CRIMINAL MINDS: FANTASTIC RATINGS FOR "JJ"

‘Criminal Minds’ pulls in biggest national audience as A.J. Cook departs!

-“Criminal Minds” drew 14.4 million viewers, the biggest audience Wednesday, and led CBS to victory. “Minds” said farewell to A.J. Cook, who played J.J. But what will J.J.’s departure mean to the series in the long run?

There was some good news for NBC: The series premiere of “Law & Order: Los Angeles” drew 10.5 million viewers and won the hour. CBS’ “The Defenders,” a new drama with Jim Belushi, placed second with 10.4 million. ABC’s “Whole Truth” — which is in trouble — had just 4.7 million viewers.

CRIMINAL MINDS: NEW CAST ADDITION

Criminal Minds: In notable recent TV castings, Rachel Nichols has joined CBS' Criminal Minds as a recurring, Izabella Miko has boarded NBC's The Cape and Cartoon Network has assembled the cast of its live-action comedy pilot KROG.

Rachel Nichols (Star Trek) has been tapped for an arc on Criminal Minds later this season. Criminal Minds had been planning to add a new female regular cast member in the wake of the A.J. Cook's departure. I hear the character Alias alumna Nichols will play, FBI cadet Ashley Seager, was originally envisioned as a new regular but that has changed, and Nichols will now appear in 3 episodes. Seager is invited by Agent Hotch (Thomas Gibson) to consult on a case after learning her family history will bring a unique insight into the mind of a serial killer.

CRIMINAL MINDS: KIRSTEN VANGSNESS TALKS TO EONLINE

Criminal Minds: If Justin Bieber could be on CSI, he can surely do a guest spot on Criminal Minds, right?

And Criminal Minds star Kirsten Vangsness has just the part for him…

"Justin can be a terrifying killer—a guy killer," Vangsness tells me. "We always have these women who are getting killed, so I think we need more guys killed."

And then she laughs, "He can kill them and then cut their hair like his. That's how we'll know it's him."

Vangsness not only plays computer expert Penelope Garcia on the CBS drama (season six begins tonight), but she's the only castmember who will also be a regular on its upcoming spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.
Jesse Grant/WireImage.com

In other words, she is one busy woman. It's one of the reasons, as well as the passage of Prop 8, that she and fiancée Melanie Goldstein have postponed their wedding. They had originally planned on saying their vows in the spring of last year.

"We've come to the conclusion that we're going to do it in 2013—no matter what," Vangsness says.

Even if gay marriage isn't legal throughout the U.S. by then? Yup.

"Melanie wants us to go to every place that it's legal and just collect marriage certificates from places like Sweden and Mexico like people collect Disney pins," Vangsness says. "We want to put up a whole wall of them."

CRIMINAL MINDS TRENDED ON TWITTER!

Criminal Minds: Last night we were treated to the fantastic Criminal Minds season six premiere, "The Longest Night." Today we found out that Criminal Minds rocked hard in the ratings. Two wonderful Criminal Minds milestones to add to the show's collection but in between those two events something exciting happened on twitter. For the first time in the history of twitter and the show, Criminal Minds trended. If you don't know what that means let me just tell you that that is huge. It takes millions and millions of people tweeting the same thing to have something trend. So in the last 24 hours three things happened: The show delivered a perfect premiere episode, the fans trended the show on the largest social network site on the web and the Nielsen families showed us they have great taste in tv shows. The Criminal Minds actors, writers, crew, and fans have always been a family. Our Criminal Minds Family had a very good 24 hours.

CRIMINAL MINDS: SIMON MIRREN EXPLAINS "JJ"

Criminal Minds' executive producer Simon Mirren has explained how A. J. Cook will leave the series.

Cook, who plays JJ, was dropped from the show earlier this year but will return to tie up her storylines.

Mirren has now suggested that JJ will be moving on to another job.

"We've always intimated that JJ's character has connections outside of our world - other more powerful elements in the government," he told TV Guide. "Those powers that she's connected with come back into her life. So basically, what we're saying is, our loss is going to be somebody else's gain."

Criminal Minds Premiere: Can Morgan Keep His Promise?

Criminal Minds: Wonderful article used WITH permission by TVGuide.

-On the Criminal Minds Season 6 premiere, Agent Morgan will cross a very personal line in order to save a young girl's life.

