stuck in my head when I originally saw this episode on TV.
Be warned.
apparently google is the friend of all professional and amateur quote seekers.

does anyone know the qoute --something about ...if we knew men, we would neither hate or envy them (something like that)...and whose qoute it is????
ReplyDeletethanks
absolutely love the show! I tape every 1 old or new. I love the songs and quotes! Excellent choices! I have been downloading them since I started paying attention to the fact that there were songs as well as a show! Most I hadn't heard of prior-very soothing. Love the actors and roles they play! Just great! Wouldn't bother w/ TV otherwise.