Fall TV: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows

Morgan (Shemar Moore) not only has to catch a serial killer (guest star Tim Curry) during a Los Angeles blackout, but he's also driven by a promise to protect the daughter of Detective Spicer (guest star Eric Close), who was murdered in the Season 5 finale.

"We wanted to put a lot of weight on Morgan," executive producer Simon Mirren says. "He's personally invested because in the cliff-hanger, he witnessed this awful thing. He's never had to make a promise before. He's a single guy because of the life he leads and he doesn't want to put that kind of pressure on anybody or to have any demands on him. His teammates feel maybe he's crossing a line, but after what he's witnessed, the lines aren't blurry anymore."

Because of his promise, Morgan will lead the team's efforts to track down Curry's character, which proves to be no easy feat. "With a blackout, what do you do?" Mirren asks. "It's sheer chaos, and this serial killer is using that. The team members have to use their own initiative and figure out the best way to get the guy's attention. They end up relying on an emergency radio frequency to manipulate the situation and get ahead of this killer."

Exclusive: Criminal Minds nabs Hill Street Blues' Daniel J. Travanti

Regardless of what happens in the premiere, Morgan's vow will continue to play out over the first part of the season. "It's actually an arc that we're going to follow for a few episodes," he says. "We don't normally do arcs, but we felt that in the sixth season we could maybe go a little further into our main cast's lives."

That also means will be seeing more of Spicer's daughter, which allows Morgan and single father Hotch (Thomas Gibson) to bond. "There's a very wonderful story ... that involves the little girl from last year and my family and Agent Morgan's connection with the little girl," Gibson says. "All of those threads are brought together ... and intertwine in a really great way." Mirren adds: "Hotch is now a single father and Morgan is trying to be a father figure. So it's about how Hotch can offer Morgan, in an adapted way, advice about those things."

Gibson says he's looking forward to Hotch interacting more with his son, Jack, who remains Hotch's one bright spot after the murder of his ex-wife Haley. "Everything is as good as it can be under the circumstances with Jack," Gibson says. "It's a very difficult balancing act that Hotch has got himself in. ... Having his son is kind of what he's wrapping most of his optimism around. Hopefully we can find some other reasons to lighten up a bit."

Exclusive: Lost's Ben Linus headed to Criminal Minds?

Perhaps another woman? "I imagine he's not going to completely shut down the idea of finding somebody again, but it's hard," Gibson says. "We're trying to be respectful of what has happened. He's just drawing himself into the work so completely that he doesn't have the time to reflect or even to mourn."

All of the characters' personal lives will be explored more fully this season, as each team member will have a major secret revealed to his or her colleagues, Mirren says. "Some of them are very emotional, and some of them are very simple," he says. "They are things that they have held to themselves outside of the dark job that they share."

As expected, the secrets will present the team with some challenges. "When you find out something about someone you thought you knew, it can be, on the one hand, a really impressive thing that offers a whole different kind of perspective," Gibson says. "At the same time, it could possibly undermine the relationship and cause conflict or some sort of mistrust. ... I think audiences are going to find them interesting. They're going to be organic to the characters and things that will have made sense all along."

Criminal Minds returns Wednesday at 9/8c on CBS.

CRIMINAL MINDS: GUEST STAR ERNIE HUDSON

Criminal Minds:Ernie Hudson to Guest Star on 'Criminal Minds'

He ain't afraid of no ghosts, and now Ernie Hudson of 'Ghostbusters' fame ain't afraid of no criminals either.

AOL TV was on the L.A. set of 'Criminal Minds' today, where we learned exclusively that Hudson will appear in the sixth episode of Season 6 (premieres Wed., Sept. 22, 9PM ET on CBS). How? Because he was sitting right next to me, in full uniform, between scenes.

Hudson will play Lt. Garner, a tough fire department chief helping the BAU track a pyro-happy criminal in Detroit. From the scene we watched, it seems there are a ton of victims and everyone's a suspect.

"Half the city is set on fire, and he's got a dwindling fire force and fires everywhere. But we have this serial killer who's working under the guise of Devil's Night. Garner knows the Detroit police can't do it, so he calls in the FBI to give him a hand," Hudson explains. "He's been there for a long time ... he's just feeling less and less effective."

Fun fact: Hudson and star Joe Mantegna have been friends for about 30 years, ever since they shot a movie called 'Weeds' together. Mantegna is even godfather to Hudson's youngest son.

So any chance Hudson would come back for more? "I love the show and I've had a lot of fun this week ... I'm always open! It'd be great if [my character] comes back," Hudson says.

"I've done a lot of TV shows -- 'Lost,' 'Desperate Housewives' -- and it's very hard to find room in the middle of the cast. The good stuff usually goes to the cast," he admits. "But in this particular case, they created a guest star role [for me], so there's actually something to do."

Hudson joins previously announced 'Criminal Minds' guest stars Mare Winningham, Sterling Beaumon and Tim Curry, who'll be playing a serial killer in two more episodes this season.

CRIMINAL MINDS: MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER TO APPEAR IN 'ALL-STAR SUPERMAN'

Criminal Minds: All-Star Superman is an amazing read I thought. Now we get to see it come to life in animated form. According to THR, James Denton, Christina Hendricks and Anthony LaPaglia will add their voices to the project as Supes, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Also in the cast are Ed Asner as Perry White and Frances Conroy as Ma Kent along with Linda Cardellini, Arnold Vosloo and Matthew Gray Gubler. Bruce Timm will exec producing, and Sam Liu(Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) is directing.

For those of you that haven't heard of/read the comic..

All Star Superman is a twelve-issue comic book series featuring Superman that ran from November 2005 to October 2008. The series was written by Grant Morrison, drawn by Frank Quitely, digitally inked by Jamie Grant and published by DC Comics. DC claimed that this series would "strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements". The series was the second to be launched in 2005 under DC's All Star imprint, the first being All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. These series are attempts by DC to allow major comics creators a chance to tell stories showcasing these characters without being restricted by DC Universe continuity.

According to THR, the animated film..

...begins with the Man of Steel (Denton) oversaturated by radiation during a rescue mission near the sun, accelerating the degeneration of his cells. Knowing that he has a limited time before he dies, Superman sets out on a journey that sees him revealing his secret to Lois Lane (Hendricks), giving Lex Luthor (LaPaglia) an epiphany on humanity and ensuring the safety of Earth for when he is gone.

I just last night watched Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and enjoyed the Hell out of it. DC/WB really are the standard bearers for animated movies. I can't wait for this. The film is due to be released in the spring.

CRIMINAL MINDS: KIRSTEN VANGSNESS INTERVIEW

Criminal Minds: With a background in film and theatre, as well as being an acclaimed writer, there are many talented sides to the foxy, award winning actress Kirsten Vangsness – who is best known to us all as the quirky FBI Technical Analyst ‘Penelope Garcia’ in the CBS hit drama ‘Criminal Minds'. Kirsten’s character, Garcia, with her idiosyncratic dress sense, her razor sharp wit and her sense of comic timing, is most definitely a most welcome ray of light in what is otherwise a gripping but serious and dark show.
But it’s not just her portrayal of Garcia, or indeed the fact that she is part of what has become a worldwide phenomenon, that has made us wildly obsess about the fabulous Kirsten Vangsness – no, what excites us the most, is her thoroughly individual, wonderfully eclectic sense of style! Yes, her vivid outfits and brave accessories have become the topic of many a forum thread across the globe and we were extremely excited about catching up with her....

Q: Kirsten, being such an integral part of a hugely successful show like Criminal Minds, how have you personally coped with the global, cult-like following that the show has acquired?
A: I am honestly shocked to hear we have a global and cult like following, I guess that's how I cope, but being completely oblivious to how popular this show is, I am always sort of delightedly surprised when someone recognizes me because as far as I'm concerend, I'm just going to work and getting paid to act and that alone is fantastic, I forget people watch it too.

Q: CM is such a dark show and your character consistently brings that necessary bit of sunshine to its viewers, but do you find it hard to be involved in such gruesome, often heart-wrenching, storylines?
A: I get to act for a living, which is what I always dreamed of doing and it makes me IMENSELY happy and as sad and scary the stories we do are, at the end of the day it's done to entertain and I think it would be not authentic for me to have this great job where I'm paid really well and people are really kind to me and then go home and be all bent out of shape because of the job. As an actor, part of the job is to take on a character and thier circumstances and be able to let it go so that you can take on another character. Having said that, ...I have totally woken up in the middle of the night like from something that spooked me at work, I have even walked by a tv and seen Shemar (Morgan) and Paget (Prentis) running down an alley with their guns drawn or Matthew (Reid) tied to a chair and thought: "Oh no! My friends are in trouble!". I try to maintain little rituals to help come down from work....I think we all should have them for every job:)
